I recently worked at The Joint in Whitehall, and left because the owner is a conniving narcissist. I was instructed during my first week working there that the owner did not like people knowing his name, which seemed strange. After working there for 7 months, it is my best guess that he prefers it that way so that he is never held accountable for the deplorable way he treats his staff. So here is a non-exhaustive list of my horrible dealings with William 'Tito' Negron.
The rose-colored glasses last for a bit because you think "wow, Tito is so chill and laid back. This is great." and it is nice! Until you realize that he is so "laid back" that he ignores your texts for W E E K S and shirks his responsibilities onto you (even though he has severe trust issues, so refused to give any of the baristas at the Whitehall store access to order everything that was needed to run the store), and then manipulating you by questioning your communication skills while he is texting you for the first time in nearly a month.
When I proceeded to address him on his lack of response and requested to meet with him to discuss my role there, he did not respond for a while. Instead, he spent what I can only assume took hours looking through security camera footage trying to catch me doing something unsavory. After requesting several more times to meet with him, he sent me a video of myself - the week prior - undercharging a customer for a beverage. Since the customer left a tip, he cited that as me "pocketing money" and refused to meet with me and told me that I was not welcome to return.
Fast forward about two weeks, I'm waiting for a pay stub for my last two shifts that never arrives. I look to find that my last two shifts were wiped clean from the time clock and a false memo was put on my previous paystub (AFTER I was already paid out for that pay period) indicating that my last two shifts were included in that paycheck, which was a lie. Fortunately, I was able to catch this lie and obtain my paycheck, which is why I now feel safe to share some of my experience that was truly nothing short of traumatic.
Never in my life have I had a worse employer. He has no communication skills, no boundaries, and will use his baristas as therapists so that he can vent about a plethora of topics ranging from his alcoholic family members to child abuse. Naturally, it's a small business so there are no benefits which is not a shock. What IS, in fact, shocking is that when you do fall ill and need to stay home sick, he will not only ignore your message, but will then shame you to the rest of the staff, questioning how sick you really are. And if you struggle with any mental health disorder, BE WARY!! He openly insults people who struggle with mental illness and need medication. I am not the first, and I certainly won't be the last to suffer here. There are countless horror stories about this man and working for him that are casually swept under the rug. But not this one. read more
