Second day in Dublin, lots of touring, and after a tour of St. Patrick's Catheral we headed to the Temple Bar area and wanted to take it in. We made our way into Oliver St. John Gogarty's. It was packed, it was noisy. We finally got seats at the bar and ordered a couple of brews. There were a lot of people having a great time. About half way through our brews the recorded music was replaced by a two-piece band. One guy on a guitar another on a fiddle. They were fun. On our way back to our hotel we heard this traditional Irish music coming from inside this packed bar. We entered and the woman was playing a violin and the guy was playing an acoustic guitar and singing. We sang along with the crowd for a while and everyone looked happy and content with the environment. The front had a big wooden rum barrel and two chairs. A beautiful black horse pulling a carriage was stationary in front of the bar. This bar emitted the feeling of true Ireland and was fun place to unwind and listen to music. read more

Fantastic entertainment with guitar a violin! But, thought I would go for the Irish experience and order the traditional stew and deeply regretted it. This place is very fun! I see the average rating isn't great and I'm not really sure why, especially if this is the vibe you're going for. Our dinner was accompanied by live music that had us and many others singing and clapping along seemingly endlessly. On top of the good tunes, we all absolutely LOVED the food. I was feeling a bit adventurous and went with the pie of the day and it was delicious. Enjoyed the sides with it as well. I want to give a special thank you to our server, Rhys. As the restaurant was busier, Rhys was very professional and made sure we got what we needed and gave helpful recommendations. As the restaurant cleared out later on and slowed down, Rhys was very kind to talk with us about travel and provide more recommendations for future trip ideas, given their personal experiences. Food: I hear the complaints of pricing and tourist trappiness- I do. But hear me out when I say our food was NEXT LEVEL PHENOMENAL. Even better than many other locales that came with higher culinary praise. Were we just drunk or tired, or both? IDK. But that food was HEAVENLY. Be careful when paying at the bar. In March I ordered our drinks and tried to pay with cc. The barman said it hadn't gone through, so because they were very busy, I just paid cash. Fortunately I always keep receipts, when the cc statement arrived, I saw that it had in fact gone through, so paying twice meant I paid 68.3 euros for 2 pints Guinness and a small red wine! My friends and I had such a blast at Oliver St. John Gogarty that we went two nights in a row. The pub was located on a corner and stuck out like a sore light green thumb. It was a beacon of celebration. You can't miss it. Bartenders were consistently friendly and quick with the drinks. I was introduced to Tequila Rose shots at this pub and am not turning back now. Out of all the places we went to around the Temple Bar district, I felt like the people there were the friendliest. We made lots of friends albeit tourists like us, but maybe the pub being smaller and more intimate helped bring people closer together. The live music was awesome. As cliche as this sounds, but I heard them play the Cranberries each time I was there and it made my days. First night was Zombie and second night was Dreams. read more

Great bands, great food, great beer. There are two different rooms/bars. I did the more chill one where you could also eat in peace. But it still had a band. Very entertaining. Great service as well. Bartender was very nice, and since it was my first bar here, let me try different ones (beer) that were from Ireland which helped me figure out which one to buy and which one I liked. Great customer service and was a great conversation as well. Ordered the fish and chips of course and was very good. If you're looking for a fun Irish pub with live music, come enjoy it here. It's located close to the Temple Bar area where it's touristy, but being able to avoid Temple Bar itself. We came by here for a drink and snack, but really wished we came for food as well. We saw other tables with food which all looked delicious from the stews to bangers to fish and chips. Instead, we had a few rounds of drinks and snacked on a Cheeseboard (€14.95). The cheeseboard was decent and included breads, crackers, cheese, olives, grapes, celery, and jam. Like I said, better off ordering real food dishes here. What I enjoyed most of the live music and fun atmosphere here. It's lively, yet not too wild --at least not in the late afternoon. Fun place for a filling and hearty meal in the temple bar area! The live music on the first floor is very fun and lively. There's plenty of space on the second and third floors for dining in. They have several specials everyday, the pie I had was a chicken pie which was steaming hot and had large chunks of chicken. Super filling! The side of mashed potatoes was just ok but I liked dipping it into the pie. Seafood chowder was also extremely hearty, full of chucks of salmon and mussels and other bits. If you're looking for a lively, divey pub in the Temple Bar area, Oliver St John Gogarty hits the mark. It's a loud, relatively high energy place with friendly service, good drinks (though, beware Smithwicks fans, I heard the bar tender have to explain to seven different people five times a piece that they don't stock Smithwicks), and prices that, while a little high compared to many places, are pretty reasonable by the standards of the neighborhood. The 8oz burger was the perfect combination of delicious and aesthetically terrifying, as one imagines they'd have to unhinge their jaws like a python in order to get that first bite (see photo). The Temple Bar district is an historic pub area in Dublin. Oliver St. John Gogarty is a pub with afternoon live music, in this district. When we visited, the pub was loaded with tourists and we waited about ten minutes for a table. Most of the waitresses and bartender were from countries other than Ireland, so there was a bit of a language barrier. This was compounded by the fact that the service was incredibly slow. Our group of four ordered food and water (we knew we were headed to the Porterhouse later for satisfying microbrews). I got the bowl of mussels. They were small mussels and the sauce was watery. They used just the faintest trace of butter and wine and a LOT of water. About 5% of the mussels were closed, and I didn't eat those because it means the mussel was dead before cooking and therefore unsafe to eat. The food was pricey here too. The only redeeming qualities for this pub were the live band and the inner décor. We watched an amazing duo, Stephen O'Connor (on the pipes) and Dave Dunne (vocals/guitar), play traditional Irish music. See my attached photo. I highly recommend for someone to walk around the bar and look at the paintings and artwork on the walls. There were some quality artworks adorning the inside. I would recommend a pint of Guinness here and avoid the food. You could view the artwork and watch the live band and have a marvelous time. read more

Stopped here on my last night in Dublin after looking for a place that had the typical Irish pub ambiance. The food was great, I had the steamed mussels and a ribeye steak. If you're only going to be in Dublin for a few days and are looking for the, "traditional Irish experience", make this your place. Gogarty's had it all. A multilevel venue of pure fun offering live traditional Irish music, Step Dancing, and all the usual suspects one would find on a Irish comfort food menu. The fish n' chips in particular, served with a garlic aioli, was outstanding! Service was slowly efficient yet pleasant. I stopped in here on a Monday night so the place was only about half full. None the less, the Crack was on! There were two dancers from Riverdance performing who blew the roof of the place. They were really quite something to see actually and engaged the audience in some crowd participation. Such fun! Yes, OSJG is touristy, perhaps even cliché, but if you know what you're walking into here, you could quite possibly have the time of you're life. Got our holidays destroyed by the restaurant! We went on a group of 7 people to have some oysters on Saturday for lunch, and after 24 hrs all of us start to be very sick, terrible cramps, fever e the list go on..... we couldn't move from bed and we lost 2 days of our holidays in bed with pain. After understand that ALL of the 7 people got sick, I come back to the restaurant to inform about the problem, and for my surprise they were completed negligent and state that it couldn't be their fault, which means, they didn't care about check the oyster's stock to avoid that other customers got the same problem. I understand that eats oysters involves a high risk, however, if 7 people, out of 7, get sick, I believe is a case to be concerned about. This is only a review of the pub. I didn't stay in the accommodations area or eat in the formal restaurant upstairs on the third floor. Not too bad for a touristy pub in the middle of Temple Bar. There was a large food selection on their bar menu, from traditional Irish food like Stew, Beef and Guinness casserole, and Fish N Chips to burgers and pasta. There is something for everyone on the menu, including vegetarians. The pints were pricey but seems about right for a popular spot. The same thing happens in the Gaslamp District in downtown San Diego, CA. The two times we went there, the same guy was performing and he chatted us up a lot during the performance which was great. There were people there from Dublin, the States, Finland, France, and Germany and he had songs for all of us. One of the nights we went there was a Monday and they were slammed. There was only one bartender and one lady working the floor, so sadly service was super slow. We ended up not getting our last drinks because after thirty minutes we didn't get our drinks. She apologized and I don't hold that against her, but the management needs to realize they get busy and staff accordingly. read more

First things first - yes many tourists visit this iconic bar and restaurant in the popular Temple Bar quarter of Dublin named after a legendary bon vivant character in Irish history. Still I can only give Oliver St. John Gogarty five stars because I enjoyed a totally awesome meal here with outstanding service. Let's get to the details: Downstairs is a lively pub with Irish music playing throughout the day. Upstairs is a charming and wonderful Irish restaurant. In fact they have one of the best value meals in Europe in my opinion in their 22 Euro prix fixe menu. I started with Irish mussels in a white wine, herb, & cream sauce that were truly superb. When I reached the bottom of the generous pail of mussels, the broth was like a totally tasty clam stew. A dish of warm lemon water will cleanse your fingers as you move on to the next course. The Irish soda and brown breads with creamy Irish butter provided a nice interlude to the delicious Irish lamb stew. This is Irish lamb stew as it should be prepared - warm and hearty with top-notch ingredients. One didn't need the assorted vegetable platter which accompanied it but I recommend sampling all of them because they are also well prepared. Service was informative, efficient, and friendly. And afterwards you can head downstairs for a pint and some Irish tunes. Seriously, I could find nothing not to like about Oliver St. John's Gogarty.
