Dai Due - Sweet Potatoes!

My husband and I decided to try out Dai Due for our 8th anniversary, and unsurprisingly it was…read moreamazing! First off the reservations were pretty open mid-week; I had booked for Tuesday several weeks ahead of time but then had some plans shift and was able to change my reservation to Wednesday just a couple days ahead of time with no issues. We walked in through the front as the back entrance wasn't really obvious from the parking lot (which is quite small), but that was cool as we got to walk by the deli counter and see the meat and pickled veggies etc that were for sale. Our server was great, very helpful in suggesting items, explaining the menu, and answering any questions we had. On her suggestion we started with the sauteed mushroom appetizer but also requested the black garlic butter to be added on the side (I don't think there was an up charge) and this was a great choice! The mushrooms were tender but with a nice bite and super flavorful. We also got the grilled oysters- I forgot exactly what was in the sauce it had miso and something else, but it was so rich and flavorful! I couldn't decide what was the best between the two apps they were both amazing. The husband ordered the antelope over regular fries (as he doesn't like sweet potatoes) which they were happy to accommodate. It was delicious- tender and perfectly cooked with the chive butter on top. I had never had antelope before and found it very pleasant, not very gamey but with a slightly different flavor than beef. I got the quail over grits with a creole sauce and sauteed kale- amazing! It comes with two quail that I think were spatchcocked- the only bones were in the legs and wings so you could eat it easily. The grits were creamy and the sauce with the kale and quail was delicious. I was able to finish my whole meal but was pretty stuffed at the end! Our waitress encouraged us to get a dessert but when we declined brought us out a bowl of chai ice cream to share as she said she wasn't going to let us leave on our anniversary without a treat! All in all a great experience, only complaints are that they don't serve cocktails (there are plenty of local Texas liquors to choose from!) but we did enjoy a glass of wine, and then went next door to Vic and Als after dinner for a dessert cocktail!

The restaurant was very cozy and comfortable. Service was great. Food was great. We had the pastrami sandwich. Biscuits and gravy with Antelope sausage and sourdough pancakes. Also the lemonade and green tea. I will definitely be back again .

Once upon a time Cesar Chavez was a Mexican neighborhood…read more Houses were small, and cheap. They were carefully maintained, often with a little religious decoration in the front. The people were poor, but respectably poor. You could have been in San Antonio. Then the Yuppies came. Along came McMansions written up in Architectural Digest. Along came microbreweries with tasting rooms decorated in industrial steel. Along came upscale restaurants with small portions on skewers and extensive holdings of artisanal sake. But the old Cesar Chavez never went away. The houses are still there. The people are still there. And a lot of those people go to Buckets. * * * Don't expect to find microbrews at Buckets. They ain't got 'em. Don't expect to find single malt scotch - or any scotch at all. They ain't got that. They got domestic beer in cans and bottles. They got Corona and they got Dos Equis. If you want to get fancy, they can make you a Michelada. Domestic beers are two bucks. They got what matters and the neighborhood loves em for it. The beer is cold and cheap and there is plenty of it. They got screens everywhere. They got good seating. And they got one of the few Tejano music machines in the city. * * * The crowd is super-friendly and knows each other. The place was packed the night I was there Which was the night of the AFC playoff between the Kansas City Chiefs and the New England Patriots. Every man and woman was a Kansas City fan. They knew the team. They knew the players. One guy was dressed up as a Kansas City Chiefs mascot with the full suit and headdress. Everyone did tomahawks when the Chiefs made big plays. I doubt they were Chiefs fans because they all came from Kansas City. They were Chiefs fans because they had watched a zillion games together of teams from all over the place. Over the course of many many games, they had come to a consensus on what teams they liked and what teams they hated. I suspect the crowd has some other strong preferences as well. There aren't that many places in Austin where they put Oklahoma City Thunder paraphernalia on the ceiling. * * * The crowd ranged in age from thirty to sixty. There were a lot of married couples. People were sitting together in three big clusters of obvious friends. Lots of people were mixing among the clusters. There were about forty people there. I was one of four Anglos. There was one black. Everyone else was Hispanic. People were happy we were there and were totally friendly. One drunk was especially friendly. He was giving me hugs and whispering in my ear about Tom Brady being the greatest quarterback ever. He was also telling his story to anyone who would listen - which was most of the people in the bar. Everything was fine. * * * There is a sign on a pillar in the bar telling everyone to stay friendly. There is a firmer message on the back door - laying out the rule that you are absolutely expected to be friendly. Lewd or inappropriate clothing is not welcome. Gang colors and gang activities are not welcome. It says so right on the sign. They lay down the law on the outside, so you have a warm comfy atmosphere on the inside. And a warm comfy place this is. It's even more comfy if you come here a lot and get to know the people who live here. It is more comfy still, if you root for the Chiefs. If Kansas City is playing, wear red.
