I had a great experience with Tina cutting my hair here. First, the place is really clean, well-lit, and pretty. The front desk person was nice, though I was not offered a drink; I was kind of expecting one (based on other reviews?) but this is not why I came. Tina was great; we spent some time chatting until I was confident she knew what I wanted, at her insistence. She was very professional, and ended up giving me a great cut! And I brought in a challenge: I went from very long to quite short. She even said something about how cutting curly hair is different because it's different for every person. So true. So Tina was great and I also really liked the massage hair washing chairs. For the price it would be tough to do better. read more

I'm not really a 'Woohoo' kind of guy, but I'm very fond of The Lift. After moving to Western Mass about 3 years ago to work for a little company in the Eastworks building, I decided to try the Lift downstairs and have never strayed. Both Taylor (who has since moved down to Studio 101 in Providence) and Sam have consistently given me haircuts as good as any I've had, and I like that when I shut up and watch, they're just as immersed in 'getting it exactly right' as I am when I write software. This place is amazing! I came here to get my hair colored for the first time ever and I had such a great experience. I was really nervous to make the change. My stylist, Christel, was so friendly, professional and answered all of my questions. She listened intently to everything I had to say and made me feel so comfortable. They give you a beverage and cookies and have ipad docks while you're waiting. All of the chairs at the wash station are massagers and the stylists give you an extra long head massage when they wash your hair. All of the staff is extremely friendly and professional. I had 2 haircuts here from 2 different people. I was unhappy with both. Both seemed to have same technique- chop inside the hair making it uneven & much more prone to frizz. Also both refused to blow dry after request. I didn't push it but probably I could have. Nice ambience. read more

Words to describe The Lift: Trendy, Expensive, Clean, I have been getting my hair done at The Lift for a year or two now, and have overall good experiences there. The receptionists are friendly and attentive, offering you a drink and taking your coat. I see Lindsey as my stylist and she always knows what will work best with my hair type and offers many suggestions as to what I could do with my hair, yet never pushes a particular style on me. I also like that I'm never pushed to buy products at The Lift. The shampoos might be my favorite part of the salon; the reclining, massaging chairs and head massages are to die for! The only two things I have disliked about The Lift are: 1. The prices seem a pinch high for the services rendered. I do understand quality styling comes with a price tag, but we're taking $150 (plus tip) for a root touch up and bang trim with a conditioning treatment added in. 2. I also think it is very confusing to be shuffled around between girls throughout your time at the salon. One girl will shampoo you, the stylist will cut your hair, and yet another girl will blow-dry you. I never know how to tip in this situation because I don't know who's who, and just end up tipping the stylist. Overall, I enjoy this salon and will return. I recommend it if you are willing to spend the money on your hair. read more

The hair stylist I went to is definitely talented, however, after two visits I did not get what I wanted. I understand color changes are difficult, however, twice my stylist said she could give me the hair I showed her in multiple pictures, and unfortunately my result was disappointing. Now, almost $500 later, my hair is something I'm not happy with. It's not even close to what I asked for. If the stylist hadn't told me she could do what I asked for, I think I'd be less frustrated. I have never been charged so much money for such a terrible experience. I recently went to the easthampton location for a root touch up on my highlights. On the website the price for a full head of highlights is $87 but can vary. Lets just say they make up there prices as I was charged $200 just for the touch up. I questioned the receptionist and she said I was charged for the highlight, the wash and conditioner and then charged for the stylist to blow dry my hair. Completely unbelievable. I will not be returning to this salon and suggest others look elsewhere read more

What to say,nothing like a Metropolitan.I had an appointment for color and cut in June.As soon as I sat down in chair I was covered in short grey hair.Sit was not wiped down in God knows when.My hair dresser tried to be friendly,talked about herself and her kids,and her mom that is babysitting for her.After my color was washed(1hr.)wait,they sat me down again for another 1 hr .of waiting.So I came at 4:45 left at 6:30 with not cut or style.Finally I walked out ,because waiting for somebody to finish my hair was just too much after 2 hrs.Than they called me with free hair cut or got card offer.Don't waist your time on The Lift,so many better places out there. read more

I went the Lift to get an ombre fixed from another salon. I had read so many good reviews that I was confident this salon could do the job. I even called up explaining my dilemma when scheduling my appointment. The appointment started off nice. I had an appointment with Amanda who asked me what I wanted done. I showed her a picture of the hair color I wanted (a strawberry blonde-red like my roots). She went and mixed the color, after matching a swatch to my hair, and started coloring. After the color sat, she rinsed me out and did a conditioning treatment to her recommendation. She managed to keep me out of view of the mirror for most of the time when blow drying, and then finally I saw the reveal. It was way too dark, almost brown. Not at all like the picture. Anyways, I was a bit embarrassed after she was done and too shocked to say much. I paid and left, almost running to my car. After ten minutes of realizing what happened I called the salon asking for my money back. They didn't even question it and immediately reimbursed me over the phone. Needless to say, it was my fault for salon jumping and being too trusting with a new hairdresser. It was definitely a lesson learned. I just wish the hairdresser had owned up to her mistake, instead of telling me it looked "really pretty". It just wasn't what I had asked for. Unfortunately, given the bad experience, I didn't go back to get it fixed - and will not be going back again. Luckily all my friends said my hair didn't look too bad after. They just said it was too dark for what I asked for. Oh and a few days later when doing laundry, I noticed the shirt I was wearing that day had hair dye on it. :( read more

I happened upon the Lift thanks to a recommendation from a friend. It is really hard to find the right salon, these days and so I called for an appointment with some caution. The salon is located in the Eastworks, which is a renovated factory space. I really liked the space and felt comfortable upon my arrival. My stylist, Courtney, was friendly and able to focus in on what I wanted to do to my hair... even though I wasn't totally sure myself. The hair washing experience was quite indulging and including a massage chair, a heated towel over my eyes and a 5-minute head massage. By the time we moved on to the hair cut, I was incredibly relaxed. Courtney chopped about 10-12 inches off my length and the final outcome was a super cute new look for the fall. As other reviewers commented, the price was quite a bit higher than other salons I've visited in the area and seemed more in line with my SF hair appointments. That said, I was pampered and pleased with the cut so I'd recommend giving this place a try if you can spend the extra 20 (or so) bucks. read more

I've been coming to The Lift for haircuts ever since it opened the North Amherst location, and the stylists I've seen have always done a wonderful job. Yesterday I showed up half an hour late for my appointment (I thought it was a 2 when it was really at 1:30) and Amanda (the stylist I was scheduled with) had already left, and the front desk had to call her to come back. I felt so bad for making such a stupid mistake but everyone was super nice about it and didn't give me a hard time at all. When Amanda came back she was very understanding about my mix up. Even though we were behind schedule she gave me an amazing cut and blow out. I didn't feel rushed at all and she really took her time to do a good job. I was just so blown away by how nice everyone was despite me being so late, and how great of a job Amanda did with my hair! I'm sure that if this had happened at another salon I would've been yelled at and guilted by the stylist. Big thanks to Amanda and everyone at The Lift for running such a phenomenal salon! read more

So I went to The Lift for the second time last week. The first time was a very good, memorable experience, but I can't say that the haircut was totally transformative or anything. Last week, however, I received the best haircut of my life from Chelsea. I've recently been very sick with my chronic illness, and it makes my hair weak, dry, and mangy looking. To be honest, I was a bit nervous even going in to the salon for a haircut because my confidence was so low. I told Chelsea about my issues, and she was extremely encouraging and upbeat about the whole thing. She took off just a little bit at the end, gave my hair some layers, and gave it more volume on top, resulting in much healthier, youthful looking hair overall. Then she spent a while blow-drying it to perfection. My hair has honestly never looked better, even when it was healthier. I could have cried when she finished, I was so happy with what she'd done. I can't recommend Chelsea or this place enough. read more

This salon is friendly, professional, and inspiring. The ambiance is chic and comfortable. I saw Lindsay as she was recommended to me by a girlfriend. I went in with pictures of what I wanted: "Sombre" caramel highlights that framed my face and were more concentrated on the lower half of my hair. I had virgin, dark brown hair about 4" past my shoulders. I really wanted the highlights to look natural and blend into my hair while being very noticeable. Lindsay asked me some questions and immediately knew what I wanted, assuring me that it would look fabulous and that it would be a great change. I trusted her and could tell by her own personal aesthetic that she had a great eye. She painted the color onto my hair in specific areas, an art called "Balayage." This dye she used did not smell at all. The waiting time was not so bad, and the great part was that I did not have to sit under a lamp. The shampoo experience was out of this world. The massage chair I sat in while she shampooed my hair was so comfortable. She put a warm washcloth over my forehead while she massaged my scalp for what felt like 15 minutes! Hands down the most luxurious hair experience of my life. She gave me a nice blowout with soft, romantic waves and I could really see the color now. I absolutely love the color and what she did-the placement is amazing. I will definitely be going back to Lindsay and the Lift, and have already made plans to send my sister to her as a graduation gift:) read more

I've never had such a bad experience with highlights. First she gave balayage, which came out a cheap orangy color that made my natural hair color (auburn) look gray, and which made me look like I was due for a highlight retouch anyway. When I went back, they were very kind to not charge me to have it fixed, but after I went into the description of what I wanted, and even brought pictures of my own hair from previous highlighting experiences, they added this phosphorescent yellow color that bears no resemblance to the warm, strawberry blonde I wanted, and which buried most of the remaining red from my natural color. They were very nice and I was happy with the cut I got, but this color does not suit me at all, and it has left me feeling ugly every time I look in the mirror. I'm afraid to have it fixed again, because I don't want them to remove what little red I have left underneath. I would cut my hair down to my scalp if it didn't take so long to grow back. read more

I had been going to The Lift for over 5 years and all of a sudden I could no longer get an appointment. When I spoke with friends of mine who have been going there for years like I have, I found out they had similar experiences. The products that get pushed on you never have prices on them, so by the time you get done with your cut, color, any extra treatments and products, it's easily $200+. I was initially very upset that an appointment couldn't be found for me, but now it's probably the best thing that's happened. I have found another stylist and my hair has NEVER looked better. I got more compliments on my hair after one visit to my new stylist than I have had in 5 years here. So thanks to The Lift for not "finding" me an appointment after 5 years of loyal service, because I am now going to a stylist who appreciates my business and actually spends time with me and has done my hair better than I could have ever imagined. read more
