Very vegetarian friendly! A return visit to Shish Mahal was well overdue so I booked a table and headed over for an early dinner. It was already pretty packed at 6.30pm midweek so booking is a good idea. I pulled the Shish Mahal listing up on my Yelp app and hit the phone number. Easy peasy - thank you Yelp! Had to have me some of those amazing onion pakora/bhajis again though this time we shared two portions between three and it was plenty! When it comes to the vegetarian section of their menu my cup really did runneth over. There were so many great looking options that I couldn't decide and let someone else choose for me. I had the vegetable chasni with rice and a part share in a very big naan which was cooked to perfection. The meat eater had a chicken dish and enjoyed having a whole breast chicken rather than chopped pieces. The waiters here are lovely and we enjoyed a little banter at the end of our meal. Top marks for the Shish. Again!

We had a wee spur of the moment visit to this place last night. Usually our eating out is planned in advance, so it was really good just to pick somewhere and go along with no real advance expectations of how it was going to be. When we arrived, the initial staff we met were not overly friendly as we had not booked in advance and they struggled to fit us in. It is very much an old style curry house in terms of decor, so caught in a time warp. It has been there for decades, but the style has always stayed the same I would imagine. Once they squeezed us into their last available table we waited ages for our menus as we watched others get served before us. First impressions were not great tbh . The menu was huge and dated in style and it took us a while to pick. Then the food arrived, this is when everything changed. The quality of food is amazing. Perhaps the best I have had in Glasgow in this genre. Mixed pakora to share to start was extremely fresh and tasty. We got one piece each of veggie, chicken, fish, potato and mushroom. Hard to pick a favourite they were also so good. Probs top three were chicken, fish, mushroom. If you love pakora, this place is definitely worth trying. For mains I had a lamb tikka kebab, with rice, salad, sauce and a cheese & onion nan on the side. The portions are huge!! The cheese and onion nan was one of the best I can remember having. Hunners of cheese and the best, fluffiest bread you can imagine. The kebab itself was also huge, cooked to perfection and really tasty. The service let it down a bit at the start, but as the night went on it got much better. There was friendlier staff and it was super quick and efficient. Beers on offer also let it down a wee bit with limited options. I had a pint of cobra which was fine, but boring IMO. Still pretty standard for this type of place I guess. The food is without doubt five stars, but for me as as an overall experience it's 4 stars.

It's clear that the focus of the restaurant is that it should still be a fun pub atmosphere that just happens to serve Indian food. So, looking in from the outside, you wouldn't know that it was an Indian restaurant. But when you walk in and smell it, you'll know. Portions were a little small so expect that you'd need to get a few things to get a full meal out of it. But they are appropriately priced for the portion size. They serve food here tapas-style and I believe you are still meant to share them so the idea is that you get a lot of dishes and eat as you drink copious amounts of beer. The one thing that made this place stand out was their service. It was amazing! During my meal, their card machines broke down and, as a result, I didn't have a way to pay for my food. The manager then comes up to me and says, "It's our fault. Don't worry about it." To be clear, this is only something I'd see in small-town America but never in a major city. So I was surprised that in Scotland's largest city, they were so trusting. (Really earning their reputation as the friendliest city in the UK). I was so touched that I promised I'd return to pay for my meal. I even kept my receipt so they'd know what to charge me. I came back the next morning, paid my bill, and, even though it's not required at all in the UK, I left a big tip as a thank you for trusting me and being so accommodating. When I come back to Glasgow, I will definitely come back.

The supplements (samosas, naan, rices) were flavorful and fresh - we all enjoyed the variety of cocktails and mocktails, too, and would recommend on a future visit to Glasgow.

A local colleague of mine suggested Balbir's, and since I was familiar with the area I went with another coworker. The long and short of it - AMAZING. To start with, I'm a novice when it comes to Indian cuisine, so any help or advice is truly appreciated. Upon arriving, we let our server know we had diet requirements (vegetarian and gluten intolerant), and lo and behold the service we received was exactly what people expect from a dining establishment but rarely receive: lots of help, great advice, personalized service, and a genuinely great meal. Our server not only walked us through all the plates offered, he also explained their origin, how spicy/hot it was, how to best pair with other food, and how to eat it. Everyone that did stop by our table was kind and asked how our evening was going. I truly believe this was the best meal I've ever had in the UK period and the best service I've ever received. And just incase you were wondering: no, this was not a 4-5 $$$ dining establishment. It is well appointed, clean, and smells wonderful! Definitely recommended!

Rather than the "cram as many in as you can" mantra of most Glaswegian Indian establishments, this place is vast but densely populated with tables. The result is probably the most traditional curry hall in the city, combined with contemporary and modern decor, particularly following a reason rennovation. Thankfully this is not simply an all style and no substance kind of place and as much care has been taken with the menu as with the aesthetics. While it's always a risk proclaiming a Glaswegian curry house the best in the city, Balbir's is without question in the upper tier along with the likes of Mother India's Cafe, Shish Mahal and Dhabba. The banquet, in which staff tailor make a meal for your party depending on your dietary requirements and taste preferences, has gained a reputation as being the choice of the city's true curry connoisseurs, with friendly, affable staff rarely getting it wrong with their recommendations. However what perhaps makes Balbir's stand out more than anything is the fact all dishes are cooked only with cholesterol-free rapeseed oil and minus artificial food colourings. The result is probably the healthiest tasting curry in the city and one which leaves you feeling guilty free the following morning. Well, relatively speaking.
