The atmosphere is clean and comfortable. Visited recently to freshen up my highlights. First thing done to my hair was a very rough wash with a clarifying shampoo. Then my hair was quickly dried . By that point it was looked absolutely fried. I don't doubt that the staff has great skills, but I don't appreciate when a hairdresser doesn't listen to what the client actually wants, and does what they think is best. Ann Marie is a friendly, warm person, but talks A LOT while working on hair. I can't help but think this distracts her. A friend of mine has been going here for years. I thought she was pleased with the service but after having recently moved out of state she told me "She always seemed to do what she wanted, instead of what I wanted." Enough said. read more

Deanna was absolutely amazing! I went in with matted hair from an accident. Thinking I needed to shave it off, she brushed it out within 15 or 20 minutes! Remarkable!! Gave me an amazing cut that I'm able to brush on my own. Going back in two weeks for color. Love the fact that the Loft accepts credit cards & cash for a tip. Makes a world of difference! Finally found the BEST hairdresser and hair salon! Don't waste your money anywhere else! The Loft is reasonably priced and has the best and most educated hairdressers!! Go!! read more

I came here for my first dye job -- I wanted a purple ombre. The salon is clean and funky. Everyone I interacted with from the owner to the newest temp was very sweet.. They offer you coffee, water, cookies, they take your coat. My appointment needed to be rescheduled because of the blizzard (2 ft of snow!) However based on my schedule and the length of my appt the only day that worked was Saturdays. Rather than having me wait another 2-3 weeks to be seen, my girl Christina was very accommodating and took me the night before the storm, staying until almost 11pm to color my hair. Christina did an amazing job. She explained everything she was doing and was fun to hang out with all night. I love my hair. It fades nicely from my natural medium brown to an electric "galaxy" purple. Everyone is impressed by the tone of the color, especially on my darker hair. The price was right where I expected; I had to be lightened then dyed and it was just about $200. I had no problems with my service. Only downside is that the salon may have challenging hours especially if you are a commuter like me, but again they were very accommodating. Great place! read more

I recently had an event to go to and had a total hair emergency, but the ladies at the Loft Salon were so great. They were not only able to fit me into an appointment the very next day (probably could have done same day, too, if I really needed to, but I needed a next day appointment), but also at a time that worked for me. The time they put me at ended up being half an hour before they closed and my appointment ran way over the 30 minutes, but despite it being a longer than planned appointment, they didn't rush their work or make me feel like the last appointment. I brought in a picture so that they could see what I wanted to have done and they nailed it. They also listened to my concerns about my hair and took it all into consideration when styling it. They asked questions about my preferences and made it perfect. Definitely would recommend these ladies! read more

I started going to The Loft over a year ago. I was thrilled. Kristina went out of her way to make me feel comfortable. I went back several times. I even had color for the first time. And I wrote a raving review. All was well until a few weeks ago when I left a request to schedule hair cut and color for this Friday. When Kristina phoned me back late on a Saturday, I was on the street in Jersey City with my daughter and it was very noisy and I should not have answered the phone. Initially I couldn't hear anything and I didn't know who was on the other end of the phone. After a few seconds struggling to hear, I said I couldn't hear and would call them back. With that I hung up. I left another request for an appointment. Days later but no one phoned me. I called and spoke to Anne Marie who told me that they had no appointments for this week or next. It didn't ring true and I asked Anne Marie if they didn't want my business and even reminded her I just sent three people to the salon. She said "Well, you hung up on Kristina". I explained what happened and I apologized for my unintended offense. The day after I spoke with Anne Marie, I left a voicemail apologizing again and saying that I would never want to offend Kristina or anyone and apologized for what was clearly an unintended slight. I have heard nothing. Strange way to run a business and in this age of cell phone calls being dropped, to have jumped to some large conclusion without first knowing what happened is odd. Love this place! Just got back home from my first (and definitely not last) visit to this salon. I had been going to the same salon for years and years. When my regular stylist left I tried a few other stylists, at the same salon, and was just not happy. After letting my hair grow for a few months I finally decided to try a new place. After researching I decided on The Loft - so glad I did. Christina is amazing! She really listened to what I like and didn't like with my hair. When she started cutting my hair I relaxed knowing the results would be great - you can tell she knows what she's doing and really cuts with precision. She cuts it to not only make it look great but I just love the way my hair moves now. I think I actually look younger now too. :-) The space is filled with natural light. All the staff seem to really get along well and the owner is very welcoming and pleasant. I even got a small bag of samples when I left - who doesn't like free samples? The price was very reasonable - my hair looks like I paid twice as much. The only thing I'm not happy about is that I didn't start coming her years ago! read more

I came here after getting a horrendous haircut somewhere else, and they were so incredibly nice. I initially only wanted a consultation, which I got on the spot. That was impressive, and based off that conversation I booked an appointment to go back later in the week to get it cut. Kristin did a wonderful job, and I left feeling and looking ten times better than when I went in. I have been back twice since and have been very pleased. Only thing to note is that there is quite a steep staircase to get in. I haven't seen an elevator so if you have bad knees, hips, etc this may not be the best choice. read more

This is my salon of choice from now on, forever! Id been looking to go a really intense shade of red, and I had tried a couple salons in the area but got wishy-washy results. I then tried Loft and got exactly what I wanted and it was soooo amazing! Ive been going for several months now and my hair always comes out flawless and bright. The stylist I had was nice, and the cut was okay. However, I think it's imperative you listen to your customers. When your client mentions that she does not add heat to her hair, don't burn her scalp. The cherry on top was that she would leave frequently because she was dyeing someone else's hair at the same time. It's not my worse experience at a salon, but I won't be going back. read more

Ann Marie has been my stylist for about 17 years and I'm not exaggerating when I say she is the absolute best. Her passion and expertise continues to grow and evolve. My hair has always looked perfect after her cuts and colors. This is a great salon. I moved to the area four years ago and had poor luck with finding a good stylist. The Loft was right on time with the appointment, offered coffee/tea and free wifi and my new stylist did a complimentary deep cleansing/hydration treatment on my poor, damaged hair. She used some excellent products--I told her I was looking for something my baby-fine hair could handle. They were magical, but awfully overpriced. I expected the cut itself to be much more expensive. Everywhere I called quoted $65-$80 for women's cuts, but The Loft charges a very reasonable $45 for their less experienced artist (very recommendable) and a bit more--$50 and up for their more experienced personnel. I made my next appointment before I left (which I've rarely done at salons past) and tipped 30%. Worth every penny. AND if you take a card at the desk, write your name on it and get a friend to go there with that card, you get $10 off your next cut. Great idea. Only downside: I love Highland Park, but I recommend not scheduling cuts at rush hour, as Raritan Avenue is a horrible place to be at that time. read more

Only great things to say about The Loft Salon. I was looking for a salon closer to home, and I took a chance on Loft. Christina cut my hair, and did a great job giving me long, soft layers. The blowout she did at the end of the appointment was amazing--I got so many compliments on my hair the next few days! I was searching for a hairdresser that would be my regular go to because I moved into Middlesex county 2 years ago. The staff at The Loft Salon are all very friendly, but if you have a very short hairstyle like me (I like pixie haircut) you should go somewhere else. All the 5 stars reviews might have come from women with long hairstyle. I gave Christina 3 chances and every time I always brought my computer to show her on a big screen the style I wanted and each time there was nothing significant than the last, just a reminder. The first time she cut my hair, I was satisfied. Second time, a few places had to be corrected. Third time, she really messed up. I didn't want her to correct the cut anymore, because there was barely anything left to cut. Christina is incompetent in cutting short hairstyle. Her judgement on length and evenness is uncertain and off. I came home with left side of my hair thinner than the right. The back of the head has bumpy lines because the thickness suddenly drops, instead of gradually. I really didn't make an argument there at the salon, because it's a short hairstyle, and she chopped too much everything already. I still paid 20% tip. She tried, but she's just not skillful enough. LOVE this place! There are only 3 stylists here, including the owner, so it's small and cozy. Not like other crazy big salons where you have a bunch of stylists yelling to each other from across the room. I believe I had Kristen - she listened to what I was aiming for and she did a fantastic job! I'm always scared to get my hair trimmed - I've had enough people look at my pictures, then decide to do whatever they want. Not here! Since it was my first time here, the owner introduced herself to me - very warm and approachable. It's pricier than your basic Supercuts, but it's worth it. Everyone is very professional, it's decorated beautifully, great location in Highland Park - there's even off-street parking! I will definitely be back! read more

I love this salon! Kristina does an excellent job. The first time I went, I had gone to a different salon that didn't give me the color I wanted. I told Kristina what happened and how I wanted it to look. She was very attentive and gave good suggestions. She fixed up my roots and overall color and I was happy with how it turned out. I came here to get a trim and redo my layers, and I'm very happy with my haircut! When I got there they took my coat and purse, and immediately made me feel welcomed. The atmosphere was friendly and I enjoyed the snacks that were in the waiting room, and I also liked the music that was playing. It was a very well-furnished and beautiful place. The staff was very kind to me, and the lady who did my hair made me feel comfortable and relaxed. She did take a long time to cut my hair, but it was worth it because it looks amazing! There is a clear difference between a person that knows how to style and cut. I went in to this salon thinking I was going to get a great cut. But instead I got a decent blow out, and a horrible cut. My hair is so uneven and I can't even wear it down because its obvious how badly cut it is. Christina was a sweet person and the staff service was great, but the cut is horrible! I should have realized even by the technique she used for cutting my hair (ALL OVER THE PLACE) that it wasn't going to come out good. Super upset! And I don't recommend getting a hair cut here!! Honestly they should stick to just blow out's because the pictures on this site deceived me! read more

I love this place. I've been there twice now and they give exceptional service. I was the last customer of the day and didn't feel like my stylist, Kristina, was in any rush.
