A complaint has been filed with the US Department of Justice as Nan has openly discriminated…read moreagainst my husband for having to have a hearing service dog and used wildlife specifically deer around the cabin as an excuse to charge us a lot more to stay in the larger "pet friendly" artist loft instead of the smaller 2 person cozy cabin at Strawberry Hill we requested. It's against the ADA requirements- Q. Can hotels assign designated rooms for guests with service animals? A. No. A guest with a disability who uses a service animal must be provided the same opportunity to reserve any available room as other guests without disabilities. They may not be restricted to "pet-friendly" rooms. As for her flimsy excuse about the wildlife even though I assured her we follow the service dog rules of bathing her before trips and keeping her on a close leash. She never has barked EVER. We have never heard her voice! She was trained to not chase or even look at other animals she turns away. She is a well trained service dog from two well know legitimate organizations and is licensed. Even though by law we don't have to show her I offered to show Nan the CA service dog license and her training paperwork and card my husband carries showing who trained her and that she is allowed in ambulances and hospitals too. I explained all the tasks that she does to help my husband with his hearing loss and explained why we wouldn't allow her to ever be close to wildlife for her safety too. All in all Nan went on and on about how she had to close off the cabins before and after the dates because of covid and aerosols and the cost of insurance, the cost of doing business so it appears as if she used the excuse of wildlife and bad past experiences with people lying about pets being service animals to make us pay more by booking the larger pet friendly cabin. I kept saying my husband's service dog is not a pet and she wouldn't listen. 27 minutes on the phone I listened to her discriminate against my husband before asking one more time if since she was insisting we stay in the large pet cabin with the 3 beds we don't need could she at least just charge us the cost of the strawberry cabin since we aren't supposed to be penalized with increased charges because of my husband's disability and she said No. So I finally said well I'm going to report you and hung up. I did double check just in case there was a change in the last few weeks but there wasn't. I called the CA state park in Julian and spoke with the ranger which is the same wildlife, same forest as Nans property and they assured me that service dogs are still allowed in cabins there AND even on trails. He assured me that my husband's service dog would not interfere with the deer under her cabin at all!!! That the people staying in the cabins and even her 6 cats roaming the property could interfere more. Her excuse was a flimsy way to try to extort more money out of us. Maybe someone who was trying to pass a pet off as a service dog would have been fine with this since she does have no pets on her listings BUT a legitimate well trained service dog is NOT a pet and we know the law and we are proud of the amazing job the dog does that is potentially life saving. It's sad we are missing out what appears to be a cute cabin but I'm glad we aren't monetarily supporting disabled discrimination.

The hosts, Chuck and Nan, live close by, and make themselves available, but are not doting. They have carefully crafted this cabin, a true labor of love, to be enjoyed by guests. Less than ten minutes to town, but you feel like you're out in the country, away from everything. Stellar A+ views, comfortable furnishings, a wood-burning stove as the centerpiece, with all the amenities for cooking, relaxing, and simply embracing the sense of wonder for creation and nature. There's a pond below but it's not accessible, probably because they've got bulls. Or because they don't want randos messing with their animals. The house slopes, so it's a bit like walking on a ship. If this kind of thing bothers you I wouldn't rent this cabin. However I barely noticed it after the first hour or so. In the kitchen, make sure to bring your cooking essentials, including any oils you need. They did have salt & pepper. No D/W. I really liked the bathroom off the main bedroom. With high ceilings and wood beams, it was very pretty. Bring your own hairdryer (the one provided was ancient) and toiletries (they were out of either shampoo or conditioner). The place is fairly private. You can see the front of the gnome house out of the main bedroom window and the living room. The lights along the path to the gnome house are solar, I believe, and create quite a bit of light into the main bedroom at night. Town would be quite a hike; car needed. It is super quiet.

Warm, friendly and filled with recommendations on where to eat ( dinner- and of course APPLE PIE!) We all agreed (we were traveling with others) that we would like to come and stay again. Yeah, the heat of summer is nuts, as expected, but we came prepared and the salt water pool is open to swim and cool off. They have a firepit with wood provided, a BBQ grill and two patios to take in those 360 degree views. The rooms are cool and clean with microwave, fridge and coffee pot plus all the amenities we needed - and if we ran out they have a courtesy cabinet to ensure you can get more. They are renewable energy powered and even have a spot to charge your electric vehicle. Robin is a cool lady and very friendly and has this perfect way of giving you your privacy but always being available. We will be back!

We just wrapped up our three-night stay here and couldn't be happier…read more We stayed here once before, maybe 3-4 years ago, and the wonderful owners we met no longer live on property: in their place is the on-site manager, Robin (though the actual ownership of the motel remains the same, as we understand it). She was totally friendly, accommodating, and helpful: a total plus to our experience! Now to the motel itself. For those unfamiliar, it's a very small property with just eight (!) rooms. Its bones are old but it's been renovated and treated with care. The rooms are exceptionally CLEAN and have what you need to enjoy Borrego Springs. I personally found the memory foams bed extremely comfortable. I like a firmer bed but at the same time I think even those with different preferences would still find it agreeably comfy. The rooms have a coffee maker, small toaster oven, microwave, mini fridge, ceiling fan, heater, and air conditioner...as far as appliances go. Everything we used (unused: a/c and coffee maker) worked well! The rooms also have two nightstands, two reading lamps, a small table with two chairs, a closet "nook" to hang clothes, and a full bathroom (only shower, no tub). The shower comes equipped with pre-filled shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner dispensers. As you've probably guessed, no furniture with drawers, but not an issue as there is ample space in the room itself to spread things out, lay out suitcases, etc. The pool is a good size, especially considering how small the complex is, and goes all the way to 8ft! The open air pool area proved a wonderful place to lounge and just enjoy the desert air even if one has no interest in taking a dip. Also great for stargazing at night! Each room also has an additional table and two chairs just outside the door to allow for sitting outside and stargazing. Be aware that there is no wi-fi, television, or hotel room phones (who uses that last one for anything anymore....ever?). If you desperately need wi-fi for something you can just park outside the library (a half-mile away) and do what you need to do with theirs. Many locals told us it's free and fast. Personally got along just fine without any of the three amenities above! Honestly if a hotel lacking a TV is a deal-breaker that says much more about the person than it does the property, just saying! One more thing, you will love the key code entry. Robin will give you a unique code that opens your door that's impossible to forget (you'll see why when you get it) - such an easy and secure system - no more fumbling for some dumb key, and for once you can literally leave everything you don't need at the pool in the hotel room! The rates are excellent, and this motel has it where it counts (cleanliness, service, and specific amenities that add to your stay) - again, this is what every motel should strive to be. They're focused on what you need and they meet those needs well. We personally see no need for us to entertain any other motel/hotel in Borrego Springs - why put effort towards searching for a ruby when you've found your diamond?

The shower had obvious signs of grout mold... the first night we were there, the other neighbors asked ME if it was okay for them to smoke weed! They were super loud and went in and out all night. That's fine. I didn't even mind that. If you book this spot, it's like a duplex. Our second night there we left $20 in the "honor bar" that Laura has on the property. At that time she came in/ introduced herself. I told her how much we were loving our stay & she said thank you, that's what they try to do. When we left the Oak Hill Inn we cleaned it + left it better than we found it. We left Laura another $20 on the table in our room... As an FDR & EMB I take reviews very seriously. When we left this place Laura, the host, wrote that me and my partner, Maggie, were not a good fit for Oak Hill Inn. Huh?!! But I guess my extra $40 were! I'n from the imperial valley + spent so much time with my family in Juilan all of my life growing up. I would def not stay here, spend the extra $100 for peace at the Julian hotel or the lodge. Chuck and Nan greeted us and are terrific hosts and I'm sad I didn't get to spend a little more time with them. They have traveled the world and the cabin shows it. My boys and I belief that the deer and maybe even the wild turkeys are on Chuck and Nan 's payroll ....and they are cued to stand on the side as you drive in the neighborhood and are in the garden in the morning!!!
