We sat outside at the bar and really enjoyed chatting with the bartenders--Dillon and Clyde were fantastic. They made great recommendations and were very attentive. We chose your restaurant to celebrate a birthday, and while there were positive aspects, a few issues detracted from our experience. On the positive side, parking was readily available, and the hostess team was very polite and gracious. He kindly sat us inside to escape the heat, and we really enjoyed the cool atmosphere and Hawaii-inspired decor. However, we encountered several issues during our visit: - The Table: We were seated at a very wobbly table and had to use napkins to stabilize it ourselves. - The Service: Our waitress was quite slow. Additionally, when explaining the drink options, she explicitly advised us against ordering the Navy Grog on the list, stating that it tasted like ship water. - The Drinks: Based on the celebration, we decided to split the "South Seas Pearl." We found the drink to be overwhelming, and given the premium price tag, we expected the quality to better match the cost. Even Dave loves the menu, the doggy menu. He's happy full off the three doggy tacos and a big bowl of ice water! We love the Sesame Chile Shrimp and Spicy Peanut Chicken bowls. And the Pele Sauce is amazing for someone who loves it hot. Dillion, Shelly and Clyde are always a treat at the bar as I continue my treasure map of drinks promotion. Can't wait for my shirt from it in January. Hands down the best place when it rains, the back covered patio feels extra tropical and brings some sunshine to a raining day. They have ukulele nights sometimes, like karaoke but they play the ukulele too. Hearing a lady sing bare naked ladies to a ukulele was pretty amazing. We like the environment here. And the service has always been great! The drinks are strong, and while they are spendy, they are pretty good. We've only been twice: the first time was just for drinks and the second time was for dinner and drinks. I think I would go there again if there was a band or good live entertainment playing. I would go for drinks, and maybe an appetiser, but I don't think for dinner again. We had a party of five and no one particularly loved their meals. The Honu is a hidden gem in Dunedin! Once you are inside, you are transported to a legit Tiki bar! The décor is fun and eclectic, and there is plenty of outdoor seating in the back. I sat at the bar and had friendly service. I ordered the Ube Colada (mocktail) and the mixed plate, which came with Huli Huli chicken, Kalua pork, sushi rice, and potato-mac salad. I'm a huge fan of tiki bars so I was excited to check this place out. Their outdoor area out back was very tropical and fun to hang out in. Loved their fun cocktail menu but not many options besides rum drinks. One problem with this place was their water. I know it's weird to complain about this but it tasted so bad. Chemically and like chlorine. The tuna wontons were also very odd. It didn't really taste like tuna at all. So yeah, loved the vibes of this place! Just a few minor issues. The back area is 21+ only, and is set up like a giant tiki bar with lots of tables, and seating for large crowds. Has a corner stage, where they have life music on Fridays and Saturdays. Fun vibe and delicious drinks. The outside front of the house is geared towards family, more tables and a kid friendly area. Now, when you go into the inside area, is like walking into a 60's Hawaiian move set. Great music, awesome decore, and fun mural. The food was delicious, ordered the Mixed Plate which was really good. Huli Huli chicken, Kalua pork, sushi rice, and an amazing potato-mac salad. You need to get a side of Pele's spicy sauce to dunk your pork in. If you love spicy sauces, this one won't disappoint. Ordered the Humuhumunukunukuapua' a... have fun saying that to the server hahaha. Pan-seared Hawaiian fish, topped with grilled pineapple, over black rice, served with a side salad. The fish was red snapper, cooked to perfection. Also got an order of the coleslaw, which is sweet and had pineapple, very good. Drink menu is plentiful, including a large selection of Rums. A little touristy vibes, overpriced food and drinks with a tropical vacation vibe, the food is meh. The last time we went the server seemed a little bothered to be serving or took her job too seriously idk. Thursday night we gathered for a night out for the Ladies in Skyloch Villas. A monthly event for the golf cart group. This month we went to Honu in Dunedin. There were 22 in the group. Honu had us set up all together in their beautiful outside patio a beautiful evening event. I had a delicious Blueberry Sangria a great choice. For dinner A Salmon dish that tasted amazing and of course we eat first with our eyes the presentation was beautiful. Okay: the Honu is a tiki bar, not a beach bar. What's the difference? They both have thatching and the occasional carved idol, right? Yeah, but the drinks are qualitatively different. Beach bars serve boat drinks: frozen daiquiris, pina coladas, Coronas with lime wedges. Tampa Bay has a lot of beach bars. Tiki bars serve complicated alcohol fantasies. Take the Honu Punch pictured: the menu description reads "Planteray Pineapple, 3 Star White & Dark, JDT Velvet Falernum, Lime, Lemon, Guava, Lilikoi, Pineapple, Orange, Agave Cinnamon Syrup, Angostura Bitters". Tampa Bay has very, very few tiki bars. Fortunately, the Honu is a *great* tiki bar. Their original drinks are good. Their classic drinks are good. And, their ambiance is uniquely Floridian, in the good way: the tiki bar is fully outside. (Most classic tiki bars tend to be dimly lit and fully enclosed; if you want that experience in Tampa, go to Morgan's Cove. But that's a different review.) The service is quick and attentive, and the bartenders are fun to talk to. Do be aware of one downside of an outside bar full of syrups: you may be visited by bees. They probably won't bother you, but don't let them have any mai tais. The Honu is *also* a great restaurant, though. On various visits I've had their Spam musubi (IYKYK), their take on a kalua pork plate lunch, the spicy peanut chicken rice bowl, and the Huli Huli chicken "stack" (a rice and greens bowl). It's all been good, fresh, and flavorful. There's only a small amount of parking right at the Honu, but finding free parking in downtown Dunedin within a short distance is always pretty easy--and it's one of the nicest and most walkable downtowns in Tampa Bay. read more

It's a super cute outdoor space and a great location in Dunedin. The food was good no complaints there but I did get served a drink that tasted like soap. But they were kind enough to come and exchange it for me for something different. They agreed it wasn't right so I appreciate the fact that they came and fixed it. The service was really amazing. The guy was super chill. Nice to talk to very knowledgeable about the rum, which apparently this place is famous for. I've been wanting to try this place for a while. They have some parking in the side of the place for convenience but tons of parking near by. The inside eating area is small with 4 tables but they have plenty of outside seating. In the back they have a tiki bar and I wish we would've sat there because they had a live band and was very lively but we weren't told about it until the end of our meal. The food is very good, we got down musubi which could've had more of a sauce on it to make it a little less dry but still good. I ordered the pork plate and it wasn't dry and very good. The chicken peanut curry bowl was always delicious and the best meal at our table. Super friendly with our server answering all our questions and the drink recommendations were excellent choices. Outside there is a tiki bar with other seating and inside there is a quaint dining area for those who prefer less action. The place has a nice vibe. They had lots of sitting inside and outside. We sat outside as it was a nice day and there was plenty of shade. Service was slow but our server was supper nice. They do warn you before you're seated "the world is short staffed so please be patient" . I had two drinks and the tuna wontons. The 3 dots and a dash was ok but the flight to Hawaii was better. The wontons were also just ok. They weren' the best but they weren't the worst and I would order them again. Now here is where they lost me. I know I'll get hate for this. Our table spilled a drink this happen minutes after our sever brought it as a result of the uneven tables in the patio area. This wasn't the result of a loud and rowdy drunk group no judgement. In any case we got charged for the replacement drink. With the amount of money we spent there would it have killed you to comp us the spilled drink. Added after response from business which I appreciate. Thank you I've decided to update my review this is a first for me. While I understand the importance of policies, I do feel there should be a reasonable threshold for how much a restaurant or bar is willing to comp in the event of an accident, regardless of who's at fault. In this case, I don't think replacing a $15 drink would have been too much of a gesture, especially considering the guest spilled it seconds after receiving it. If anything, when the guest requests a replacement, it would be nice for them to know upfront that they will be charged. I've been dying to try this place. Finally went in for a late lunch. Love the venue. Airy outdoor patio. Started with a Tahitian Limeade. It was delicious. Cool and refreshing. Would come back just for that. We ordered the edamame dumplings. Loved them. Needed another couple of plates of those. Then had the natchos. Loved them. Cool chill spot. Wife and I have passed this location many many times so tonight we decided to stop in for dinner. You have tithe option to sit outside, inside and tikibar seating area. We opted to sit inside due to potential rain. Inside was quiet with lots of Hawaiian decor from floor to ceiling. According to our server they have 500 rum drinks to choose from. We are not much of a drinker so we passed on that. They have a small menu that is dedicated to Hawaiian flavors. We ordered PuPu platter and mixed plate. Both were full of flavor and the Pupu platter comes with a little grill to reheat you protein in case it gets cold because you're chitchatting. Service was friendly and quick. Definitely an experience we didn't expect with the mini grill. We will be back to try other items on the menu. read more

Respectfully, this was a pretty bad experience. I ordered takeout, received it right on time and ate it immediately at a nearby bench (maybe 5 minutes from pick up to eating), and it was a disappointing meal. The musubi was clearly made long before with mushy rice and soggy seaweed, the loco moco's gravy was solidified and the rice was the same as the musubi - mushy with the occasional stale undercooked bit - and the furikake fries were stale and a bit too wasabi forward - which admittedly is a preference thing. I don't normally review but felt that the $45 price tag for a genuinely bad meal deserved some thought. The place looked cool, and hopefully the quality issues were a one time thing - but considering the rice's condition it seems like the quality would carry over for the whole batch. read more

The food is decent, the atmosphere is nice, but who ever manages staff is a terror. We were visit Dunedin regularly and I've literally never seen as much turnover anywhere as I have at this place. We were there the other day and they made a hostess cry. The girl was a child- definitely not an adult and it was incredibly uncomfortable to watch. Have been waiting to try Honu, and dined on a Thursday night. Live music was very nice in the back dining area. Our group enjoyed their Mai Tais, and my designated driver water was outstanding. Our server was terrific. I ordered the Mixed Plate and the chicken was hot and had a bit if zing to it. The pork left something to be desired. I felt it was a bit on the dry side. Friends brought us for our first visit to The Honu. It had just finished pouring down rain, and we had planned to sit outside at the Tiki bar. The tables outside the hut were sopped and the bar full, but when two people got up, staff quickly cleaned up the area and made us welcome, as did the other patrons (regulars?) at the bar. The decor was tropical and had a super fun, Hawaii vibe which was very inviting and really made us feel comfortable. We were just there for drinks, but boy were the fantastic. We had the Mai Tai, Jungle Bird, and Zombie, all of which not only were visually beautiful, but were delicious. Toward the end, our friend ordered a tasting of 4 Rums. The bartender was particularly knowledgeable about all the rums and explained the flavor profiles and reason for her selections for us. Afterwards, she had us sniff test a couple of other rums and explained the background of them. All the staff was super friendly and really knew their drinks. This was our third visit to Honu. The first two meals were nice experiences, so we decided to visit again. This visit was not as good unfortunately. My husband and I both ordered the Humuhumu fish dinner as we had in the past which featured a flakey white Hawaiian fish. This time we were advised that they didn't have the featured fish but did have Black Cod an excellent fish, so we went with it. When the dinner arrived we started to eat and immediately knew it was Mahi. We asked our server to check on that and she came back to advise that the cook made a mistake and gave us the Mahi instead. Server informed us they would adjust the bill to make it right. What we learned at the end was that the Black Cod was an upsell and that they would adjust the entree down to the original $28 menu charge. We were disappointed in the meal in general (Mahi was dry) and that we were not told the Black Cod was an uncharge to $34 and not $28 menu price to begin with :( After talking to the manager we did get an apology but not so much satisfaction. 1st time here and I'll go back. I've been on a hunt to find legit Poke in the greater area. Everything is a build your own poke salad type of place. Not here! Pre-marinated and seasoned poke!
