My family and I stayed here literally as a last resort since our Airbnb didn't work out (long story!) - our Airbnb host called Apple Tree Inn for us at almost 11pm on the night before 4th of July weekend. We just blindly booked over the phone not knowing what to expect but had no choice since it was late.p I was presently surprised by our hotel room! We booked via telephone and were given our room number and code to enter. It was easy to enter! We parked directly in front of our room which made for easy unloading. The room was cozy and clean. It was very spacious for my husband, our baby, our dog and I along with a whole bunch of stuff we packed! Our room was dog friendly, 2 comfy queen beds / comfy pillows, wood floors, air conditioner / heater, ceiling fan, adequate lighting, mini fridge with tiny freezer space, small table for 2, keurig coffee machine with coffee/creamer/sugar, vanity, shower with good water pressure, modern sink, closet with hangers. Behind the inn is an area to walk dogs or hang out on the tables and chairs. The room fit our needs for our very short stay. We would definitely come back here next time! read more

The room we rented was very difficult for me to access due to bad knees. My wife contacted the managers who was so helpful. He changed us to an easy access room. The room was very clean. Had great beds, A/C & Heat and Smart TV. Since it was a smaller room he did and adjustment to our rate. If anyone is visiting Julian, CA, the Apple Tree Inn is the best choice. read more

THEY WILL CANCEL YOUR RESERVATION WITHOUT YOUR CONSENT if someone else wants to book who can make them more money. In our case, we booked more than 2 to 3 months in advance and then one month out we randomly got a call an email saying that our reservation had been canceled and we had been moved to a different property 2.5 miles away. I called to inquire, and the reason given was that there was a "overlap" in reservations. If they are booking overlapping reservations, now they aren't really reservations are they? The other property they booked us was supposedly an "upgrade." I specifically booked this hotel because of its proximity to Jeremy's On the Hill, the cider brewery, and Fort Cross. If I wanted to book something 2.5 miles away, I would have. When I asked why there was an overlap, the attendance said that a big party is coming in for a wedding for multiple days. Not sure why someone is just booking their wedding reservations a month out, but I guess it was their lucky day since Apple Tree is happy to delete anyone and everyone's reservations if they can make a buck. I will add that the lady was not apologetic at all. Poor Customer Service. read more

DO NOT STAY HERE. Earlier this year we booked at this hotel last minute. It was late night. I show up to check in and there is a hand written note "text this number to check in" I texted it- nothing, called it, no call back. Did not receive a text until later in night when I already cancelled. The place was dark and looked like a run down motel 6 from outside so we left. I tried to dispute my claim with hotels.com to get my money back but when they did their "investigation" The Apple Tree Inn lied to hotels.com, they said someone is always present there and they do not ask guests to text check in. I regret not taking a pic of the hand written sign posted on the door. I was charged $321 for two nights and never received a refund. Booker beware!! read more

The rooms were very clean and have clearly been updated. This was such a sweet little place to stay a quick overnight. I liked that it was very close to some dinner places too. They supplied a keurig, coffee pods (including decaf), and little tubs of creamer which was also very appreciated! They also have a mini fridge in the room which came in handy for leftovers. I removed a star because the water in the shower didn't get hot and on a cold night like the night we stayed it would have been very appreciated. The faucet for the bathtub was also coming away from the wall which was surprising for a room that was recently renovated. I removed an additional star because the Wi-Fi was VERY spotty even though we had a room right next to the office. They also don't supply any extra blankets for cold nights but the heater worked pretty well. Overall, we would stay here again. read more

5 stars because it has what is expected. Right on CA-78, so easy to find. Worth the hour+ drive through winding mountain roads, 50+ miles from the beach. Quick check-in. Keypad and key outside your room. Pets allowed, of course. Ice machine was broken, NOT good in mid-July! Peaceful setting behind building, with a few chairs. Great trees for climbing! ;) Rustic surrounding areas well-lit at night. SOOO QUIET! Restaurant next door, nice staff, a little pricey, limited menu, seating not comfortable. Across the street is Winola Wood-fired Pizza- outdoor seating, live music. We should've gone there...But EVERYTHING closes at 9pm. Downtown Julian is 2 miles down the road, so the location is perfect. Don't recommend this Inn for families with children, they'd be very bored. But otherwise it is a great, quiet getaway! Good pricing. But bring bottled water, no vending machines, no ice machine. read more

I absolutely enjoyed my stay at the Apple Tree Inn, easy check in (check in time is 4:30 pm) so keep that in mind if you are trying to check in early. Also check in is made by text message or call. They will send you a text message of how to get into your room and all the information you need to access your lock box for your room key. I stayed in the Deluxe room with a kitchenette! I must say, it felt like I was in a upgraded fully furnished mini apartment. I was provided with cooking ware, cups and mason jars, a toaster, a microwave and to top it all off a Keurig with complimentary K-cups and creamer! And a cute sized mini fridge! The room was very spacious, a closet as soon as you walk in, and a beautiful updated bathroom. I also would love to mention the bed and how comfortable it was. I slept so good and so well that I feel absolutely recharged after my long days of hiking. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because of the ice machine not being available, also the little amount of towels in room, the low shower pressure and not enough toilet paper. Also the WiFi was in and out quite often. But other than that I loved loved the overall stay! The location is perfect, very close to all restaurants, cideries, and a 8-10 minute drive into Julian where there are plenty of cute old shops. Also, the places we chose to hike were not too far away. I will definitely be back Apple Tree ! Thank you for the great memories and beautiful scenery. I WILL DEFINITELY be back!!! read more

The sheets were filthy like they just made the bed after the last guest with hair, brown dirt, and ants. I slept on top of the covers and didn't use the pillows that smelled like dirty hair. My feet were black from walking around the floor. The WiFi never worked so I couldn't do my work. I've stayed here before and it wasn't this bad. Sad, I liked staying here. read more

Modern remodel and well maintained older hotel in good location just outside of Julian. Beds were comfy, room was clean, with nice decor, good coffee pods in room with a fridge. It's a "3-star" hotel in the typical hotel rating sense with better than average rooms. I'm not giving 5 stars on Yelp because the rooms were pricy and the pool was under construction. Wanted to get out of San Diego beach neighborhood we live in to get away from the fireworks since our dog can't handle it. It was a last minute booking since camping was out of the question due to heat wave. Check in was easy, AC was awesome, room very clean, they delivered ice and shower was nice. Only thing I wish was the pool was repaired and working. The restaurant (Jeremy on the hill, Hero's, California bakery Calico brewery and Julian junction) in the area are great and wineries and Julian are close. Lots to do. My son and I stayed here recently and were very impressed. Everything was in order. They hand delivered ice. Easy check-in with door codes. It's right across the street from a cool rustic restaurant. Julian is a unique town nestled in rolling hills not far from San Diego. read more

Very comfortable. Very quiet. Very Clean. Very reasonable. Pleasant pool area for a cooling dip. Check in was a breeze. The room was spotless. The location is handy for the city, but country enough to really feel a getaway. Walking distance to very local bars and eating establishments. We decided to do an overnite trip with our two pups to Julian. There's only 2 or 3 hotels that allow dogs in the area. We decided on The Apple Tree Inn cause we liked the modern decor from the pictures and we liked that we could walk right outside from our door. Check-in was super easy. A text with instructions was sent about an hour before the 4pm check-in time. Room was very spacious and clean. Beds were comfy, good Wi-Fi, and Direct TV was available. Very quiet. The place seemed full but we did not hear voices from the other rooms or outside. We had dinner next door at Jeremy's on the Hill. Great food and atmosphere. Across the street is the California Mountain Bakery which came highly recommended by the locals we met at dinner. The pies and breakfast sandwiches were amazing! read more

I tried to do early check in, the email said to call 48h before hand so I did that and the man said they wouldn't know until the morning of, he told me to call back in the morning to ask the day of.. I called back at 8am and he said they wouldn't know until 11.. that they would message us when the room is available.. check in is super late 4pm.. it's hard when you come up on a motorcycle. We ended up getting a "early" check in at 3pm. Not worth it. Make sure you take snacks with you or food, everything closes early and the Apple tree inn says they have vending machines.. we got super hungry at 8pm and walked to the vending machines and they were completely empty and unplugged. We were only given 1 half used roll of toilet paper. At night when we had water the shower had no pressure at all! It was drizzling out. We woke up at 6am to shower and had no water what so ever no water even coming out of the sink.. We also had no electricity at all from 1am on. When we got to our room someone had left their Netflix logged in probably because they didn't have electricity in the morning to log out so don't log in to your personal info! read more

We stayed in the farm house the past weekend. It was really beautiful, big kitchen, nice dining room setup, big living room, etc. But the AC didn't work. It just wouldn't start. They didn't send anyone to fix the AC. They said it's not an easy fix. They didn't offer any compensation either. I complained on hotels.com, and the manager replied: "The farm house you booked does not have air conditioning and we do not advertise it as such" Well, If the farm house has no AC why would you say it's not an easy fix? So the AC unit in the basement and the control panel on the wall are fake? Oh and I'm attaching the screen shot from your own website. You do advertise you have air conditioning in the farm house. My family actually managed to get by without AC, despite it was 100 degrees outside, and we actuallly quite enjoyed our stay, until we saw your response. Unapologetic and dishonest. You can really see the work the owner has put into it once you get inside the room. I enjoy the modern checking and anytime I needed anything after texting Alex I had it within 15 minutes. Allen, one of the housekeeping staff was also friendly and always supportive. Yes there are some rough edges in places but the peace and comfort supersede anything that is in transition. We had to stay here due to a plumbing problem in our home and found it hard to leave the Farmhouse. Highly recommended for families. We'll be back! read more

The only thing was the Krueger it was way to big and their was still water in it no telling how long. But there is a coffee cart across the street that we purchased our coffee from. We stayed in May. The sink had a sign "do not drink water" dated 2/21/20; water looked clear and they provided 4 water bottles. Liked the contactless check in; key was placed in a small lockbox near the door and they texted us the lockbox code. Keurig cup coffeemaker with several good K cups of coffee. No landline in the room but good cellphone signal with AT&T. Switched off the noisy mini fridge overnight. Only 2 pillows in a room with a queen bed. We would have liked more pillows, but we forgot to ask. Connection speed about 10 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload, a bit slow even at night. The bathtub was slippery. A bathmat might have helped. read more

Unfortunately, our stay was very disappointing. If I could give a zero star I would. For $225 I was expecting a little bit more quality. I know it is not a five star hotel, but I thought it will be a bit better than Motel 6, boy was I wrong. First of all our shower looked shredded (see photo)! I contacted the hotel by text; no response. Next the air conditioner did not work right; there was a rattle and the strength was low. Later there were ants everywhere on the side table. Could not put a 7'Up coke on the side for the fear of ant going in the soda. My last can had ants swarming everywhere. Later my mother found yellow stains on the blanket and towels. Later in the evening we found out the light outside our room was out. The funny thing is that my friend stayed in the same place, but another room. I looked at her room; she did not have the similar problems. Also they charged the room the day before check in. Usually, hotels charge the day of arrival. My impression is that it has been recently purchased by new owners and they are working on fixing up the place. We had an absolutely enjoyable stay. I believe it was room 19, with kitchenette. Room was very clean, super comfy beds, enough storage, big kitchen, deck with lovely view of their oak garden. You can tell there are many new plantings, so in a few years when the landscaping grows in, it will be even more lovely. (Landscaping appears to be attempting to hide equipment and storage, but there are many mature oaks as well). We will definitely return!! Room for improvement: our mini-suite could use a few more amenities (cups, glasses, paper towels, kitchen towels), they had run out of pool towels, keep the landscaping coming, utilize the lovely back garden more with common areas (seating, games, firepits) and definitely a jacuzzi. I look forward to returning and watching this gem in the rough continue to improve and develop. read more

No human contact...I'm assuming due to COVID. All arrangements were made by phone and text. No ice available; had to go all the way back to town. No instructions on how to run the TV, and we have DirecTV and a Vizio TV, but they obviously aren't the same. Brown water comes out of the faucet. Yuck! Bring your own drinking water. No extra blankets, no wash cloths, and no Kleenex. Also no exhaust fan in the bathroom. We did appreciate the Keurig coffeemaker. read more

For 200 bucks, both room and service were sub-par. While the room was pleasant enough, beds were comfortable and everything was clean, a busted coffee machine, terrible water pressure in shower, rusty/colored water coming out of tub/shower faucet and no on-site person in office diminished the experience markedly. When we drove up to the inn in the evening, there was no one in the office. There were two numbers to call, the one we were provided with when booking online and one on the door of office. It took about 15-20 minutes to hear back from someone telling us how to get into our room (a coded lockbox with key inside). This is the first time in my 60+ years I've been to a hotel where there was no one onsite to check us in. Not a huge deal, but when you're tired it's pretty disconcerting. The k-cup coffee machine was out of order and we had to call again for service. We did reach someone right off this time and they had a guy bring us a new machine (took about 10-15 minutes. Not bad). The people we dealt with were all very nice. We just expect more. Usually, for instance, at this level there's some sort of buffet, OJ, fruit, etc. And there are people onsite we can talk with if we want more pillows or assistance. Perhaps this is the new-normal, where texting has replaced face-to-face service and we just need to adapt. Sigh... But yeah, we won't be booking here again. read more

While I can see people might shy away because the previous reviews are very bleak, I want to assure you cozy and quaint hotel seekers to not shy away from this place. I loved my visit. We stayed in room 11, and the place is absolutely adorable. The room was clean and the decor was modern farmhouse. The sink in the bathroom was beautiful, and I could have stayed longer just to sleep in the comfy bed again. There was even a pool for the guests to use. I love that the restaurant right across the street has live music Friday and Saturday nights. The two nights we were there, we enjoyed live blues and live swing music from local artists. I even bought an album because I enjoyed it so much. The tv was a smart tv, so I was able to log into my Netflix account or watch YouTube videos. This leads me to the downside though. We could not get the DirectTV to work. In defense of the hotel though, we didn't try to ask the front desk to help us because we weren't really in Julian to watch DirectTV, it just would have been a nice perk to use while we settled down for the night. All and all, I would absolutely stay here again and I would highly recommend anyone check this place out (I did tell all of my coworkers). Heck, maybe next time I'll even bring my dog; they are pet friendly! read more

The manager said we can checkout if we don't like the stay, but he will not give a partial refund as was requested, despite another night already having been paid for. We booked a suite for a romantic getaway. We only had one pillow each. Many general accommodations including the bathtub faucet, stove, and tv did not work. This place was such a pleasant surprise. Definitely a hidden gem! We're from San Diego and wanted to get away for the weekend since our other travel plans were cancelled due to Covid-19. We found this place on AirBnb and was a bit skeptical at first. We were so desperate to just get out for some fresh air. Let me just tell you the photos do not do this place any justice! First off the location is perfect! It's about 3 miles away from the downtown area which was perfectly okay with us. The downtown area can get a bit congested due to all the visitors so the location of the Inn was perfect! The Inn is so close to so many other hidden gems in the area. We had dinner at Jeremy's on the Hill and it was just a delight. We didn't have to drive we just walked across the parking lot. We were right across the street from a Bakery that made the best sandwiches and pie (Better than Mom's and Julian Pie company). We were also less than a mile away from the Julian Hard Cider barn and pumpkin patches! The location was so ideal for what we came to Julian for! The no contact check in process was so easy and fluid. Our Inn keeper was so fast to respond to our text messages, even early when I texted to request a late check out. They were so accommodating. The property itself is just beautiful. If you walk to the back there's a hidden yard with chairs and lights where we were able to just sit, relax and enjoy the beautiful mountain views. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The only thing I would probably suggest to the Inn is changing the shower curtains as it seems they were a bit worn down. I read the one star bad reviews and decided to give this Inn a try anyway. I am so glad I did!! My boyfriend and I are staying here for my birthday weekend and we are having the best time!! The room is clean and comfortable with plenty of towels and toiletries for our use. We spent two hours in the pool, the water was clean and clear and there were plenty of chairs and lounges This is a cute country inn. I think the bad review people must have been expecting Ritz-Carlton rooms. We are completely satisfied and will return. read more

We stayed in the farmhouse, it is so very large but very charming, from the adorable animal artwork to all the windows and the big comfy couches. The beds are comfortable even the little one ( it's actually 2 beds) in the secret room off the very large kitchen. Large dining room and outdoor porches. It even has USB ports on the night stands to charge your devices. Very thoughtful. We definitely want to comeback. read more

Amazing nature walk behind hotel! We stayed here due to fact that our favorite classic rock band was playing across the street. We stayed in the deluxe remodeled room. The bed was super comfy, sheets had to be 1000 thread count. We went on an amazing walk down wynola road in the morning. It was magical. Paid a lil over $100 on a peak weekend (3/2010) which is decent for this area. The room is pretty quaint and somewhat charming. Our room was kinda tacky with pink paint on walls and matching flowery pink bedspreads :-p The room was pretty clean but it has it's share of problems: 1. Toilet flush doesn't drain every time. You have to flush it pretty forcefully to get it to go the first time. This might be my room only but other ppl mention this on another site. 2. No A/C control. There's ac but it's management controlled. You can make it less cold by putting a wooden block (provided) on the ac vent. When ours was on, it was still cold. Note: heater is fine and has a thermostat you control. 3. Out-dated furniture. Old looking but functional. Bed is a little hard but springy at least. 4. Small tv, no remote, 4-5 cable channels only. Those are the only major problems. For me and gf, we're not too picky so the place was a decent stay. The owner/staff were friendly and we got our room a few hours before check-in. If you can get over the little annoyances then this place is nice simply because it was clean enough for us and does have a quaint/ cozy feel. The owner should sell his new red hummer and get the placed updated a lil more, haha. read more

The Apple tree Inn in Julian CA. Looks nice with their online Ad. I recently reserved a 2 night stay. I was notified my father was having issues in San Diego and had to cancel my reservations. I cancelled in person to the kid working in the office at the Apple tree Inn. He told me he would cancel on his end but for me to contact expedia to cancel. When I got back to San Diego I got my credit card bill and was charged for both nights. Never will I ever go back to the Apple tree Inn ever again. Thru Expedia I (when making the reservations) purchased the hotel insurance too. Expedia forwarded me to their "Insurance" and the phone rang 3 times...and they hung up on me. I called expedia back and it rings 3 times and hangs up on me. Do not use expedia and do not go to the Apple tree inn. Cost me over $400.00 for a room I never set foot into. read more
