The Lygon Arms - What a beautiful room!

The website says GRILL by James Martin. ‍ We were seated no problem without a reservation in our hiking clothes. Ambiance and service great. Elegant but casual. Solid meal and cocktails. Total cost was £114 pp but that was for cocktails, starters, wine, mains and dessert. Would definitely return and recommend.

Just sitting in the restaurant makes you sense the history and grandeur around you. Unlike some of the places around it is NOT snooty and stuck up. The service is great, polite, prompt, caring but also down to Earth. The whole ambience is very special and worth visiting just for that! The walls and carvings, the paintings, the huge open hearth burning away in the winter (like during our recent visits). The offerings range from steaks and burgers to fish and chips, lamb shanks and vegetarian offerings and more. We enjoyed the whole experience of eating here several times (pics posted of some of our eats). The food is reliably a solid GOOD whatever you choose. However I do find it a little bit pricey when you keep in mind that it is a la carte. Do we recommend? Absolutely - even though I would suggest that you are in fact a bit of a premium for where you are eating (GBP 20 for breakfast seemed steep to me) and the whole experience. Will we go again? Of course!! Review #91 2019

Arrived but they had no record of the booking. They easily accommodated us but made it feel like it was our fault (even though they said it happens regularly and we should have called to confirm, ironic given it does not say this on the website). Waitress seemed a little snooty at first, though not sure what we did wrong. Anyway another waitress who was quite pleasant took our order. Started with some good bread served with oil and vinegar. As a starter, could not decide between charcuterie and rock oysters so ordered two oyster and duck roulette. The oysters were good with an interested dip though a little gritty but the duck was awesome. One of the finest starters I have ever had. I heaping plate of tender and flavorful duck. For a main, I had the ox cheek bourguignon. Initially had regretted offering it as there were some great option on the menu but when I had my first bite I was won over. It was fantastic. A huge piece of meat, tender, served with mashed potatoes and green beans. The bourguigon sauce was incredible, rich and delicious, prompting me to eat every bite of mashed potato (I'm normally not a potato guy). For dessert, I had baked alaska. Other than my wife's comments that I had returned to the 1970s, it was a very good rendition. All the other desserts, especially the lemon tart, looked fantastic. The only issue is the lemon did arrive with a fingerprint on it, though the once snooty waitress did quickly replace it. Overall, a wonderful meal.

This was not ideal for our group celebration. The individual who appeared to be in charge was very curt about the seating. There is a 40BPS minimum per person stated on the bottom of the menu. That's an easy amount to reach, however they also limit what you can order! Many of the lighter starters and sides sounded appealing, but the offered selection of mains was limited. We were not permitted to order any sides unless we ordered a main (which we did not want). I have never before experienced such a restriction. We decided not to stay, paid our booking fee and went up the street where we had a wonderful selection and delicious food.
