Ren's Pets

I was leaving the Starbucks when I spotted this pet store across the way. I haven't heard of Ren's…read morebefore. It was a decent sized store when I walked in. Immediately I noticed that it is dog-friendly with a few small dogs. I was drawn to the huge freezer along the left wall at the entrance of the store. They have a lot of fresh meals prepared for pooches there. There were raw packaged meals, fully-cooked frozen meals, bone broths, frozen eggs, and lightly processed meats. There is a brand called Tom & Sawyer that has really fancy meals made from human-edible ingredients. I picked up a couple packages - one that is kangaroo meat and the other that is a rosemary venison. I also saw flavours that were seafood based and a coconut chicken! They are a little bit pricey though at $10-12 a package. Per the portion size instructions, a 30 pound dog would need 1.25 packages a day! The staff there were pretty nice. The top shelf of the freezer too tall for little ol' me so I had to ask someone for help. They were happy to oblige and then helped me check out as well. I was asked about whether I wanted to sign up for their newsletter and was told I would receive a coupon via email sometime later. I'm hoping I star to see more of these stores around the city.

Her attitude was shockingly rude and unprofessional, showing an utter lack of experience or understanding when it comes to dealing with pet owners. As someone who's managed a pet store myself, I can say with confidence I would've fired her on the spot for speaking to a customer that way. Upon reading other reviews, it's clear this isn't an isolated incident but a recurring issue. I won't be returning as long as she's employed there.

I took a jaunt over to the upscale, some might even say snooty, neighborhood of Yorkville to find the precious (but not overly so) little dog boutique called Prettie Yiji. The personable and knowledge-filled shopkeeper carries everything from pet cages to doggy diapers and some lavish leashes to boot. The store also has a variety of healthy, organic choices in the dog food department that don't seem, in my 13 year history of frequenting these joints, too pricey especially for the area. I came home to Alfie with today's Yiji sampling - a bag of greenies, some organic chicken jerky, and a rubber rooster. Unfortunately, all he needed were the doggy diapers.

This is like Whole Foods for pets. The staff at this location were helpful and not only knowledgable about their products but kitten care as well. When I discovered some of the canned food brands cost more than I was looking to spend, a staff member helped me locate a value-savvy alternative. Ultimately, I opted for Merrick, a brand committed to locally sourced, minimally processed food for cats and dogs (my experience with Merrick thus far has been extremely positive, as the kittens are happy, healthy and growing every day). I selected a variety of flavours; when one in particular left the kittens with an upset stomach, Global Pet Foods gladly accommodated an exchange. My family members have had an equally positive experience with this location, particularly our dog, who was warmly greeted with treats. The store itself is clean and well-lit, with an impressive selection of health-conscious pet foods, although I do wish they had a broader range of cat toys as well. Also, I would be thrilled if Global Pet Foods followed in the footsteps of Petsmart and Pet Valu by partnering with an animal rescue organization and showcasing foster animals to help facilitate their adoption. I know it's a tall order, but that would truly put Global Pet Foods in a league of its own. The only other change I would make is having a delivery service (another tall order), since carting all that kitty litter home without a car can be difficult! Overall, an excellent spot to shop for your furry kidlets.

The sales associates have been more than friendly, and remember my dog's name (Winston). Most of all, they go above and beyond when I'm looking for a particular product or brand. Recently I needed to get my dog some more food because he had eaten the last of it the day before (big mistake on my part), and I went to Pet Valu but they had sold out. The sales associate let me know when the next shipment was coming in and then found sales packages of the same food and at no cost provided those to me. I put 100% trust in that location of Pet Valu and their dedication to animals!

I looked around the store couldn't find a product I often buy there, though I noticed the brands had been moved around. I searched the aisles for about 5 minutes more minutes. One of the younger staff did apologize that the aisle was unpassable. Seemed like a nice kid. But none of them greeted or offered assistance. Headed out to Global Foods, where the selection is better and the staff are attentive and helpful. It would worry me if the franchise was mine. As I left the staff/manager finished up his conversation with someone who obviously wasn't shopping. With the world going to delivery, I would invest in better customer service habits.
