Anglesey is not the most gastronomic of places, so when we stumbled across the Oyster Catcher we were pleasantly surprised. The massive, modern building loomed out of the sea mist and immediately we decided to pull over and investigate. The building itself was designed Haf Haus, a German company famed for its large, glass-fronted, environmentally friendly buildings. It really stands out, particularly on an island which still boasts mainly 60's architecture! The building itself boasts a bar, cafe and restaurant so we decided to stop for lunch. The Oyster Catcher is the brainchild of the Timpson Family, more famous for shoe repairs than fine dining! However, they decided to set up the OC as a chefs academy to help young unemployed people on the island, the idea originally stemming from a visit to Jamie Oliver's Fifteen restaurant in London. With this kind of motivation behind the project and a fantastic building to boot, I was really excited about our lunch here. The menu was large and varied, and many of the dishes were designed and cooked by the cadets. Some of the servers were a little shy but there was obviously some more experienced staff to keep the cadets in check. We started with some focaccia bread and a glass of wine each and all was looking good. However, the mains were a bit of a let down. I went for the mackerel with parsley mash and tomato and mussel casserole. It was fairly tasty but not massive in size. My partner went for one of the specials, the plaice with new potatoes. When it arrived it came as a giant bowl of spuds and a tiny fish. A bit bemused, my boyf went ahead and ate the first side (it took three mouthfuls) but when he turned the fish over there was nothing on the other side! A £13 main dish gone in three bites?? - this can't be right! When the waitress came to clear our plates we mentioned that the fish was very small and on top of this, something had obviously gone wrong in the cooking as one side was missing completely and someone had obviously tried to cover this up by serving it the other way up! We were very polite about our complaint, wanting to feedback to the trainee chefs more than anything. The waitress said she would feedback to the kitchen and the mistake would be rectified in the bill. We didn't get a response, which to be honest I was expecting, and when we finally got someones attention for the bill, we found that 10% had been knocked off his dish alone. A gesture I guess, but not really an appropriate one. I don't often complain in restaurants, and when I do I'm not necessarily expecting this to be reflected in the bill, but some feedback and explanation from the kitchen would have been appreciated. We left feeling a little disappointed as I had really wanted to love this place. I would certainly give it another chance, and urge other people to do the same as what they are trying to achieve here is fantastic, but at the same time, they need to provide better food and service if they want to sustain this project over the long term.

We only booked a few hours in advance of our reservation but as the owner is Vegan herself they were not fazed in the slightest by our dietary requirements and we were given a number of options for each course when we arrived. Starters: We had the tomato tart and soup. Both were lovely and there was a choice of two Vegan soups which came with bread and dairy free spread. Main Course: We had the Thai vegetable green curry with a dhaal side and the pancake. The curry itself and the side of dhaal were great. Both really flavoursome and tasty. The pancake was fantastic and was served as a burrito with mushrooms, spinach, couscous and other delights inside. I had it with rice but you can have chips or rosemary & lemon potatoes instead. Dessert: Not that we had much room for dessert after the excellent starter and main course! We all had the chocolate cake was absolutely wonderful! Moist with lots of tasty chocolate icing on top. Apparently it's always Vegan too. They gave us the option of either whipped soya cream (which we chose) or sorbet to accompany it. There were also lots of Vegan wines marked clearly on the menu. Fresh, smooth and creamy oysters. The crab meat was lovely sweet, full of flavours. With the shrimp we made some tasty seafood dip. Really a nice place to grab some fresh and tasty seafood. They're tiny pots of unseasoned boiled and chilled seafood from about 2.5-4£ a pot depending on whether it's prawns, mussels, cockles, whelks, crayfish, etc. Perfectly size for sampling if you can't commit or want to sample them all. There are condiments available for you to season after, but I prefer to eat them as-is, since plain boiled fresh seafood is already have their own briny flavor. Provided are forks, toothpicks, salt, pepper, mayo, Marie Rose sauce (ketchup mayo).

Dylan's is in a beautiful location directly on the water, and the atmosphere is elegant but relaxed. There's lots of inexpensive public parking at the nearby beach, so there's no need to worry about finding a place to park. The first night, I ordered the crispy sea bass tacos, and the quality of the sea bass was sensational. The next night, I had the herb and parmesan crusted hake fillet, which if anything was even more delicious. The hake was possibly the best fish I've ever eaten, and the creamy mustard leeks were spectacular. After a lot of heavy pub food while traveling in Wales, the light and refined food at Dylan's was a welcome change. The only thing that I didn't like quite as much was the dessert: I ordered the cinnamon churros, and while they were by no means bad, they just didn't wow me the way the rest of the meal had. Our servers both evening were friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. I also appreciated that Dylan's is open until 11:00 p.m., as many of the restaurants we ate at in Wales closed considerably earlier. If you're in Criccieth, I'd certainly recommend Dylan's!

For a main course, I went with another special, a seafood medley. It included wonderful fish, manx scallops (also perfectly cooked) and tempura lobster. The lobster was my favorite, as you could still get the full flavor of the lobster and the tempura added to it rather than just make it feel like it came from a chip shop. Very hard to do classy, AAA, fried food but they pulled it off. The wine list also a big plus, nice selection at quite reasonable prices. Service was stellar, very good pacing between courses and professional without being stuffy. Again, one of my favorite dining experiences on the island (and would be very good almost anywhere).
