What an amazing hidden gem in Encinitas. I lived in the neighborhood for 10 years and didn't know it was there. I came back to visit friends and booked the upstairs suite for my birthday. It was wonderful. Liz and Carol are amazing and so nice!! We had wonderful breakfasts and conversations. The room was like heaven and having two toilets was such an unexpected treat. The views are beautiful and you can experience the Southern California lifestyle by walking to the beach in the morning. Fantastic place to stay for a staycation or a visit to Encinitas. read more

Gracious, caring, friendly, are what I can say about Liz and Carol! The first time I stayed there I was just looking for a lovely clean place to stay with comfortable beds, that was easy to get to the beaches, visit friends, explore and just kick back. A simple breakfast would have been just perfect... but what I received was a beautiful feast! (this last time isn't the first time I have been there--I continue to come back because it has become my home-away from home and there ladies have become dear friends) There is over the top hospitality, lovely robes, quality towels, beautiful food, delightfully comfortable beds and bedding--forget something? no worries, it's there for you. Privacy if I want, but I was always welcome to join in anything happening in the kitchen--became a favorite hangout for conversation and treats. A short drive from the freeway is The Kate Stanton Inn. Liz Clarke is the main innkeeper and shares her home with you, a home away from home. She has lived in Encinitas for almost 40 years and knows the community rather well. After a warm greeting and check-in with Liz and Carol (who has resided in Encinitas for over 20 years after moving from the United Kingdom), you are shown your room. Just like at home, you are welcome to the living space and outdoor patio. From the outdoor patio, you can actually see the Pacific Ocean to the west and San Elijo Lagoon Reserve to the north. It is the largest coastal wetland in San Diego County with nearly 300 different species of birds calling this beautiful place home throughout the year. The Nantucket Room is a bright and airy 300 square-foot bedroom with bathroom en suite. This first floor room is decorated like a Nantucket beach cottage with traditional blue and white colors. There is also a wonderful cross-breeze from being on the corner of the house along with lots of shade on the south side. The room includes a queen bed, flat screen TV above an electric fireplace, private bathroom, work desk, rocking chair, chaise lounge, and private patio. The private patio has a tropical feel surrounded by fruit trees and flower bushes. After settling in, Liz will serve up early evening cocktail or glass of wine. While sitting in the living room and relaxing, you feel so comfortable as if catching up with long, lost relatives. Conversations of childhood, how you met your mate, what you do for a living, and what your plans while in Encinitas come with ease. Resident mascot, guardian, and attention receiver, Kai, a mixed breed pup, is the friendliest and gentlest dog you'll ever meet. She looks to be part Rottweiler, German Shepherd, and maybe Labrador Retriever. She has the cutest blonde "eyebrows" giving her a look of curiosity when she looks at you. After finishing drinks, it was time to head out for a dinner celebration. When we returned, Liz and Carol had performed a turn down service with comforter pulled down and provided a cold bottled water and York Peppermint Patty as a sweet, minty touch before going off to Neverland. Such the perfect touch to end a perfect day! In the morning, Liz prepared a lovely breakfast of what she calls "Lazy Innkeeper's Eggs Benedict". Hollandaise is easy to make but takes a lot of time and patience until you get the perfect consistency. She found that after making hollandaise sauce, most guests either didn't want any or just wanted a little bit. So instead of hollandaise sauce, she melts cheese on top of the poached egg and calls it a day. It totally works! The flavor is reminiscent of an open-faced breakfast sandwich, but more luxurious. The eggs are poached to perfection and when you cut the egg, a gush of golden, silky yolk flows out, lovingly saucing the egg whites, ham, and English muffin below. A make-your-own-parfait of vanilla yogurt, granola, fresh blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries is absolutely splendid as light and creamy meets sweet and tangy. After breakfast, it was time to do some work. But Kai had other plans. Kai wandered into our room and wanted some attention. After a doggy massage, she plopped down on the floor and took a nap. The hubby returned to the rocking chair to watch TV and I returned to my laptop to finish some work before venturing out to the beachside of town for the Foodie Fest Encinitas. After the Foodie Fest Encinitas, a food coma took over and it was couch potato time. The food coma turned into a nap until dinner time. Liz and Carol recommended a restaurant called Fish 101 which has a casual atmosphere and also has poke on the menu. On Sunday mornings, Liz likes to serve bagels and lox for breakfast. Carol picks up bagels warm and fresh from Einstein Bros. Bagels along with a selection of cream cheeses. Standard accompaniments of sliced tomatoes, red onions, and capers are artfully displayed along with sliced and peeled mango and first-of-the-season peaches. The toasted, soft, chewy wheat bagel is the perfect base to the fluffy cream cheese, buttery cured salmon, sweet red onion, and salty capers. My wife and I had a great stay at the Kate Stanton Inn. Liz and Carol are great hosts and very thoughtful. They literally have opened up their home to guests and make you feel right at home. Each evening we came home to a pitcher of water and a glass by each side of the bed and a Peppermint Patty on our pillows. The house is nice and quiet and there are views of the ocean and a lagoon from the living room. It is close to the San Diego Botanical Gardens, the beach and plenty of other attractions. Be aware there are pets in the house. We shared a bathroom with their roommate however he was not there that weekend. The mid-priced room and other room have private bathrooms and a private patio or a deck. The deck has ocean views. Over all a great experience. read more

My wife Tina and I decided to find a nice getaway for a couple of nights and were completely impressed with this lovely B & B. Every reasonable amenity was afforded to us by the most charming and attentave of Inn keepers. Wonderful breakfasts and enjoyable conversations with our hosts, Liz and Carol. Spot on recommendations for food and points of interest. Superb attention to detail. We stayed for 4 nights in the Nantucket room and enjoyed every minute. When we arrived Liz had cookies and lemonade for us. Our room was immaculate, spacious and quiet. Each night when we came "home" the fireplace was going, and we had water and mints by our bed. Breakfast was delicious and different each day. I actually went two of the days without lunch because I wasn't hungry! It was a pleasure to spend time visiting with Liz and Carol. We figured out this was the sixteenth Bed and Breakfast we've stayed in during our 18+ years of marriage and the Kate Stanton Inn definitely ranks at the top! We would recommend this Inn to anyone looking for a cozy place to stay in the San Diego area. read more

First, it is a beautiful house in a beautiful location. All the amenities you could want or desire. Top Shelf. Don't worry. But what makes a stay here so completely memorable and wonderful-- and something you should not miss out on-- is Liz and Carol. They are the best hosts ever, the kind that become friends almost instantly. We recently stayed here during a challenging time visiting a sick relative. Liz and Carol were so sweet, so accommodating and, if you chose to engage with them like we did, so funny and interesting. It is hard to express how unusual and lovely an experience that is. My husband and I are looking to buy a home in Encinitas, so we've been making frequent trips down there with our son, who is 11 months old. Boy am I ever glad that all the hotels near Moonlight Beach were full and we were forced to branch out for our most recent trip. By this stroke of luck, we discovered the Kate Stanton Inn. From the moment we arrived, we felt right at home. Liz had inquired about our needs ahead of time and was prepared for us. She had already cleared space in the fridge for our baby food and had borrowed a high chair from the neighbors. She also made space on the counter for our bottles and other baby supplies. The location is wonderful, a quiet neighborhood with lovely views. The home itself is airy and light and spotlessly clean. I felt relaxed the moment I walked in and slept really well at night. They also have a nice patio where we fed our son his meals. He really enjoyed eating outdoors. The breakfast was so fresh and delicious. And the atmosphere that Liz and Carol have created there is so warm and friendly that we naturally formed a nice rapport with the other guests. In short, the Kate Stanton Inn is by far the BEST bed and breakfast I've ever experienced. If you're traveling to Encinitas then I highly recommend that you try this "home away from home" experience. read more

An absolutely delightful inn! It is both extremely beautiful and extremely comfortable - attention to detail and commitment to guest experience is evident in everything, from plush robes in the closet to comfortable furniture (and and mattress!). This place was truly wonderful. The hosts, Liz and Carol, were very welcoming and friendly. It is a really beautiful and scenic location in Encinitas, just a half hour outside of San Diego. The breakfasts were delicious and you could tell they genuinely care about making you feel at home and giving suggestions for what to do while you're in town. This inn is a nice house in a nice neighborhood with some seemingly amateur service that we were considering as a wedding spot for a small wedding and trying out bed and breakfasts on for size. At very least communications were polite and most times responsive (I say most times as upon initial contact it took 5 days for a reply). Once we finally were able to make an appointment to tour the property it was set for a day later in the afternoon. We arrive at our appointment early, just as the housekeeper was getting in her car to leave just after 3:30pm and waited until 3:45pm before ringing the doorbell as to not be outrageously early. We ended up having to ring the doorbell until 4:10pm, before giving up. During that time, a person did pull up in the driveway but did not acknowledge we were there, so we figured they were some other staff that wasn't in charge of giving tours or guest relations, not that it mattered because they were too busy hanging out in the car to realize a potential guest was standing there at the front door ringing the bell when they drove up. We didn't know they were in the driveway (the driveway is hidden from view to the right side of the garage which blocks the front entrance) until we saw as we were pulling away from the house. Its obvious they saw us though because every person who turned that corner down that street saw us standing there in plain view. The only one who came to the door was their dog. Sent an email to the Innkeeper 2 minutes after leaving. 50 minutes later an email was returned apologizing, stating they forgot to set a reminder and that they were just leaving the office. By this time we were already back at home after 50 minutes of traffic heading home. I suspect it was the person we were to be meeting who was in that driveway and was trying avoid having to show the place, which is awfully bizarre behavior. The fiance basically said this was very unprofessional, rude and asinine given that it had been less than 24 hours since the appointment was made and why no one was there while housekeeping was to supervise is questionable, and whatever was going on with that person in the driveway was awfully suspicious. And whomever that person was, if it was an expected staff member, should have been notified to expect someone with an appointment in case they run late or forget. All in all seems like a poorly managed inn, even giving the benefit of the doubt on the suspicious person. Granted its someones home who runs hospitality service out of it, but still very unacceptable. I run my own business at a home location where I meet with clients at and whenever I schedule appointments with new clients/guests, I am most certain to take it seriously enough to not have this happen to new clients. Nothing infuriates a person relying on your for your service more than unreliability especially when there are more than enough competitors they can go to who will be on time for appointments who want to encourage repeat business and especially when a client drives out of their way to come to you, so I see this as very unprofessional and telling of what future service may be like. The last thing anyone wants is to make a reservation here, show up on the schedule date and time, and not get the room they ordered, wasting time, gas and money heading to another hotel or , stand around the front door for however long in whatever weather conditions exist waiting to be let in. Luckily we were already in Bonsall for another tour appointment and maybe only wasted about 7 miles worth of gas and 10 minutes of extra time, but with gas costing about $5 for a gallon of 30 miles, its a noticeable loss. The place however is a nice (seems like a newer construction) house with nice old tile and walkways and gardened landscape off a cul de sac at the border of Encinitas and Carlsbad and has a partial view of the ocean and the lagoon there. So my suggestion is if you plan to stay here, call ahead to confirm your appointments before wasting a drive over. and call repeatedly if you don't hear back from email. Up until today's no show and a month of flaky communication (also unprofessional), this place would really only gain stars for its location being beautiful and convenient, it being a bed and breakfast and its view. But as far as service and security goes, I am not confident much exists if its this much of a hassle to get in the door. Sorry Ms. Stanton, but this was a huge let down. Service should be top priority with all the professionalism, reliability and common courtesy in force. If anyone in the hospitality industry lacks this MAJOR SERVICE DESCRIPTION for this HIGH COST its nothing more than a 2 or 3 star location. The general customer service here is equivalent to a 3 star hotel, yet costs 4-5 times as much. read more

My wife and I were looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of hotels along with their impersonal service. We were celebrating our 42nd anniversary and were considering a B&B. For us, that was a leap. For our first experience we chose the Kate Stanton Inn. All I can say is that it was like getting a glimpse of mythical Brigadoon appearing out of the mist. You see it and say, "I would like to go there." Yes, it was very clean, quite, warm and charming. But our hosts, Liz and Carol, graced our stay with the lavish hospitality that only comes from a sincere affection for people. We stayed in the Nantucket Room. In the morning we would enjoy coffee on the private patio while reading. Then breakfast, which was different and delicious every day. In the afternoon there was wine and cheese out on the patio again. This routine allowed us to work in many fun events throughout our stay. It was more than special. read more

My husband and I found this place through thorough internet searching. We knew we wanted to stay up in North County San Diego. This is a great, relaxing retreat Encinitas. Liz and Carol were really attentive innkeepers. We had a great opportunity to get to know Liz and Carol in our short visit of 4 days, 3 nights. They both try to accommodate our schedules as we were visiting with friends. Liz cooks a great breakfast every morning. She loves using fresh, organic ingredients. Her dog, affectionately called "Pup-pup" is really welcoming too. We stayed in the Nantucket room. I loved the decor throughout the house, lots of Pottery Barn furniture. There is a nice view of the ocean from the back patio of the house and probably from the larger bedroom upstairs. Overall, nice, quiet, and relaxing atmosphere. The inn is in a quiet neighborhood not too far from the beach and from hiking trails. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a nice, quiet place to rest and relax during the day. It's definitely an ideal bed and breakfast place. read more
