Celebrated anniversary dinner here tonight. It was fabulous! Salmon was perfection. Service was great. Wine list was decent and it looked like there were lots of craft type cocktails available. We had reservations for 2 and were seated immediately upon entry- as it should be. I would authentically give The Monkey Cat 4.5 stars, knocking off .5 for kinda a boring/outdated ambiance. The food and service made up for it, however. After having lived in the area for decades, I don't know why it took me this long to give them a try. I'll be back, and probably very soon. read more

This restaurant is in old town Auburn, on a street beautifully lit with string lighting at night. Our service was great! Unique ice figures in our drinks. The appetizers and dinner choices were delicious. The desserts were 50/50 - the caramel cheesecake was fantastic, but the cream brûlée was watery and not good at all, which is why I could not give this dining visit a 5 star review. read more

I have been to this restaurant once or twice a year for a long time. but some accountant ( new owner) has made very bad changes to the menu. Now you have to buy any sides separately. Which really pushes up the price. The place is too expensive. They do have good service but that easy if you don't have any customers. They have a good location and it's a nice place. We had absolutely incredible service at dinner last night. Our server, Erica, made us feel special and appreciated all evening. She knew the menu inside and out and made spot-on recommendations on the food and drinks. It turned out it was a few people's birthday's including hers and my husband's. The food was great too, but our dinner will always be memorable in light of the coincidences and how amazing Erica was. I've been to Auburn many times in the past, but this restaurant is a stand out, the Grass fed burger was one of the best I've ever had, about as good as it gets. The staff was super friendly and very attentive ! From, the beginning to the end was a 9.5 in my book out of 10. Fly got stuck to the sugary rim of a beverage. They offered to replace it, however, it was so far into the meal that that didn't make sense. The response was that that's too bad. They left the cocktail at the table - with the fly stuck to it. Eventually, we moved it to the empty table next to us, another waitress came by and saw the fly and left the glass on the table. Would have appreciated a credit for that cocktail. Never refilled waters. We were there for 2 1/2 hours. Restaurant was not overly packed so we didn't feel we needed to leave to allow for new customers. Lobster risotto was made with shrimp, but the price was a lobster price. With the high prices ($40 for risotto), they actually charge for bread. Once they dropped the bill that was the last we saw the wait staff. For starters, the moment you walk in you're met with kind and caring wait staff who welcome you into their establishment. Once you've sat down, their menu is short and easy to read and our waitress came with a bevy of recommendations that intrigued all of our party dining. We were a party of 9 and the way they were able to bring our food out with minimal wait times, present the food in the correct order, and deliver a hot and delicious meal, was amazing. I personally ordered the scallop risotto and can speak very highly about their brie and honey toast appetizer. Both dishes were excellent. The evening concluded with the most interesting and convincing way to order dessert after a meal, they actually brought out a selection of 6 unique cake slices tempting all of us differently. I selected the chocolate mousse, and it was decadent and just a lovely sensation to finish my meal. The restaurant is themed well with local art for sale, a great background playlist, and a soft atmosphere that allows for larger groups but can be great for one on one dates as well. We were turned off when we discovered that the restaurant charged us an additional fee because we used a credit card. My husband and I decided to try Monkey Cat again after a not so great first dining experience. It was our anniversary and we heard it had improved on the Nextdoor app. The reservation phone system was not working so we drove over and were pleasantly surprised when they told us they could give us a table. I ordered swordfish, my husband ordered salmon. Both weren't just so so, the food was really bad. The swordfish was extremely over cooked, very tough and flavorless. The rice was undercooked and hard and the veggies soft like out of a can soft. My husbands salmon was fishy tasting and had an odd flavored sweet cold ginger sauce on it. I left my meal completely uneaten and made a complaint that fell on deaf ears. The table that was found for us was in a dark musty smelling back room with an empty unused bar and no music. We asked to sit at one of the empty tables in the main area (which was pretty and had music) but we were declined twice when we asked our server, saying they were reserved. So, we paid $100.00 for this really terrible ambiance and awful uneaten meal. Nobody ever did sit at any of the tables we requested. We live here in Auburn but will not return to Monkey Cat. read more

Cooked to her specifications, with a delicious loaded baked potato, she was full of compliments on the meal. I had the house cheeseburger which was equally divine after a tasty Buffalo wing appetizer. The staff was attentive and genuinely friendly and accommodated subtle preferences on the entree's preparation. We look forward to returning to sample more on the menu. Had dinner with out of town guests. It was a Tuesday night and we were surprised we were the only diners there. Service was wonderful. My wife's favorite tomato blue cheese soup was the best thing and it didn't come very hot but along with the warm bread was delicious. My wife ordered the scallops which she was happy with. I ordered the filet mignon which was the most unappealing looking steak I've ever had. Looked like it was cooked in a Microwave. For a $250 bill, I felt we got ripped off. We usually sit at the bar have an appetizer and a drink but last night we sat at a table. Erica was awesome as always. She recommended the pork belly bites. I wasn't too sure, but they,m were amazing. The red plums in that dish are to die for. I ordered the fillet, most people turn up their noses when Ordered medium well. Made reservations for some friends and I to partake of some yummy grub post tattoo appointment. Super crazy busy evening, but the food was delicious, the service was very good and it's definitely worth coming back again. I will mention to be prepared to be a tad early due to parking in old Town being a bit sparse, so preparation is key. The restaurant also has very high ceilings and a bar so it can get loud. And since people have forgotten the social niceties of going outside to have lots of loud face time calls for all to hear just be ready to speak up so your friends can hear. read more

We have been long time customers of Monkey Cat and last night my husband and I were enjoying a great dinner and then we received our bill. On the bill was a credit card surcharge. We paid with a debit card and know it is illegal to charge a surcharge for a debit card. Not only is it illegal to charge surcharge for a debit card it is illegal to charge a surcharge for a credit card in the sate of California. When I politely brought this to the attention of the waitress, she was not very happy and looked at us and said ok. I said ok, please remove it. She removed it, came back and slammed the new bill on the table. I offered to show her the law and she loudly said, I don't care, I don't want to know!! We have to be our own enforcers with this law, so be aware and be your own advocate. They don't care! 4 star food, 1 star customer service, so I give them a two star. We went there on Saturday, party of 5. Two had the steak and 1 had a hamburger........the worst we have ever had! Steak was dry and not seasoned, same with the burger! Wanting to eat at a nicer restaurant in Auburn, my boyfriend and I tried Monkey Cat. The dinner menu seemed kind of boring, so I wasn't expecting much, but the food turned out to be amazing! I ordered the stir fry bowl with chicken and my boyfriend ordered the short rib. Both of our meals were delicious. The short ribs were sooo tender, and the stir fry bowl was very flavorful and even a little spicy. The desserts were amazing too. We had the crème brûlée, which was flawlessly done, and the caramel cheesecake, which was heavenly. Nice atmosphere too. Will definitely be going back read more

My friends and ourselves were on a double date in downtown auburn and decided to stop and try this restaurant because the food seemed appetizing. The water guy was amazing as every few minutes he kept coming back and filling up our waters. The food was very good. The calamari was honestly the best cooked that we have had in a long time. Salads had fresh ingredients, the seafood to pasta ratio in the seafood pasta was very generous. Food came out about as fast as you would expect for a packed Saturday night. The look of the restaurant was cute and fun. This place was clearly very popular. The olive oil was light and fresh and the vinegar was not too pungent. The bread was sourdough and was fresh enough but not right out of the oven. I marked down 2 stars for three main reasons, the restrooms were always occupied and were clearly not adequate to the amount of guests. The second reason was the price we paid vs the relatively small portions we got with things like the crab cakes. Bonus reason, we arrived a few minutes before they opened and they easily could of let us sit but turned us away for the few minutes left before opening. The third reason, is that our waitress gave my friend the look of death when he asked her not to throw away salad even if it didn't come out right. They asked for their salad with dressing on the side and it came out with dressing in it, and being that they didn't want to waste food they asked if the salad was going to be tossed and if it was just to leave it. The waitress very quickly grabbed the salad and gave my friend the look of death and said "no! We are going to throw it away" it really just ruined the mood of the evening. It made us feel like we were trash just because we didn't want food in the trash. Keep in mind it was their kitchen that messed it up. It was clear that our waitress had too much to handle that night because she was giving stern talkings to the other staff from what we could tell. So atmosphere wise this place seemed kind of hostile and we aren't sure if we ever want to be out through that again even if the food is good and the location is cute. read more

Absolutely NOT worth the price. Ive been here twice now, thought I might have gone on an off night the first time but my same issues were present the second time around. I found the service to be really nice and attentive so thats not the issue, its really just the food. It lacks seasoning majorly, ive never in my life ever added salt at a restaurant but I had to last night. I got the bucatini with black pepper sauce which was extremely bland. While the pasta was cooked decently, the sauce tasted like nothing really. So basically it was boxed pasta with flavorless cream sauce for $22, absolutely not worth it. The first time I went here I got the scallop risotto which again tasted really like nothing, and the rice was regular short grain rice, not even risotto rice! The best thing about this place is the appetizers and the bread. Every appetizer ive gotten here has been fantastic, we got the baked brie (which had cinnamon and persimmon on top) last night and in the past we got the strawberry flatbread, both were 10/10. I'm not sure what happens with the entrees but the appetizers are the only reason this place gets 3 stars for me. read more
