We have lived here so long and have never stopped because we were not sure and have not heard much about this place... let me be the first to say YUM YUM YESSSS PIGGY PLEASE! Everything about our experience at The Improper Pig was absolutely perfect! From the moment we walked in, the decor and atmosphere stood out and hit all the marks, a few dust places but I'm assuming this place has been here awhile so let's call it that...but the attention to detail made the restaurant feel unique, welcoming, and thoughtfully designed in a warm way. The service was top-notch, with a friendly and attentive waitress she was more eager to fill our drinks than I was to drink lol but honestly she single handily was a beautiful train of productivity, the entire staff was, very impressed, that's a rare find these days and especially for the South. The manager, I imagine runs a tight ship...that helped make the experience even better. The biggest surprise was when my fried rice arrived at the table. The portion size was incredible for the price, mostly because and the quality of the food exceeded my expectations. It was flavorful, satisfying, and clearly made with technique. I will say the brisket on the barbecue plate my husband ordered was incredibly dry, the plethora of flavors of barbecue sauce on the table couldn't help it either...I'm thinking they reheat the meat for the bbq plates throughout the day (which makes sense) but they maybe need to consider another reheating method or I'm curious when the bbq is freshly made...I'd love to come in that day. Either way I truly left almost completely speechless...what a gem. We will be back to ensure it wasn't a one off type of day. It's not often that you find a place where the atmosphere, service, value, and food all come together so well...with techniques going in the kitchen. Whew! Highly recommend the smoked pork ribs which are are fall off the bone tender, meaty, and with gorgeous and lovely dry rub and bbq glaze, so good! They need no BBQ sauce! The beef brisket(extra $5) slices are thick, smokey, beefy, and so beautiful. Very good, but a bit on the dry side. No worries, just add one of the many BBQ sauces, all lovely and special in their own ways. The house slaw is nice and light with an Asian inspired dressing. This place had been recommended to me by friends before but we finally tried it tonight and it was great. Everything we ordered was fantastic, but for me, the best part was how seriously they took my food allergies. The waitress had the manage come over to get a better understanding of my allergies and then spoke with the chef and brought out the actual recipe so I could confirm everything was safe. This was truly one of the best experiences I've had since being diagnosed with food allergies, and knowing they took them so seriously was incredible. I don't get to eat out very much anymore because the risk of anaphylaxis is too dangerous but after finding a gem like this, but we'll definitely be back despite the 40 minute drive from our house. read more

In order, the food: my date ordered the pork rind appetizer and fries. I ordered the improper charcuterie board. According to the server, we received a smaller than normal order of pork rinds. Which wasn't that big of a deal because it literally looked like they opened the bag of gas station pork rinds and poured them onto a tray with seasoning. Fries were brought out later, but they were cold. The charcuterie board was good for quantity, but my mouth quickly got tired of the flavors. Everything seemed crazier than it needed to be, and none of the sauces really stood out. In fact, all of them were sweeter than I had expected. Oh yeah, when I ordered a Bud Light with a glass, the glass was dirty. So the food was definitely an under achieving moment. Next, the server was actually nice and the ambience was great. I can't believe it's been 5 years since my last review! Probably because my first review was of the THREE STAR kind and there are just so many other choices in the Fort Mill foodscape in these recent years of the Post COVID era. I was pleasantly surprised, I had the chopped salad which gets you a nice mix of ICEBERG and romaine lettuce. I had them add the grilled salmon which gave it a very nice flavor boost which was really surprisingly good. The honey balsamic dressing was a nice unexpected surprise. Is it really a salad without ICEBERG lettuce? I think not. The service was outstanding for a Friday lunch time and our Server, Tristan was on the spot for beverage refills and answers to questions about the menu. The main dining room is expansive, open and airy and you get a sense of the buildings history fronting Main Street Fort Mill. We really enjoyed Improper Pig! They serve BBQ with an Asian twist. We made a meal of the chow bao buns, mac & cheese, and pork rolls. By the time the nachos arrived, we were full! The pork rolls were absolutely delicious and the sauces that come with them really took the flavor up a notch. Bao buns aren't really my thing but they were really good too with the spicy hoisin sauce! The pulled pork was juicy and flavorful. The brisket was tender and but had a really smoky flavor that was a little too much for me. Next time we go, we will definitely order the pork rolls again, but I want to try more things on their menu. read more

I am a Fort Mill local and often take my kids to this restaurant for quality family time. Over the years, we've never had any issues; the service and food have always been great. However, today was different. The server and manager were rude, making my 6-year-old cry over playing with a small plastic pumpkin decoration. They claimed they had warned us, but we never heard it. They told my children not to touch the decorations and disciplined them in front of me, saying, "since your father is not telling you... (I will)," which I found completely inappropriate. I questioned why this was a big deal in a family-friendly restaurant since my child wasn't causing any disturbance. The manager, DARIAN GREENE, made rude comments after I complained about our treatment. When I expressed my concerns, she offered to cover the bill to "help the sour taste in your mouth." - very rude! As we were leaving, they started filming and taking pictures of us as if we were criminals. Another person claiming to be the manager (the cook) walked out of the kitchen defending the staff's behavior and questioned my parenting skills over a simple Halloween ornament. I wanted a logical explanation for this treatment. It was a bizarre experience, and I can't understand how any business can afford to treat customers like this. I hope the owner addresses this issue and that the staff apologizes to my child. Despite this incident, I have no complaints about the food or atmosphere. We came here for dinner one week night and was happy to find decent bbq. The interior of the restaurant is well lit in the main dining room, but we opted to sit at the bar which can seat up 8 people near the kitchen. The service was good as the bartender did a good job consistently checking on us. We started with the fried pork skins (chicharrones) which were surprisingly very delicious. They came out fresh and as we ordered with the bbq rub on the side. I never had blue cheese with my chicharrones but I have to say it is a great addition to the dish. For my main course I had the brisket sandwich which was OK my only complaint is I wish the meat was a little more tender and moist. I just love the space...ode to the historic building with touches of industrial mod decor. Service was very good and attentive. Everything we ordered was delicious! And large portions. Disappointed I didn't take pics. My husband and 2 boys all ordered the Caesar Salad to start, and we shared hush puppies and sweet potato fries. I ordered the salmon beet salad (added bacon). Salmon was flavorful and cooked perfectly. Full of flavor! My husband ordered the brisket sandwich and enjoyed. Each of my boys ordered the sirloin steak with fries. Home cut thin potatoes, width just the right amount of cheese and chicken. Slightly salty with complemented the beer. I ordered the bao steam buns with pork, which were delicious. The steam bun was airy and not heavy at all and the slaw was sweet & tangy. This is a great place to go with a group. The Mac & cheese burger was what a few of the 16 year old boys ordered & they were unable to finish it, which is saying something. I've been to this restaurant at the Cotswold location way back, but heard that location is now closed. Luckily, the owner opened a new location in the Providence Road area, as well as one in Fort Mill. For some reason I expected a dive, but the Fort Mill location was surprisingly cuter than the one at the old Cotswold location. In fact, I found the place very sweet and inviting...with a wide open layout and high ceilings. Great, upbeat overhead music too. Guess you can say that this is an upscaled BBQ restaurant? I thought the Mac 'n Cheese w/ Pork was unique to Flipside in Rock Hill (and Fort Mill), but realized that here at The Improper Pig, they also had their fancy version, called the Fern Bowl, which also came with Cole Slaw...so I just had to try it! I really liked the great, big, comfort food presentation...in a huge bowl. I began porking it down right away, but realized that it was way too bland. I then noticed that the table was equipped with a variety of BBQ sauce bottles, so I tried several varieties...but sadly, I just didn't love the taste of any of the sauces. Also, the Mac 'n Cheese was a bit too cheesy? Oh well. I did notice that their menu had many tantalizing items...a fairly rich selection of Southern American favorites. Definitely need to bring my Southern American husband over with me next time...he's sure to love it, probably a tad more than I did. Overall, I really liked this restaurant and what they had to offer (all at very reasonable pricing too). The service was spot on as well. Although I didn't love the flavor of the Fern Bowl, I did love the concept and the presentation, including the generous addition of Cole Slaw as sides. I'll probably try something else next time. Again, although I didn't love the food that I ordered, I did like many things about this restaurant, so think it deserves 4 stars. Highly recommended! We stumbled across The Improper Pig after taking a wrong turn, late on a rainy night during a vacation in the region over a year ago. I just stumbled across the menu we saved, and remembered my promise to write a review about the excellent food and terrific service we experienced. Pulled pork, brisket, andouille sausage, ribs, and a selection of six BBQ sauces! I'm a native southerner, so we bought bottles of BBQ sauce to take "home" to the Midwest, and wish now we'd bought more. Terrific food; terrific service (Thanks, McKenzie!); upbeat atmosphere in a simple, clean, attractive space. We'll try to get lost on purpose next time we're out East. read more

This is my favorite restaurant in Fort Mill. It's where I go whenever it's my choice. The salads are fantastic. The hush puppies are perfection. The cobbler converts even the non-fruit lover.
