Madrones is a beautiful boutique resort in Anderson Valley, right in the heart of Mendocino wine country. The lovely guest rooms are individually designed and all are tastefully appointed with fine artwork, four poster beds, high ceilings and bay windows that make a stay there feel both comfortable and luxurious. The property also includes four boutique wine tasting rooms, a Sun and Cricket gift shop with interesting sundries, gorgeous grounds to relax, and an up and coming cafe called Stone and Embers that was on the verge of completion during our stay in late July and plans to be open this month. The manager Jim is a gracious and personable host. We booked a stay fairly last minute, and Jim was able to accommodate us. The room we stayed in was fantastic! All the modern conveniences like a flat screen TV, Nespresso coffee machine, Wi-Fi, lavish and original decor, a super comfy bed, and treats like warm croissants in the a.m. with some bottled juices and waters in the fridge. Little details like these go a long way...and his gardens are gorgeous, as well as the bird house, and the stonework of the oven to the tea pot in the center parking area is beautiful. The wineries on site--Drew, Signal Hill, Bink and Knez are top notch. Such friendly and informative staff, delicious vino (from chardonnay, rose, and albarino, to the region's famed pinot noir). We've had the pleasure of staying at the Madrones many times now and each stay meets and exceeds our expectations. It's beautiful, cozy and wonderful no matter what time of year. Our host, Cyndy, knows us now and we get welcomed like family. That said, we received the same warm welcome the very first time we stayed at the Madrones. The previous restaurant, Stone and Embers, had amazing pizza but we are now looking forward to the new on-site restaurant coming soon. I still miss the bed that was in our suite. The man and I went up to the Anderson Valley to hit up my favorite wineries as a birthday treat and a sad goodbye to one of my last weekends in California. This being said we were in a mad scramble for a place to stay as our first arrangement fell through last minute. In comes Jim to save the day! We were able to book the Guest Suite 3 for our Saturday night stay and it was absolutly wonderful. This isnt a full service cater to you every beck and call whim B&B but rather is a nice little guest room perfect for those people that need a home base on their winery adventures. Check in was super easy, a note with our keys was left for us so we could check in any time we needed after wine tasting. The fridge was stocked with goodies to assist us on our first morning. Passes were left for us to enjoy the four tasting rooms that are on site, and a comprehensive list of to-dos was there as well for those that may not be as frequent a visitor as myself. The bed was HUGE... and comfy. I enjoy a firm bed with fluffy soft pillows so it was heaven for me. The room truly had everything we needed to coe back from wine tasting get cleaned up and head out for dinner. Sadly Stone and Embers downstaris was closed by the time we were ready for dinenr but the smells wafting up to our room made us mouth watering hungry. I think what I lvoed most about this place as I felt like I was staying as a privalged guest in a firneds estate in the country. We were given our privacy and the entire area is so beautiufl it wa simply peaceful. We didnt hear a peeps from any of our neighbors, and while we were able to hear some dull noise from the resturant it was gone by 8:30. I hate to gush so lovingly about this place because I want to keep it for myself but I must give it the credit it has due!!! Incredible!!! (and not in a good way) I booked at The Madrones before the Kincaid fire disaster struck. On October 28th, the hotel posted "Going into our forth day without power, we are staying close to home, near the hearth and thinking of those who's homes are threatened. Stay safe" on their Facebook page. When I asked to cancel the next day, as the fire was less than 10% contained, and to come again at a more suitable time (i.e., with no risk of evacuation, with no power outages, with no smoke), they refused. Their cancellation policy is apparently more important than the health and safety of their guests. To add insult to injury they told me I was a jerk and unwelcome there. read more

My husband and I stopped in Philo before heading to the coast for 3 days. Boy were we pleasantly surprised! The Madrones is a gorgeous property with lovey gardens you can roam about along with at least 3 local winery tasting rooms, BONUS! Only draw back was we went on a Wednesday and the place is pretty quiet before the weekend action which starts on Thursday. We loved the peace and quite but it was hard to find a place for a late dinner. Also, the Anderson Valley is a hidden gem for wine tasting Pinot Noirs and not a lot of traffic especially like I mentioned mid week. We had most places to ourselves learning so much about the wine and area from each winery. read more

My wife and I just returned from our honeymoon and spent two nights at The Madrones, it was a perfect property in a fantastic location. Jim has done a wonderful job decorating, remodeling and furnishing his properties in Anderson Valley. He is also very accommodating, since our arrival was going to be after hours he took the time to make sure the property was ready for us and the keys were easy to find. The unit(s) have central A/C (shared between the two rental units), high-speed wireless internet access and DirectTV for those times you just want to relax. Location is perfect with (currently) two wineries located in the grounds of the property. Both wineries, Drew & Lula, are fantastic and if you are a pinot noir lover... you will definitely want to stop by both of these tasting rooms. You can't go wrong staying at the Madrones, it is definitely on the top of our list when we return to visit the wineries. read more

The Madrones was just terrific, an absolutely idyllic place. I hesitated booking because of concerns that (as an apartment over wine tasting rooms) the Madrones might not be as quiet or peaceful as we were looking for. That was absolutely not an issue. Every day, the wine tasting rooms didn't open up until 11:00 (well after we were up) and the place was quiet daily by 5:00 when they shut. Even during the daytime, it was lovely and peaceful, truly a sanctuary. Pros Beautifully decorated Comfortable beds and linens TV (never turned it on) games, views of the vineyards from the windows. Full size fridge, plates, dishes, etc. BBQ outside in the garden (even though we didn't get to use it) Lovely, quiet gardens. Smooth, professional booking and check-in. Five wineries on site/next door (handy for the end of day tastings!) Cons We didn't realize that the kitchen was as well equipped as it was (this is our error, not The Madrones') and we would have brought more breakfast/lunch supplies if I had read the website more closely, or asked.... I didn't realize there was a BBQ available for use, and we might have decided to eat in one night. Again, this is our error..... It would be great if you guys had a small swimming pool......Just big enough to dip in in the heat of the day (summer) or a hot tub (winter). We will absolutely come again. Our 3 night stay in Faller's Cabin was wonderful. The cabin is spacious, well appointed and all systems (cooling/heating), satellite TV, wifi) work well. The grounds are beautiful, be sure an wander around. This was our second visit to the Madrones and we were initially disappointed that new restaurant does feature its' predecessor's, Stone and Embers, pizza. I just wanted to remind everyone out there that this place is truly a rip off. The owner, who goes by the name "Jim" lacks one very important skill, which is "customer service". He has None. It's all about profits !! As most of us know putting the customer first is top priority, especially in this type business. I unfortunately experienced the wrong end of the owners "greedy" mind. It basically came down to his word verses mine durning a dispute over a reservation. Guess who lost !! So next time your looking for a place to stay in the Anderson Valley I strongly urge you to look elsewhere. The Madrones has become a home away from home of sorts for my wife and I since we like coming to the Anderson Valley for wine tasting and trips to the beach. The madrones and the Brambles provide unique and comfortable accommodations nestled in the little town of Philo along the Navarro river. My wife and I enjoy the tastefully appointed rooms and well maintained grounds along with the quiet setting. We have stayed at other establishments in the area. The Madrones and Brambles were the best and are perfect for anyone who wants to get away and relax. read more

My wife and I stayed two nights in the Spare Rooms, amazing experience. The room was perfect, quiet, clean, comfortable, great place to crash after a long day of hiking and tasting. The breakfast items were perfect to enjoy on our porch each morning. For two city people, it was SO quiet at night which made for some great sleeping. Everyone we spoke with were so accommodating and friendly. The property itself is beautiful. We enjoyed some wine in the garden which was a perfect way to end the day. Four tasting rooms on property along with an excellent restaurant make it a perfect place to spend a few days. I cannot say enough good things about the Madrones and we will certainly be back. read more

I stayed in the Estate Guest Quarters IV room last weekend with my husband and mother in law. The room was perfect with a beautiful view of the vineyards. We were also conveniently located right next to Stone and Embers for delicious pizza! We didn't have any issues with our room. It was very nice and clean, and the mini fridge was stocked with some complimentary breakfast items, which I thought was a nice touch! We also had no issues with the WiFi. We are returning to The Madrones come May and can't say how my husband, myself and our pugglish pooch Lola enjoy a getaway to Anderson Valley and our time spent in The Living Room at The Madrones. This review is overdue, we've stayed a couple of times and everytime Cyndi has greeted us like family! The gardens, the tasting rooms onsite (especially Smith Story) are so nice and it's so convenient to spend a day wine tasting or heading up to the coast from this wonderful boutique hotel. This place is much more remote than it appears, and the management isn't at all interested in your comfort. We are elderly and found the nighttime drive to a restaurant 8 miles away to be extremely daunting. When we cancelled after one night, the hotel denied us a refund, and we had cancelled the night before! We were the ONLY guests in the entire place. Very spooky, and the vaunted restaurant and two tasting rooms weren't open. This trip was booked through Expedia, which was no help in obtaining a refund. read more

The Brambles was the Perfect Place for the Most Amazing Vacation!! This is my second trip to Anderson Valley, and it didn't disappoint. The first time we visited, we stayed at the Madrones, which was equally amazing as the Brambles. The Brambles was only part finished the first time we visited. However, for this trip, the Brambles had the Logger's Cabin open, and it was the perfect room for our trip. My husband and I were meeting a friend and staying for a long weekend. The Logger's Cabin room has two beds in separate bedrooms, so you can have your own sleeping space, but common areas to hang out. The kitchen and living room allowed great space to hangout and visit. The kitchen had everything you needed (coffee maker, plates, cups, silverware, sink, and stocked mini fridge). The stocked mini fridge had a variety of breakfast items and drinks, so you didn't have to leave your room in the morning to have a wonderful breakfast before starting the day. The porch had beautiful views and provided another space to hang out and not bother those that wanted to go to bed early or rest inside. I loved that the room had a remote control air conditioner/heater, so you could set the temp to what you wanted inside the cabin. The property is absolutely amazing with rooms that are basically separate cabins and far enough apart from each other, you feel like you are staying at your own house but you don't have to worry about a thing, since you are actually on vacation. We loved touring around the Valley, wine tasting at Toulouse and the three tasting rooms at the Madrones, wine and cheese pairing at Penny Royal, bubbly tasting at Roederer and beer tasting at Anderson Brewing Company. The service and atmosphere at all was simply amazing! Final note, we saw the finished wedding pavilion at the Brambles, and it is so beautiful. If you are thinking about a location for a wedding, you should look at the Brambles. If I were to renew my vows, the Brambles would be at the top of the list!! read more

We recently stayed at the Madrones Brambles because our usual go-to the Boonville Hotel was full-up. For an incredibly reasonable price, we had a very spacious, comfortable, and amazing cabin, with a small kitchenette, nice TV, and good heating. Service was prompt but relaxed -- due to logistical issues we didn't get in until late and thankfully we were able to pick up the key late and check out late, and any room issues, had they arisen, would have been resolved promptly given the responsiveness of the inn-keepers who were very professional, communicative, and accommodating throughout our stay. My only complaint: it would be nice if the Brambles sign were illuminated after dark. Given that these are a work in progress, this is a truly minor complaint, but given the climatic conditions of the north coast during winter (rainy, low visibility), it was slightly harrowing to find the location as the sun went down. Two other minor things: Stone and Embers is a small operation and can run out of pizza dough should you arrive late -- they are an excellent restaurant but a small one, nevertheless. For travel in the area: the Madrones website recommends Philo-Greenwood Road as a leisurely road, and I'm sure it is in the summer, but 128 is a better drive to the coast than Philo-Greenwood Road the rest of the year. All of that said, I'm very happy with our stay here. I would love to stay here again should the occasion arise. Very professional and kind, with excellent rooms. Looking forward to a get-away with my sisters and friend and although the place is beautiful, the owner's hospitality made the experience very off putting. The power was out when we arrived and although we understand it is not the fault of the hotel's, the owners should show up to make sure there was no additional problems caused by it especially when they told us the power had never gone out. It turned off the pumps to the water and must have blown out the pilot light so we took cold showers for two days (first day seemed like a fluke) and even had to microwave water just to rinse off. When we said something it basically got turned around on us and asked why we didn't complain. Well, we did complain when we realized it was a problem. However, there's really no solving problems when the owner tells you that we were the ones with issues since we arrived. No, not issues. We weren't expecting anything extraordinary but some hot water that did not smell like metal. And, when the owners aren't in the property, it's kind of hard to find someone to make a complaint to. Seems like owners took this on as a project but do not think either of them actually ever worked in the hospitality business, or customer service for that matter. I will not stay here again as the owners made us feel more like a burden than a guest. read more

Ive stayed all over the place and rented tons of houses from folks.. usually they might add up to 60 % of the hype.. THIS PLACE IS DIFFERENT. Jim, the owner, lives here. It is nestled in the Anderson Valley right next to Goldeneye Vineyards. The house itself is amaxingly HIGH COUNTRY CHIC without being a bit stuffy at all. 4 different places outside to eat and gather.. amaxing grounds and gardens.. We took a trip down the coast after our niece's college graduation from Humboldt State University. The last stop of this week long trek before heading home was Philo, Anderson Valley and the Madrones. A perfect way to end the trip. The folks that run the place are fantastic. They are in the midst of adding more accommodations to the property and if the suite we were in is any indication they will be amazing. Our suite was quite comfortable and had everything one would need. Just a beautiful place. I wish we had planned for another night there. With the many fine wineries located nearby and tasting rooms on the property it's a fantastic place to stay. We visited Toulouse and Husch on our way to the Madrones and then had lunch at Libby's, all wonderful. Goldeneye is right next door and there are a few others in short walking distance. Jim and Cindy were great hosts. Jim was "hiding" when we arrived (an hour early) but let us check in so that we could enjoy the room and wineries. Cindy showed us around the property including the new Garden Suite that will be available soon. They really went the extra mile for us as it was Tuesday and two of the four tasting rooms were closed, as was Stone and Embers. We did luck out as a large party booked Stone and Embers and Cindy was able to get us in early to enjoy a very nice meal. She also setup a tasting at Bink for us before dinner. Had a nice one night stay at The Madrones. The room was beautiful and quiet, grounds were lovely. My only problem was that the TV wouldn't work (texted but got no response). We wanted to watch the end of the Warriors game . Also the water pressure is a problem, but they are on a well. Let the management know that there was only one coffee cup. We were able to wander around and sit in the garden and enjoy the stars at night. The next day we headed out to do some wine tasting and come back to our comfy space. Incredibly warm, welcoming, comfortable stay in Anderson Valley. Wineries on site and within walking distance, close to parks for hiking, and within a half hour drive of the coast - absolutely perfect for a long weekend. We stayed with our pup, a five month old welsh terrier, and they provided a bed and bowl for him. For us humans, in addition to an amazingly comfortable room, a light breakfast including fresh banana bread was provided each day. We'll definitely be returning. read more

Beyond happy to find this amazing spot. We had lunch at Wickson first (AMAZING) and then did tastings at the tasting rooms on site, then stayed in a guest room. It was SO CUTE, Cindy and everyone at the desk/shop area are super sweet, thoughtful, and show a genuine desire to accommodate you. Being able to have such an incredible restaurant and tasting rooms all on the same property as you are staying is pretty phenomenal. The restaurant even offered adorable and wicked delicious room service in the form of a 4-course meal! On top of that they left us the most amazing breakfast in our fridge with yogurt, housemade granola (bomb), fresh fruit, milk, banana bread and coffee and tea. It felt really special and luxurious. The gardens and vineyards surrounding the property are beautiful, and the room was super spacious and lovely with ultra comfy beds.
