My wife and I had the pleasure of staying at the Madrones in 2024 and we were blown away by how beautiful the room and grounds were. If that wasn't good enough, the service was incredible, not just at the Madrones, but also at the Bohemian Chemist and Wickson Restaurant. If you are coming to the Anderson Valley, while there are many great options, you couldn't hope to stay somewhere nicer than the Madrones. Additionally, if you are a cannabis-consumer and want to stay somewhere pot-friendly, no other hotel in the valley has their own dispensary. read more

Wow! We just got back from a (2) night stay for a family wedding. I only got to see the guest quarters II and III, and these rooms were much nicer in person (vs the website photos), it's hard to capture the uplifting effects of those high ceilings. The furniture, decor, and amenities are really well thought out, from the coffee machine, to the plates and glassware, to the tall shower head, towels, and washcloths. The rooms were really clean and the bed was comfortable. I would return again, and I would highly recommend the Madrones to my friends. Next door, the Brambles is a wonderful wedding venue, we felt honored to be amongst all those magnificent redwood trees, be sure to bring a shawl, or jacket, because it gets cold when the sun goes down. read more

We stayed at the Brambles in the Back Porch room and it was secluded, peaceful, and an all around amazing stay. The bed was really comfortable and there was outdoor seating, which was really nice! This area is surrounded by redwood trees and has so much natural beauty. It was the perfect mini getaway that we were looking for and I loved how private and secluded it felt. We also loved that it was dog friendly. We enjoyed going wine tasting while in Anderson Valley and we just love this whole area. A truly unique destination with a rustic charm that makes you feel comfortable from the minute you walk through the doors. We stayed in the master and felt right at home. Of course, being next door to Goldeneye and Domain Anderson will help set the mood for a romantic evening. What a beautiful property! Booked a room in this boutique hotel for the weekend to enjoy some wine tasting in Anderson Valley, and pick up my allocation at Roederer Estate. The garden view room is quaint, comfortable, and equipped with well considered amenities. They have an in-house restaurant, Wickson, that I'm looking forward to try. At the lobby is Sun & Cricket, a small shop selling various items and accessories. Next door is The Bohemian Chemist where they offer "sun grown herbal cannabis, skin care, and wellness medicine." And they have three tasting rooms in the property. Pretty much everything you need for a nice and relaxing weekend is in The Madrones. And I'm looking forward to it. read more

A Beautiful Gem in the Redwoods Nestled within the majestic Redwoods of Anderson Valley in Philo, Mendocino County, California, The Madrones and its sister property The Brambles was the perfect location to host our company retreat. The quiet and understated luxury of this property/hotel along with the owners/proprietors (Jim and Brian) and their friendly and accommodating staff (Kila, Bernadette and others) made us feel so welcome and so comfortable. The Madrones is unique as it presents itself with a touch of European grandeur in the natural beauty of the emerald forest. The Madrones/Brambles is one of those rare instances where the website photos do not do the actual property justice. It more than exceeded our expectations. The Brambles provided the ideal environment for our company retreat. Located nearby in a grove of Redwoods the property had an event "Pavillion" that hosted our 20 person staff more than comfortably. The building also included a kitchen which were convenient for meals during retreat sessions. The accommodations at the Brambles while outside looked rustic were the epitome of comfort. The Wickson Restaurant on the property headed by Chefs Jason Azevedo and Jenny provided our catering and all of delicious meals all of which were made with locally sourced ingredients were on par with what you would find in the neighboring Napa-Sonoma counties. We highly recommend this property as an excellent location to get away from the hustle of city life to unwind, relax and to bond with your team! read more

Had an opportunity to spend the night in this beautiful, elegant, plant-friendly boutique hotel. Some nice jazz was playing when we entered. The decor was upscale and yet felt welcoming and warm. Surrounded by trees, with a lovely deck, it was the perfect place to wrap up our tour of the lovely Anderson Valley. So so quiet at night. A tiny bit of road noise in the morning, but we wrapped up and enjoyed coffee and a morning toke with the birds singing and squirrels scurrying. Lovely. Highly recommend! read more

LOVE The Madrones! Amazing property with gorgeous gardens. Comfortable bed and nice bedding. In the fridge was yogurt, granola and fresh fruit for breakfast and a small kitchenette with just what a couple needs for a nice little getaway. Amenities were nice as well. Thoughtful touches and somewhat casually eclectic decor. On site is a super cool art deco apothecary and gift shop with interesting books and just plain cool stuff- I wish I could have bought more! Nice staff and sweet Blanche was a friendly, silly and mischievous hostess! The packaging for their product lines ( The Bohemian Chemist and Spiritus Mundi) are a seriously orgasmic experience for anyone who appreciates packaging design. :-) Every item- down to the matches! lol - I'm pretty sure (unless you are a matchbox offianado) - you have never seen such cool matches before! Love everything about this business from their philosophy, growing practices and especially their thoughtfulness in products they grow. This is plant medicine grown as nature intended in the sunshine and without intervention of chemicals - allowing the plants to do what they do naturally. I've loved every product of theirs that I've tried. HONESTLY - I've become an un-official brand ambassador ever since I first found their products at Seaweed Holistics. The pricing on lodging ( for me ) was for 'special occasions' only and may be considered pretty 'Boogie' for some people. But for me, I think it is 'Boogie' in the best possible way! They've created an elegant, whimsical, beautiful experience and Blanche's sweet silly energy is the 'special sauce' that completes the homey, comfortable, safe and welcoming vibe that stay with you even after you've returned home. They have a restaurant and 2 wine tasting rooms onsite. We were originally going to stay 3 nights but added a 4th since we were enjoying ourselves so much. Only caveat- we were there mid-week and we found out that Tuesday/Wednesday is the 'weekend' for this area since it's a weekend getaway location. So we didn't get a chance to enjoy the onsite restaurant or wine tasting rooms as they are open Friday- Monday (I believe- check yourselves to make sure). Also- Many stores were closed in Mendacino. For me this was actually a nice time to go because we were able to go hike in the Redwoods and had the whole forest to ourselves! Not another car in the parking lot! We also checked out their other property down the road (The Brambles) - just peaked inside the unoccupied cottages and walked around the property. Will definitely be back and plan stay on this location as well- you are literally in a Redwood grove. Also plan on recommending the location for a good friend who's looking for a wedding venue. Hubby and I had a great time here with our dog! The Madrones has two pet friendly properties at the Brambles - Loggers Cabin and Fallers Cabin. We stayed at the Loggers which is right next to the Fallers. We were arriving past 6pm, so they arranged for a self check in where we picked up our keys and a map to get to our cabin from The Madrones. It was very easy. We arrived to a clean, heated cabin. It is so cozy and comfortable inside, and the outside has a large space for your dog to run around. In fact, our pup absolutely loved it there! They even provided us with a bed, blanket, towel, and water bowl for our dog! Our first night there we were outside and noticed that even with the light pollution, we were able to see so many stars in the sky. It was beautiful. Although not a "hotel," they still give you all the amenities you need! Housekeeping even came when we were out and cleaned up and made our bed. Overall, super convenient location and great accommodations. We'll definitely be back! read more

What a lovely retreat in the middle of Anderson valley! The rooms are thoughtfully appointed and the sheets are some of the softest I've slept on. The front desk, while not 24/7, has very helpful and friendly staff and a well curated store of unique gifts shares the space. Attached is the most elegant dispensary I've ever seen to be quite honest, and just a few steps away is Long Meadow Ranch tasting room - be sure to check out their Pinot Noir! No notes - just smiles. We've stayed here twice now and absolutely love it. Both stays have been during COVID. The owners (Brian and Jim) and the InnKeeper and cleaning staff do such a great job keeping people comfortable and safe. Rooms are rented with time in between for thorough cleaning. Social distancing and mask wearing is enforced and they have great amenities in the rooms and on their property. At the Madrones property, there is also the Wickson (a fabulous restaurant), a gift shop, dispensary, and three tasting rooms (Drew, Smith Story, and Long Meadow). You really don't have to leave, but if you must there are plenty of attractions near by. read more

Playing nightclub volume music until 11 PM at The Brambles, the Madrones property across the creek from a country campground, is inconsistent with the touting the website gives to the natural environment. "This property will submerge you amongst massive Redwoods and provide you with multiple micro-climates conducive to your well being.". All of us in the campground missed the sounds of the bubbling creek and frogs and instead endured a late night encore of drunks singing Sinatra. read more

There is so much to love about this place, but you have to be ready for the quirks. We arrived in the late afternoon and stayed in The Perch, which is the top floor of The Brambles (and appears to be no longer available at the moment). The surroundings are gorgeous - you are in a redwood grove. Our first laugh was getting our giant suitcase up the very steep and narrow spiral staircase. If we had known we would have packed 2 smaller bags! The room was warm and cozy and quite small. The "kitchen" was stocked with the promised snacks and such. What wasn't so funny was the lack of hot water in the morning. It was just lukewarm. There was nothing to be done about it, so we were refunded $50 for the inconvenience. I would have rather had the hot shower! But they were at least apologetic about it. Anyway this isn't the place for someone who wants luxury and pampering. But it is a great place to stay and have a unique experience living in a cabin among the redwoods. In the morning it is simply stunning. And as a bonus you may meet some friendly dogs as it seems to be a popular place for the locals to walk their dogs. read more

I have been hesitant to write a review due to the lashing that it seems a few of the other Yelp-ers have received, but I would not be doing my duty if I did not. We stayed here on our way back from Avenue of the Redwoods. We were arriving and received a text from the front desk that if we were arriving after a certain time than we should let her know so she could prepare ahead of time. We did not arrive late, we arrived a few minutes early and there was no one at the front desk for nearly 15-20 minutes. Apparently she was checking another patron into their unit and had actually walked them to their unit or something, the kicker is as we were being checked in we did not receive that same treatment at all we were hand waved directions to the back and brushed off. The unit itself was beautiful to the eye, but we arrived to a cold unit. We put the heater on and walked the grounds to find something to eat for dinner, (but that is another review - Stone & Embers..) you might want to consider eating before arriving as there aren't a lot of immediate food options and when they run out of food they are out - FYI.... there is not much lighting on the path across the gardens to the back units so be careful and maybe use your mobile light since they don't provide any/maybe they were broken? Also the window for one of the front units is a clear big screen TV (65 inch+) view of a bedroom and the patrons inside were... uhm.. in their birthday suits... did not bother me, but might be startling to more modest people just trying to soak up the grounds and the less primal natural beauty. Being that it is a clear walk area maybe some classy window decals that are fancy and still let the light in, but blur the actual visuals.. on that one window.. just a thought! Our toilet apparently stopped working the moment we got back to our room and there was no response from the front desk all night. So again our experience with the front desk staff was the worst thing about this place. Unfortunately there is not dedicated staff on premises to deal with such things (although you would think this might be one item that there would be an emergency line for)... we had to get up extra early and pack up to shuffle out just so we could get on the road to get to a working bathroom somewhere. As we were walking out the door someone walked up with a plunger and handed it to us to use...and walked away, yup you read that right and walked away... too little too late and not our job as a paying patron of your facility. Trying to make coffee before we headed out to find a restroom but couldn't get the machine to work and the instructions provided were entirely wrong.. sometimes super fancy isn't better, something simple that works is just what is needed and a better experience/product overall. Had the welcome been just as warm for us as it seems to be for other reviewers/the unit that arrived right before us... the toilet been working.. and the room a decent temperature upon our arrival.. as well as knowledge received that we might want to eat before arrival as there is nearly nothing in the immediate vicinity if the on premise place runs out of food.. this would be a great spot to stop into. Breathtaking for all the right reasons, but know what you are walking into - rolling the dice on an overall quality stay. read more

Was looking forward to staying at the Boonville hotel but it was all booked so we decided to try this place. Booking policy's are quite strange. Full payment required 14 before staying. One only would worry if u truly got sick and couldn't make it. We rented the Spare room which was nice but had some quirks. The place is in a need for a deep clean. For $300 a night one would expect flawless accommodations. I emailed the owner my concerns,but no reply. Also the breakfast selections are limited in the fridge which we read about in advance. The towels need to be replaced since they are quite old. The shower had some mold at the bottom. Next time we will stay at the Boonville hotel. read more

An amazing little boutique hotel in beautiful Anderson Valley. Beautiful architecture, a comfortable, welcoming and homey stay with all the right touches. Just the level of customer service and interaction we needed to feel relaxed and disconnected from the fast pace of life. We had a great experience checking in the Cydnee, despite the pouring rain. She gave us a quick tour of the property & independent tasting rooms and restaurant. This followed by a tour of the room and walking us through how everything worked (heat, TV, wifi, coffee, etc.). We had our little pug with us and they left us a dog bed, blanket and water bowl. He loved exploring the smells and sounds of the property. Our stay in The Living Room was fantastic. The room is HUGE and well apportioned. The bed is incredible. Seriously one of our favorite places to stay in the last 12 months, it feels like staying in a room at someone's luxury house! Seeing a few mixed reviews here, so some caveats why Madrones may not be for you: - You need a 5-star branded hotel chain level of interaction and service (this is a boutique hotel in a rural valley). The amenities are 6-star, but they don't have a dedicated staff to wait on the needs of less than 10 rooms. Boutique hotels offer a unique boutique experience (aka all something different) - You need room service (LOL - walk to Stone & Embers on the property, it's outright amazing) - You can't let go of your creature comforts (cellular, wifi, 24/7 water, etc.). This property has all that, but it is also in rural Anderson Valley. Things happen (storms, etc.) and fixing is not instantaneous. Enjoy the beauty of the valley and disconnecting a bit. I am sure the staff will accommodate you somehow - You aren't tolerant of different styles, personalities, people, etc. Why are you traveling then? - You are penny pinching - Hendy Woods camping is literally right up the road and amazingly beautiful. - FYI be mindful of staying here mid-week. Most wineries, restaurants, shops, etc. are closed (except for a few months in late spring/summer). The hotel cannot force the valley to be open, but they can give you a nice place to lay your head :) read more

We stayed at The Back porch at The Brambles. It was a wonderful space, the interior was immaculate, despite comment cards about the property being a work in progress. Theres a nice porch and the property is serene and quiet. The bedding was amazing; light breakfast was a nice touch. We were only here for one night. The unit we were in shared the building with two other units, both of which were occupied during our stay. After a day of wine tasting, all guests were inclined to socialize which really made for a great evening enjoying the outdoor communal space by the river. I would love to see some sort of foot path between the Brambles and Madrones that allows for safe travel between the two. As it stands you have to walk a narrow bridge on the highway. Sounds like this is in the plans, but until then, the Brambles cant ready be considered on The Madrones property. read more

At The Madrones in Philo, you'll pay a premium price for a less than premium experience. It feels as though the guest experience is an afterthought, especially considering the $300 per-night price tag. On our first night the WiFi went down around 10:30 p.m. It was still down when we woke up the next morning. Wifi is essential because cellular reception is spotty in Anderson Valley. I knew no one was at the front desk so I waited until the morning to text the number they provided us. A representative of the inn drove over and rebooted the modem. Our Nespresso coffee maker was confounding, which is a cruel thing to do to a guest in the morning. The printed instructions given were completely wrong. We had to be shown how to work around the machine's idiosyncrasies. So if you stay in The Master and need to use the coffee maker, completely ignore the directions that are provided. Turn the machine on by pressing both buttons on the top about fifteen minutes before you want to brew to give this wretched machine ample time to warm up. To brew, press the flashing button to the right on the top of the unit. Never mind the directions, the buttons never stop flashing. The button to the left which is the best one because it brews a stiffer stronger cup, though blinking, is non-functioning. Then brace yourself for the loudest Nespresso you've ever heard. Like, hairdryer loud. My vacuum sealer is quieter. Stay close to the unit and be prepared to hit the flashing button to the right again, or your coffee will overflow--every time. Overflowing coffee has a startling effect that is similar to a caffeine bump. To the establishment's credit, they leave six pods. When we came back to our room on the second evening, housekeeping had taken the small cake of soap from our bathroom and did not replace it. You get no toiletries here. Rather, there are self-serve dispensers inside the shower. Eventually, I noticed a soap pump in the kitchenette bar area so I brought it into the bathroom. Come on. This is not the premium getaway experience I paid to have. Then there's the sound of laundry spinning, churning and wobbling in the housekeeping room right next door at 9:20 a.m. So much for peace and quiet in the morning. Pros: The Master is a spacious unit with a daybed. The king sized bed in The Master was comfortable and linens were top notch. Pillows were great--large, soft and lofty. The throw pillows need attention though--split zipper on one, bleach marks on another. Smartly appointed (minus the Nespresso) kitchenette-like bar thoughtfully stocked with banana bread, yogurt, cereal, milk, cream, juice, tea and coffee pods are left for you to enjoy in your room. That was a nice touch. Bottle of locally made sparkling wine waiting on arrival. Spacious balcony overlooking a koi pond and gardens. With drawn curtains and closed blinds the room stays fairly dark, which is great for late sleepers. Decent water pressure and a shower big enough for two. The tap water tastes a lot better than the tap water from Napa or any town in Southern California. If you're bothered by faint flavors that bring to mind minerals and moss, there's a Britta water filter pitcher in the fridge. I didn't need to use it. Straight from the tap was fine. Good heater. Plenty of closet space. Tastefully decorated. High ceilings and large tall doors. Clean--not impeccable but good enough. Cons: Poor cost-to-value ratio considering the location, level of service, and organizational missteps. "Low touch residential guest quarters" means you're pretty much on your own here. On-screen it sounds fine, unobtrusive, but in practice, with so many failings, it doesn't work well to not have an inn-keeper on site. Your mileage may vary. Low flow toilets require multiple flushes for normal use and basic "loads" with minimal paper. It defeats the ecological purpose. There is some road noise. It's not terrible, but it's there. If you live in a quiet rural or residential area, you will notice it. It dies down significantly at night. No bathtub. No interior safety lock on the door. So anyone with a key can come in at any time. No one came in, but still, I don't like that feeling--being a late sleeper I've had my share of housekeeping barging in and waking me up. Bath towels, though good quality, are too small. At this level of accommodations, I expected bath sheets. Parking is not clearly delineated, making it a free-for-all for thoughtless drivers of luxury SUVs. Checkout is at 11:00--early. Noon would be more humane. Would I recommend or stay here again? No. Not for what The Madrones charges. This was a disappointing stay. I was glad to get home. read more

Can't say enough about this gem in Anderson Valley! We escaped for our anniversary and couldn't have had a better time. The bed is so comfortable, the room was very clean and quiet. The grounds are beautiful and we went before everything has reopened due to covid but still found lots to do from swimming in the river to getting an amazing selection of wines from the grocery store in Boonville to taste on our porch. We spent two very comfy nights in Estate room 1. The grounds are beautiful and the linens and soaps were very luxurious. The hosts were reachable. and helped us out with every little concern we had. If you would like more outdoor flow, I recommend staying in another room or cottage, as this room does not have any options for opening windows or doors to an outside area, although the big picture window in the bedroom with grapevines growing outside it is really lovely. Its a perfect spot in the middle of the valley, everything accessible easily from here. We had everything we needed in the room, especially the well stocked kitchenette. read more

My family stayed at the Madrones for 3 nights over a long weekend and had a fabulous time. The property itself is beautiful and tranquil. We booked the Garden View room and it was very quiet and peaceful with a great view over the private garden. The garden served as our private retreat and my son and I spent an hour each evening walking around the garden exploring. The onsite tasting rooms are a superb treat. I have been a long-time customer of Drew and I found some great new wines at Signal Ridge and Knez. Bink was closed for expansion of the tasting room during the weekend of our stay. Balo, Goldeneye and others are very close to the Madrones property. Balo has a great bocce court across the street. Stone and Embers serves wood-fired pizza on-site. It is well worth planning a lunch or dinner here. The location is central for exploration of Anderson Valley and Mendocino county. We spent a day around Mendocino that was highlighted by visiting lighthouses. The 1 hour drive to Mendocino is a beautiful drive through a coastal redwood forest. The Madrones will now be my recommendation for friends and family visiting the Anderson Valley. read more

From the lovely manicured gardens to the peaceful pond, the grounds of this inn are simply magical. It's a Spanish-style hacienda-like entrance with several tasting rooms right on the grounds. The owner Jim went out of his way to show us around and make sure we felt like we were at home. Our room was in the former kitchen of the home and impeccably clean and complete with a doggy bed for our pups and freshly baked banana bread and Martinelli's apple juice in the fridge. We'll definitely be staying again and recommending to all our friends. What a gem for the Anderson Valley. read more
