Chicken Tikka Masala was invented at a restaurant called Shish Mahal in Glasgow, Scotland (of all…read moreplaces!) by a Mister Ali, and the original dish here was unlike any other version I've tried. Chopped pieces of red chicken tikka were enveloped in a creamy tomato sauce and mixed with chopped peppers, creating a tantalizingly sweet, savory, tangy, spicy, milky curry. In addition to the famous CTM, I also tried the Palak Paneer, a flavorful but greasy pureed spinach curry with cubes of paneer; and the Shish Tandoori Mixed Platter, a sizzling iron plate of onions, tandoori chicken, chicken tikka, lamb tikka, lamb seekh kebab, and a prawn, each of which was marinated with yogurt and spices before being cooked in a tandoori oven. The entree came with sides of saffron rice, nan bread, a mild house curry sauce, and a salad of pickled red cabbage, red onions, cucumber, and tomato. Overall, the food here was tasty but definitely had an anglicized flavor profile. The service was friendly though a bit awkward, and the prices were expensive for the quality of food.

Since the nearby New Pearl of India was done up to resemble a lottery winners living room, the Shezam has struggled somewhat to hold on to its loyal band of regulars. But to be fair to it, it has survived against all odds. And I have heard that on a Thursday night you can get a buffet for a pound if buying another full price one! It doesn't really matter if it's good or not, it's a pound! I'll be back for sure.

As you can imagine, a business that has been around so long has a legion of regulars, and has definitely earned each and every one. Nomi is the kind of business owner who is all about his customers. He loves a bit of banter, and is always keen to make sure you've enjoyed your meal, and to find out if and how service can be improved. The food itself is always fresh and tasty, and can be made more or less spicy at your request (excellent for those who aren't satisfied until they have a volcano in their mouths, as well as the shy of spice). The selection is to die for, and the Shezan is also one of the few places where you can actually order gajrela for dessert - so yummy. And just so you know, you can have speciality Indian teas instead of the bog-standard tea for the end of your meal. Tis definitely the best Indian restaurant to be found in the Mount Florida / Battlefield area. Get on down there and partake!

I am always a bit wary when I walk into a restaurant during prime dinner hours (7pm) and find the…read morerestaurant completely void of patrons. No matter though... My co-worker and I braved an evening walk through the dark streets of Jonestown, Scotland to find this specific restaurant for its highly touted curries. Seriously though... How could I pass up curry? So, I ordered the Madras Lamb Curry with a sweet raisin naan bread. You would think that being the only guests in the restaurant the food would arrive quickly. In fact, it was just the opposite. I suppose they had to go catch the lamb out back for our meal. Regardless, after about an hour of waiting and several glasses of India's finest Viper beer, the food finally arrived. The curry was supposedly on the spicier side, but seemed more on the mild side to me. Perhaps a 4 on the 1 - 10 scale, 10 being extremely spicy. The curry was in a thick tomato based paste with lamb chunks hidden within the gravy. It wasn't all that great to me. What saved the meal was the naan bread. I don't know what it is about warm fresh flat bread that makes everything taste better, but I certainly made quick work of the bread and had it devoured in minutes. The decor of the restaurant was a strange choice of pastel pink with a splash of Indian-like artifacts strewn randomly about the wall. Shimla house definitely would not be the best Indian restaurant I've ever dined at, but has certainly earned its place as the most peculiar Indian restaurant I had the pleasure of visiting.
