This could be my perfect drink actually I love this speakeasy I love the vibe I love the ambiance I love that they have couches. I love the music they play. I also like that they have dim lighting believe it or not. They are a little bit fussy about whether you use flash photography from your phone and I don't mind that at all. Felt rushed when told to get out of the walking / water way for the bar, when the lights were turned on forty minutes prior to as advertised apple maps' hours, followed by Closing Time & the music being cut, and an 8 min warning of 'its time to be cleared out and have used the restroom and have finished your drinks' and then again in 4 min, after altogether having spent over $80. The bartender did let me exchange my perceived overly sweet last note with the aviator and probably did want to get home, but seemed like an aggressive tactic to otherwise supportive patrons. read more

We saw the novelty of the mirror at the front door of this bar and we wanted to check it out. To get here you walk down the stairs to arrive at the entrance. Once you walk in you won't be able to see much because it's very dimly lit. There are some longer tables at the front, bar seating in the middle, and some lounge seating and couches in the back. All of their drinks are $16 and mostly consist of the classic cocktails. I ordered the old fashioned which was fine but I was hoping for more creativity in their drinks especially given the price of them. Their website brands themselves as a speakeasy but walking in it didn't really give off that vibe. When I think of a speakeasy I imagine a relaxed intimate environment with lower-volumed peaceful music, and this place didn't have that. The music was mostly rap and hip hop and it was loud as well. We could hear the music blasting even from outside when we were taking pictures of the mirror and it only got louder once we walked in. When we sat down at a table we basically had to yell to talk to each other and it was still hard to hear over the loud music with our ears pounding. It felt less like a speakeasy and more like a club. We weren't feeling the vibe of this place and we left soon after. read more

I do love a good hidden door speakeasy. This has a good hidden door. The vibe is good, and clearly was supporting a few first dates (good choice, gentlemen). The bartenders are pretty quick thanks to the limited menu and bottle selection. The cocktails are more hit or miss. They are almost purely classic recipes, but the balance can be off. My scofflaw was far too much lemon and obscured the whiskey. My sazerac was better, but honestly just OK. Literally the only reason I stayed for a second drink was to give them the chance in case I ordered poorly on the first. I like the concept, but I'm not coming back. read more

I was excited to check out The Mirror with a friend this week. The last time I went to a DC speakeasy bar was a million years ago, 18th Street Lounge back when it was still in DuPont Circle, so I was excited to see what the current scene is like. It's a cozy space, and as one would expect with a bar that styles itself as a speakeasy, somewhat hidden - but not SO hidden that it makes any sense that it took my friend 10 minutes of walking around the vicinity before he found it (shouldn't a GenXer get this sort of thing better than a millennial, even an elder millennial like me?) Anyway, when you get inside expect to be immediately carded in a very dimly lit entryway by the friendly bouncer (not used to seeing a bouncer smiling so much, it must have been obvious it was my first time there haha!) Even at 5:30 it was already pretty busy, so my friend and I got seats at the bar, but if you get in early enough you can snag one of the comfy-looking couches towards the back. We both got the Aviation, and we both really liked it. It's one of the sweeter gin cocktails I've had, but it still worked nicely and it was a pretty drink too. The bartender was courteous but not pushy or pretentious. My one real complaint would be the music, which was mostly hip hop/R&B, and while not too loud, its not really my vibe anymore. I could see it working for a younger crowd but age-wise the clientele ran the gamut on a Thursday evening. I'd check The Mirror out again if I'm in the area with a friend, but probably not something I'd go out of my way for. I have more speakeasy searching to do! read more

The only reason I didn't give it 5 starts is because I really wish they served just the simplest bit of food there. It's only a bar atmosphere with snacks available. Also the lightening inside is very dark and dim which I can appreciate this is why my pictures are so dark tho, you can't flush a light inside either. Which all makes sense. This place is fantastic! If your new to D.C. or just have never been you need to add this love to your bucket list. It's nestled in to the point you honestly can't tell it's there. Not to be confused with Mirror lounge on U Street! To give you an idea, this place is located near Park on 14th! I knew this place as Lima back in the day (yes I'm old old). It's a lot smaller than I expected but don't let that deter you. It's still a nice place! Ladies, the steps to get in are steep. Leave the stilettos at home if coming here!! It's a great spot for a date, as you can talk and not worry about who's around you - there's also lots of seating options to sit and chill. That said, be careful about the weekend nights, because this place can get packed, and if so service doesn't get you as fast as you would like. If there is a classic cocktail that you want, chances are that they can make it, and don't worry that they don't have your favorite brand - it will be good. Great hidden cocktail bar! Highly recommend this place if you're looking for a quality cocktail. The bartenders here are great and able to make amazing cocktails that are not just on the menu. The space itself gives off speakeasy vibes (as expected) with low lights, leather couches, fancy chandeliers. The one thing we weren't a fan of was the music. More club like than quiet cocktail. You should definitely get here early because by 6pm, every seat was taken and a lot of people are standing making it difficult to get to the bar or at times feel like you're being crowded by people standing right next to where you are sitting. Typically I think of a speakeasy as a place that fits only the seats available, not full occupancy. So be prepared for it to get busy. read more

Had an awesome time at the Mirror! In terms of speakeasies its definitely one you have to know about to know it's there. Its located in what looks like an abandoned building under a creepy set of stairs behind a mirror, finding it is a fun experience. We sat at the bar and quickly decided what we wanted. We didnt even have to order! The bartender, Brady, was listening in and already had the drinks we wanted made for us. Brady was so fun and such a great bartender, we had a lot of fun chatting with him throughout the night. Overall really enjoyed the drinks, they have some classic cocktails and a few original ones. I had the Nacional and the Jack Rose. I ended up trading the Jack Rose for my friends cocktail who had a really delicious bourbon drink with grapefruit and honey. I'm not even a huge bourbon drinker but really loved that drink. Both drinks were super boozy. We were treated to house made lemoncello shots which were DELICIOUS. I really loved it here and will definitely come back. The service is great, the ambience is great, they play awesome music, its not too loud and at least on a weeknight its not too crowded. They do $3 off cocktails during happy hour which goes until 7:30 which is unheard of these days. Overall a great place! read more

It's very dimly lit, and it's prohibited to use camera flashlights, which makes it hard to read the menu. The place is pretty small, but we were able to get a space on a couch. This is one of those IFYKYK spots that really makes me happy DC has local dives that aren't touristy or stuffy. When it comes to the menu, this is your centered cocktail experience spot with very little seating so I would imagine it gets packed the later the night gets. I didn't see any food on the menu and I want to say I enjoyed my elderflower concoction but it was a bit too sweet for my taste and the cup they served it in swerved it left and right without little friction which makes me wonder how they serve this drink later in the night. The concept of this place is cool and while compared to other speakeasies I love in say NYC, it does not hold a candle - it's nice to see more spaces like this pepper DC. It has the charm of getting to a speakeasy - unassuming place and a nice pop of delight once you discover the entrance. Getting in was a bit chaotic for absolutely no reason but the bouncer was self-aware enough to personally seek me out to apologize on the way out (he really did not have to). While I don't think this place has the bones of what makes a truly great speakeasy - inventive drinks and experienced mixologists, I do think it's a fun vibe and space. I was roaming the empty streets of DC on Thanksgiving evening and The Mirror was among the very few bars open, so I figured I'd give them a try. Located on 14th and K St NW (remember Lima nightclub), you won't see a sign for it outside. Once you get to 1413, just go down the stairs and pull the mirror open at which point a bouncer will ask for your ID and tell you that no flash is allowed. Since it was Thanksgiving Day evening, I was the only one at the bar, but they're working with quite a small space. From talking to the bartender, it seems that they usually get busy and even have people waiting outside. Don't get fooled by the lines: it's nothing special, it's just a very small space. Can't say much for the decor, except that they have very dimmed lights, a couch and a few mirrors here and there. The time I was there, they played hip hop which was nice. The bartender was nice and knowledgeable about liquor which is always great. Their drinks are mainly gin and rye based, so I ordered the Brown Derby - it combined bourbon, grapefruit and honey. The drink was alright. Strong enough, but I didn't necessarily love the overall taste. I didn't have a bad time, but I also wouldn't rush to go back. read more
