My fiancé and I just stayed here this weekend for a couple nights and had a wonderful stay. The place is tranquil and secluded, away from Main St and all the noise, but only a 5 min drive away. Dawn and Ed are great communicators, they had cookies ready for us on arrival, and Dawn met us to check us in and give us info. We stayed in the Rose room, which is roomy, has a heater and an old fireplace which they give you wood for. Bathroom/shower has a separate heater, and the room has its own patio, but we found it's much nicer to explore the grounds and sit on one of their many benches and chairs spread throughout the hillside with nice views. There are cows across the street that are friendly, and we went to say hi to them in the mornings and feed them tall grass. And don't forget to step outside the cottage at night to gaze at the Milky way galaxy...you heard me correctly...not just stars, you can see the faint outline of the Milky way because Julian is a Dark Sky community and Ed and Dawn's place is very dark at night...epic! Breakfasts are a delicious two course meal of a fruit dish and main. Added bonus is chatting with Ed and Dawn about Julian history and getting tips on places to go/eat. Ed and Dawn were also accommodating to bring our breakfast to their outdoor patio since my fiancé had some smell sensitivity to the food cooking in the main room (but also, it's kind of nicer to sit outside, but then you miss communing with the other guests) The main breakfast/communal area has a bunch of books and movies you can check out and take to your room, along with microwavable popcorn...we watched Gone with the Wind on VHS with the fire burning at night...such a charming and memorable time! Thanks Dawn and Ed! Our only recommendations would be: 1) for those with allergies, getting some cotton bed sheets rather than microfiber/synthetic material (we asked but they didn't have any at the time) 2) while we loved the charm of the themed rooms, there is just a lot of stuff, i.e. old teddy bears/dolls on shelves, old style window curtains that are more for show rather than necessary since the windows already have blinds, these things just make the room feel crowded and also gather dust. But maybe that's just our minimalist preference? 3) The room is advertised with a Queen bed, but seemed more like a Full (perhaps it's a European Queen?), just seemed on the smaller side. In any event, we'll probably try to book the Apple room next time which has a King size bed (which was already taken during our stay) and has a view into the woods. 4) the couch/futon cushion is detached from the wood frame and has a tendency to slide around, and it's also bigger than the seating area, so you could end up sitting on the cushion but not the frame, thus falling down. read more

Cozy, quaint and festive are the words I use to describe this lovely cottage bed and breakfast! Butterfield is nestled outside of the Main Street in Julian by about five minutes. The fruit sauce on the orange wedges was so good I needed to ask what was in it... but I won't spill those secrets here! The omelette was one of the best I ever ate, and I am VERY picky about my eggs. Poached pear?! Now THAT felt indulgent. If you have food allergies or sensitivities, let them know; they're happy to accommodate you. My only regret is that I didn't take more time to explore the area but... well... that bed was very good for napping!! Some notes: if you have mobility issues, be aware that at least some rooms plus the common area require stairs. Also, bring slippers if you stay in the FeatherNest room; it's on the ground floor so your feet might get a little chilly otherwise. This convenient location is only a few minutes drive from the Main Street in Julian. The room was extremely adorable with its quaint and homey vibes. We stayed in the Feathernest room which outlooks the forest and has perfect view of any animals that are roaming by. Ed and Dawn the inn keepers are friendly and welcoming and make you really feel at home. They serve an amazing breakfast with exquisite plating. We booked the Rosebud Cottage at Butterfield for 4 days/3 nights last month. We had the most amazing time. They were both there to greet us and gave us the most perfect recommendations for hiking, sightseeing, and eating. Our cottage was above the main house and not attached. It was so CUTE!!! A little private patio, wood burning fireplace (which Dawn and Ed always made sure we had new fire logs each day and kindling), comfy bed, private shower, large walk-in closet, and open living room/dining area. The whole area is secluded and an easy walk to downtown Julian. Dawn and Ed made us the most SPECTACULAR breakfasts each morning. The first course was always some sort of fancy fruit dish (glazed pears with a homemade sauce, orange pinwheels with a berry compote, etc.) and then the main course was served after... and always gourmet!!! (Pictures below). I took so many pictures of the food because it was all so perfectly prepared and amazing!. I truly cannot put into words how wonderful our stay was. All over town people knew Dawn and Ed. They are like a Julian staple! People could not say enough wonderful things about them when we told them where we were staying. A month after our stay, I had run out of Peach Wine Jelly that we picked up from a local farmer in Julian. My boyfriend called Dawn and Ed, and they went out of their way to locate it and to have it sent to me! A MONTH AFTER OUR STAY! I would definitely stay here again! P.S. The reviews are right. Ed and Dawn are very nice and welcoming. They run an excellent B&B and make you feel very welcome from the moment you arrive. Dawn gives very precise instructions and information about the B&B and your suite. Dawn also checks on your food allergies and follows through on making sure not to use any food products that you are allergic to. The Apple Sweet was very nice, quiet, comfortable, and had a wood burning fireplace. The bed is very firm and comfy. The room was stocked with everything you will need. The main gathering room has books, games, dvd's, popcorn, and snacks. there is also a guitar and piano available for use. The breakfast was made by Ed and Dawn and was tasty, and a wonderful way to start the morning. If you are staying in Julian make sure to give them a try. read more

Stayed at Butterfield Bed & Breakfast while on a trip to Julian with my sisters. Ed and Dawn are incredibly sweet and have the cutest bed and breakfast set up. We booked the cottage at the front, right by where we parked. Knowing that we were a group of 4, they set the couch up as the cottage's second bed and provided extra towels for the group. It was such a great spot for a quiet weekend getaway and our trip coincided with the meteor shower, so we were able to catch a few shooting stars given how away from the bright city lights Julian is. We had our own patio with seating and we were also able to access the property's backyard area. We also had access to the main living room / kitchen area at all times of the day. They kept the cookie platter full the entire time with fresh baked goods :D. The breakfast was a great homecooked meal with other people who were staying on the property, but my sisters weren't a fan of the cuisine. Butterfield B & B was worth every penny! We came up and stayed for my lady's bday for 3 days and she said she had one of the best vacations of her life! I came here with my husband to celebrate our anniversary. Rooms: 4 total. I stayed in the Stanza Italia with my husband and the room is beautifully decorated and clean. Lots of personality. The bed was very comfortable and I slept very soundly. There's a fireplace, AC, heater, ceiling fan, and a nice table outside great for reading. It's next to the gazebo and the kitchen. Innkeepers: Dawn and Ed are amazing hosts, very accommodating, good people. They really took care of us. Will miss them. Breakfasts: Served at 9am. Beautiful presentation, tasty, fresh ingredients, intimate, good conversations with other guests and Dawn and Ed. Just to keep it currently unanimous: 5 great big huge shiny stars. Bling! We stayed in the Apple Sweet too. So cute. Comfy bed, firewood included. They have 5 rooms. It is a very cute and private set up. Clean, with cute and quaint amenities. Like a ton of dvd's which is awesome cuz there ain't a dang thing to do around Julian much after the sun goes down. We sat out on loungers and stared at the stars while drinking our local wine- so peaceful and quiet. Breakfast was DE-LISH!!!! We scored maple baked apples and artichoke and mushroom frittata with homemade sausage. Ed is quite the Iron Chef. And the best for last: our hosts with the mosts. This was a wonderful place to stay, just a couple miles away from downtown Julian. Beautiful scenery, woodsy and extremely quiet at nite, perfect. My GF and I needed this time away to relax. We stayed 2 days and nites, we really enjoyed this experience. The breakfast was perfect, tasted amazing. There was only one drawback, but nothing to take away the experience of this location. The parking is very tight, so if possible, bring a mid size vehicle or smaller. I had a full size truck, very tight, but all worked out. We're looking forward to staying here again. read more

I took my wife here for our 2nd anniversary and we absolutely loved it. Let's just do a quick rundown of WHY we LOVED it: 1) Clean. I will never give a hotel/motel/B&B etc. a 5 star review if it's not perfectly clean. Buttferfild B&B was immaculate. 2) Location. Just outside of downtown Julian by roughly a mile nestled into the hills. 3) Our room; The Apple Sweet. Too cute with a wood burning fireplace very comfy bed and linens with a full bath...again, very clean. 4) The innkeepers. They are there cooking for you in the morning and have some wonderful stories to tell about their little town and the surrounding area of San Diego. At first I thought this place was too good to be true, as 100% of the reviews here are 5 stars. I came here for a getaway weekend and could not be more pleased. We had the Country Corner Room which is conveniently located a short flight of stairs away from the front porch of the B&B. The bf and I drove up while it was snowing and dark. Dawn and Ed were concerned for us and called us letting us know that we should chain our tires. I'm glad that we listened to them because we did end up having to chain our tires in order to get up to the cabin. We arrived in the dark of the night to Ed shoveling snow off the stairs and parking lot. That's real dedication to customer service right there. Dawn even came out to help us in inside and get a fire going. The Country Corner Room is small and cozy - just the right amount of room for two people. I could tell that every piece of decor in the room was thoughtfully picked out. The TV worked well and had access to all the cable channels. We even borrowed DVDs from living area's vast library and enjoyed watching movies all night, away from all the snow and wind. Our room was so CLEAN. And I am the type of person who wipes down the bathtub when I stay at a hotel. I didn't have to do that here, and everything was spotless. They even stock the bathrooms with this handmade Julian soap that has the best scent! The first morning we had breakfast, we had orange pinwheels with a marmalade sauce along with quiche. I don't think I have ever had a good quiche until I had Dawn's quiche. It was silky and dense. I wish I could have breakfast like that everyday! There was enough OJ and coffee to go around for everyone. I am a shy person at first, so I was actually nervous to share a breakfast table with people I didn't know. One thing I noticed about Dawn & Ed is that they are very good at listening to you and aren't nosy at all. They take the time to listen to the stories of their guests. The second morning we had a poached pear with some time of cinnamon sauce and stuffed french toast. The french toast was stuffed with bananas and nuts. It's just the type of food you would never get at a restaurant or anywhere else. Overall, I am totally sold on staying at a B&B rather than at a hotel! I loved this place! We were in one of the cheaper rooms, but it was so sweet and comfortable, I wished we were staying for more than just one night. Apparently, turning 35 only earns you one romantic night in the country. And the breakfast! Not a big morning-eater, I was a little daunted by a homemade frittata AND berry crisp, but they were both so good I wolfed them down and then started eying my boyfriend's crisp. The folks who run the place are sweet as can be and hung around with us talking about fires, which is the meat of most conversations with Julianites. However. Julian visitors, take note: We had a cigarette craving around 11pm and drove miles in every direction looking for a store that was open. We did not find one. If you need anything; cigarettes, snacks, toothpaste, baby food, gauze, tampons, ex-lax, tourniquet ---- whatever it is, buy it before 9 or you will be shit out of luck and probably bleed to death. read more

Ed and Dawn were very, very hospitable providing snacks, beverages, and an in-room breakfast. And the breakfast was great...poached pear in a cinnamon sauce, stuffed french toast with bananas and pecans in an orange sauce with bacon on the side. Coffee and orange juice. Very nice. My boyfriend and I wanted to visit Julian when the snow fell but we didn't want have to drive back home the same day, so we made plans to find a hotel ahead of time and stay for a night. After reading all the wonderful reviews about Butterfield B&B we decided to stay here and let me tell you we were not disappointed. We stayed at the rose bud cottage and the room was impeccable, it was clean and well cared for, there was nice attention to detail all around and it was wonderfully cozy. Ed and Dawn were very nice and friendly and made us feel right at home, you can tell they really take pride in what they do. We can't wait to come back!:) Just a little side note on the people and the service in the restaurants in town. My boyfriend and I have visited Julian quite a few times and the locals have never been very friendly, every time we've been to any of the restaurants or coffee shops, the service has always been rushed and our server/person has always been moody even without their locale being busy, I almost felt like they resent visitors which is weird because I'm assuming a lot of their businesses depend on tourists coming up from the cities in San Diego. They could all learn some hospitality tips from Ed and Dawn, they're wonderful hosts! read more

Cant imagine staying anywhere else in Julian. This was my first stay overnight, but it was perfect here. Its located just a minute from the main part of town (so no noise) and has all the privacy you could want. Stayed in the Apple Sweet which was great because no one ever passed by the door to our room (private entrance). It was cute and cozy and had great touches. Nice lotion, window seat, comfy bed, reading lights, etc. The hosts are great, and its not their fault that I really only like the bed & breakfast part of the b&b, and not so much the forced social interaction with a bunch of strangers at my most energetic time (not)..the morning. Dawn does a nice job of keeping conversation going, and not making it too awkward. Food was good, and the brownies in the parlor area are a nice touch. For Julian, this is the only way to go! read more

Stayed here this past weekend and LOVED it. We stayed 2 nights in the cute as a button rosebud cottage and look forward to returning when the weather turns cold (would have loved to have used the wood burning stove but it was too warm outside!) We had our own private patio where we enjoyed a lunch and star gazing on the lounges at night. The hosts Dawn & Ed are very nice, very welcoming, and very accommodating. And they make scrumptious breakfasts and ginger cookies! They offer coffee and tea all day long and have a great selection of dvds and vhs tapes. Butterfield B&B is an absolute gem in Julian. My wife and I stayed in the Apple Sweet room. As the name implies, the decor in the Apple Sweet is tastefully apple-themed and very quaint. This particular room features a very nice and firm king bed. A great fireplace, which was stocked daily with wood, kept us warm during the chilly April evenings. Our wonderful hosts, Dawn and Ed, cooked a delicious breakfast for us each morning and regaled us with interesting and colorful tales about their life in Julian. All of the B&B guests were seated around a large dining room table, which gave us a chance to get to know each other. Dawn & Ed basically treated us like family. Two things I observed about Dawn and Ed: 1) they are very much in love, and 2) they really enjoy running their B&B. Overall, we had a wonderful experience at Butterfield and would highly recommend staying there. read more

This is the first (and only so far) B&B I've been to. My boyfriend and I tried to book a quick getaway for the weekend. The only room available was the Rose Bud Cottage. I don't regret going for it at all. It was like our own little house with a tiny backyard (with two lawn chairs for sun/moon bathing!!) and our own parking spot right up in front. The size of the room is good for 4 people-- there's a bed and a sofa bed. The cottage itself felt super home-y and private. There's A/C and a fireplace. When we first got there, Dawn greeted us with warm smiles. We felt so comfortable-- we didn't feel that much of an outsider! Breakfast was great (homemade, delicious, and kinda nicely decorated too) and is located at the common room/lobby, or The Parlor, (which is separate from all the private rooms). Their dining table is set for about 12 people or so. Breakfast was come as you please but ends at a certain time (11? I can't remember...). The Parlor also has a free library of DVDs, games, and books. They also provided free wine glasses (to borrow of course)! This place was perfect for everything we needed and was looking for a quite getaway from the hustle of our busy lives. read more

My boyfriend and I stayed in the "Apple Sweet" last weekend. It was our first B&B and we loved it! All the apple accents in the themed room really added to our being in Julian. It was cozy, quiet, and private. Only a 5 minute drive, if that, from town. No noise from people or cars. I chose this room because of it's theme, the low fireplace, and the window seat. I was really happy with this selection. We were hoping for snow so we could watch while sitting on the window seat and drinking hot cocoa and cider.. but it was only raining. We may head out here again if the weather's right. I appreciated the fact that the bathroom amenities included single use make up remover towelettes. It's a small thing to rave about but I was really glad that it was in the basket of bathroom goodies. I had forgotten to bring my own. Our hosts, Dawn and Ed, were very nice too. My boyfriend and I had a great conversation with Dawn after breakfast. She had many stories and experiences to share. I'm a shy person but Dawn made it easy to carry the conversation. We had stumbled on the topic of wine tasting and she shared her experiences and even suggested a few places to visit. Breakfast was amazing. We ate poached pear in caramel cinnamon sauce(I forget exactly ) and a stuffed frittata topped with a sweet tomato jelly and sausage on the side. It was truly delicious. My wife and I stayed here as a Fathers' day getaway. We stayed in the Apple Sweet room. It was great! First of all, Dawn and Ed (the proprieters) were very accomodating since we called in the morning and were able to rent the room that night. The room was charming and very clean. Despite the house being 70+ years old, the room was very well maintained and fresh. The morning breakfast is served family-style as you sit with the other guests at a large table. The breakfast is made by Dawn and Ed and is both tasty as well as beautiful. All in all, highly recommended. Our only regret is not staying longer. read more

My husband surprised me with a trip to Julian. He chose this cute B&B. It really is the best B&B I have ever stayed in. The room was cozy and comfortable. We had a fireplace in our room the Apple Sweet, and they provided firewood. They have made an atmosphere that makes you feel welcome and wanting to return. On our last retreat my wife and I wanted to spend it at a bed and breakfast. So last weekend we stayed at the Butterfied B&B. We had never stayed at a B&B before. We had a marvelous experience here. I took my boyfriend here for our anniversary. It was just beautiful. We stayed in the rose bud cottage. It was just so cute and cozy. We stayed in the Apple Sweet. And boy was it a sweet surprise. The fireplace is a must for the winter season. Owners Ed and Dawn were the perfect host. The property is decorated with country items everywhere. My husband had roses waiting in the room for me and a horse and carriage ride into the town for dinner on the second night. We stayed in the Sanza Italia room and it was amazing. Ed and Dawn are the sweetest hosts I've ever met. It's just outside of the main part of town so you won't have to deal with any crowds. The room was wonderful. I wish we spent more time in the main common area, it looked like a lot of fun. Dawn's breakfasts are delicious and healthy. You feel like you're in someone's home rather than a hotel or motel. Thanks so much for the stay, Ed and Dawn. We'll be back soon with the whole family. read more

We truly enjoyed our visit to Butterfield B&B. When ever we're traveling we make a point of staying at B&B's, so we've seen our share of good and bad. Ed and Dawn really run a first class inn. Our room had a fireplace which was going every night and the bed was very cozy. The breakfast was delicious and we are already planning our next stay. read more
