The ambience is amazing and among the best of any bookstore I've been to. They have several comfortable chairs and couch spaces to sit and read. I brought my coffee and read the synopses of a few books while I was deciding which ones to buy. The books are very well sorted categorically and also alphabetically. They have a great selection of books in several genres - all for unbelievably great prices! I ended up buying two thriller books and will return to buy board games and more books sometime. The employees are super friendly and are very well versed with the inventory if you need help finding books.

What made me want to visit The Open Book was their window showcase of Where's Waldo seek and find books (my fav)! We walked into a beautiful bookstore. We walked around pointing to all the books we like when I saw the book for me! (I mean, my grandson). It's the ABC's of Virginia!! I grabbed that book so fast and went right to check out. I really wanted this item but how horrible to arrive to the store only to find out it was closed. My confirmation email and their phone recording message states they're open until 9:00 p.m. I later found out as if it wasn't obvious, the message was not updated so I had to drive back home. Over a 3-hour drive and did not receive my order. The next day I called customer service to explain what had happened and the first response I received was I could go back to pick it up. Are you kidding me? I already know that but seeing how I already spent three hours of my time the night prior trying to pick it up, that does not suffice me. After my customer service representative spoke with the store on the phone who agreed to hold the item for me until I could come pick it up, I still was not satisfied. How was this helping me? I had to suggest it being shipped to me. I then realized my customer service representative wasn't too bright. When they got back from hold speaking with the store they informed me that the store cannot personally ship it. So I had to ask my representative if they could ship it from their warehouse or wherever. The representative finally looked and saw there wete no more available. They were completely sold out as well. Now I had no choice but to go down to the store to pick up my item. Why all this hassle over an item? This was the only original I could find after searching the internet for 2 weeks. I let my customer service representative know this was still not okay and I wanted to be compensated for my time and gas. They had to speak with their manager who agreed to give me a $10 gift card towards my purchase. Since I had no other option to purchase an original anywhere else, I decided to go ahead and make the drive back down to pick up the item. We did learn since it was sold out everywhere else the price had decreased again and my item would end up being pretty much free. Experiencing rush hour traffic this time, convincing my son to drive, and using my EZ pass, we finally arrived again at the mall to pick up the item. I'm able to walk into the store this time because they are open and notice they do have a good selection of Harry Potter items that I couldn't help looking at but had to put down because they were a little expensive. Very unique but a little expensive no less. I go to the counter to pick up my order and when the cashier retrieves it and puts it on the table I am in shock and disbelief! The item I ordered was not what was pictured on line as the original but a version I could have purchased anywhere else. I could not believe it! Of course there was nothing that they could do, although she did confirm this you was the same as my order number. I did show her the picture online of the item and how it did not match the picture I had but of course there was nothing else she could do. Wow! I took the item and my son and I roamed around the mall to await the traffic. When we finally left it was raining and of course that meant even more traffic for our drive back home. This was a catastrophic experience. Yes it definitely could be worse but is that what we want to tell ourselves as consumers when we purchase an item we've searched for and already had difficulty obtaining? No!

The store is interesting in the aspect that it is divided into two section with stairs. A lot of confusion could go on with that. I went to the fiction section because that is where I figured the book series would be. However, it was not. My next venture was to go to the Young Adult section to search. I just wasn't finding it. I made my way to the register to find someone to help. Because I didn't see anyone on the floor that looked like they worked there. When I told them what I was looking for, and I was specific here with it being a series, they proceeded to take me to the section to a single book. I was like, yeah, great. I had to act like I was appreciative that they brought me to a single book and not the series. When I asked about the series again I was finally told they didn't have the complete series. They basically wasted both of our time by taking a journey to a section that didn't have what I wanted. I can see why so many of these are closing up shop.

The chef pants I found were made of a strong material. The material felt strong and would not rip when I squat. I have had two other type of pants that have split on me and I found that annoying. Solomon informed me there were be more of the pants coming in, but he did not know when. The black pants were on backorder and I should check back in a week or so. After picking out a few styles and sizes to try on, Whitney showed me to a changing room and said she could look for additional sizes if I needed them. I found a set I really liked and asked Whitney if she would give me her opinion on how they looked, since I was shopping solo. She confirmed that the fit looked fine, so I set off to the racks to find additional colors in my sizes. When I was having difficulty locating an additional pair of pants, Whitney checked the back for me. Although they didn't have any in stock, she said it would be easy to look up the style number on their website to order additional pairs. She also noted I could choose to have them shipped to the store or home, depending on my preference. Checkout was very easy, although their machine required me to swipe my card rather than inserting the chip or scanning my watch. The prices were reasonable for everything I needed. I loved all the different colors and sizes they had in stock. Whitney provided me with excellent service throughout my visit. Although I'm hoping these scrubs will be a one-time purchase to get me through the rest of this school year, I know where to go if I need more in the future!

I became a regular at the store and sadly moved away in the beginning of 2025. But I still purchase items for work through them because the prices cannot be beat. FMJ is like no other military surplus store I've ever been to. The selection is better than anything I've seen. Over the years I've collected many different items. Some for work, others for my home office collection. But every time I enter the store, for better or worse I always leave with something. They stay busy on social media as well and are very interactive. Check them out on Instagram if you have one, sometimes you can see some of the surplus on there before it hits their shelves. Easiest 5/5 stars I've ever given. Next time I'm in the DMV I will be stopping by. It's tradition at this point.
