Chicken Tikka Masala was invented at a restaurant called Shish Mahal in Glasgow, Scotland (of all…read moreplaces!) by a Mister Ali, and the original dish here was unlike any other version I've tried. Chopped pieces of red chicken tikka were enveloped in a creamy tomato sauce and mixed with chopped peppers, creating a tantalizingly sweet, savory, tangy, spicy, milky curry. In addition to the famous CTM, I also tried the Palak Paneer, a flavorful but greasy pureed spinach curry with cubes of paneer; and the Shish Tandoori Mixed Platter, a sizzling iron plate of onions, tandoori chicken, chicken tikka, lamb tikka, lamb seekh kebab, and a prawn, each of which was marinated with yogurt and spices before being cooked in a tandoori oven. The entree came with sides of saffron rice, nan bread, a mild house curry sauce, and a salad of pickled red cabbage, red onions, cucumber, and tomato. Overall, the food here was tasty but definitely had an anglicized flavor profile. The service was friendly though a bit awkward, and the prices were expensive for the quality of food.

The taste of Indian food here is better than expected, my boyfriend loves this place because he thinks its his own little secret find. I guess this is the reason many who love The wee Curry Shop do, they all think it as a little personal place for them, that they have found, and they can go to have good food. I agree, I like that when I feel like a curry I have the perfect place to go.

Why then, have I left it until now to visit The Wee Curry Shop? It's always been there. I like curry. What have I been doing? Clearly I am a bit of a fool. I can only comment on the food I got to take out, which I did because I was dining alone and because I needed to get back to the office. If that doesn't sound like a fun day it's because it wasn't one but this was definitely the highlight. I ordered spinach chicken and basmati rice. I waited in the lovely little restaurant while it was bring prepared. It's a really nice space, although I did feel a bit under-dressed to be there. I'd love to get dressed up and come back for a date night or something. At some point the restaurant manager realised the chef was cooking my chicken bone-in and came over to ask if that would be ok. He was very attentive - I assured him it would be fine. I'd noticed that this was a Mother India restaurant and well... that name is good enough that I'd trust their chefs with almost anything. The food was delicious. I had a huge hunk of perfectly tender chicken in a fragrant sauce packed with really fresh spinach. Is it weird that I was really enthusiastic about the rice? I normally don't care that much about rice - it's kind of just their to soak up the curry sauce - but this time it was amazing. There's a discount if you order food to take away so this was also surprisingly inexpensive. My partner is jealous that I went here without him so I think we'll be back soon. I definitely recommend it if you're in this part of the West End and in the mood for a curry.

Well it got to dinner time and curry seemed like a good idea so off we set. There is a wide selection on the menu but I really fancied paneer so that was an obvious starter choice. Then I opted for the chicken jaipuiri with a nan. Oh and a mint lassi which was delicious! Quick service and by the end we were stuffed. Only slight gripe was the difficulty we had in getting the bill at the end but other than that everything was tasty and enjoyable. It was busy when we were in but the food was quick to the table. Just as well as I was starving! I'll add this to the list of good curry venues in Glasgow, and I'll definitely have to get off the bus again to come back!

They do a number of speciality dishes but I opted for the chicken tikka hallumi, very nice and reasonably priced, the good thing is they also have a desk for takeaway food if your just looking to get a carry out. A note though is that they don't serve alcohol in here so don't do what I did and go expecting to have a pint with your dinner - this is the only reason I'll give it 4 stars as it won't cater to everyone, but in terms of the food I can't fault it.

Secondly, it is extremely overstaffed. Whilst we ate there was a host, 3-4 wait staff knocking about and someone else who brought the food to your table. This did become a bit odd. There were too many staff on so they congregated around the bar, which was next to where we were eating, and as there were so few customers you started to feel a bit conspicuous. The staff were insanely efficient, as they had so little to do! However aside from there being more staff than customers at times Ashoka is exactly how you expect. Great food with polite and efficient service. Would I walk to this one over Ashton Lane? If they have another deal on you bet your Pakora I would!

I was quite enthusiastic about trying this restaurant, as I've heard many a remark complimenting the fantastic food and superb service. The deal entitled us to a Chef's Platter to start, a main each with rice and naan bread to share - there were options to upgrade to the Tandoori Platter, or upgrade the rice and naan for extra pennies, but that really wasn't necessary. There was a lot of food! When we turned up for our reservation, we were kindly shown to our seats quickly and our drinks orders were taken. While we waited for the food, we were given a wee taster of something made of potato I think, which was really nice. I just wish I could remember what it was called! The Chef's Platter contained, among other things, chicken chaat, chicken pakora, veg pakora, mushroom pakora, onion bhaji, and the most enormous samosa you've ever seen! Our mains hadn't come out yet and already we were filling up! Tasty, tasty! For our mains, we'd both chosen the chicken bhuna (instead of being clever and choosing two different dishes and sharing - hindsight is 20:20), which was super duper tasty! There was plenty of rice and a large, lovely, warm, buttery naan to go with it, so I dread to think what state of stuffed we'd have been in had we upgraded. It was all very yum. Worth every penny. Drop on by, oh spice-loving lovelies.

We had poppadom's with spiced onions. the poppadom's had an after taste as if they where made some time ago and the spiced onions had a texture as if they where part boiled & very soft, when onions taste like this you know they are on the turn and they where. Food wise, the grub was good, if not 'waaaaahaaaayyyy'! Price wise, it was a tad on the steep side, coming in at just over 50 notes for three folks. Maybe it's just me, but that seemed a tad on the high side. Overall, it's a three, but a solid three none the less. Will I be back? Not sure really. It's clear that the focus of the restaurant is that it should still be a fun pub atmosphere that just happens to serve Indian food. So, looking in from the outside, you wouldn't know that it was an Indian restaurant. But when you walk in and smell it, you'll know. Portions were a little small so expect that you'd need to get a few things to get a full meal out of it. But they are appropriately priced for the portion size. They serve food here tapas-style and I believe you are still meant to share them so the idea is that you get a lot of dishes and eat as you drink copious amounts of beer. The one thing that made this place stand out was their service. It was amazing! During my meal, their card machines broke down and, as a result, I didn't have a way to pay for my food. The manager then comes up to me and says, "It's our fault. Don't worry about it." To be clear, this is only something I'd see in small-town America but never in a major city. So I was surprised that in Scotland's largest city, they were so trusting. (Really earning their reputation as the friendliest city in the UK). I was so touched that I promised I'd return to pay for my meal. I even kept my receipt so they'd know what to charge me. I came back the next morning, paid my bill, and, even though it's not required at all in the UK, I left a big tip as a thank you for trusting me and being so accommodating. When I come back to Glasgow, I will definitely come back.
