The beef brisket(extra $5) slices are thick, smokey, beefy, and so beautiful. Very good, but a bit on the dry side. In order, the food: my date ordered the pork rind appetizer and fries. I ordered the improper charcuterie board. According to the server, we received a smaller than normal order of pork rinds. Which wasn't that big of a deal because it literally looked like they opened the bag of gas station pork rinds and poured them onto a tray with seasoning. Fries were brought out later, but they were cold. The charcuterie board was good for quantity, but my mouth quickly got tired of the flavors. Everything seemed crazier than it needed to be, and none of the sauces really stood out. In fact, all of them were sweeter than I had expected. Oh yeah, when I ordered a Bud Light with a glass, the glass was dirty. So the food was definitely an under achieving moment. Next, the server was actually nice and the ambience was great. I can't believe it's been 5 years since my last review! Probably because my first review was of the THREE STAR kind and there are just so many other choices in the Fort Mill foodscape in these recent years of the Post COVID era. I was pleasantly surprised, I had the chopped salad which gets you a nice mix of ICEBERG and romaine lettuce. I had them add the grilled salmon which gave it a very nice flavor boost which was really surprisingly good. The honey balsamic dressing was a nice unexpected surprise. Is it really a salad without ICEBERG lettuce? I think not. The service was outstanding for a Friday lunch time and our Server, Tristan was on the spot for beverage refills and answers to questions about the menu. The main dining room is expansive, open and airy and you get a sense of the buildings history fronting Main Street Fort Mill. We really enjoyed Improper Pig! They serve BBQ with an Asian twist. We made a meal of the chow bao buns, mac & cheese, and pork rolls. By the time the nachos arrived, we were full! The pork rolls were absolutely delicious and the sauces that come with them really took the flavor up a notch. Bao buns aren't really my thing but they were really good too with the spicy hoisin sauce! The pulled pork was juicy and flavorful. The brisket was tender and but had a really smoky flavor that was a little too much for me. Next time we go, we will definitely order the pork rolls again, but I want to try more things on their menu. read more

I am a Fort Mill local and often take my kids to this restaurant for quality family time. Over the years, we've never had any issues; the service and food have always been great. However, today was different. The server and manager were rude, making my 6-year-old cry over playing with a small plastic pumpkin decoration. They claimed they had warned us, but we never heard it. They told my children not to touch the decorations and disciplined them in front of me, saying, "since your father is not telling you... (I will)," which I found completely inappropriate. I questioned why this was a big deal in a family-friendly restaurant since my child wasn't causing any disturbance. The manager, DARIAN GREENE, made rude comments after I complained about our treatment. When I expressed my concerns, she offered to cover the bill to "help the sour taste in your mouth." - very rude! As we were leaving, they started filming and taking pictures of us as if we were criminals. Another person claiming to be the manager (the cook) walked out of the kitchen defending the staff's behavior and questioned my parenting skills over a simple Halloween ornament. I wanted a logical explanation for this treatment. It was a bizarre experience, and I can't understand how any business can afford to treat customers like this. I hope the owner addresses this issue and that the staff apologizes to my child. Despite this incident, I have no complaints about the food or atmosphere. We came here for dinner one week night and was happy to find decent bbq. The interior of the restaurant is well lit in the main dining room, but we opted to sit at the bar which can seat up 8 people near the kitchen. The service was good as the bartender did a good job consistently checking on us. We started with the fried pork skins (chicharrones) which were surprisingly very delicious. They came out fresh and as we ordered with the bbq rub on the side. I never had blue cheese with my chicharrones but I have to say it is a great addition to the dish. For my main course I had the brisket sandwich which was OK my only complaint is I wish the meat was a little more tender and moist. It's been a long time since we visited Improper Pig. We decided to celebrate Father's Day here with a late lunch. I just love the space...ode to the historic building with touches of industrial mod decor. Service was very good and attentive. Everything we ordered was delicious! And large portions. Disappointed I didn't take pics. My husband and 2 boys all ordered the Caesar Salad to start, and we shared hush puppies and sweet potato fries. I ordered the salmon beet salad (added bacon). Salmon was flavorful and cooked perfectly. Full of flavor! My husband ordered the brisket sandwich and enjoyed. Each of my boys ordered the sirloin steak with fries. I was trying to find a restaurant for eight people, four adults, four kids and suggested the Improper Pig since the menu was varied & the place was local. We arrived & learned that they had an hour wait but were suggested to go next door for a beer. We enjoyed a beer next door while we waited for our table which was a great way to deal with overflow. Once seated we noticed that the restaurant had been featured on Diners, Dives, & Drivethroughs. We ordered the nacho appetizer since it was featured on the show. They were a hit. Home cut thin potatoes, width just the right amount of cheese and chicken. Slightly salty with complemented the beer. I ordered the bao steam buns with pork, which were delicious. The steam bun was airy and not heavy at all and the slaw was sweet & tangy. This is a great place to go with a group. The Mac & cheese burger was what a few of the 16 year old boys ordered & they were unable to finish it, which is saying something. I've been to this restaurant at the Cotswold location way back, but heard that location is now closed. Luckily, the owner opened a new location in the Providence Road area, as well as one in Fort Mill. For some reason I expected a dive, but the Fort Mill location was surprisingly cuter than the one at the old Cotswold location. In fact, I found the place very sweet and inviting...with a wide open layout and high ceilings. Great, upbeat overhead music too. Guess you can say that this is an upscaled BBQ restaurant? I thought the Mac 'n Cheese w/ Pork was unique to Flipside in Rock Hill (and Fort Mill), but realized that here at The Improper Pig, they also had their fancy version, called the Fern Bowl, which also came with Cole Slaw...so I just had to try it! I really liked the great, big, comfort food presentation...in a huge bowl. I began porking it down right away, but realized that it was way too bland. I then noticed that the table was equipped with a variety of BBQ sauce bottles, so I tried several varieties...but sadly, I just didn't love the taste of any of the sauces. Also, the Mac 'n Cheese was a bit too cheesy? Oh well. I did notice that their menu had many tantalizing items...a fairly rich selection of Southern American favorites. Definitely need to bring my Southern American husband over with me next time...he's sure to love it, probably a tad more than I did. Overall, I really liked this restaurant and what they had to offer (all at very reasonable pricing too). The service was spot on as well. Although I didn't love the flavor of the Fern Bowl, I did love the concept and the presentation, including the generous addition of Cole Slaw as sides. I'll probably try something else next time. Again, although I didn't love the food that I ordered, I did like many things about this restaurant, so think it deserves 4 stars. Came with two sauces, a Japanese white sauce and their Tong's Thai (like a sweet and sour). Their is also another sauce on the table that went well with it which is the spicy hoisin. For our meals we did chicken chow bar sliders. We're good but thought afterwards we should of went with pork. And then a platter with pork and sausage. For sides we had the mac & cheese, jalapeño cheese grits and sweet potato casserole. The mac & cheese and jalapeño cheese grits get special recognition. We were visiting family at Lake Wylie, SC and I had a need for barbecue. Five of us hit The Improper Pig in the cute town of Fort Mill. They have a decent selection of draft beers as well as canned. I started with an IPA while perusing the menu. You can order a plate (one meat and two sides) or a platter (two meats and two sides). The regular sides are good, but there is also a set of upgraded sides, which cost a little extra. There is an odd management decision - the upgraded sides cost $1.00 more if ordered as side dishes, but when you upgrade on a plate or platter, each is $1.50 more. No rationale for that, but so be it... I had the platter with brisket and Andouille sausage (both are up-charges from the regular pork, chicken or tofu proteins), and for my sides I had the jalapeño cheese grits and the (up-charge) spicy green beans. The andouille was really good, and I paired it with the spicy mustard barbecue sauce, one of the six sauces available at each table. The brisket was cooked perfectly, and I tried it with two different sauces, one was a honey-based and both were good. There was some untrimmed fat on the brisket, which IMO should have been trimmed off in the kitchen. Maybe it's a Carolina thing to leave the fat on...? I like a little more kick in my barbecue sauce, and they had six different "pucker up" sauces by the bar, so I tried a watermelon Carolina Reaper sauce and it was wonderful. The jalapeño grits were good, and would have been great if they were served (temperature) hot instead of lukewarm and with a little more sliced jalapeño. If we have time to go back I would ask for the kitchen to hit them in the microwave and then gimme some more sliced jalapeños on the side. Pretty please. The spicy green beans were fantastic, and I think I'm going to call them to see if they will share the recipe. Fresh green beans in a very nice spicy pepper-flake sauce. Really special and really good. My wife had coleslaw as one side and it was meh. Really no different than the mayonnaise-based coleslaw you'd buy at the grocery store counter. She also had the sweet potato dish as a side and she loved it, though it was very sweet. Another relative had the pork and declared it delicious. Plates and platters include a hush puppy and some pickled onions. The pickled onions were very good, but it was a small portion - literally one forkful. I could have eaten a cupful of those, given the chance. Next time I'll ask for a heaping helping. The hush puppies were good - it's my first time having those, so they were sweeter than I expected. We went there on a warm August evening and they had the air conditioning cranked. It must have been about 68 degrees. I was wishing for a sweater, and I'm usually pretty tolerant of cold air. Be prepared and bring a sweater or light jacket. Their full menu includes nachos, wings, other tasty- appetizers, burgers, and more. The reason for our visit was the barbecue, and the barbecue was very very good. We shall return! read more
