Initial review VS REVISED review: Mike is awesome and I can appreciate the fact that he has great pride in his business/reputation! My first initial contact was through my car dealer almost 6 months ago (which he came to me) I did purchase an additional device outside of what the dealer covered that day. That device did stop working for me this week which I called and left a message (outside of business hours) and Mike called me back that same day and we were able to set up a time the very next day to meet and he reprogrammed my key fob in no time!!! I am so grateful for his professionalism and willingness to help so urgently. I was a little skeptical to call only because great customer service just doesn't seem to exist anymore but I'm so glad that I did call and everything went so smoothly. Revised: Welp the excellent customer service I once experienced went out the window this go round. This business will take your money give you faulty parts and blame it on you when it no longer works. I only used this service bc Lexus of Richmond sent them out to replace my car key, sold me on a key fob which I spent nearly $200 for and within 3 months the remote no longer worked. Replaced batteries only to realize that the remote deprogrammed (I've purchased key fobs from other businesses and never had to get reprogrammed 3 times in one year) I had no problem going to them due to the malfunctioning remote (travelled 30 mins) everything worked fine, then a couple months later the fob doesn't work again. I called and was grateful I only had to go 6 mins away to get reprogrammed only for 5 days later I go to unlock/start my truck in 20 degree weather w 3 kids and the doors wouldn't unlock. Texted and called asked could I please come to them today due to being 9 months pregnant and delivering my baby in the morning to get reprogrammed and was ignored sent to voicemail and told to stop calling. So now I'm left to use a key to manually unlock the driver door rush to start otherwise the alarm will go off and then unlock the other doors to let my kids in the car (2 under 1 years old) in 20 degree weather. Mike was my initial contact the first 2 interactions. These last two time was 2 different guys Mike was no where in sight. Spend your hard earned money at your own risk, this business doesn't have 1 star reviews for nothing. read more

Ran over my keys with my lawnmower, only me. Destroyed my wifes Honda key. Went by the dealer with an extra key to get one made and they said they would need the car all day in addition to the key and gave me a price. At the time I didnt have the car. A customer of mine had used the The Key Guy so I sent him an email. Gave me a price depending on the type of key I wanted, was $100.00 cheaper than the dealer so my wife had him come by her work and in 15 minutes new key. Highly recommend. read more

Loved working with Mike. He was available quickly, re-keyed all the locks/doors in our house and installed some new locks for us. His price was super reasonable and he completed the work quickly. Very nice and professional, I'd for sure use him again. Thanks Mike! read more

BUYER BEWARE. I had the misfortune of losing my car key earlier this week and had to rush around to find a replacement. I called my mechanic, who recommended a few locksmiths, including Mike. I have a push to start car and I was told that he would be much cheaper than going to a dealer. I called him and told him the situation and what I would need and he said he could come fix it right then, which was convenient. However, it would cost me $285 for one key. At that point I should've just taken it to the dealer because at least then I know it would work properly; but I was in a bind and needed him to come to me. He got it working and I was on my way. The following day, I was able to lock my keys in the car, something that didn't happen the entire 5 years that I've owned this car. (You're not supposed to be able to lock your key in a push to start car). I had to call yet another locksmith, who came out and told me that the key was programmed incorrectly and that I should call and see if he could fix it for the amount I paid. They also told me that they could get me a brand new dealer key and program it for less than $100 in the future. That blew my mind since Mike had told me that I couldn't get a legit key for anything less than what he charged me.... Fast forward to today. I called Mike to let him know that I was having an issue with the key and would like him to come check it out. He proceeded to tell me that it was not his problem and that he could come look at it but he would charge me $65. I had just paid him $285 for a brand new key that he said would work "just like I had gotten it from the dealer." He placed the blame on me and my car saying that it was a coincidence that it stopped working and said my antenna was probably broken. I don't think so. My key worked perfectly for the 5 years I've had it, and if I supposedly paid for a brand new dealer key, I would assume it should work like I had gotten it from the dealer. Lesson learned. Next time if I am ever in need of a new key, I will definitely do my due diligence and go elsewhere. I wouldn't waste your time or money on this guy, because unfortunately for me, I got scammed. read more

I lost my car key in the airport last week (lucky me) and needed to find a locksmith in Richmond quickly. I called Mike on Tuesday and he came to my rescue on Wednesday when I landed. The entire process was extremely painless and only took less rhaminutes. He is very fast, professional, and charismatic. I will certainly be referring my friends to him in the event they have any key trouble. Would definitely recommend! read more

The key guy answered my call immediately and was at my place an hour after the call. My key had broken off into my lock. I was charged $65 for the visit, and $45 for a new lock. Which I was happy to pay to quickly fix the lock and get into my house. The three stars are for the easy communication, and quick service. Unfortunately, the lock wasn't super smooth in working and completely stopped working after 5 days of having it. Luckily, my husband was home and able to remove the lock and replace it with a new one. The lock we purchased was much cheaper but higher quality. Granted, I know his prices are increased for convenience. read more

I needed a spare car key cut and programmed for my German car. They charged $200 less than the dealership, showed up at my house in 20 minutes and had the job done in another 20 minutes. They quality of the key they gave me is on or with my original dealership key. Even went above and beyond to fix one of my older keys that needed to be glued together. He did it at no charge too. I highly recommend the Key Guy. read more

Highly recommend! Mike was super responsive, knowledgeable, friendly, and professional. My Honda key and fob was falling apart, and he came to my office where the car was parked for the day, made me two new keys and programmed them in under 20 minutes. His prices were much better than the dealership, not to mention he traveled to me. Definitely give The Key Guy a call for locksmith or car key needs! read more

Great service with a rekey job! Mike came out, did some due diligence to make sure we really owned the place, then got to work. He rekeyed two doors, each with a deadbolt and doorknob lock. Gave us fresh new keys and even made sure to make the originals stand out so we could use them to make more copies down the road. He was fast, professional, and really friendly. I will definitely use him for any other locksmith work in the future. read more

Great experience with the owner of this company. I called this morning needing someone to make a new key for my company's truck. The owner showed up at the time we spoke about. Very personable locksmith who enjoys his work. He quoted me a price over the phone and that was what I paid. I was impressed as he had finished cutting the keys and checked his work. Unhappy with the fit on one of the keys, he went back and made corrections. Truly appreciate the diligence with his work. I am sure I will be using him again as the service was quick, conversational, and the price was totally reasonable. Call The Key Guy first, you will be have your issue resolved timely and will have a nice experience throughout. Thank you Mike. read more

When we purchased our new home we needed to get all the locks updated quickly. I reached out to Mike through Yelp's quote tool and he responded promptly with pricing as well as a time frame to come out. When Mike arrived he was professional but down to earth. He gave great suggestions of recommended locks (i.e. double keyed lock for doors that had glass for security purposes). He had his entire shop set up in his van and took care of everything on-site. I trust his service and would definitely use him for future needs. read more

Professionalism, friendliness and customer service are my three basic measures of anyone I do business with. Fail at one, I may not do business with you again. Fail at two or more and you are not going to hear from me again. Mike at The Key Guy, well he hit all three before he walked in the door. I spoke with him by phone explaining my issue (lock issue, not personal!) and he gave me pricing and was at my home in less than an hour. I could not believe it, not only same day service but a promised time and not some crazy thing like "I'll be there between noon and 6pm". Once at my home, Mike introduced himself and jumped right into work. He explained what he was doing, gave me some maintenance pointers and ensured that not only each lock he worked on was performing properly but he tested each and every key to ensure they performed as they should. I was impressed with his attention to detail and level of customer service. I wish more people I do business with are like Mike. Plus, he is very personable and great to chat with. Thanks Mike! read more

Last December '15, I lost my keys at a mall and I never recovered my keys. My car was stuck at there because I didn't have a spare key. I was able to find out about The Key Guy and he was able to unlock and make me a key with a transponder chip. During that time he wasn't able to make me a keyless entry, which was the only con. Last night (11.17.16), Mike came to the rescue again and made me 2 car keys with a transponder chip. He was fast and reliable. Since I was returning customer, he gave me a discount and also made me a house key for free. Mike comes to you wherever and fixes the problem whenever. He's a real good guy and his moving station is really well built. All in all...if you need keys made quickly in any location, Mike is your guy! read more

Mike is responsive and thorough. He came out and quickly took care of making me two new copies of my car key when I had lost the one I had. He even took a look and made a quick fix on a house door lock that I had been trying to fix. 10/10 would recommend. read more

Michael is incredible - I would highly recommend The Key Guy for your key/lock issues in the Richmond area. I was in Glen Allen and the car wasn't starting. Michael came in less than a couple of hours, corrected my fears about ignition cylinder issues, created a new key, reprogrammed the spare key that wasn't worked either, and taught me a thing or two (maybe more) about car ignitions/keys, all within the space of twenty minutes, at very reasonable rates. Great experience! read more

The Key Guy came out within an hour and had a new car key for me in 20 minutes. He was friendly and polite-- and it was half the cost of the dealership. Highly recommended! read more

Michael is the best!!!!!! I came to Richmond from Maryland and lost my car key, called a few locksmiths company's to get a quote and Michael was the fastest and price was very good Very friendly and efficient highly recommended for the Richmond people read more

Mike is amazing. Was cool as a cat on the phone, came over as soon as he could and made me a key fob for my old car/minivan. The key made the alarm go off but after he made the key fob it works great now. It even opens the side doors to the van too. He made it in 20 minutes but I think it was more like 10 and only charged $100. The dealership wanted $200 to make me a key fob. Go with Mike. He's nice, sweet, cute and very professional. He just had a baby too. Go congratulate him. Yay Mike. You rock!!!! read more

Highly recommended. Mike is a really nice guy. I needed him to make some keys for my car--lost them, no spares available, and they have a chip so they have to be cut AND programmed. I called him at 2:15 on Monday, we agreed to meet at 4 PM downtown. He was right on time. Bike race traffic reroutes made me about 15 minutes late, but he was cool about it. We were done within an hour. His price seems to be fair (I didn't comparison shop). I did call another locksmith earlier in the day (recommended by the Ford dealer). By the time I got a callback from that guy, Mike was already working on my new keys. He is now programmed into my phone! read more

Excellent service and such a pleasant experience. Mike was able to program a new smart key for my Prius in no time at all and at less than what the Toyota dealership would cost for a new key. Super responsive and so incredibly nice. Highly recommend! Would not hesitate to call again or recommend to friends.

The key guy is great! I was stressed about how much it would cost to replace my key from the dealer but I looked around and found mike, who I must say is a super nice and cool guy. Very easy to work with. He was so fast! He had the whole little shop in his van and did it in two seconds. Really good prices and student discount. Totally recommend. read more

I contacted 3 lock services before reaching out to Mike @ The Key Guy to have my Silverton Boat key made. Everyone told me they couldn't help and I'd be better off changing the cylinder. I wasnt about to monkey around with an $80k boat ignition. Mike was quick to respond, showed up on time and had the boat keys made in 10 minutes. He's a super nice guy, very personable and knows his stuff. I highly recommend him and his company. He even offered me as military an extra key. Highly, highly, highly recommend. I called at noon after having trouble getting into my house because the key and lock were not working like they should. Mike came around 1:00, went to get an extra lock and doorknob set for the back door so they would match and was done by 2:15. Fast, efficient, courteous, and reasonably priced. It doesn't get any better than that. I will no longer have to worry about the locks on my house. Great job! I would recommend this service to anyone! read more

Mike is outstanding. We chose him for an emergency job based on his perfect Yelp rating, and we immediately saw why he has it. Friendly, reasonable, and completely professional. Micheal arrived just as promised and greated me warmly & professionally. He got started immediately to add an additional key fob to my Prius. This wasn't his first Prius but I bet it was the hardest. This new fob was not accepting the codes completely. But the Key Guy is one determined man that will NOT let this little hybrid get the best of him. Now this was not an emergency, but a convenience key for me, so no worries that we can wait till he finds 'The Fix'. I kept the new fob, no charge UNTIL it works perfectly. And he didn't charge by the hour but by the job. And he keeps his promise. Several hours and a new computer / program later and he got it done! New fob is in my hand, plus new battery in my original fob. This is the type of man that I would want to work for me - not afraid to say I don't know, but I'll find out; & will never say I can't. Highly recommend! read more

I locked myself out of my apartment this past weekend. I called Mike based on Yelp reviews and couldn't be more happy with his service.
