The Lion is a nicely restored 15th-century coaching inn Winchcombe, which we stayed after a days walk from Lower Slaughter, including a stop at Sudeley Castle. It took a little bit of effort to find it as its a few blocks up North Street. Like a number of UK inns, the Lion consists of a bar, a restaurant, and a hotel. It's also not an independent inn as it's part of the Butcome group. The folks here work hard as we same the same folks a breakfast, dinner, and in-between. It's popular as the Sunday bar and restaurant crowd on this bank Holiday weekend was impressive. Here are my ratings: Bar (3 Stars) - Nice selection, but with slightly snippy service. When I asked what they had beer wise that was around Guiness strength, the answer was "Coffee". Then it too awhile to get her attention again. Maybe I missed the joke. Patio (4 Stars) - This was a nice outdoor spot to comfortably hang out, especially since the weather was relatively warm and it wasn't raining. Dinner (4 Stars) - We dined "early" as they were wrapping up the dining room hours because of the bank holiday. And as we were already in a "Burger and a Pint" mood, our choices were the right choice and quite tasty. Breakfast (5 Stars). Good selection, nice dining room, timely service, strong coffee, good portions, and tasty choices. You can't do much better than that. Accommodation (5 Stars). We snagged the "Super Indulgent" room which with the associated bath tub (great soak after a hike) made Gayle feel like a princess. I loved this room too. read more

I'm disappointed in some of the poor reviews below. Lion Inn had very friendly and attentive service by a group of amiable hardworking young people. It was a good atmosphere here and we were in a convivial setting which we enjoyed. The food was good (I enjoyed the steak), and I wish there were a few more gluten-free options, but it was an overall fine experience and certainly wasn't the nightmare described by some of the overly demanding people who've reviewed previously. 5 stars for the service and ambience, and even if the food was 3-4, these fine folks deserve their average rating to go up a bit! read more

Extremely long wait at bar, understaffed, very slow service, all open tables full of empty glasses and food debris, and we were refused food service around 5:45pm because our table had been booked for 7pm, which is obviously stupid. Terrible service, filthy tables, overall detestable ... but the building itself is quite nice. read more

The hotel and the food were fantastic! We stayed in a room that was beautiful and also very spacious and clean. The people who worked at the hotel were so helpful and courteous. And the breakfast was delicious! read more

Too bad, nice place aesthetic-wise. Wouldn't serve us food even with many tables open because there were bookings over an hour from when we got there. We sat down with everything around us open and got refused food service. read more

Beautiful old building with a big fireplace inside and wonderful space outside in the back with picnic tables and flowers. Great ambiance overall. If you stay over night, it is loud, though. Even through our bed was comfortable, we did not sleep well. Also, the internet was spotty. Great breakfast, though and the rooms are cute. read more

Barely rates 3 stars for marginally acceptable food, disjointed service and 2 star level for value / price. Here in Winchcombe we ate at the Wesley house last night. That was a 5 star all round meal and experience for 71 quid. Here at the Lion tonight we had nothing better than regular pub food and the tariff came to 101 British pounds. So the Lion loses plenty of luster in comparison to the Wesley. So what's wrong here? Amateurish, novice service. Appetizers brought to the table without plates. The inexperienced waitress disappears for 10 minutes before bringing the plates. Wine that was first ordered upon sitting down at table took 15 minutes to arrive. This timing problem continued the rest of the meal. Food: my burger was ordinary at best. Not luscious. Milk bread bun was almost stale. The thick cut chips were creamy. Some had crispy exteriors, some were soggy. My wife liked the cod fillet with vegetables. We spied the other diners around the room. It appeared that the giant slab of fried haddock & chips was the correct meal to order. Dessert thin pineapple slices slightly roasted with a side of coconut pudding was fine enough. The flavor nor preparation didn't send my spirit to Hawaii, but the islands are on the other side of the planet. I'm sure that the cook here has no frame of reference. So, I'd never eat here again. If you are in Winchcombe I can sincerely recommend to you having a meal at the Wesley house or the Plaisterer's arms. read more

This un-pretentious establishment is a fine-dining restaurant attached to a local pub with five rooms to rent upstairs. We started with a ham hock terrine and warm goat cheese on a bed of chicory and endive. Main courses included a deconstructed cassoulet with chorizo substituting for the traditional Bavarian sausage; the thigh and drumstick duck confit was substantial and flavorful. The fish pie came piping hot and was chick full of salmon and haddock smothered by a mash potato and cheese lid. The side salads were spring-fresh with pea pod sprouts, mandolined radish, chicory , endive, and sweet cherry tomatoes with a horse-radish-accented dressing. In my opinion the stars were the ham hock terrine and the fish pie, but a five-star meal overall. read more

Ah, very sad that we did not have the best of lunches. The garden is lovely to sit in for a drink but the fish and chips were super greasy and very little fish. Chips were good. Eton Mess was overpriced for something that did not resemble Eton Mess at all. Sad to say we will not be back. read more

Cute pub with seating in and out in the courtyard. The food is pretty standard pub fare, not excellent but ok. Service was a little slow because of the number of people. There was an incident when we were there that a lady's dog attacked the waiter. Even with a tear in his pants, she didn't have to leave and take the dog with her. So maybe be wary of dogs at this pub. read more

Stayed here during our two night stay in the Cotswold area and thought our room was perfect and so cozy! On top of that, the restaurant and bar area is welcoming and the perfect spot to wind down after doing a long walk. We had dinner there both nights-- between the two of us, we had the burger, beef cheeks, cod and celeriac soup and all were delicious and a perfect portion. I think the prices are fair. Also, we had breakfast included with our room package and enjoyed the continental and hot breakfast. My husband tried the smoked trout Benedict dish and did say the hollandaise sauce was a bit vinegary and he was not a huge fan of the dish but it might just be preference. We both tried the full English with some modifications-- delicious but was definitely more food than we could eat so probably should have downsized even more. Customer service was great! Would recommend staying here, relaxing with a beer by the fire and enjoying a few meals in the restaurant. read more

We dropped in without reso. We had to eat in the rear garden area which is beautiful. Service was very good with attentive waiters. The food was modern and tasty. Good beer and wine selection. Prices were moderate. read more
