I used to really like Muse, but my most recent experience at Muse left a lot to be desired. I went for a partial balayage touch up after having grown out my hair without any glazing or maintenance for the past 6 months. The balayage had grown in beautifully and I had no complaints other than wanting to redo the roots and darken the color since it lightened up over time. Chelsea had done such an excellent job before, and I was excited to book my touch up with her. Everything was fine until Chelsea blew out my hair and it came out way too light-lighter than the color I had come in with. She drastically overlightened my hair and had to glaze me twice-something I don't think either of us were expecting. After the second glaze the final color was improved but still seemed to miss the mark of what I hoped to achieve. In any case, a week goes by and I notice that my hair lightened up several shades with brassy undertones after only 2 washes with a color safe shampoo. I was confused considering I just had it darkened. When I called to express that I was unhappy with the color, the manager quickly got in contact with me and offered to fit me in the same day to correct it. When I came into the salon, Chelsea had already mixed the colored glaze before seeing my hair or discussing it with me. She didn't ask me what my concerns were and immediately had someone else apply the glaze to my hair. After Chelsea glazed me again, the color was improved but inexplicably light/blond in certain areas. She applied a bit more of the glaze to some of the lighter portions which helped improve the color a bit more. When I asked if she could dry me with a curl instead of drying straight she very tersely told me "I don't have time and this is free so..." as if I hadn't paid ~$300 10days prior for a coloring service that failed to meet my goals. She also didn't finish drying my hair and only dried the front sending me out with damp hair in the back of my head. I left the salon upset about how much time and money was wasted on a frustrating experience with mixed results. This experience has turned me off to this salon. I've been going to Muse for about a year or so now. I never had a bad thing to say about this salon or its employees. It's super clean inside and my stylist Chelsea never fails me. Super professional, very informative with the whole process, and let's not forget the results speak for themselves. After going to so many other salons and having bad experiences, Muse Salon is literally the only place I will go to now. Their prices are extremely reasonable for the services i get done. Muse has a trendy, modern ambiance, convenient location (with private parking, an absolute win for the busy street it is located on!), and the staff is exceptional! Everyone that works here is both friendly and talented. It is always a pleasure to call and schedule an appointment - the staff also cares about you, so if you tell them you really need to get in with your artist, they will do their best to squeeze you in. I made the transfer to Muse from a salon in Metuchen, following my super talented hair stylist/artist, Chelsea, about a year ago. Unfortunately, Chelsea was out of the business and I desperately needed to get in because I had an interview and was way overdue. The owner did my hair herself, and made me feel completely comfortable and chatted with me like Chelsea would have. I felt valued by her, just like I do when I am with Chelsea. I have been getting my hair done for probably 15 years and have been to salons all over NJ, and I know that it is rare to find a place where the staff always makes you feel valued and like you're a friend, as well as a client. Now that I have told you that much, I just wanted to say that Chelsea is hands down the most talented hairdresser I have ever met. She brings your fantasy to life and makes it look so easy. During my first visit to her, she lightened my hair and made it a beautiful rose gold. I would LOVE to have her do nothing but fantasy color, as her work is truly gorgeous; however, I've had to keep my hair less adventurous since my first visit. Since then, Chelsea has been wonderful at helping me achieve my dream icy blonde from my natural medium-to-dark brown hair that always pulls gold. She is patient and wonderful. She listens to what I am trying to achieve in that visit and offers suggestions to help make my dreams a reality. She is an expert in her trade and a pleasure to sit with. If you are looking for something trendy, fun and exciting - Chelsea is the only artist you need! If you are looking for something more traditional, she's amazing at that as well! The attached pictures show Chelsea's beautiful rose gold. I waited WAY TOO LONG before going back for a touch up or hair cut, but the owner was able to blend my long dark roots beautifully while keeping my hair on the lighter side when I finally made it back. I needed my hair to be a more natural looking color but did not want it dark and she found the perfect solution: a natural-looking darker blonde that would allow my roots to blend if needed. Unfortunately, I don't have a picture from the first day it was done and styled but this was taken 2-3 weeks after. Shortly after that, I wanted my hair LIGHT. Chelsea was able to lighten me quite a bit to a beautiful, neutral buttery-but-almost-icy blonde AND let me keep the length while still making it look healthy. Today, after waiting about two months longer than I should have because life happens, Chelsea was able to almost get my to my goal of icy blonde, as seen in the last picture - it's not the best shot and I will try to get a better one to show off her work! She is passionate, dedicated, incredibly talented and has a wonderful personality - it is always a pleasure to spend time in her chair!! read more

I went for a balayage and haircut. The color turned out great but the haircut was just not good. I went back so the stylist could fix it because the back was cut unevenly, which I didn't notice until I got home and could examine my hair more. She did fix it for no extra charge, but if I'm paying $60+ for a haircut and $300+ for total service I expect my hair to be done right the first time. Even after the cut was fixed it didn't look worthy of the hefty price I paid. read more

I have been going to Muse for a few years now and have been really happy with my experience. Kristen is a great stylist. She listens, takes her time and works with me to cut my hair to my expectations and beyond. I have curly hair and she has shaped and layered it so that it is easy and looks great every day. She has also done highlights in my hair and they always look natural and well placed. The salon is clean and peaceful. The decor and environment are serene and comfortable and I never feel crowded or rushed. Kristen manages her schedule carefully to ensure each client gets individual attention. I cannot even begin to express how excited and happy that I was once I took a look at Kristin's creation. The belliage, low lights and depth she added to my hair was amazing. I just wanted to scream out with joy. Us mothers rarely get our hair coloured so she made me feel and look like a supermodel. I certainly owned Raritan Ave as I strutted my stuff :) I showed her photos and we exchanged ideas. Kristin's consult was very professional and honest which is what a customer wants. this new(ish) salon is owned by Kristen and Kaylan, who i've loved since they worked at the Loft Salon down the street. they always see you on time, and give great cuts. the atmosphere is fun and relaxed and positive. i always love the cuts i get from kristin, and usually notice other clients leaving there looking great, big smiles. big plus: it has its own parking lot. read more

First time at this new salon and it was a great experience! Kaylan and Kristin were warm and friendly from the moment I walked in. They greeted me, offered something to drink and made my time in the salon fun! I liked the open layout, clean feel and relaxing music in the background.
