The restaurant's atmosphere lives up to it's name. Decent bar area on one side with tables in front. Dining room was clean and comfortable. The entrees on the menu sounded delicious, but we came for the tacos today. I went with one pork and one fish taco. The pork was definitely my favorite but both were good. These are what I would describe as small soft street tacos with enough meat to easily fill a larger tortilla. Sides like sour cream, guacamole, and shredded cheese are 50-cents for each portion cup. There's enough in each side cup to cover 2-3 tacos. Service was outstanding throughout our visit!

They were both delicious although a bit bigger and filling than expected. Next time we would definitely try them fresh and hot since they took about two hours to cook in the oven at the recommended heat. The service was friendly and helpful and they sell insulated bags if you, like us, had not yet started keeping a cooler in the trunk. All in all we would definitely come back!

We were able to play our own customized Spotify playlist on the back patio for a fun Yacht Rock Friday night feeling, and their IT/AV support, Randy, helped us play a personalized video of the couple on the patio TV throughout the evening. It made the night feel even more personal and special. The food was truly the chef's kiss, the beer by Brian Ford, co-owner and brewmaster, was incredible, and the service was outstanding. Trista and the wait staff were fun, attentive, and made our guests feel so well taken care of. One of the best parts of the evening was seeing our son and daughter-in-love so happy and surrounded by incredible family and friends who enjoyed honoring and celebrating them. The table next to us was also extremely perturbed because their food took 45+ minutes, for it not being busy. One of the guests asked why the hold up on food and the response was: "well it's Thursday after being closed for 3 days and we weren't as prepped as we thought; that's what happens in restaurants. You can take it to go." I also ordered their Macho Salad, which came without any dressing. Just lettuce and a few toppings. It's disappointing to spend a decent amount of money to have pretty poor experiences. Unfortunately, we won't be coming back.

My dad and I tried their Bibimbap (it's often spelled this way, but should be spelled as it's pronounced, "Bibimbop" with an O, that rhymes with pop). Well, let me tell you - I wasn't prepared for what was coming ! All of a sudden, two huge stone bowls filled with rice and toppings appeared. And the most impressive part was the loud, sizzling noise coming from it ! Warning: The stone bowls have been heated to a very high degree of heat. Do Not - I repeat - Do Not Touch the Stone Bowl ! Bibimbop (yes, I'm gonna spell it this way here) translates to mixed rice in english. And that's what you do, with all the ingredients, along with the Gochujang (sweet, savory, and slightly spicy pepper paste) that comes in a small glass bowl. The "jang" in Gochujang is also pronounced more like "jong". Anyhow, the Bibimbop served in the hot stone bowl, is called Dolsot Bibimbop. By using the stone bowl, it creates a crispy, crunchy layer of rice at the bottom. And koreans have a name for that too, haha... It's called Nurungji. I'm not sure, if you're suppose to mix Nurungji with the soft rice. Or, just eat it as is, at the end. For some reason, I didn't have nurungji in mine, my dad did. Was it because, I mixed mine up quickly, as soon as it arrived, haha... Y'all gotta come by and try it for yourself. It might be a bit more expensive, than the regular Bibimbop. But, in my opinion, well worth it ! They also have other korean dishes, along with favorite street foods like Kimbop (korean version of sushi rolls), and Tteokbokki (a very thick rice pasta, with a sweet and slightly spicy sauce). As for the interior, the restaurant goes back, at least to the 1950's. It has a quaint, diner like feel, with long bar stool seating in the back, and high wooden seating booth areas, along the sides. And if you prefer seating with more natural light, there's an area up front too, that's partitioned off. Beyond the bar stools, in the back, there's also an old, wooden phone booth. From what decade ? Perhaps from 1940's. Outside, beneath the Pelican's Roost Fish & Chips sign, you'll see written - Koffee Kup Restaurant. I've heard, that was the origin of this restaurant. Anyhow, according to my dad, they have good coffee here. So, come by and try out this place - either for fish & chips, korean food, coffee, etc... They're open from 11 - 8 daily, except Sundays. They're located on Lincoln Way. In my opinion, Pelican's Roost is actually located on High St. Lincoln Way is split in half by High St. So, it's a little tricky getting there. For parking, you can park on the main streets. But, there's designated parking spaces, in the back as well. ps Bob Hope and his family ate here in the 50's :)

We recently had the pleasure of dining at Monkey Cat for the first time, and it was an experience to remember. We sat outside in the beautiful garden with great music and vibes. The beef stroganoff special, featuring tender filet tips, was absolutely phenomenal - rich and hearty with just the right amount of creaminess. The coconut-flavored chicken vegetable stir fry was equally impressive, bursting with vibrant flavors of sweet and saavory with chili oil and fresh seasonal vegetables. The local beer selection was exceptional offering Crooked Lane and Knee Deep on tap. But the true star of the meal was the fresh-baked "bread service" appetizer accompanied by homemade honey cinnamon butter. It was warm, soft, and utterly addictive, elevating the entire dining experience. Our server, Erika "Urka", added a special touch to the evening. Having previously worked for Disney, she radiated happiness and enthusiasm, making us feel welcome and well taken care of. Her attentiveness and genuine joy were refreshing and made our visit even more enjoyable. Overall, Monkey Cat exceeded our expectations with its delicious food and exceptional service. It is a hidden gem in Auburn and we can't wait to return soon for their live music Thursdays in the garden. read more

If you are looking for a fine restaurant with great service.....look elsewhere. If you have any tastebuds at all......look elsewhere. What should have been a fancy dinner out became the worst experience ever. First we were greeted by a very unfriendly man dressed as a cook. He tried to seat us at the smallest table in the room. (the table was shorter than the booth seats) We placed our order and was disappointed with the appetizer. The calamari was cut into thick pieces breaded and overfried and served on a bed of spicy pureed tomatoes. Next, our entrees. I ordered the lamb with roasted potatoes and vegetables. The lamb was drenched in a mustard sauce, the potatoes had no flavor and tasted old and the vegetables tasted like they were just boiled and salted. My fiancee ordered the duck which came with the same vegetables, plain polenta and a heaping serving of blueberry compote. This restaurant should not be categorized as fine dining. The dishes were far from gourmet and the service was not of a fine restaurant. Save your money! read more

I am a frequent traveler up and down the I-80 corridor from San Francisco to Lake Tahoe. I stop in at the Monkey Cat every month, sometimes more, for lunch/dinner and have always had an excellent experience. It's nice to be greeted by the owner, and the service has continued to be excellent throughout every stop. From steaks, chops, salads and seafood, this place always performs as well as the best in the city. The new chef seems to have his finger on the pulse of some new and delicious variations on some traditional recipes. The Cuban pork stew is out of this world. Wine and drinks are always plentiful. I gave it a "five star" because having eaten in the finest restaurants in the world, Auburn is lucky to have such a close, intimate and reliable source for consistently great food and service. Owner Jim Bril has done a superb job with the Monkey Cat Restaurant. We took Rachel's mom there recently and had a great time. Crab cakes for an appetizer and a great seafood dish for dinner. Perfect. Service is excellent and atmosphere is great. I didn't see the Asian Duck Salad on the menu during the last visit (it was one of my favorite dishes) and they seem to have changed the Monkey Cat Burger around a little bit. The bun was a bit too dense for me. Otherwise, it's still a great restaurant and is quickly becoming a cornerstone of Downtown Auburn, much like Bootleggers has become for Old Town. read more

Monkey cat for the win. We have been to this downtown gem a hundred times or more. The atmosphere is always super cool. they have this light curtain the brakes up the room. My favorite it a restaurant that place nice music. Yes this place vibes. the menu is always fantastic. Van T took care of my wife and quick and smooth. I was very pleased with the food, the service and ambience. I made a reservation on line with something called open table ( I'm glad I made the reservation ) . When I got there, the place was pleasantly busy but I had a table waiting for my self and my family. We enjoyed some great drinks I had a monkey tai and my sister had an espresso martini yumm. The service was the biggest letdown. While ordering appetizers, one member of our party needed a little extra time to understand the menu before deciding. Rather than being patient, our waitress became noticeably curt, said, "I'll be back," and then didn't return until we flagged someone down. It took approximately 45 minutes for our appetizers to arrive. Throughout the evening, the service remained inattentive. I was asked if I wanted a refill on my wine, said yes, and it never arrived. Dirty dishes accumulated on our table, and I eventually stacked them at the end of the table in hopes someone would notice and clear them. They eventually did, but only after sitting there for quite some time. Unfortunately, the food did not make up for the service. The mushroom risotto was overly creamy, with a texture that reminded me more of Cream of Wheat than traditional risotto. The mushrooms themselves were bland, and the advertised liquor reduction sauce lacked the depth of flavor we expected. To me, it tasted as though it had been made from a mix rather than prepared fresh. The lasagna arrived with the top noticeably overcooked, and the gnocchi was equally disappointing. Instead of the light, fork-scored gnocchi we expected, it consisted of small, smooth puffs with very little texture. The promised lemon, olive oil, and parsley flavors were so subtle that the dish tasted flat and uninspired. Our table also shared several appetizers, but none of them stood out. Overall, the meal lacked the flavor, care, and attention to detail that we expected for a restaurant at this price point. What surprised us most was learning later in the evening that one of the servers was the owner's wife and our waitress was the owner's daughter. After members of our party quietly discussed our disappointment with the service, they approached our table and introduced themselves, with the daughter mentioning she had managed the restaurant for 13 years. Rather than reassuring us, it made the lack of attentive service even more surprising. For a dinner costing over $500 for six people, we expected excellent food and attentive hospitality. Unfortunately, neither lived up to our expectations. We left disappointed and, regrettably, won't be returning.

We didn't wait long, it arrived within 10 minutes. Also, after smelling their delicious coffee, I had to have a cup! A+!!!! My daughter let me try her Carnitas Omelet. Their Carnitas is on point! It was tender and has great flavor! Her omelet was beautifully cooked, being that it was gorgeous, yellow and fluffy. My Huevos Ranchero's was crispy in the bottom as I requested. I love the topping of avocado. The only thing I would change is to get all the salsa on the side. There was quite a bit on the Huevos Ranchero's themselves and it was a little overwhelming. Next time, I'll order it completely on the side. The menu has it listed as homemade... it tasted a little bit like it was Pace chunky salsa. I didn't even touch the side of salsa that also comes in the side and I wasn't sure what the extra side of tortillas was for, but I took those home. My daughter took home about half of her 3 egg omelet and some toast. Maddy was a great server. Everyone helped each other out by doing coffee refills for all tables (not just their own), running out hot food, and helping clean up tables as people finished their plates. Great team work! We paid up in the front and we're on our way. BE SURE TO TIP YOUR SERVER FOR ALL THEIR HARD WORK!

Tonight I placed an order at McGuire's for two BLT and avocados with mayo. It was a to go order…read more When I got the order to the individual's house, what we found was unacceptable. First thing you noticed is the bread was not toasted at all. It had a couple of brown stripes on one side only. When you open the sandwich, the lettuce was wilted, and the tomato was absolute mush, like it had been old and laying around for hours. The worst thing, though, were the avocados. 2/3 of the avocados were dark,gray or black. Obviously not a good avocado, but yet they managed to cut it up and serve it. And the last thing that was disappointing, was the fact that the bacon was in one wad in the center of the sandwich and not laid out on the sandwich. Just a wad that had to be disassembled and spread out. It looks and feels and sounds to me that that kitchen needs some discipline. Don't use old food! If the client asked for mayo, put it on the damn sandwich like they requested. Everything points to that cook being in one heck of a hurry as it was obvious everything was done down and dirty with little to no concern or care for presentation or freshness. I called this evening to let the manager know and I will call the general manager tomorrow. I believe they said his name was Joe? This is my second time at Maguire's as a local and I'm absolutely not impressed. There's a sign up when you walk in that says please wait to be seated. There are a couple of benches there so I sat down and waited yet I could not get the attention of anybody. It wasn't that busy. A few people walked in and managed to get seated. I talked to a couple of the waitresses asking if I could check on my to go order and was met with I'll get back to you. Eventually, I cornered one of the gals and there was my to go order sitting in a bag next to their Station. Something needs to be done about promptness also and managing and monitoring that entry station. I sure hope they can pick up their service and pick up their quality of food. Mike Vogt

She took the plate to "toss" them in the garlic but the garlic and oil was just poured on top in one spot. Gross. They didn't eat the fries where the garlic was "deposited." The waitress did check on us and did refill our drinks but the grimace on her face never went away. There are so few restaurants in Cool. It would be nice if they were good with great food but this one is not. Not friendly either. Friendly goes a long way. It helps soften the blow of mediocre food.
