I'm a fan! With the closing up of basically everything on Hewitt the Independent is a breath of fresh air. Great corner location so the place always light and airy. The staff is great and extremely knowledgable. The space doesn't have a kitchen so they allow outside food to be brought in and they have access to all the local restaurants some of which will deliver to the bar. They always have GREAT selections, especially for different ciders (not just plain) and sours (which are hard to come by in Everett.) The prices are extremely fair and the owner Doug is great to converse with. They give great recommendations and I love the playlists! Best part is it's only 4 blocks from my apartment. They allow you to bring in any kind of food or games that you may please as they are set on giving you the full independent beer experience. Always really good information on each tap they have. Doug has mentioned before that they keep all kinds of beers and wines in bottles/cans to suit ANYONE that comes in, including a friend that gets dragged along but prefers the lighter beers (coors, bud light, etc.) There is now a book & beer club going on which I have not yet attended but seems like an AWESOME idea. If you come in first 2 hours of the day's opening and stay throughout, you get to keep happy hour ($1 off) prices all night long. All in all this is a really cool, new place unlike most I've seen before. They are not a brewing company so they have the freedom to choose whichever brands and brews they feel are the best! Fabulous beer selection and even better staff. This place truly feels like a neighborhood bar. Before I left my first visit the owners knew my name, and even more impressive, remembered it the next time I was in (and I swear it's not because I made a scene). They go out of their way to provide a fun and welcoming environment. I love that you can order Thai food through the bar and pay for it on your tab. I also dig that they're dog friendly, even though my mutts are jerks and could never be brought there. As a final bonus, they're also a hockey bar, and always seem to have a game on during the season. It's a great place to stop before/after a 'tips game, or after beer league at the x-finity arena. read more

Always an interesting and excellent selection on tap, focusing on northwest beers, with a nod to California brews too. There's always a cider or sour or three on tap, as well as a small selection of wines for those pitiful souls who don't like beer. The owners are very friendly and personable, and know their beers. Jeff and Doug are still killing it at the Independent. By far my favorite spot to grab a beer in Snohomish County. They always have a well-curated and always changing tap list. My favorite thing about them is their honesty. They know what types of beer I like and have no problem telling me NOT to buy a beer they don't think I'll like. They always still give me a sample to confirm and they've pretty much been spot on every time. Keep it up guys! read more

Independent is undoubtedly the best bar in Everett. It has a relaxed and classy atmosphere which is upheld even with its shuffle board and board games. The bartenders are really welcoming and efficient. The beer selection always provides a nice variety. And they consistently have at least 3-4 ciders on tap as well as bottled options. While they don't serve food, they parner with some of the neighboring restaurants and allow food to be brought or delivered you at the bar. I've also seen people bring food from home/grocery store and munch on some snacks in house. :) read more

You'll typically find a couple local Everett brews, a couple more regional (Washington and Oregon) brews, and a couple national and even international brews. Plus if you've exhausted their tap list of unique check-ins on Untappd, they have an awesome bottle list too. Bring in your own food or order from the awesome Thai place a block away and have it delivered to your seat. Although there are many places to enjoy craft beer in the Everett area, none quite measure up to the selection and versatility of The Independent. Unlike some of its neighbors, you can opt to bring your own food in and/or order out from nearby establishments (they have recommendations and a couple of menus for your convenience). It's appealing to not be locked into a certain food style or price point, especially if you're interested in pairing specific tastes with the variety of draft styles. When I went, there were two sours on which is rare to come by in North Everett and I saw some of my fellow bar patrons indulging in flights as well (the price of the flight you choose is just a dollar more than the most expensive beer you select). Their bottle and wine list is pretty extensive if you're not feeling the draft options (16 taps though! Growler fills are reasonably priced). Something that I appreciate about their menu format is that they mark which beers will be a "fancy" pour, as in a tulip glass that is a little bit short of a pint. I don't care too much myself about the specific volume of the beer I choose but I've heard this nightmare of a conversation happen around me at multiple bars/brewpubs and I just think it's just neat that they've anticipated some of these pitfalls for people that are obviously a little new to the craft beer scene. Also, if you arrive and order during happy hour, you get to stay on happy hour pricing for the duration of your visit - heck yeah! The two owners/bartenders Doug and Jeff are extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic about their trade and are quick to strike up a friendly conversation with you if the current volume permits. I believe they are doing trivia now on Wednesdays and they have a really cool mug club deal for those interested in being a frequent customer. This place has a bunch of unique taps, good bottle selection too. Bring in your own food, so this place is all about the beer. Best part? Happy Hour that's come happy, stay happy -- if you arrive in time for Happy Hour you get Happy Hour for as long and as late as you stay! This will be my new pregame destination. read more
