Tucker Peak Lodge will be one of those places people will either love or hate. It's nestled up on a hill with surrounding trees and has a large expansive deck with chairs to enjoy the outdoor air. The lodge appears to have been a large house at one time, that possibly served as a B&B, but now it is a lodge. Depending on our background, you could find this as an enchanting getaway with romantic quaint rooms. A young couple might find Tucker Peak very charming and exciting. The price to stay overnight, is pretty competitive for the area. An order couple, might perhaps see the world differently with all their experience and instead pay attention to everything imperfect. A board out of place, smaller rooms, etc. I stayed overnight and overall I enjoyed my stay. I thought it was a fun one night experience, away from everything. Driving up the somewhat private road to Tucker Peak Lodge, it is easy to pass the sharp left turn (I did and backed up a bit). A sharp incline winds up to the driveway in front of the Lodge. I honestly was a bit confused about the parking situation. There was a truck parked backwards in the driveway. I stopped, examined the area and came to the conclusion that indeed the other spot on the drive way was marked "2" and was guest parking. I backed into that spot on the top of the driveway. After getting out I could barely make out the head in parking spaces a little lower down the driveway. It looked like another 3 or 4, but I think the guest parking needs signs and more thicker white lines indicating where to park. Walking up past the driveway, I noticed a sign that said "guest check in." I following the sign direction and noticed a door open at the top of some steps. I was embarrassed to find that the maid services was attending to one of the rooms and they directed my further down to the main Living Room where the "check in " was located. I expected a person to be there, but looking up at the wall in the entrance was a sign that was titled "Self-Check In." No one else was there, so I signed the guestbook and found my name with a key hanging on the wall in front of the short desk. I guess it was easy enough, but again the process didn't seem clear to me either. Walking into the "Rosewood" room, we found it to be very charming. Everything was arranged nicely. The shower and bathroom were clean and looked to have been recently remodeled. The plank flooring made it perfect for our stay with our little 6 lb Yorkie. I felt a bit claustrophobic at times, but that's probably me. The bathroom had swinging saloon style doors that made me a bit uncomfortable and self-conscious when using the bathroom. As I said early, a younger couple could find this really fun. It just wasn't my thing I guess. The room had a nice small refrigerator and was stocked with K-cups to make coffee along with the amenities. There were also more in the main kitchen. If you like to make your own meals, the place has a pretty nice common kitchen area for preparing your food. The common Living Room had a beautiful staircase and stone fireplace. Big large comfortable furniture was available for your leisure. Some of the rooms were located inside the main house on the second floor above the Living Room. If you like a lot of privacy these rooms might not be your thing. I found Tucker Peak Lodge to be the imperfect fun getaway experience. I did enjoy my stay and was glad I visited.

Got the the place okay. Great amenities. Had an issue with a lock code but talked to the owners and got it straightened out. There were cute kittens on the property as well that were very friendly!

Grand Studio Suite Picture

Terrible terrible management and customer service. We have booked our room, "Grand Studio Suite" through hotels.com TWO MONTHS ahead before our stay. However, upon arrival, we were given a COMPLETELY different room with different beds and bathroom. My husband initially reached out to Jamal, the manager and he said that they have no control over it and that we must reach out to hotels.com for a refund. So we did and the hotels.com representative called the Tuckers Peak Lodge manager to talk over the fact and told us that he DENIED our request for a refund. Why recommend us to contact hotels.com if he was going to deny it? So I emailed Jamal again to seek further assistance. (because he didn't answer the phone calls multiple times that we tried) There was no apologies, no sign of concern, but just telling me that there has never been such instances like this and that only full refund will be given if the room were to be rented out to someone else. That was 7:36PM. No ones going to rent a hotel on a Sunday evening at that time. Or the chance is VERY slight. I sent another reply with pictures of our initial booking and the room that we actually got and how misleading it is and that it is a false advertisement and he just stopped responding. So here I am. Very disappointed. I was charged $207.58 for a room that was NOT the room that I booked and that I did NOT stay in. I am just posting hoping to prevent another person from a similar experience. I just filed a Consumer Complaint and waiting to hear back. All I wanted was for the manager to understand the problem and help by giving us a full refund, but I guess that was too much to ask. I will not ever stay here and don't recommend it to anyone else. P.S. The room had some weird smell and I am honestly glad I didn't stay.

Although I would've enjoyed my experience otherwise, this racist picture of Black children in my room was something I couldn't ignore. I hope they get rid of it, but I'm confused why they thought it was alright to put it up in the first place. https://jimcrowmuseum.ferris.edu/antiblack/picaninny/homepage.htm

I was very disappointed with this lodge. The first night there was a very strong perfume smell and the electricity was out for about an hour. The manager came to my room and seemed put out by my complaint. I tried to cancel the next night but the scheduler never returned my call, email, or text. My impression was that if he ignored the problem it would go away. It worked. I stayed the second night and the room had a strong smell of wet dogs. I was charged full price. The manager didn't try to satisfy me in any way which I felt they should have at least given me a discount for both nights. If you are a younger crowd with pets, this may be a good place for you. If you have allergies, it is not. I forgot to mention that there were dog hairs, pubic hair, and black spots on the bedding. It was gross.

Our lovely room. Stuffed animals already in place.

Took my boys here to enjoy Julian for the first time. We had a great stay although I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who wants total privacy and quiet. You share a kitchen, living room and deck with the other guests and I know they could probably hear my kids when they were playing Jenga or pool in the living room. That being said, if you are a friendly person, it could be a nice way to run into others on vacation. I had a great chat with the innkeeper and a couple out from Scotland. There is a huge deck with lots of chairs and a stunning view. I got some wine just so I could enjoy a glass out there! The room was very sweet and the sheets were soft as could be. A couple minor things, one squeaky bed, broken electric fireplace and a crazed shower head, but all manageable. There is a wonderfully friendly cat that my kids fell in love with and she must have with them. We opened our window and next thing we know she is meowing at our second floor window wanting to join us. Really nice stay.

When I was planning a quick girls getaway for my friend's birthday I found the town of Julian which I have never heard of. And during my research I discovered this lodge online and booked it for one evening and I am so happy I did. We drove up after work so arrived later in the evening and all three of us wish we had more time to stay in this lovely place. First off, it is so peaceful and at night you can see all the stars in the sky. When you first enter the lodge you see a living room with a small game area to the right and to the left is a dining room and a kitchen. Up the stairs were 3 rooms. Ours was the Harmony Room and it had two queen beds, a bathroom with plenty of towels, and an electric fireplace. The beds were so comfortable. Since it was late when we arrived the innkeeper Craigly told my friend we were free to use the kitchen and anything in it. We had a cake for my friend so we sat around the dining table eating cake and drinking hot chocolate (made from the Keurig in the kitchen). The next morning we woke up bright and early and sat outside on the deck sipping coffee. We met a couple of other fellow travelers and swapped recommendations on what to do for the day. For a city girl, I thoroughly enjoyed waking up to the sounds of birds and not to cars honking. It was so tranquil sitting outdoors enjoying nature. The reason I didn't give this place 5 stars - - with 3 girls staying in the room I wished there was a mirror hanging outside the bathroom - the shower door also didn't close all the way This lodge has a lot of potential for 5 stars. I think it would be a perfect bed and breakfast and offering breakfast would make the experience even better. The drive to Julian from L.A is about 3 hours long and there are a lot of winding roads so be very careful when driving at night. Once you turn onto Eagle Peak Road slow down or you will miss the entrance up the hill to the lodge. Parking is limited because there are just a few rooms in the lodge.

Old Blood stain on pillow

The staff were very nice. The price was good, but I understand why, please see below. The grounds need serious cleaning of debris, garbage, general cleanup. There was trash on the deck that should have been picked up. A chainsaw was left out overnight creating a hazard for children. Fortunately there were no kids at this time. The building and decks need painting. In our room the wood flooring was lifting up, there are holes in the walls that should be patched not covered up by decorations. We had to move the wall decoration to find a light wall switch. My pillow had old blood stains. The garage looks like a hoarding issue, with a room above this is a serious fire hazard. There is wood stacked next to the garage with two gasoline cans sitting on top of it. The broken down car should be removed as well as the debris, this would allow for more parking. The building and location has the potential to be a 4-5 star resort if attention were paid to maintenance and general cleanup.

The only thing good about this place was the scenery. Even before arriving, I'd had a lot of trouble reaching someone at the hotel to modify my reservation, shortening it from two nights to one and adding a late check out. But when my card was charged, not only was I charged for both nights, but I was charged for both an early check in and a late check out. Honestly, though, I'm relieved I didn't stay a second night. Upon arrival, it was clear why I was having so much trouble getting a hold of someone - there's no staff on site! I was planning to ask someone about the incorrect charge, but there was no one to be found at any point during our stay. The room was nice, albeit small, but the bathroom had no door! Just saloon doors! So if you're staying there with another person, brace yourself for that. Also, a part of the molding along the floor had broken off and there were just a bunch of exposed nails. Not ideal! Probably the worst part was that there were *multiple* stains on our bedding, one of them clearly a blood stain accompanied by a pubic hair. And again, with no staff on site, it was a whole process to get someone to come replace the bedding. Clean linens are truly one of the most basic things a hotel should have, and for the bedding to be so obviously stained was really disgusting. Long story short, if you're looking to stay in Julian, spend a few extra dollars and stay elsewhere.

We arrived late on a Wednesday night just before a big snow, and it was the easiest check in experience we have ever had! Emily, the innkeeper, texted us prior to arrival to get our ETA to ensure someone would be there to greet us and make sure our room would be ready. When we arrived, multiple people were already salting the steep driveway (word of warning about the steepness with any snow or ice). Our room was already warmed up and waiting for us (and our pup). The room was nice, on the smaller side, but perfect for spending the night before heading into town. The only issues we had was the bed was pretty firm and the walls were very thin. There was a family in the common area until midnight that we could hear, but it was no big deal. Checking out was super easy again, just returning the room key to its hanger. Distance to town was phenomenal and it was not difficult to find, even in the dark. Absolutely stunning location!!!!

That would probably pay for parking in San Diego hotels. This is a historic building and an interesting attraction in its own right. Breakfast is included and it was terrific. Food is expensive in Julian. A similar breakfast at a local restaurant would be $20. The staff are great. I met several day managers and the night security guy. They are all terrific people. It is really like staying in someone's home rather than a hotel. These is no TV. I think that belongs with the pros. The location is great. Right in the middle of town. Cons: Our room was tiny. Really tiny. Use the drawers and closets for your stuff so you don't trip over it. A side effect of the smallness of the room is that the heater/ac struggles to control the temperature . The design of any heater/ac unit presumes a room volume. The room is so tiny, the heater's built in control parameters are way off. Parking, parking is "street parking" and on a weekend, it's every man for himself. You may have to drag your bags a block or two. ---------------------- So would we stay there again? Absolutely. I would probably spend a bit more and get one of the small number of larger rooms, if available. If you want to relax and read, I cannot think of a better place. One thing I should mention, if you attempt to make reservations on line, there are half a dozen fake web sites imitating the hotel. They are put up by a dodgy travel company. They are really good imitations. I even an experienced computer user could be fooled. It is best just to call them.

Bathroom/shower has a separate heater, and the room has its own patio, but we found it's much nicer to explore the grounds and sit on one of their many benches and chairs spread throughout the hillside with nice views. There are cows across the street that are friendly, and we went to say hi to them in the mornings and feed them tall grass. And don't forget to step outside the cottage at night to gaze at the Milky way galaxy...you heard me correctly...not just stars, you can see the faint outline of the Milky way because Julian is a Dark Sky community and Ed and Dawn's place is very dark at night...epic! Breakfasts are a delicious two course meal of a fruit dish and main. Added bonus is chatting with Ed and Dawn about Julian history and getting tips on places to go/eat. Ed and Dawn were also accommodating to bring our breakfast to their outdoor patio since my fiancé had some smell sensitivity to the food cooking in the main room (but also, it's kind of nicer to sit outside, but then you miss communing with the other guests) The main breakfast/communal area has a bunch of books and movies you can check out and take to your room, along with microwavable popcorn...we watched Gone with the Wind on VHS with the fire burning at night...such a charming and memorable time! Thanks Dawn and Ed! Our only recommendations would be: 1) for those with allergies, getting some cotton bed sheets rather than microfiber/synthetic material (we asked but they didn't have any at the time) 2) while we loved the charm of the themed rooms, there is just a lot of stuff, i.e. old teddy bears/dolls on shelves, old style window curtains that are more for show rather than necessary since the windows already have blinds, these things just make the room feel crowded and also gather dust. But maybe that's just our minimalist preference? 3) The room is advertised with a Queen bed, but seemed more like a Full (perhaps it's a European Queen?), just seemed on the smaller side. In any event, we'll probably try to book the Apple room next time which has a King size bed (which was already taken during our stay) and has a view into the woods. 4) the couch/futon cushion is detached from the wood frame and has a tendency to slide around, and it's also bigger than the seating area, so you could end up sitting on the cushion but not the frame, thus falling down.

It's against the ADA requirements- Q. Can hotels assign designated rooms for guests with service animals? A. No. A guest with a disability who uses a service animal must be provided the same opportunity to reserve any available room as other guests without disabilities. They may not be restricted to "pet-friendly" rooms. As for her flimsy excuse about the wildlife even though I assured her we follow the service dog rules of bathing her before trips and keeping her on a close leash. She never has barked EVER. We have never heard her voice! She was trained to not chase or even look at other animals she turns away. She is a well trained service dog from two well know legitimate organizations and is licensed. Even though by law we don't have to show her I offered to show Nan the CA service dog license and her training paperwork and card my husband carries showing who trained her and that she is allowed in ambulances and hospitals too. I explained all the tasks that she does to help my husband with his hearing loss and explained why we wouldn't allow her to ever be close to wildlife for her safety too. All in all Nan went on and on about how she had to close off the cabins before and after the dates because of covid and aerosols and the cost of insurance, the cost of doing business so it appears as if she used the excuse of wildlife and bad past experiences with people lying about pets being service animals to make us pay more by booking the larger pet friendly cabin. I kept saying my husband's service dog is not a pet and she wouldn't listen. 27 minutes on the phone I listened to her discriminate against my husband before asking one more time if since she was insisting we stay in the large pet cabin with the 3 beds we don't need could she at least just charge us the cost of the strawberry cabin since we aren't supposed to be penalized with increased charges because of my husband's disability and she said No. So I finally said well I'm going to report you and hung up. I did double check just in case there was a change in the last few weeks but there wasn't. I called the CA state park in Julian and spoke with the ranger which is the same wildlife, same forest as Nans property and they assured me that service dogs are still allowed in cabins there AND even on trails. He assured me that my husband's service dog would not interfere with the deer under her cabin at all!!! That the people staying in the cabins and even her 6 cats roaming the property could interfere more. Her excuse was a flimsy way to try to extort more money out of us. Maybe someone who was trying to pass a pet off as a service dog would have been fine with this since she does have no pets on her listings BUT a legitimate well trained service dog is NOT a pet and we know the law and we are proud of the amazing job the dog does that is potentially life saving. It's sad we are missing out what appears to be a cute cabin but I'm glad we aren't monetarily supporting disabled discrimination.

This is truly one of the most amazing cabin stays we have experienced in years. There is…read moreabsolutely nothing offensive about this property, not even a hint. The hosts, Chuck and Nan, live close by, and make themselves available, but are not doting. They have carefully crafted this cabin, a true labor of love, to be enjoyed by guests. Less than ten minutes to town, but you feel like you're out in the country, away from everything. Stellar A+ views, comfortable furnishings, a wood-burning stove as the centerpiece, with all the amenities for cooking, relaxing, and simply embracing the sense of wonder for creation and nature. Unlike any place we've stayed in Julian, where we've been coming for New Years for the past decade. Highly recommend!
