I really liked my time at this little dive bar. i loved that it had a touch tunes, so customers could place music. The bartender was very kind and she was nice to our group even though we were a rowdy bunch (especially me). The vibes were great and I also really enjoyed the crowd this bar drew in. Stayed in town for 3 months doing construction work. Despite being obvious out of towners, this bar provided us with a home like experience every weekend. Sweet staff, sweet patrons. Will be working next month about an hour away n will still be willing to drive here just for a modelo, pool table and juke box. One week ago tonight, I was here. The quintessential "dive bar," right in the heart of Northern California Gold Country. Placerville - aka "Old Hangtown." It's hard to leave a review for a dive bar. I mean, what are you going to say? it was a "dive." It was smoky. It was crowded. The bathrooms were gross. The drinks were strong. Well, let me tell you, that's exactly what I'm going to say! Ha, ha! My brother and I walked in after an eventful Thanksgiving with my 91 year-old grandmother, my uncles, and other extended family. We were ready for a couple of drinks, that's for sure! We knew this place would be rough around the edges, and we were right - It was perfect! No smoking inside, of course - everyone smoked outside the front door. Naturally, all the smoke came inside anyway. The place was crowded - we traded off the one single barstool that was vacant, but this was not a big deal. Sitting would have just made me tired! The bartender was super attentive, and took our order right away - we got a couple of Jack and Cokes, and they were no joke - super strong, thank you very much! The only real "negative" was after we ordered a second round (why not) - that's when the karaoke started. I don't normally mind karaoke, but this was ridiculously loud - we couldn't even have a conversation without screaming at each other! To make matters worse, the people singing were phenomenally bad. I mean, they stank! We chugged our drinks, and were out of there! Too bad, as we were really enjoying our time! So, if you're in the area and want to experience a true dive bar, intoxicated locals and all, this is it! Oh, and by the way.....the bathrooms were super-gross. What a surprising and disturbing experience from the owner and staff. We came into celebrate a birthday after a long hard days work and rather than a welcoming atmosphere I was immediately targeted by the owner. She demanded my ID, which I supplied, then determined it wasn't good enough for her. She then demanded a second form of identification. Claimed she didn't believe I was as old as I claimed lol. She was the rudest "service professional" I've come across in a long time. Typically this area is a great place and the people are friendly. However, I will NEVER recommend this specific dive discrimination bar to anyone in my life. I'm sad I had to give it 1 start because it deserves nothing. This woman ruined my friends birthday. read more

Super friendly, somewhat divey. I was in town on a Monday night, so I wandered in. Every single person who walked by was friendly. Except Frank. The woman he was with was chatting up me and the total stranger who had sat down at my table. Frank was displeased. But no one else cared, Frank. Just sayin. They have a pool table and darts. Great prices. Strangers were telling each other jokes, photo-bombing each others' selfies, and helping each pick out music on the juke box. Note: It was not karaoke night. The music on the box was at a very nice level. Loud enough to sing along if you wished. But you could still talk without shouting in someone's ear. I might be back next Monday. I am new to the area and was looking for a close place to chill and unwind. I ended the night with the most wonderful conversation with the bartender who kindly shared her life experiences which mimicked my own but she included how much she loves the support of the small town, her job, her home and the peace and serenity she now has. I came here two nights in a row while I was in town for my brothers wedding. This place is conveniently located in downtown Placerville and is about as old as the history of Placerville and definitely a dive bar Night one: I came with the bride/birthday girl and the groom (my baby brother), our parents, and close family friends as well as the wedding party. The bartender's were attentive and the prices appeared to be pretty amazing. I don't remember the bartender's name from this evening but he was good- cut us off at the right time. Night two: Zach and Mary were the tenders of the bar- they were super friendly and when my cousin spilled his beer at the bar Zach had it cleaned up before my cousin realized what had happened. After conquering the Rubicon trail it was high time to celebrate, so the team came here to enjoy some well deserved libations. The drinks were cheap and stiff as all hell and that's what we were looking for. The local townsfolk were something else and definitely entertaining, except for the super fat chick that thought she was the hottest thing since blow up dolls. Mary is my favorite. Since the first day I came in before I moved here. She carded us (which we thought was hilarious cause we are over 35). She was hilarious and hospitable. Made great drinks but really just made our day. Now I live here and I love to come in on her shifts. She's the only one during the day that turns off the extremely bright stage lights. The locals may not agree, but this is a necessary break on the drive from the Bay Area to Tahoe. Right downtown, just off the freeway (depending on what kind of creative road construction projects are going on) and a unique vibe. Thursday night karaoke is particularly fun, but any time is good to swing in for a tipple. I liked the place enough to buy a t-shirt. I'll be wearing it when I drop in this Friday evening. Sooo sad to post this after 15 years of loving this place. I visit Placerville at least once a year every year. Liars Bench is my go-to bar right across from my hotel. I have always had good service, interesting mix of locals, good drinks etc. Tonight I was one of five people at the bar, my husband being the 4th, and we sat for 15 minutes without an acknowledgement. The two bartenders kept very 'busy' at the other end of the bar...no patrons there either. Finally, because I am stubborn and waited for service because you will serve me as a proper patron, I was approached. Drink was fine, he spoke directly to my husband though, even though I put up the credit card as a tab. Have I mentioned that I am the only person of color in the bar? The town? Well, yes, I am. So yes, it went down that way. I had a few drinks. I wrote this in between 1 and 2, after I asked the lovely woman behind the bar for a drink with ZERO acknowledgement besides a dismissive eye roll. Karma won't kick my booty though because I will still leave a tip. I am a very generous tipper so they won't experience that because I have never been so disrespected as a customer. read more

We were on one of our marathon dive bar rides and stopped into the Liar's Bench while in Placerville. It was crowded, loud, the beer was frigging ice cold and complimented my huge pour of Patron - which was chased with a bag of Cheetos's. The bartenders were on the ball, attentive, and took care of business. It can get kinda of tight at the bar as it is a very narrow establishment, but that's what makes it great. The information was correct because I didn't get arrested/fined for sleeping and working out of my vehicle. When other locations charged excessive prices for beverages The Liars Bench provided me with affordable libations. The Liars Bench was one of the few positive aspects to my work trip to California. However, the owner Lori is a control tripping b*@!! who routinely ruins the experience of visiting this bar by trying to pull rank and be unnecessarily negative to those supporting her business simply because "she can".
