They must have changed the menu. When they brought the plate, I could not see the chicken. Once I did, it might have been 4 ounces and had, overcooked. I I went home hungry. It used to be great, now, I'll never go again. I live 10 minutes away. Too bad. Stay away. Also very slow service. Not many people which was unusual. Nothing was the same. read more

I found myself here for about 10 minutes on Saturday, it was thronged and the music was blasting as apparently to have a late license in this town means you have to endure loud music and dark rooms. There were some alcoves were couples sat. And various styles of music in each room, one of which was salsa and these amazing salsa dancers kept standing on my toes. They would not allow me walk by and didn't apologise, oh the joys of drunken obliviousness and numbness of the nervous system. Upstairs looked nice but it was sectioned off, has that Professor Henry Higgins style library room to it. Definitely somewhere to go with a group and maybe be a bit tipsy prior. read more

I was in town yesterday for a bit of shopping with the mother. We deicided to go for something to eat and have a drink. The Ireland match was on and everywhere was jam packed. We ended up here (unfortunately). First of all it was very cramped, I couldn't get into my seat because there was someone at the table behind me. Some tables were moved to facilitate a group of four which meant we couldn't actually get out without people have to move. We both ordered the Guinness steak pie with mash and when it can out the first thing I noticed was how unappealing it looked. Then when we tasted it it was FREEZING COLD. We had no choice but to hand it back. When it came back out it was hot but we were slightly turned off. Honestly it was just ok. In my opinion the food is substandard, overpriced for what you get and the staff seem over worked and not happy to be there. I had attempted to go here awhile back with my husband when we were in town for the day but got refused by the bouncers for some ridiculous reason, we were both stone cold sober. Last night was no exception, the music was just load enough to make conversion almost impossible. So pints are fairly standard price for that part of the city, about the €5.50. I have been here a few times with friends for drinks. As a bar to drink at, it is simply okay. Not the best but also not the worst. Recently my girlfriend received a gift voucher for a dinner here. Having never considered this a place for food we gave it a try. The dining experience didn't start out well when they mixed up our reservation thinking it was for the previous night. But since they had a table we were seated. They had a 8oz fillet listed for 26.50 on the nightly special menu and I decided to give it a try. I ordered it medium and I actually think that is what I received, but it was so bland and ugly it was hard to tell. The menu said it came with pepper sauce, which it didn't. When the waitress came by I asked for it, and she said it doesn't normally come with pepper sauce. okay, but it was on the menu so if you are a waiter or waitress you should be aware of what is on the menu at the restaurant you are working at. Unfortunately the pepper sauce didn't help it taste better. In fact it barely tasted like pepper sauce at all, instead it was like the cook took a bunch of the grease from the grill and mixed that with some peeper sauce flavoring into a little cup for me. To finish the night off, they messed up our desserts (which were the only good thing we ate BTW), messed up our bill, and throughout the meal my seat was continually bumped into and pushed by the staff because they have the tables so cramped together it is impossible to walk between them without needing to push them out of the way. read more

I have to give it 4 stars although I didn't think I would. For some reason I've been passionately avoiding this place on Friday and Saturday nights but when my friend organised his birthday drinks in here, complete with a reserved area, finger food, party hats and bubbly for everyone I had no choice. And oh, have I been converted. I loved the music, not what I expected at all. Think The Cure and Fleetwood Mac as opposed to Beyoncé and whatshisname. There was a hostess who looked after us the whole night. She regularly checked in with us and made sure everyone was happy and there was no stranger danger as in: non-party guests crowding our space and eating our food. I take off 1 point for the bar service. We had special drink promos on that night and everyone had a wristband but they tried to sell us more expensive options the whole time. Not cool but overall a surprisingly great venue. read more

I really like this bar because of all it has to offer! We came here on a bar crawl and the space itself is really nice, three separate bars separated by doorways. The first bar seemed a bit more lowkey, I believe this is where dinner is held. The second bar had a live band and televisions. The third bar was very cozy with intimate seating areas and board and card games to play including Cards Against Humanity! The drinks were reasonably priced and the crowd in here was great as well. There wasn't any music for dancing but I can imagine that when they do have it, this bar would make for a great night out! read more

Went here for supper as a option number 1000, everything else was packed. The place was okay. I have heard that it is better for drinks than food. The service isn't that great at all they are very slow and seemed like they didn't want to answer questions about the menu. They food menu is classic pub food cooked averagely, nothing spectacular about it and quite bland in my opinion. If you come here, do it as a last resort like we did or for drinks after having eaten somewhere else. read more

I think I'm going to go with my first instinct and call the Mercantile soulless. It's an average, albeit pretty big, pub on Dame Street and on Fridays and Saturday nights it's usually pretty crowded, which is one of the reasons I don't really like it. The pints are pretty expensive here- not unusually expensive in Dublin to be honest though- and the barstaff have the tendency to ignore one end of the bar for some time. All in all a pretty average place to go to for a few drinks, and having said that if you come here at a quieter time and actually get a seat it's not as bad. read more

From this Californian's standpoint, The Mercantile is one of the most unique property's on the planet... A former bank building in the popular Temple Bar area of Dublin. The place is massive with several bars, dining area, music locations and even a hotel. The staff is real and accommodating and the food is even very good! When we checked into the hotel, I was anything but impressed, in fact had planned to leave in the morning and find another hotel, this was due in large part to the fact that the rooms are a bit dated. But after watching Martha run the front desk like an inspired conductor and being catered to by an amazing staff of accommodating and intuitive bartenders and servers, we decided to give it a go and honestly, it was such a fantastic experience the entire week we were there! The older room quickly became charming and the beds were actually very comfy! Live music, great bars, excellent food, fabulous location... This is Dublin! read more

Last weekend I rounded up my friends and we were to meet in The Market Bar. Myself and my girlfriend arrived and had a drink while waiting for the rest. One of my friends arrived and joined us and we had a good aul' natter waiting for everyone else to turn up. We started getting impatient after a while because no one other than the three of us had turned up. Next thing I know I get a phonecall, "Ronan! Where in the name of all things awesome are you? We're all here!" Confused, I said that I was there and didn't see them. Where were they? The Mercantile! So we went there. I have to say, I never start a night off in the Mercantile. I don't really have a reason for it other than, I'll usually start off a night in nice familiar surroundings only to wind up somewhere else entirely! That said, the Mercantile is a very nice place indeed! For starters, it's split up into several sections. You've got the mini-bar as I call it where they usually have a band of some sort playing a few tunes. The regular bar, where you'll find people just chilling out over a few pints. The posh bar, where those who think they're posh hang out and a basement... I don't know what happens in the basement... Every time I've been there I've always been impressed with the bar staff. Even when it's busy they are smiling and quick to look after anyone who has decided that sobriety isn't a good look for them. The drinks are poured well and served with a smile, what more could you ask for! As atmospheres go, even when this place is completely packed, you can still move freely. It's a casual spot where everyone seems to talk with everyone. Although, some of the nutballs you come across can really make your night go by quite strangely. My last visit involved having a man who was mostly made of beard, drank white wine and ranted about how butchers don't make sausages like they used to... Anyway, this place gets 5 stars for the following reasons: 1. It's a great spot to meet up with your friends 2. The staff are friendly and the service is quick 3. I visited here 3 years ago today and it was my first night in Dublin. I was looking for a good place to get something to eat and drink and got lost and found this place and I'm glad I did. I had my first Guinness here and loved it. When I went back to America I switched over from Coors light to drinking Guinness beer. I never really liked dark beer before. Mercantile tavern, on the large thoroughfare called Dame Street, is a well known pub, for the locals and the visitors. It has become the meet point for many people from South America and Spain because in one of the many spaces of this pub you can find salsa music and lot of people dancing it weekends. The pub food that they serve is good with a "drinking purpose", good portions of fried food to accompany the drinks in those hours of the evening when the stomach roars and the diet purpose fails after few pints. read more

Great place to go to watch the football, especially Arsenal where the Dublin supporters club is located! Plenty of tv's to watch from so no bad view in the place. Drinks are quite expensive, €5.80 for a pint of Bulmers is crazy even for the city centre. The bar food is quite nice with a nice selection and they have plenty of staff around. Place is absolutely massive inside! Always have a spot free to sit either upstairs or downstairs. Toilets are clean for whenever nature calls. read more

Get's pretty crowded on gameday or any weekend night - but with two sections to the bar, plus a seperate area for bands to play - it can fit a good amount of people. Good, chill bar- nice venue to hang out and have some drinks. On Saturdays, the Latin club can get good! They play everything from cumbia and salsa to reggaetón and the crowd is usually pretty hyped up and dancing. The DJ in the middle bar is cool, nice mix of alt, indie pop, 80's and 90's rock. I like the middle bar on those occasions when it's a group of us and we want to chat, chill and drink. You can *usually* score a booth. And, on a good night, the middle bar becomes a dance venue, too. Overall, it's a good, unpretentious, not too crowded venue to have a good time in. read more

This is a pretty cool place. It's not the greatest for traffic flow but there's a not way too many people, even on a Saturday night so that's nice. It's not empty, don't get that idea, it's just the right amount. There's a few different areas and some play different music, which is nice if you've got some friends that want to dance to salsa type stuff while the rest want to just hang out and listen to other music. Every 2nd saturday of the month, Mercantile host a free concert organised by Music Maker...which was the purpose of my first visit there. Sweet lord of devine...I felt like I was in the Celtic tiger again ! Packed through the roof with loud music and loud people on every single corner of every large room of this massive pub...and only 1 exit heheh (I laugh now but on saturday I wasn't) anyway, turned out it was nice and relax on the one room booked for the gig...As most of the other reviews mentioned, prices of pints are quite high and there's really nothing special about this place IMO. read more

The Mercantile is a grand spot right near the city centre. There is always a good crowd here and most nights they have some good entertainment. One of the definate bonuses of The Mercantile is it's size. Like Messrs they have a few different areas once you are inside and you can get a bit of room even when it's quite busy. It's a blessing and a curse sometimes as on many a night when I go to meet the lads we have all been here and not known until someone is after ringing and we find we have just been in different parts for the past hour sure! read more

My wife and I stayed for drinks and watched a World Cup Match. I only had drinks, but I can say the barman was a real pro - efficient, personal and fun. It there was a lot of street noise that made it hard to her the game, but I can't hold that against the venue. read more

Having been here before for food and thought it was ok I was utterly disapointed this time. My friend had the chicken sallad, the sallad looked like it had picked itself and then died and the chicken was dry. I had a burger where the vegetables didn't taste of anything (tomato, sallad and red onion) and bun felt stale. The actual burger could have done with some seasoning and the fries with some flavour. I was here the other night at the 'Project X' after party. There was a great atmosphere and feeling when you came in to the bar. The bar itself is attractive with nice high celings and a few different levels. The staff were all really friendly and i never had to wait long to get a drink...which for me is a real plus! Went to the Mercantile for Sunday pub food with 16 family. One of my aunties is very picky eater. The service was ten out of ten Julian was so helpful & friendly we all loved him!! Had the pub food, mains & deserts was very tasty with great choice & affordable. I cannot fault this pub, my Auntie cleaned her plate!! Would highly recommend for pub food with friendly staff!!! The Mercantile. Its not that there is anything wrong with it, there just isn't much good about it. I'd call it a typical Irish pub interior, standard beers on tap, and zero atmosphere. I'd agree with both the comments say its 'souless' and the fact that if you are at the far end of the bar, good luck getting served quickly. Then at about 10pm the music gets so loud that you can't hear the person next to you. Not sure who is in charge of that, but really I shouldn't lose my voice trying to talk to a friend or ordering a drink. In the past few weeks a good friend of mine and I have discussed how we don't understand how we end up there every few weeks, more than we'd care to....cut to Saturday night at 2am and that eternal debate of 'should we go home or go somewhere else?'. We decided to go somewhere else and The Mercantile was suggested, to which my friend replied with an emphatic, "NO! Why do we go there?". When asked what was wrong with it, she merely said, "I don't even know. I just know I don't want to go back". I couldn't have agreed with her more...there's nothing glaringly wrong, but there's just not reason to go back. read more

Came in to a very nice Irish pub for some lunch, looked great to start with...until 2 hours went by and we still hadn't received our lunch. Tourist groups were coming in and all of a sudden all the "staff" went for a wonder and never returned to the main bar. As a bar manager myself, would not return or would completely avoid lunch times!! read more
