This place is like a cake or dessert which after having finishing it, you wish you had some more. We had a good dinner but wished that the experience could have been better for sure. The gentleman at the counter who received us was kind enough to bring over a cake with a candle, as it was my birthday and that with a mango juice we requested outside of the menu for our 2 yr old were both covered on the house. Now when it comes to the food, we ordered a Gobi Manchurian, Baingan Bharta with Naan and a plate of vegetable biryani. The Manchurian was cold and lacked salt that I had to request to have rest of the order served hot which was taken care. But we found the Baingan more oily and the biryani not being extraordinary (portion size was huge for two adults) But overall, they have great ambiance and the close-by parking is street parking which might be tight on rush hours. read more

We made reservations first. Parking was plentiful and easy on the street. It sure is big and beautiful. The one waiter working the whole restaurant was very professional and kind. He seated us ever so promptly. The iced tea was fresh and delicious. We got yummy chicken 65 & another chicken dish.... That was so amazingly flavorful and delicious. Yeah it's a good restaurant i cannot lie. But I came on the day before Mother's day and they already started using the Mother's day special menu. As a vegetarian, I had barely any options on the special menu and when I asked to order from their main menu, I was denied. The food that I was able to eat wasn't bad but there were some appetizers that I wanted from the main menu. Please fix this. read more

This review is strictly for happy hour. I noticed all the other reviews slamming dinner service. We met a large group of 20+ friends here for a recent happy hour. The appetizers we ordered were great. The staff did a good job juggling our large group at the bar along with separate checks. The ambiance and vibe of the bar and downstairs dining area is really nice. I reviewing the dinner menu, the prices did seem high to portion sizes. I don't think we would come here for dinner, but if the opportunity arose, we would come back for happy hour. read more

We reserved prior to going, but honestly, the place was completely empty on Sunday for lunch. We stood in the lobby for 5 minutes, even called, and the phone rang right at the unmanned desk. I had to go upstairs as a last ditch before walking back out The owner/manager was apparently handling a massive party of 35 people upstairs Anyhooo, we were sat and promptly served bite-sized fried poppadums with trio of chutney. Appetizers- shikampuri kebab and chaat were served promptly. Both were lower than mediocre. 1) Kebabs were 2 pcs for 16$ 2) Chaat was ONE aloo tikki(harder than pumice stone) and chhole surrounded by water crackers for 17$ Entrées: 1) lamb Rogan Josh was 50$ for 2 .5 pcs of hardest pieces of meat with over oiled gravy ( it was definitely leftover curry re-heated many times) 2) chicken vindaloo was same 3 pcs for 50$ and hard-charred baby potatoes in sweet gravy 3) pondicherry sea bass 59$ (almost halwa-esque) was as if the fish was rotten, in 3 colored cauliflower puree. It was the worst dish of the lot. 4) dal fry was one cup for 24$ was only good thing 5) good tandoori rotis Waaaaaaay overpriced and stale-reheated food. The staff of one server and the owner-manager were the most sad looking staff. They actually made us feel unwelcome and a bother. This place is interesting. It's really spacious, big and beautiful, but not full with many people. The food is solid with the portions are so incredibly small. We were a large group and found that we had to order so many different things because it was really hard to share anything. Truly an entrée cannot be shared by more than two people. Over $140 for lunch for 3 - no alcohol . Not worth it. (take a look at Michael N.'s review of 3/4/25) Went in recently for lunch. Place was deserted. That should have been first clue. Food was mediocre at best. The service was fine - I can't complain about that. Although, when we first arrived and were ordering appetizers, I specifically asked whether naan and rita (or other dip) would be brought to the table - the waiter said yes. It wasn't, and then he asked if we wanted it as an extra, and we were then charged for it. This was the first time I have gone to an Indian restaurant (or any restaurant) where it wasn't complimentary - it's flatbread. The restaurant also does something really sneaky. Don't take my word for it, take a look at the menu for yourself. I ordered a vegetarian dish, which I initially thought came with rice. It does not! They have an "elevated" Indian menu which is essentially the regular menu with sides. The elevated menu is essentially an upcharge. Finally, this is one of those places that tacks on a 20% gratuity fee regardless of the size of the party. We only had 3 people. It's extremely off-putting. I am guessing that they have to charge these types of prices to pay for the rent at the location. I wouldn't go back. And one of the main reasons I would not go back is because if they have to upcharge people without them knowing about it, what are they doing relative to the food ? Think about it. read more

PSA, NO HIGH CHAIRS!! We thought the hostess was kidding when he said they didnt have any high chairs but he was not. Also, we were given menus looking at both the American dishes as well as Indian dishes. We werent told until it was time to order that the chef for American food was not in. Even though the food was delicious(and expensive), portions were very small. We ordered kebab(I say it in singular form because that's what came) for appetizer, it was half a kebab..CUT in half. My wife and I looked at each other confused. Good thing we ordered multiple apps and multiple entrees. Service was decent. We wouldn't go back to dine-in but would consider ordering to-go. read more

Had dinner to celebrate a milestone birthday with a few friends. Ambience was decent though seating is limited. Tried the Ghee Roast lamb, paneer kababs and cilantro paneer tikka which were decent but food portions were very small. The chicken vindaloo and marinated stuffed eggplant were served cold and had to be sent back. They did fix the eggplant dish which was good but the vindaloo was just heated in a microwave - taste was very average. Portions were again very small. They did offer everyone a complimentary fruit juice and a lassi type dessert. Overall - the food was not at all worth the steep prices charged. read more

Takeout order 6-27-28 of Goat Handi - When I brought it home - the smell was of masala "gone bad" and dish had LOTS of cream - who puts cream in Goat Handi?? Today AM got a nasty stomach upset with extreme cramping - had NOT eaten anything except the Goat from previous night, which was obvious culprit - I rate the $28 Goat as BAD and this restaurant as pathetic...Will NEVER go back. Diners decide at your own risk whether to go there and give your $$ to these guys. This sounded like a good destination for both lovers and non-lovers of Indian cuisine. The setting was upscale, but so were the prices. We chose from the Happy Hour menu since the main menu was much pricier than we anticipated. The Happy Hour options were limited. The food was okay, but not stellar. The free chips were too spicy for my parents, even without any of the dips (I did love the tamarind dip). A non-spicy option is essential. The sausages in the charcuterie plate all tasted the same and were not particularly interesting. The basil chicken was bland. Mushroom samosas were tasty but a bit overwhelmed by the goat cheese. The mussels were the best item we tried. Service was good but the drinks took a long time to arrive, considering there were few customers. Dining at THE MAURYAS was an awesome experience. The physical environment reflected the goal of being at a special place for dining. Having an opportunity to have a choice of American and Indian cuisine was an unexpected bonus. Our choice of Indian dishes proved to be a most tasteful reward. My wife treated me to a birthday dinner at The Mauryas, which we wanted to try as Princeton has a need for an elevated Indian restaurant. The net verdict is disappointing. If you are going to demand premium prices (which is fine) then the restaurant has to deliver on service and taste that is reflective of that pricing/ambiance. Unfortunately, both were lacking. Service was mediocre (not filling up water in timely fashion for instance, serving glasses of wine without bringing out the bottle and having the customer approve of the choice with a taste before filling up the glass, etc). More importantly the taste was lacking, mostly little flavor to flavorless (surprising for an Indian restaurant) and dry (some of the dishes screaming for some sort of sauce, outsize of the curry dishes - if you are going to charge $59 for a red snapper it better have flavor and be moist). A few appetizers (beetroot tikki) are small and served cold, which is disappointing when compared to what other elevated Indian restaurants deliver for the same dish. The restaurant would be better served to look at some of the leading Indian restaurants in NJ (Aarzu in Freehold, or 4 Monkey Bistro in Chatham) which are elevated Indian dining experience that mostly executes with taste and service. There is potential here, needs some tweaks and it could be something great. Will likely not return, until I start hearing more consistent, positive feedback. read more
