Firstly, shout out to our server Victoria. Very friendly and accommodating. I think for a party of 7 the round booth was a tight fit and with only 2 burners we had to settle for less options. I would recommend 3 burners for a party of 6 or more. The bread choices were only one. (Pretzel bits) In the past we used to get a variety of breads like pumpernickel, Italian and pretzel, but we seemed to only get one among 7 guests. The rest was as expected aside from having to wait on extra sauces which came at the end of our entree in a broken dish. Overall we had another pleasant meal. Excellent service and hospitality with an intimate, secluded setting in the heart of Reston. In terms of time and location, this place feels like an entire different universe compared to modern Reston. The prices are a bit steep; even during Happy Hour and with application of coupons & discounts. With that said, I found the two melted cheeses I had to be undercooked and lukewarm; lacking flavor; and just overall bland, yet oddly heavy. The dipping accoutrements I had for the cheese fondue, additionally, varied from very basic (the bread) to pretty terrible (cauliflower in particular). It was a nice gesture to receive free chocolate covered strawberries for the occasion in which I visited; which were well-made but nothing noteworthy in terms of distinctiveness, ingredients and flavor profile, or execution. Whether you have not ever been to a fondue restaurant or simply have not been to one in quite some time, this place may be worth it as a one-off. It is very difficult to recommend repeat visits, however. The tall glass windows provide for a nice ambiance, especially if seated near them. My recommendations to the restaurant would be to modernize the menu a bit with bold or fusion flavor profiles; control quality, namely the meltedness of the cheeses and freshness of the dipping accoutrements; and to look into live music, namely jazz or piano. Lastly, with how pricey the offerings are, I would advise either a revision of price points; or offering an all-you-can-eat option. While many restauranteurs cringe at the latter, especially those who seek to scrutinize every penny, how many people can legitimately eat "their money's worth"; let alone greater than the operating margin of the house? The difficulty in repeat visits is compounded by the proliferation of all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ; Brazilian rodizio; Chinese hot pot; and so on... and all of those options include meat -and- other dishes. read more

My whole life I've always wanted to try Melting Pot, so for my annual birthday dinner this year I switched out my usual snow crab legs spot for this one. Dessert-wise, this place is 10/10. The yin yang chocolate swirl and different dipping options were really good. Food-wise, my family and I really didn't like it and couldn't even eat the leftovers. We did the full course meal, the cheese sauce and broth were decent but the meats/main course was practically inedible. It was just gross unseasoned meat and we were super disappointed. I also ordered an espresso martini and it came half empty with zero foam or beans on it. I asked if they could reshake it and their excuse was that the foam had settled quick before they brought it to me.. but there was none to begin with which was weird. When they remade it and brought it to me(it was good the second time) the foam lasted for almost an hour as I drank it. Although I was super disappointed with the entree portion of my birthday dinner, the dessert was amazing and I would definitely come back here for more chocolate fondue and drinks!! read more

Melting pot: the Americanized version of hot pot with less food and more expensive. First, they sat us in the back room, which would have been fine but I think because we were not in the main room, our server didn't see when we were done or needed water refills; therefore leaving us thirsty and frustrated with the time lag in between courses. Second, with how large the tables are 3 pots was very difficult for our 8 people to split, especially if your party has dietary restrictions. My friend and I split the dinner for two. The cheese was good. We both got the caprese salad and were disappointed there were actually greens (arugula) underneath. The arugula was not the best. The land and sea, while delicious, the proportions were scant and there are no offerings of extra dippers. The chocolate of course was great. All in all, go to an authentic hot pot it will not have a cheese or chocolate course, but the unlimited food varying options will leave you satisfied. read more

Went to The Melting Pot for a friend's birthday. I haven't been to this chain in years, but the product is still good and the service was very attentive, even for a fairly large party. The cheese fondue offers three types of melted cheese with bread, chips and veggies as basically an appetizer. Then we moved on to broth based fondue and a grill for meats and more vegetables and lastly chocolate fondue with an array of cakes, brownies, rice crispy treats, and fruit for dessert. I also tried a Virginia based wine, which ended up being one of the best wines I have tried in Virginia and am now planning to visit their vineyard; so thanks for that lucky opportunity. :-) several of the other members in our party ordered cocktails and I heard a few mention they were very sweet; so I'm glad I stuck with wine. Overall, the experience was on par with what you would expect from a national brand name restaurant. I'd say the staff made the experience better. If you like fondue, this is a good option and probably one of your only options unless you count hot pot restaurants as being similar enough. They do offer personal fondue pot service at their booth tables, which I would prefer over the large party setup we had. We went here for Mother's Day after years of not having been. I reserved a time via OpenTable and received a call several days before to confirm my time from the reservation team at this location. Once we arrived, we had a very short wait (about 5-8 minutes) as they prepared the table. The table was clean and tidy. We were quickly greeted by our server and given options for dinner with our two kids and chose to go with Bigger night out for two. Overall, the food was good but I would say it's not enough to fill you up given the effort that goes into cooking it. This is definitely an experience over anything else. Towards the end the service did get slower but not too out of the ordinary. The best part was the desert. Many people I have talked to said to just go here for desert but I wasn't sure if you could do that. The 4 stars is mainly for value. read more

So - the family (5 of us) went here for dinner. We have not been to the melting pot in many years. Obviously it's an event more than a meal. Initial observations was that the place was dirtier than I remember. This of course happens to restaurants as they age. The hostess tried to jam us in a booth built for four and three of us are not small fries. So we needed to be reseated. The menu is a bit confusing regarding what comes with what? The waitress was not a big help on that, although she did review the menu quickly with us. Thank goodness we got a bigger table as we needed two burners for the fondues. T to he food is what it is. You cook it so you can only blame yourself. I was really taken aback by the cleanliness and atmosphere the restaurant had. Time to refurbish and freshen their look. read more

The Melting Pot is such a fun experience! We love the assortment of dippers, and different fondues to choose from! We decided to try the new "Ultimate 5-Course Experience". We started our meal off with the Green Goddess Bacon Tomato which was dainty and delicious! My favorite part was the entrée, the meats and veggies were so fresh and flavorful. Our waitress was great! She explained each course and went over what was what as she presented it. The only downside with our experience was the VERY loud and obnoxious table of teenagers having an event or party. They were screaming through the duration of our meal. I also think the restaurant could use some TLC, the bathroom and the hostess stand surrounding area appeared rather dirty. read more

I came here to celebrate with a friend and my sister and our waiter Leo was very attentive. He asked about why we came and added a nice note on our dessert plate. I haven't been to a melting pot in years so it was kind of new to me. It was a nice place to just chat and catch up especially considering we ended up there for three hours. As I'm writing this review realizing that we stayed about an hour past the place closed (at least based on Yelp/Google hours). We got the spinach and artichoke cheese fondue which was good but they switched to our entree pot pretty quickly. It did take a while for the food to come out but everything tasted pretty good. I wondered why it took a while for things to come out when they're not cooked or anything but they might've been short staffed or something. The service definitely made up for it and we were in no rush to finish. The chocolate fondue was the best part of it. I was excited to hear about their Wednesday night special where you can order a cheese fondue, a salad and a dessert fondue for a discounted price. I never really cared for their main entree fondue. Come to find out they now offer grilled proteins in addition to their normal broth fondue. They also have a great kids menu option. As the weather starts to get a little chilled, a bowl full of hot melty cheese sounds just about right.  The Melting Pot, for years, has been the place to go to satisfy that craving.  The dining area is spacious as are the tables.    Despite the heating element and pot in the middle, there is still plenty of room for all the dishes and glasses that you may need.  Rather than do the full meal, we opted for a la carte, which allowed us to skip the meat course.  Cheese, salad and dessert is more than enough.  We chose the classic alpine and our wonderful server did a great job mixing and melting our cheese fondue right at the table.  In this way, you can also customize how much you may want in the way of spices, for example.  There are a lot of bread cubes and veggies to dip in.  And, if you run out, they will bring more.  We are big eaters so we found that having a serving for 3 was a good amount for 2 people.  We enjoyed both the classic salad and the Ceasar.  The honey mustard dressing may have been a little on the sweet side.  This can also be said for the mocktails which were tasty but also a little sweet.  The salads arrived a little later than optimal which is probably why we tore through all the cheese so fast.  For dessert, we had the classic chocolate which is actually a mix of chocolate and peanut butter.  I might go for a straight chocolate next time.  There are again, plenty of dippers, including brownies, rice krispy treats, pound cake, waffles, marshmallows as well as strawberries and bananas.  They will bring over a second helping of any three of these.   We really appreciated how helpful and friendly our server was as he really set such a nice tone for the meal.  There is plenty of parking available in the parking garage around the corner. read more

This chocolate fondue was a great dessert. The presentation was cool since they lit the chocolate on fire. The only problem was that I felt this was over priced for what they had offered. I wish there was an option for which dipping items you could get because I would opt more on the fruits than cakes since the chocolate was already sweet. It's cute. Now look, you're dealing with someone who refers to this place as American hot pot. And rest assured, every hot pot place is going to be more appealing to me than this place. And that's not because I don't like fondue. I rather love fondue - having grown up frequently eating it at lunch halfway down the Swiss alp, because that's what was served. Though in my case that was 100% cheese. None of this meat and broth stuff. Maybe I was sheltered. If you are mentally mocking me for casually (but only inferentially) dropping skiing in Switzerland as a kid in the same sentence where I suggested I might be sheltered, then you are on solid ground. I applaud you. Anyway, it's a fun experience. It's a good place to go for birthday parties, anniversaries, special occasions and so on. And honestly, for what you get, it's not a bad deal. We had a party of EIGHT. Let me tell you, eight sets of dietary preferences ringing a table of 2 fondue pots is a tricky situation. And yet, it seemed to work out okay, despite the prevalence of teenagers present (with parents, because you know teenagers behave very differently when their parents are around). We started with the cheese, of course - one classic alpine and one alpine hot honey. Let me allay your fears, the hot honey version was not not. It was definitely more honey though. Tasty on both counts. I feel terrible saying this, but ... I honestly like the fondue I get at the local grocery store better. Literally feeling bad right now having typed that in here. But it makes it no less true. This was followed up with an assortment of mains that spans their meat-lovers piz ... wait no sorry ... ah, *checks notes* STEAK lovers entree, pacific rim, and several custom arrangements. One thing that's really cool is that each person gets to pick their own thing. The cooking style though ... that was narrowed down by the number of pots. It worked out ... we did the vegetable broth in one pot and the coq of vin in the other. I rather prefered the coq au vin especially with the Brown Sugar Bourbon Rub Steak. Oof. That's the stuff right there. I was hoping to try the cast iron grill but alas, only 2 cooking styles for the table. Reviews from the field (my teenagers) yield that they found the meats over-seasoned. The garlic pepper steak had a bit too much pepper, for instance. But look, they're teenagers, they'll complain about anything given the chance. Where ever do they get that from? Back to the topic at hand - dessert. We ordered one original chocolate pot and one white chocolate because I don't like chocolate. You see - if I had led with that you'd have known you couldn't trust this review. Anyway, seemed to go over okay with the table. General consensus was "wow this is just too sweet" and then everyone kept eating. So that was our meal. The service was outstanding throughout - our server in particular was friendly, attentive, and seemed to both really enjoy his artistry in preparing the pots (the cheese fondue in particular) and knowledgable as he'd worked there a while. I don't want you to jump to conclusions that this place isn't worth going to just because it's got three stars. It's okay. But I'd go again. I'd go for the unique experience ... err, again. Omg we had the best experience at The Melting Pot in Reston! We came in for the Octoberfest beer cheese fondue as we saw it on Fox 5 and had to have it. Our server, Tyler, was great and said he was new so we went easy on him. We learned that you can only get that menu if you order a 3 or 4 course meal. My daughters a vegetarian so that wasn't going to work. In swoops the Assistant General Manager - Leah Muise, and she assured us we can get that without the meat as a cheese fondue option. I'm a bit of a traditionalist and tend to go with the classic alpine made with gruyère, raclette, and fontina mixed with white wine, garlic and a dash of lemon juice and grated nutmeg. If you're reading this and wondering if you should go here, listen to me and choose another restaurant. If we could give this place zero stars, we would. My friend & I ordered the $90 meal-for-two and expected a meal that would blow us away. It indeed blew us away when we discovered VEINED SHRIMP (you know, poop inside intestines still attached) on our plate! I understand that this is a Make Your Own Meal place but now we have to DEVEIN OUR SHRIMP TOO?!?! But this isn't where the fiasco ends. The manager Emily & our waiter Jose tried to convince us that it wasn't a big deal and it was "normal for restaurants to serve food like this" & "it isn't a big deal." EXCUSE ME?! Serving me disgusting food & then undermining the atrocity we're paying $90 for!?! We both work in the food industry and we do NOT mean to be Karens but are you f-ing kidding me? Then they tried to offer us their cheap desserts in place of the $20-something meal. If we didn't keep complaining they would have charged us $90!!!! Thankfully, we were only charged for our cheese fondue & salads, but eating the leftover meat didn't matter to us because we had already lost our appetite from this disgusting place and left immediately. Came here to try the 4 course dinner, which was an exceptional experience. The restaurant interior is very nice with private booths accompanied by low lights, creating a romantic aura. You're first greeted with a choice of cheese fondue. We chose the Gruyère cheese which was fantastic with the fruits that were provided with it. Next we got a choice of 2 salads and one of which we chose was a Caesar salad. This salad had a twist compared to the typical Caesar with sweetened nuts on top which I absolutely loved. Then you get the main entree and a choice of cooking style. We chose the oil cooking style so all our meats would be fried. There was a variety of meats including seafood, beef, and chicken. You are also given some pasta and vegetables. There is also a selection of sauces ranging from yogurt curry to teriyaki and a dipping for before you fry. My personal favorite of the meat was the teriyaki beef. I wasn't a fan of the dipping sauce with the shrimp tempura flakes and a couple of the meats on this tray tasted average like the salmon and shrimp. Lastly you are delighted with some chocolate fondue of choice of which we chose flaming turtle. This also came with an assortment of pastries and fruit. The service here was great, our waiter was very informative about the options we have for the course and stopped by often to see if we needed anything. I would say that this course does take a while to get through, specifically when you are cooking the main entree. So do be prepared to be cooking and keeping track of cooking times yourself. This definitely isn't the option for you if you're looking for a quick or easy dinner as we spent a total of 3 hours here. Haven't been to a melting pot in years but I'm so glad I finally went to one! This is a TON of food and you will get super full. My only complaint was the slow service. The spinach artichoke fondue was great and less heavy than some of the other cheese fondues. However it did congeal kinda quickly. The house salad was small and tbh sometimes you just need a good iceberg salad and the ranch was really good. I liked the added egg. Did the create your own with coq au vin - great sauce for meats btw! The chicken takes forever to cook but it's so tender. The steak (teriyaki sirloin) was so good. I def overcooked a couple of pieces but it was delicious! My fave was by far the mushroom pouch pastas. They annoyingly always fell off my spear but they were so delicious, flavorful and tasty. I ended up just snacking on the fruit and bread salad - always get the caesar salad for the candied pine nuts. yumm. entree - mojo with steak, teriyaki steak, chicken and shrimp - get the mojo! I drank some of it before we started dipping & oh god. better than the other bases I've tasted. comes with broccoli, mushrooms and potatos (that were salted lightly & crisped). dessert - got the yin and yang with milk and dark chocolate - opted for an upgraded dessert (sweet additions) plate of caramel cheesecake, macarons & cream puffs. the cream puffs were so worth it - dipped in chocolate omgosh! yes. the cream was cold & the chocolate was nice & warm....mhmmmm....I'd go back just for that. by the end of it, we were still kind of hungry since the entree isn't much. but the chocolate kind of filled that hole for me. our waitress was pretty attentive in the beginning, but I think they placed us in a weird spot. we were her only table in this one spot in the corner & everyone else around us had the same waitress. we're sure she eventually got busy on her other side and kind of forgot about us, but it happens when your waitress is on the other side of the restaurant. but if anything, go for the chocolate. don't expect much - keep expectations low & I think you'll have a great time! read more

Yesterday was the first time my girlfriend and I went to the Melting pot in Reston. I would give it a solid 4.0/5. Parking wise, I noticed people were complaining about the parking garage but there is free parking right across the street within a 1-2 minute walk to restaurant so I would definitely opt for that again for those looking to try this place. First time trying the place so I found the menu a bit clunky. I think the concept of the four course meal was great, cheese fondue+salad+entree+dessert encompasses everything you want on a night out. I personally found that the position of the four course meal was just a bit out of place considering it was right on top of the entree's. My initial impression was that I would be cooking everything in a hot cheesy goodness but I found out quickly that was not the case. There was a cheese fondue section but then one for entree's that we're cooked in broth. I personally would of loved to have more cheese that I could coat my meat entree's into but perhaps that's just personal preference. Service was nice, I got a new waiter and we had a miscommunication but the manager sorted it all out. Overall the experience was great and my girlfriend had a great time. Side rant: I was telling my girlfriend that I just find it comical that the trend nowadays is to cook everything yourselves versus have experienced chefs cook the food for you. I mean I thought the whole reason for going out to eat was to not have to do that. Service was great- Alexander was amazing. The decor was from the 90's and the entire restaurant needs an update.
