I waited a month+ to write the honest review of Oak Hill Inn. It's unfortunate that I booked the carriage house with air b+ b . This booking was for a 3 night stay / it was a little under $500. Upon arrival: extremely unsafe stair case / unfinished hand rails (splinters) are tough. I would NOT book this space if you have knee, hip, or back issues. The room has a bar sink .. but there was no soap to wash glasses/ simple stuff. That was sort of disappointing. The bathroom had no soap in the old school hand dispenser...even the oil diffuser was dry, y'all... The bed was so uncomfortable-so broken in, we kept rolling to the middle of it! The shower had obvious signs of grout mold... the first night we were there, the other neighbors asked ME if it was okay for them to smoke weed! They were super loud and went in and out all night. That's fine. I didn't even mind that. If you book this spot, it's like a duplex. Our second night there we left $20 in the "honor bar" that Laura has on the property. At that time she came in/ introduced herself. I told her how much we were loving our stay & she said thank you, that's what they try to do. When we left the Oak Hill Inn we cleaned it + left it better than we found it. We left Laura another $20 on the table in our room... As an FDR & EMB I take reviews very seriously. When we left this place Laura, the host, wrote that me and my partner, Maggie, were not a good fit for Oak Hill Inn. Huh?!! But I guess my extra $40 were! I'n from the imperial valley + spent so much time with my family in Juilan all of my life growing up. I would def not stay here, spend the extra $100 for peace at the Julian hotel or the lodge. Our stay was utterly terrible. It was evident that they did not clean up after the previous guests. We even found a small plastic dime bag left behind with some stuff in it. There was no cleaning effort. The conditions were so gross that we had to check out early. When we called the owner, she was incredibly rude and dismissive of everything we said. She didn't seem to care about the state of the place. We even offered to send her photos and videos of the dirty areas, but she hung up on us. She refused to help us resolve the issue and wouldn't make it right, even after we had to check out after our first night because of her lack of preparation for guests. The state of the room now makes sense after speaking with such a poor manager. I would give zero stars if that were an option. read more

Spent Mother's Day weekend here with my wife, room#1. Arrived after dark and was greeted with a beautiful scene from the street. Yes there are stairs so if your immobile this would not work for you. The room was clean and rustic with a romantic getaway type of feel. The private patio was perfect for a morning cup of coffee before venturing out for the day. Nice and quiet and NOT the city. The nights were beautiful and dark, yes you can here vehicles from the street sometimes yea there are bugs sometimes yes the stairs can be a pain in the ass and the bed was a little uncomfortable for a bigger man like myself BUT I would definitely stay here again anytime I'm visiting Julian. It's not in downtown so your away from the crowded Main Street so you feel secluded but a short 5 min walk and your in the heart of Julian. 5 stars in my book. If your a high maintenance 5 star resort type of person then look elsewhere but if your a down to earth simple person who appreciates simple,clean nice places then this is the place to check out! read more

The owners are terrible bigots. My fiancé and I stayed there for one night and were kicked out using the sheriffs department for being disabled and having ADA, federally protected service dogs with us. They did not want to see the licenses of the service animals, it was demanded that we leave immediately at midnight. It was freezing cold outside. We had nowhere to go. When we explained that this was the case, they called the sheriffs department and use the sheriffs department to harass us for hours. We received phone calls and texts from them relentlessly telling us to leave, they promised us a full refund for leaving but when we left the next day, (one day early having not slept due to their harassment, they just kept our money. They are people of no integrity for stealing our money. They are heartless people for not honoring disabled people's needs. They should not be in business anywhere let alone a cute little town like Julian. Shame on them. read more

I planned and paid for 3 nights at Oak Hill Inn starting Aug 13 2021 When I arrived with my service dog we were turned away to be told "pets are not permitted" I explained to the owner that my dog was a service animal and not a "pet" She "Laura" and a man I assumed to be her partner again told me that no pets were allowed as perhaps a next guest might be allergic. I told him that a guest could be allergic to their cleaning products as well, but he could not see that as a valid possibility , just to note. We are also in the middle of the Covid pandemic and rooms should be prepared and cleaned with a particular enhanced level of sanitizing as well According to the law as defined by Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) services animals are permitted where ever their disabled owners go as a necessary assistance to them. They are not pets, and nor they are not emotional support animals. The owner of this inn is either ignorant of the law, or chooses not to follow its protections She DISCRIMINATED against me and as such violated my CIVIL RIGHTS. This is patently unacceptable. So on the evening of Aug 13, 2021 we were left stranded and standing on the street-2 senior women and my small service dog. Later, Laura called me and stated that she had found someone in town who would watch my dog, again demonstrating ignorance of the function and allowance under law of a service animal. If you are disabled, or know someone who is disabled please take your money and stay elsewhere. There is no reason to patronize a business or business owner who callously and ignorantly discriminates against disabled and elderly individuals We stood on the street facing the very real fear that we would be sleeping in the car. read more

My fiance and I just stayed at the Oak Hill Inn this weekend and we're so happy that we chose it for our lodging. We were seeking a quiet and relaxing place for a weekend getaway from the hustle and bustle of San Diego, and the Oak Hill Inn turned out to be a perfect fit. What we loved: Our poolside room was the perfect size for us and gave us tons of privacy to enjoy the pool and patio area. The weather was just warm enough for us to utilize the pool so after some quick maintenance with the pool skimmer, we jumped in and enjoyed. The room is cutely decorated with a "stove heater" that kept us warm and cozy. We found the bed to be comfortable, but we are SO glad we brought 2 of our pillows from home (see more below). The coffee maker, mini fridge and kitchen tools were perfect for our needs. Parking was convenient, and we loved being able to walk into town in under 10 minutes. Suggestions for improvement: When I made the reservation over the phone with Bill, I asked him to please email me some kind of confirmation or receipt for the payment. He said that's something he doesn't do, it's "not really his style." I personally found that a little disconcerting and unusual because this is clearly a business that has the ability to send a simple e-mail confirmation (they have multiple listings on AirBnB and their own website). I tried to call the Inn at 5:30 pm when we were leaving town to get a final confirmation about arrival instructions, parking, etc. but nobody answered the phone. That being said, without a firm confirmation or check-in instructions, I wasn't 100% confident about our stay until we arrived on Friday evening and found a note telling us how to find the room! I also highly recommend they upgrade the pillows (they are basically mush), or guests should plan to bring their own to supplement. We enjoyed the pool but the hot tub clearly wasn't "open" - we would have liked to check it out too. We didn't see the proprietors at any point during the weekend so I couldn't share this feedback with them directly. Overall we had an awesome time here and I recommend it to other couples who are seeking a very relaxed, rustic getaway spot. read more

The small town is very cute and "country like." Great for a very private quiet getaway without much expectation. Walking distance to town was cute and it was nice being able to see all their homemade shops. I was hoping to swim but the pool was disgusting and had insects swimming in it, yes IN it. No thanks. I feel I should refrain from giving too much detail, because I'm sure the hosts are incredible people. However, I believe we booked this Airbnb at a bad time. We were so eager to arrive and wanted to love this Airbnb, but were very disappointed. Check-in was a breeze, and we were initially so excited. The inside of the room was quaint and cute, and definitely had a mountain feel. We were quickly bummed to find our coffee maker would not work, despite how much water we put into it. The raving reviews about goodies in the fridge and the comfort of the environment were something we were looking forward to, but never found. The ambiance was there, but a lot of stuff was not as expected. Our bed (in room #2) was truly the most uncomfortable spring mattress we have ever slept on, and we are two incredibly low-maintenance individuals who aren't normally picky at ALL. I personally had to lodge a pillow underneath my hips in order to sleep for 2 straight hours through the night. There were two pathways you could take to get to these separate rooms, and the more convenient one was obstructed by tons of weeds, and a long and lengthy Pyracantha branch (if you know this shrub, you know it has inch-long thorns). Most importantly, we booked this specific Airbnb for the pool. That was our main priority as I surprised my fiancé with this birthday weekend trip, and he absolutely loves swimming. We were incredibly disappointed to see how filthy the pool was. There was a layer of debris and insects covering the top of the pool, plus the grout was very mucky. We were so bummed to not use the pool, and 4 other parties stayed there during the duration of our stay, and none of them swam, either! Overall, I want to give the hosts the benefit of the doubt, because obviously others have had raving things to say about the hosts and their stay, but this place was not as expected. We are really hoping we came at an unfortunate time and that others continue to enjoy it, but we truly did not. The highlight of the stay was the AC that kept the room comfortable, no matter the outside elements. Also, we oddly could not connect to WiFi in the common area, but did somehow reach it from our room in the corner, so I suppose this would be a positive note. We appreciated a safe place to stay for two nights, but would not recommend this place to others, simply based off our stay as a whole. read more

Super-sweet Julian-getaway spot! 'Innkeeper' Gina takes care of all communications and reservations, and her father (an engineer) built the house, which is SO charming and picturesque; totally like a postcard. They have 3 rooms available to rent, pretty much at the level of the swimming pool (which itself is another reason to visit on warm spring and summer days; completely tiled with charming images of turtles, fish and a giant whale). I rented all 3 rooms for myself and my mom and sister and 11-year-old-nephew (the rates are very reasonable, and we also had the 'common room' aka 'the pub' to enjoy for all our meals and poolside-cocktail-hour). The house is secluded but just a block from Julian main street, and we also took very easy drives down to nearby Santa Ysabel + a whole bunch of local hiking trails. read more

My boyfriend and I visited Julian during MLK weekend and really enjoyed our stay here. True, it's no 5-star resort or modern hotel but it was great! Every night when we headed back to the room, it felt as if we were going home rather than to some building. The staff was very friendly, the room was very clean and tidy, and the price was reasonable. The mini fridge was stocked with yogurt and orange juice and we also had an entire loaf of bread. Again, this may not sounds like 5-star dining but it's more than what many hotels offer without charging extra! The only bummer was that we couldn't try out the pool--but that's because we went in the middle of January. Will definitely be making a trip back (hopefully in the summer) and will stay here again! it was also very conveniently located and there is very convenient parking on both sides. read more

The jacuzzi wasn't full during our stay, but we were there during a storm, so it wouldn't have been a good idea anyway! The rooms are clean, and the hosts are helpful and friendly! Absolutely appalling treatment. Beware that the owners are complete drunks. We were lied to about the condition of the property and the pool. It was already alarming when we drove down the driveway to find a folded, putrid mattress outside the house that looked like it had been through months of rainstorms, but to be followed around the whole night was even more scary. When we originally were greeted she was obviously drunk but we shrugged it off as best we could. She had us follow her around the property to show us all the other rooms that we could have paid more for, yet we were the only guests. We were told the pool was 81 degrees but was measured at 69. They offered to turn the jacuzzi on but said it would take 5 hours, which was fine since we wanted to visit the town. They became even more irrational when we asked when it would be on. Maybe they forgot. The owner got so threatening I ran up to a well known, and trusted establishment and booked a different room so we didn't feel threatened. I warn everyone to stay away from this crazy lady. It is not worth your safety. There are many places to stay in Julian that she talked down on, but others place health, Covid, and fresh breakfast on your to-do list. Don't risk this. I wish I hadn't. Best wishes. read more

Such a cute clean hotel!! The beds were comfy and everything seemed really great. Very cozy feeling and very nicely decorated. It's also pretty close to the main town so we just walked to dinner instead of worried about parking anywhere. Had a wonderful time here with my friends. Some of the rooms have their own personal patio areas and such. Our room also had a lot of windows which let a lot of inviting light inside. Very comfortable, private bed and breakfast style lodging in a great location a short walk from Julian's main drag. A full breakfast is not included, but a stay does come with two tasty blueberry muffins (plus coffee). The host is an exceptionally friendly and helpful Wisconsin native named Bill. He must have brought some Midwestern hospitality with him to the west coast, because we felt very welcome as guests. I would/will definitely stay here again. I took the kids and grandma for an overnight stay. It wasn't too hard to find. It's off of Coleman Circle just south of Main Street in Julian, very close, you can walk to town. You can park on Sunset View to check in to the main house (office) and later, park on Coleman Circle. Warning: there are lots of stairs, so if you are disabled, this may not be the place for you. Bill (the owner) was friendly enough. I think he could've given more general info upon check-in, such as restaurants that stay open for dinner, special hours (we stayed on a Tuesday so some shops were closed), etc. On the phone, I was told there was wi-fi in the main house, but I was never in the main house except at check-in/out, so it wasn't useful to me. The room we stayed in is one of two in a separate little bungalow. We stayed in #2. It was quaint and decorated country-style. It had a mini-fridge, ac, electric fan, cable TV, coffee maker, plates, spoons, mugs. Note: no microwave. They gave us one key, a complimentary loaf of Dudley's bread (maple pecan - yum!), two orange juice bottles, two yogurts, butter, jelly. Bill said he could give us more juices for the kids if we needed. They have a nice pool 3 ft-7 ft deep and spa 3 ft deep. The pool has a little waterfall, bridge, and mosaic tile decoration inside. Bill could tell we were going to use, so he quickly scooped all the leaves and turned on the spa for us. The water was cold but refreshing. However, we didn't stay long enough to find out how warm the spa got. The shower was perfect. Easy to use, warmed up quickly, great flow, very soothing and massaging. Toilet bowl had some yellowing inside, but it worked well. At night, the crickets were so loud outside, but the room walls drowned it out very nicely. There was only one queen bed so we brought a queen airbed for the kids. There was just enough room on the carpeted floor for it, and they were fine. The bed was great, no complaints. The place could use a wall clock or alarm clock. I did like how it had plenty of outlets for charging our devices, blow dryer, etc. I would stay there again. Thank you! read more

We spent two very nice nights here this spring. I read through some of the other reviews - folks should understand what this cool little place is / isn't before coming: What it isn't: This isn't a hotel - it's the owner's house (that they built!), turned into an inn - with some rooms in the main house, and some in a detached building. There's no elevator, so be ready to carry your bags up / down some stairs. There isn't any room service, valet, pool boy, bartender, or continually staffed front desk, OK? What it is: A quiet, clean, comfortable, and competitively priced (we paid $145/night, including tax) inn. It's about 2 blocks from the downtown area - you don't even need to drive to go to the local restaurants and shops. We were on the side that faced the main road in Julian - it was still very quiet. You're sort of in a semi-rural setting (yes, you can hear the local rooster in the morning, why would anyone object?), there are turkeys in the local field you'll see as you walk the short distance to downtown, etc. The town itself is calm, yet really fun - lots of nice places to check out. Come and give this place a try - we were very happy with our stay. read more

We had an amazing experience at the Oak Hill Inn! We were in Julian for a wedding, but had some down time before hand. It was a hot day, and we definitely took advantage of their amazing pool and "Tavern" which offers drinks and snacks for a donation. Our hosts were welcoming and attentive. They even snuck an umbrella onto our door when there was a highly unusual summer rainstorm. The room was cute, air conditioned (big plus), and well appointed with a nice little refrigerator and Keurig for coffee. We stayed in Unit 1, which has a lovely shaded patio - perfect for a quiet morning sipping coffee and reading. Not only this, but they were very helpful in recovering our forgotten phone charger (oops, may have been slightly hungover). We certainly plan to stay here again when we are back in town! read more

This is my first time spending vacation up in Julian and it was most memorable. The innkeeper Gina was very sweet and considerate to my needs. The inn itself was very impressive. I loved my room, the swimming pool, and the atmosphere. No need to take a car into town, literally it was a five minute walk. The place was clean and when I checked out, I left it clean. The big plus was the public transportation. Someone drove me up and I left catching the city transit which is located downtown Julian. This was seriously the best hotel/inn I've stayed at. The room was wonderful and had everything you need! There was a mini fridge, plates and silverware, a Kuerig! There was a beautiful, shady private patio/balcony. Even though it's just off the highway, it was still peaceful and quiet and beautiful. We didn't try the pool because we didn't bring swimsuits but it was beautiful and perhaps a little whimsical. The property itself was lovely too! Tons of flowers, nice cottage and home-y type decorations. Bill & Magda, the property owners were super friendly and welcoming. Not sure why this place gets such great reviews. SERIOUSLY disappointed. There is no parking, steps down to room are dangerous and poorly marked. TINY window air conditioner is a joke, and because there is no screen, I can't leave the slider open. Add the road noise from cars, motorcycles, etc and the bed is a marshmallow. Wishing I had stayed home about now. Oh, and the ROOSTER crowing from an adjoining property is the icing on the cake. Pictures of this property are SERIOUSLY OVER RATED. read more

Oak Hill Inn is so charming, my husband and I really enjoyed our stay. Our stay began with a grand tour from Bill, the owner. He gave us great restaurant recommendations and showed us our rooms and the common areas. Our room had a mini fridge and Keurig but the common room has a full size fridge and microwave to use as well. The bed was very comfortable and the linens were soft and cozy. I've never stayed at an inn or B&B type of place before but we were very happy and comfortable here. Among the most reasonably priced places in Julian, Oak Hill offers what are essentially efficiency apartments that are cozy and comfortable and a very short walk into town. The kitchenette was stocked with juice, yogurt, breads, and condiments. Tea and coffee are also plentiful, and any dishes or utensils you would need are available. The rooms are simple but well appointed. The short distance from the center of Julian makes for a much more peaceful setting. So, price, location, amenities...A great find! read more

What a great place!! We stayed here 7/31/15-8/2/15 and loved it!! Beautiful house, very nice owner. They even have a little kitchen/dining place, which you can utilize. This place is ABSOLUTELY PERFECT. From the hand built Inn, The Inn Keepers, the Ambiance to the quiet, peaceful tiny town placement. The price is right, for such a quaint place. Walking to town was a breeze. There is a rooster at the neighboring house that was perfect early morning wake up to get the day started and to not miss the opening of the town. Do NOT expect High Class Hilton life, cause if you do this place is not for you. Not a snobby place. Expect spiders, ants and other creepy crawlers because YES you are in the Mountains. Yes expect cute little pathways to the rooms, Yes it is a Hard work, hand built home tha Bill and his wife built with lots of love and thoughtful design and its perfect. The pool area is cute, and will put a smile on your face. Hand tiled pool has so much character. I have found my new hide away here at the Inn. Very comfy, low key inn. The best part was the giant muffins left in the room ("continental breakfast") and that it's so tucked away. We literally didn't see anyone else our entire stay, from the time we checked in with the caretaker, from the time we checked out 2 days later (by leaving our keys in the door). It's a sleepy town that closes early (we went on a night hike one night), so bring books! One thing I would have liked is if there was something more in the common room like board games, puzzles, books (that people can take and leave), etc. read more

It's listed as a B&B, there's no breakfast, just a coffeemaker, and that didn't work, and a small fridge! We have seen other comments on the coffee makers not working, I left a note by the coffeemaker but it seems like the guest comments are ignored! No microwave, just in the common area, there is a fridge and freezer for guest's use also in the common area, but the freezer was dirty. Beds were awful, lots of bugs and spiders in the room and bed! We understand it's in the woods, but it looks like they never spray for bugs at all. Met owners once, when you leave, you just leave your key in the door. If the owners are not at home when you arrive, there's a note on the front door telling you which room you're in and that your key is in your room door. Odd, no registration whatsoever. Never saw any staff the whole visit. Not worth what we paid per night. Lots of very unsafe stairs, not a place for seniors. No grab bar to get into tub. No storage in bathroom, had to put curling iron, cosmetics etc. on floor. Some of the outlets didn't work in the room. They advertise free Wifi, but not in the rooms, only in the common area, this was not clear in the description. Our bed (in room #1) was truly the most uncomfortable spring mattress we have ever slept on, and the pillows are flat as a pancake! We are not pool people but the pool was filthy! There was a layer of debris and insects covering the top of the pool, plus the grout was very mucky. The room was neat and simple, alot of stuff in a room can collect bugs, so I like a room that doesn't have alot of deco. I wanted the room with the brick decor which I thought was prettier but someone else had it, which is fine, as we did get our reservation a bit last minute. One thing I can say is...OUR ROOM WAS SPOTLESS. They take alot of care in their establishment. And because we saved on lodging we got to spend more in town...so it worked out great.
