I had the pleasure of staying at the Madrones for the first time this past month when I was in for Pinotfest. This is the ideal spot for anyone looking for a true escape, privacy and comfort. My room (#3) was in the newly-developed back section, and the appointments were perfect, from the linens, to the bath, down to special little touches like the granola left for first-morning breakfast. The room decor was incredibly tasteful, the bed itself both gorgeous and comfortable, and the views of the hills and vineyards nearby. Access to the room includes availability of a lovely little outdoor patio with cafe tables, which was a nice place to catch some sun. The proprietor/owner Jim gets all the credit for the vibe and the decor. He has also planted the beautiful gardens on the property. Jim was always available if I needed him, very helpful with everything from my bags, to suggesting a good running path for me. The other huge bonus of this location is that it's walking distance to the absolute best tasting rooms in the area, including Balo, Goldeneye and Drew. I can't wait to go back, especially with the addition of the restaurant that Jim is opening this summer! You can't miss with this place. read more

This is my second stay at The Madrones... LOVE! The property is located on Hwy 128 so just a bit busy but you will hear zero noise as it is in a secluded area... A slice of Heaven! Not your typical hotel/Inn... My first visit I was greeted by the owner, as I approached the lobby he called to me by my first name! The second visit was a late check-in so really self service but a cute envelope with my name on the front... Mediterranean style and upscale! Small courtyard in front and the bonus is you have six tasting rooms onsite... Such as great little property, what's not to love?? You do have to pay up front and there is no refund policy so make sure you are locked in if you come. We had to leave a day early and lost one nights stay although you know this going in so it was no surprise. Even with the no refund policy I would still stay here over any other hotel in the area! read more

This delightful Italiante complex provided us the perfect resting place during our two-day visit in Anderson Valley. Our suite of rooms was perfect. The sitting room, bedroom and bathroom provided the right amount of space with beautiful appointments and a comfy bed. Light breakfast goodies were provided and a small fridge was available to chill wine. The gardens are lovingly maintained and we had a view of the property from our vine surrounded window. We visited mid-week so the restaurant and several of the tasting rooms were closed. Blink was open however and we sampled some delicious wine. We definitely would stay here again. The mid-winter special was an added bonus. read more

Told people to stay here for my wedding and strongly regret that - will admonish all friends and family to avoid this place. This is truly a great find. My wife and I did some research and found The Madrones online and it's everything we imagined and then some. The owner of the property, Jim, is very friendly and easygoing and the perfect host for a laid back getaway. The room itself was very comfortable, especially the bed........we slept like babies for 10 hours! We liked it so much that we'll be buying the same sheets for our home. All the nearby food and wine recommendations were a big hit. One of our favorite wineries, Drew, is located on the property and had fantastic pinots on their tasting menu. Needless to say, we wished we stayed longer and will be back the first chance we get. read more

Clean, modern, comfortable furnishings and all the amenities you could need for your stay - fridge, microwave, breakfast items, a nespresso machine. We enjoyed their winter midweek special just before Christmas. This is a great spot just 45 minutes from Mendocino and about 10 minutes from Hendy Woods and two Apple orchards. We stayed in guest quarters one, a cozy room with a sitting area perfect for a single person or couple. We got to peek into guest quarters two down the hall and it looked perfect for a small family or even two couples who don't mind sharing a bathroom. We had a mini fridge and microwave, allowing us to manage some dietary restrictions. And they stock the fridge with juice, water, yogurt and homemade banana bread. They also provide cereal, milk, coffee, and tea. The bed was comfy, and Cyndee was very welcoming. This was a restful midweek getaway. I can see coming back on my own to do some writing. read more

Stayed in the Back Porch at the Brambles, in a beautiful grove of Redwoods. Peaceful and quiet, and the interior is understated but very nicely done. Mendocino is an easy day trip, there are lots of good wineries, and the Bewildered Pig is a special place for dinner. Highly recommended! read more

The cost of staying at The Madrones was comparable to other hotels in the area. It was spacious and quiet. The people in the hotel, the restaurant and wine tasting rooms were very nice. We stayed in Guest Quarters IV in room #4. It was great except for the fact that once the sun came up the skylight shone light directly into the face of anyone sleeping in one of the queen beds. The skylight needs a shade. read more

Beautiful, comfortable, and quiet! We stayed in the Garden view and it was "almost" perfect. (Perfect for me would have been with a tub but that is just my preference and the gigantic, double headed shower was fine. Some of the other rooms have tubs if that is your preference). The bed and sheets are amazing and the Nespresso machine & morning snacks were appreciated. I was able to take a peek at the rooms closest to the road and they are both beautiful too and very quiet due to the double paned windows. Stone & Embers was closed but we had fantastic meals at Lauren's and Aquarelle. I love Anderson Valley! read more

I'd like to live here. Such a gracious warm and beautifully appointed hideaway in the redwoods. The tasting rooms of two of my favorite wineries (Bink and Drew) are nearby. Not a B&B and not a hotel, more like a classic European Finca of the highest order. A very special place for those who seek refinement, privacy and beauty. read more

The Madrones is a great place to get away from it all, it is in the middle of Pinot noir wine country and hosts 3 separate tasting rooms on site plus a pizza restaurant. All the staff is excellent and they do allow pets. The Madrones is located nearby some small friendly towns which is great compared to living in mega-cities which is the world that I normally live in. I would highly recommend this home away from home to anyone, especially to lovers. read more

A beautiful Mediterranean estate with a garden and nine guest rooms. Not a B&B, but not a hotel either. You are warmly greeted by Cyndee and then given your space and privacy for the remainder of your stay. If you are a high-maintenance guest, this is NOT the place for you. Minimal maid service. Very limited hours & days for on-site restaurant. But, if you want a peaceful setting to explore Anderson Valley from, this is your place. Microwave and mini-fridge in-room with daily replenishment of breakfast items like yogurt, cereal, juice, fresh fruit, and banana bread. We were celebrating our birthdays and upcoming wedding anniversary, so we were surprised with a bottle of Signal Ridge champagne to enjoy upon arrival. All guests get free passes to the four tasting rooms on-site. We will definitely return to The Madrones! read more

We stayed 2 nights in January in the Garden Room. We highly recommend The Madrones, and this room in particular. You can lie in bed and look at the garden through floor to ceiling windows. The garden is nice even in winter, with different colors and textures. Beautifully decorated room and luxurious bathroom. The breakfast is fat free Greek yogurt and banana bread in the room's small fridge. My only complaint is that they only supply caffeinated coffee, but it's great tasting coffee! read more

We just had a wonderful girls' weekend getaway in Anderson Valley and Jim's magnificent house was a big part of it. Our party loves to cook so we took full advantage of the spacious and extremely well equipped kitchen. We took herbs, green beans, and tomatoes from the garden, and Jim also generously shared his home-canned preserves and chutneys with us. At night we would sit in the hot tub and gaze at the stars -- the sky so clear you could see the Milky Way... The next time I return to Anderson Valley I'll definitely be checking here f read more

Quiet, tranquil, beautiful. No need to rent an Italian villa when the Madrones is a mere two-and-a-half hours from home. Our suite was beautifully appointed and clean, and it overlooked the light-strung courtyard below. In addition to enjoying the hospitality of all in the Anderson Valley, the fabulous wineries and the five-star restaurants in the area, we spent time relaxing in adirondack chairs in the lush garden with owner Jim's sweet dog, Jake, at our feet. If you'd like to take advantage of the proximity of wine country from the Bay Area, but want to get away from the throngs of tourists in Napa and Sonoma, escape to Anderson Valley and stay at The Madrones or their sister property at The Brambles. This review is overdue as I've been there 3x since the beginning of 2018 - and I've never stayed 3 times (different accommodations) at the same place! I wasn't sure what to expect, but once I arrived, I loved everything - the décor, spacious accommodations (my fave was The Front Door at the Brambles, amazing shower - seriously), cleanliness, the breakfast treats in the fridge, being secluded in the midst of glorious redwoods, wine tasting on the property and a stone's throw away. I highly recommend having a meal at Stone and Embers, but it was also easy to get to Boonville for additional dining options. During my first stay, I did notice a smell to the water, which was easily remedied with the Brita, but during my last visit, I inadvertently learned that a new filtration system has since been installed and problem solved! I'm not sure why there are negative reviews about Jim, the property owner, but I found him to be friendly and gracious, and truly credit him with taking special care, even with the smallest of details. While I've stayed on the coast, my choice would definitely be the cozy, laid back luxury of the Madrones. read more

I cannot say enough positive things about the Madrones. My husband and I absolutely loved our time here. The innkeeper, Cindy, made us feel so welcome and gave us a great overview of Andersen Valley wine country. The rooms are beautifully decorated and spacious. The banana nut bread stocked in the fridge for breakfast and nespresso coffee was the perfect start to our days in the valley. Also, the location of the Madrones is unbeatable. The Madrones is a short drive from downtown Boonville, which has great options for lunch or dinner, and there are 5 wineries within walking distance of the property. We are already planning our next trip! read more

The Madrones is beautiful! My husband and I have stayed many places in Anderson Valley over recent years and the Madrones is certainly one of the most elegant. Jim is very friendly and warm. Our only criticism (which was mitigated by so many positives) is that the rooms are not cleaned between nights. In spite of clear messaging from Jim in his confirmation email, we forgot this fact and were surprised by it. Ultimately, this was not an issue for us, but guests should be prepared. We still highly recommend as a lovely getaway! read more

My husband and I nestled in at The Madrones for two nights, Jan 2 - 4, 2014. This was the finale to a road trip that began in Los Angeles, stopped in Monterey for a night and aquarium visit, 3 nights with friends over the New Year in Occidental (NW Sonoma Cnty) and then on to the Anderson Valley to completely chill out on our own. I was expecting it to be quiet and, and as we were the only guests, we felt as if we were staying on a private estate. The room we chose, #4, faces the vineyard and was well decorated and spacious. Also aware that there would be no breakfast with the room, there is a small fridge stocked with yogurt, juices and granola which were left for us to get a great healthy start to our day. Much better than a stale muffin or do it yourself waffle! Philo is a very small community and much in the area is closed in January, particularly right after the new year. It was recommended that our first night we eat at Lauren's in Booneville and it was marvelous. A true local establishment with great food, modest prices and Lauren on the premises. The next day we did the drive to the coast and spent the early part of the day in Mendocino, taking the 128 back to Philo, stopping at some wonderful wineries on our way back to the Madrones. Dinner that evening was at a local French restaurant, Coq au Vin and we again were impressed by all the dining locals wishing each other a happy new year. It was a lovely and relaxing stay largely because of the abundance of natural beauty and the absence of invasive stimulation. I was made aware, prior to coming, that the restaurant on the premises, Stone and Embers, would be closed but did not know that the shop Sun and Cricket was closed permanently. We never met Jim, which was a disappointment after reading about how interesting and friendly he was from other reviewers, but will give a special "shout out" to Cyndee who assisted with anything we needed from freshly picked apples to dinner information. Thank you, Cyndee! We would stay again if coming to the Anderson Valley and would recommend The Madrones to anyone looking for a path less taken. read more

A great find if you don't care for impersonal hotels or the lack of privacy of a B&B. Our suite, the smallest of four was tastefully decorated, likely due to Jim's background in interior design. Plenty of nice touches including a small fridge with milk, yogurt, local apple juice and granola near the sink. A Nespresso machine dispensed the coffee. As noted in some earlier Yelp reviews, the sheets are worth mentioning as it is hard to get out of bed because they are so comfy. In fact, the sheets are microfiber made by ComphyCo. All four tasting rooms were open and a tasting pass was supplied by Jim. There is also a gourmet pizza café on the grounds. We usually camp at Hendy, so this was the lap of luxury for us. read more

We had a wonderful stay at The Madrones. Cindy, the manager, was helpful, cheerful, delightful in every way. We received a very warm welcome. Due to previous booking and our need to bring our dog, we stayed in two different rooms. The Living Room was magnificent--I felt like I was in my home! The Garden Room was less grand, but charming and beautiful in its own right. We enjoyed wine tasting in all 3 rooms (though we were so taken with Bink that we joined their club. We enjoyed one dinner and one lunch at the onsite restaurant which was beautiful, healthy, bountiful food, graciously served. We'll be back for sure! read more

My wife and I returned to the valley for a getaway this weekend after being married nearby this summer. We had guests of the wedding stay here and they absolutely raved about the accommodations. Since the feedback was so positive we decided to book one of the newer rooms and were stunned when we entered the room (Living Room). It was huge, beautifully appointed and had a small kitchen. In addition, the Kuerig was perfect for this caffeine addict and the bed was incredibly comfortable. The grounds have been nicely developed and there are several great tasting rooms and the best restaurant in the valley on the property. You may be tempted to never leave the premises but please get out and experience this amazing valley and certainly consider this amazing place for your home base. read more

If you want to be pampered but have discreet privacy, if you want to wake up in a luxurious room and look out at the vineyards, this is the place for you! We have stayed twice now and will keep coming back. It's a plus to have 4 wine tasting rooms right there on the hotel grounds. You can taste and then go back to your room to rest! We booked a last-minute stay for one night in the Faller's Cabin on Thanksgiving, and so glad we did! The two cabins that are part of the Brambles property (Fallers and Loggers) are just down the road from the Madrones complex. For us, this wasn't an inconvenience in the least and actually was really nice and private feeling, with gorgeous natural views from the windows. The two cabins sit side by side on a ridge above the owner's property which is lush and green and filled with giant redwoods and forest growth. (We've read they are working to expand lodging and walking paths for the future.) The cabin really surprised us in terms of comfort and decor-- it was so cozy and homelike, with a cool slightly quirky design sensibility. They'd left us a bottle of wine for the holiday which was such a nice touch, especially since the tasting rooms were closed Thanksgiving Day (rightfully so!). Plus fresh baked banana bread and breakfast goodies, yum. I think other reviews mentioned this, but the bed was notably comfortable! We'd expected a true "work-in-progress" since their website sort of hinted at that, but we found everything extremely smooth and nice. At the rate they're offering, a super value! read more
