I regularly come in and get offal, because I'm on a budget, but I'd rather eat beef heart from the Meat Hook than eat CAFO steaks. The customer service is usually pretty damn good, and sometimes superlative. The owners are super friendly. Today Sam, one of the butchers, really went over the top, cutting my perfectly cleaned beef heart into 1-3 oz. strips, then packing it in two packages because I said I'd be freezing half of it. I live in Ridgewood, but this kind of care, and the quality of the meat, keep me stopping by whenever I'm in the neighborhood. read more

I called The Meat Hook to ask if they had prime rib available and the guy on the phone told me they had plenty and to come in. I asked if I should order if first and he said it was not necessary. I arrived 30 minutes later and asked the butcher for 4 bone prime rib, deboned and tied. Annoyed that I knew what I wanted, he rolled his eyes and said, "how many people are you having?" I said 8 and he said oh then you need a 4 bone roast. Um, yeah...I guess he had to be the expert? He huffed away into the walk in and came back and said they "have only one prime rib left and it was only big enough for the 3 people." I told him I just called and the store said they had plenty of prime ribs, what happened?! The guy says "well you didn't speak to me!" WTF? I asked how could the information be so erroneous and he said "I don't know and I don't care." I responded "So clearly you are just a dick" and left. The guy was a complete db and spends more time perfecting his "authentic" "crafted working man's" Williamsburg "aesthetic" rather than doing his service job. I am sure mommy and daddy paid to get him to NYC from wherever he is from but clearly this guy is not and never will be a true New Yorker. We don't act that way to each other. When you (and the owner owner) read this you jerk, I have lived in this city for 60 years and if you knew anything about "authentic Brooklyn" you would have gotten your ass kicked as soon as your shift was over. If I were the owner I would fire this guy immediately. Do not go here. Went to Paisano's to buy a $250 roast instead. Far superior service. The Meat Hook's loss. read more

I came here on Sunday with a friend of mine. He's a big fan of theirs and follows them on IG and all that jazz. It's a cute little shop. Not a huge selection of cuts and meats, but it's a well curated selection. If I lived closer around here I'd pick up some cuts for a nice meal. The staff was very friendly. This used to be my favorite butcher in Brooklyn; it is truly unfortunate that the employees think they are above serving people or selling something that is not in the display. I asked for them to cut a ribeye and they essentially said we don't cut rib eyes to order. Excuse me! This place seems to have an OK selection of meats but is wildly overpriced. While the staff seemed friendly and hip, they lacked the knowledge of a traditional butcher. Part of the charm of going to a butcher is the expertise that they can offer along with the guidance while selecting the meats. This place feels like if Starbucks started specializing in meats. When considering the other butcher options in a 4 block radius I will stick to my cash-only old school butchers. This place has the best hamburgers I have ever tasted. I don't know what they season them with, but they are delicious. Their meat is always fresh and the people working the counter are helpful and knowledgeable. They have a wide variety of everything including specialty sauces. Last week I bought a Rib Eye steak which cost me $46.84 (that's one steak) At that price I expected a great taste and very tender. I cooked it using a digital thermometer to make sure I did not over cook it Much to may surprise, the steak was not tender and not very tasty. That will be the last time I go to that store. You are better off going to COSTCO and buy there Rib Steaks, much better quality and much better price. read more

I mean yeah, the meat's expensive - turns out treating food animals well costs a lot more than factory farming them. But damn, you get what you pay for. My most recent delightful experience was a Thanksgiving capon. Reserved it online (with $25 paid up front) and on my pickup day just waltzed in and got it (with a few other meatly necessities). Very smooth process and holy cow, was that bird good. They aren't close enough for me to be as regular a customer as I'd like, but if I need some REALLY good meat, it's worth a special trip. Love this place, been coming for years. New location is a nice worthy addition to Graham Ave's ever-thinning butcher row. That being said, yes, grass-fed beef is pricey, but don't label fatty, chewy beef shoulder as $17 lb 'Delmonico Steak'. While there's allot of debate RE what exactly that cut is, it's certainly not this cut simply bcs there's a string wrapped around it. Grilling or pan searing what they're selling as a 'steak' and getting a decent result is impossible as there's too much fat and connective tissue. At medium rare, you end up w a chewy mess. It should only be sold as a braising or roasting option, NOT a steak. Granted, I started this review a while ago after spending $30 on that BS and just finishing it now, but since being back I've continued to notice dodger cuts being labeled this and that. I've bought their 'Denver Steak' many times over the years, and hv had some awesome meals, but what they present as said cut in the case sort of continues to evolve and what I ate this year seems disappointingly inconsistent w the shape and texture of the 'same cut' from last year. All that being said, I realize this is a boutique operation, they work w what they have, and being 'different' is a part of the M.O., but there's just an air of cynicism w regards to the perceived ignorance of their customers that kind of hangs in the air there. 'Lets call this shoulder blade Flatiron Steak and charge more bcs these new Williamsburg ppl don't know jack about meat and I had to move to Queens so screw em.' Eyeball roll. I do hope this place doesn't go the way of Brooklyn Kitchen but they need to step it up. I love the Meat Hook. The staff is friendly, they have local produce so I can avoid the crowd at the McCarren farmer's market, and of course the meat selection is great. The name the Meat Hook is misleading in a way because it is a small little grocery store as well. But of course they have all types of meat in all different shapes and sizes. It's so great. I live in Switzerland and have tried at different times of the day - all times listed as their business hours. New location is awesome, and the selection is getting better by the week. Really enjoy being able to walk in and have a conversation with the guys and gals behind the counter, and feel like I am learning more and more. Prices can be a bit steep so its not an everyday kind of place for most I would assume.... But as they say, you get what you pay for, and I generally have been very pleased with what we have had from the Meat Hook, both pre and post move to their new location. Also nice to have a solid produce selection there if you are in a rush, although the prices on items there are a bit steep versus other spots on the Graham drag. The waiting / shopping area can get very cramped quickly on a busy day (e.g. all weekend) so might be best to try off-hours and you will get a much better experience when you can talk to the people there, and let them help you, and who knows you might even learn something new, or even better try something you wouldn't have if you didn't ask! All in all, very happy to have this even closer to where we are, and our family is eating amazing meals thanks to the great items they are offering the community. Oh, and if you are there around lunch, and are in a rush, they might have a few sandwiches made at the checkout, which are not to be missed if you don't have time to swing by the full on sandwich shop. read more
