Such an enjoyable place with lots of beauty, family entertainment, and great eats! We called ahead and spoke with Mandy who was so kind and very helpful. We were visiting from out of town and wanted to be sure we had the correct hours of operation and instructions to pre-order a couple of their pies. Mandy was great and when we arrived on our pick-up day and time, the pies were ready to go for us, packaged with care and attention for our drive ahead (thanks to Linda as well!). While there, we wandered the grounds and thouroughly enjoyed everything. I always love and appreciate seeing colonial period architecture. Such a lovely themed restaurant! We had the shepherds pie, corn chowder in a bread bowl, and the Oak Glen strawberry cider. Everything was genuinely so good! Even the complimentary bread was baked fresh and a unique taste- in a good way! The shepherds pie was perfectly seasoning, with the meat flavor carrying through the dish even when I only sampled the mashed potato part. The corn chowder was honestly one of the best soups I've had in my life, it was comforting and filling yet still light, with plenty of veggies (corn, potatoes) throughout- I think it was meant to include celery but maybe they ran out today? But I'm happy mine didn't come with celery haha! The waitress recommended the Oak Glen brand as it was the most popular, and gave us options between the seasonal, the "lighter flavor", and strawberry- we were very happy with the strawberry flavor!! The staff were friendly and so cute staying in character. They greeted & seated us as soon as we stepped in. Brought us waters and a complimentary bread bowl with an abundance of butter (some restaurants barely give any). what a wonderful night! We went for the Valentine's Dinner and it was so very special! There is love, care, and kindness in their planning and execution! We thoroughly enjoyed every prepared dish, the live music, the lovely atmosphere and the professional service and hospitality! We will make sure to return for their other holiday specials for sure! One suggestion: the signs at night are not clear so the entrance & knowing where to go wasn't easily found. luckily we found another car that knew where to go and we turned back and followed. Also, the path to walk in wasn't easy to see either so we walked in the dark. Later as we left, we saw where we should have walked through but it isn't clear to see that from the parking area. More lighting and signage for the event would really help! It's very hard these days to say it was worth every penny. This event surely was! The food is great and so is the service. We stop in a few times every year when we are in town. We really miss when it was a full service restaurant with a little bigger menu and folks dressed in period clothing. All the food is great. It's just not good anymore. We won't be returning unless there's some big changes made. The food is expensive but bland. You have to sit outside and fight the wasps while there's a perfectly good indoor seating area left empty because they won't let you sit in there. They had barely any food available at lunchtime (we were one of the first groups in line) and the staff are disorganized, harried, and take so long to take and fill an order (some of us were told they were out of stuff and then another person in our group was told something different when it was their turn to order). We ended up having to eat in the car just to escape the wasps. It's sad because this place used to be SO good. Now it's just overpriced hospital cafeteria food. Then she asked me what I wanted. I said chicken pot pie. She said that they can make it in about half a hour. NEVER HAPPENED. Why lie? I waited an hour and a half. Then it came out. What an embarrassing tasting chicken pot pie. Granted the pot pie had a few tasty small strands of shredded chicken but that's where it ends. There was three small one inch square cube potatoes that were slightly hard...some pease and some sauce. Crust was ok I guess but not appealing... see photo. Apple pie wasn't good. Some pieces were hard and very little apples were inside. And the ice cream that came with it was kind of thick. The strawberry ice tea was good. Also some of the tables were dirty. Chairs and tables strewn everywhere in the covered patio area. The building is nice to look at since it's old and has history. But as far as food... I don't know why I came here today. It's interesting that this business doesn't associate itself to being located inside Riley's farm on this page. We wanted a day trip to Oak Glen and to actively avoid Riley's farm for a variety of reasons (anti-mask, anti-vaccine, them buying flight tickets during COVID to storm the capitol, warped depictions of war re-enactions, etc). Not only could we not avoid it because their misleading advertising, the menu has been cut by more than half. The only things you are allowed to order is what is listed on the bakery menu. Anything that isn't a bakery or lunch time item is not eligible to order. When I asked if entrees are available (the main reason we chose this specific restaurant) the cashier was dismissive and spoke over the first cashier I was asking. It all just left a bad taste in my mouth so we left without ordering after an hour and a half drive. Also, their waters are $3. In true Riley's farm fashion, they will make sure to put a nice bow on sucking your wallet dry. read more

We've been to this restaurant and other events for a lot of years but just had our last meal there earlier today. No inside seating anymore--because of COVID????--is what we were told but you could order your food at the outside window and sit in their patio area. Well, it was in the low 40's when they made this offer but did say yes when I asked if we could sit indoors. Very dim lighting and the tables showed evidence of earlier meals with no one bussing tables. The prices were horrendous for meager food. BTW...YOU NEED TO REMOVE THE DINNER MENU FROM YELP SINCE YOU DON'T SERVE IT ANYMORE (the reduced menu is available on their website). We got 2 slices of apple pie to go and were surprised they were the last 2...at 12:30 PM? Got home and my slice looked like it was cobbled together from some leftover pieces in the pie pan. Can't believe that I haven't reviewed the Hawk's Head before! Where else in Southern California can you have a Colonial American experience? The first time we came to Oak Glen might have been a Sunday and Riley's Farm was closed. Driving by the colonial building that houses the Publick House, I sensed that it was something special. Later research revealed its nature as a dining establishment with historic flare. The next visit to Oak Glen, we made a point to dine there. We brought friends with us, and thoroughly enjoyed the rustic surroundings and hearty, simple food. Simple is a complement in this case. It's just straight-ahead deliciousness without pretentiousness. Over several trips, I've enjoyed the mac & cheese and the ham meal. Yesterday, Dear Hubby and I split a bowl of excellent corn chowder and a ham sandwich with sides of pasta salad and chunky apple sauce. Our friend chose the Harvest Salad, a mountain of greens and toppings including apples (natch). Our server was delightful, quick with a smile and a charming saying or two. Live music plays in the large room during meal time. Flickering candles are the main light source in the all wood space filled with families, couples, and groups of friends. Clad in Revolutionary War-era style clothing, the wait staff add to the ambience. Outside in the front of the Publick House, soldiers on both sides of the conflict might wander by while you're waiting for a table. The Bakery adjoins the restaurant, with multiple types of savory and sweet offerings, including Sally Lund bread loaves, and their famous apple pie. A new hard cider tasting garden / patio is a new addition with light fare and a beautiful setting. We highly recommend this unique opportunity to travel back in time, so close to home! read more

We took some cool photos outside and enjoyed some classic comfort food- maple glazed ham and potatoes, homemade bread and butter, apple honeyed mead, and apple pie with a generous amount of vanilla ice cream. This was our first time tasting mead, and it was unique. A lot lighter than I expected (I thought mead would taste thick and unfiltered), with lots of different flavors. First time for all of us here at The Hawks Head Publick House and Rileys Farm! We were fortunate enough to only have about an hour wait when we signed in, they gave us a buzzer so we went and walked around the grounds and did some tomahawk throwing, checking out the gift shop and enjoying the grounds while we waited. The food was great! Unfortunately they didn't have the Hamburg Steak which I talked everyone at my table to get! So my second choice was the Cider Baked Ham which the rest of my table ordered as well! The corn cake was pure heaven and the ham was tasty, a bit dry but good and I ate it all! The star of the show was the appetizer of Stilton Cheese served with toasted bread and sliced apples. Warm Cheese and apples? YESSSS!!!! Unfortunately the appetizer came out AFTER the entree of Ham were brought out. We still ate it all! I had the pumpkin pie for dessert but my friends Apple Dumpling looked so much better!!! The pie was great and I ate it all so don't let that deter you! But! That Apple Dumpling steaming heat!!!! I got a taste and it was FABULOUS!!!! We all ordered some dessert to go and some unbaked chicken pot pies to go so we didn't have to wait in the crazy line outside for the bakery items to go! We were able to get them as we were sitting and having a great lunch! The place was crowded! It was a Saturday! People were getting angry at the staff for the wait times. What do you expect!? We waited for an hour because we heard this place was worth it. Where else will you get a real colonial restaurant experience in So Cal? The kids ran around in the grass until it was time to be seated. We sat. And sat. And sat. And sat. And sat. Until I asked someone if we could have our server come take our order. I was sad to see that it was the young man that walked by us a million times without even looking at us. Man, bad service always gets me all the time. So we ordered, the chicken pot pie was amaze and I would go back to have it again. The chicken pot pie was delicious it was the best thing we order also the cheese plate I forgot the name but it is highly recommended on here and that's why I ordered it & it was just as good as people said it has a strong taste but it is delicious especially with the cold crisp apples that accompanies that warm melted cheese. We also had the bratwurst sandwich it was pretty good but not as good as the chicken pot pie. Service was good and they were friendly the reason for four stars is because they close so early at 5 and I wanted to get the famous Apple pie to go home. I think 7 would be a more reasonable time to close at the earliest. Overall this is a great date spot for a family or a couple. INSANE waits on the weekend - we arrived at noon on a Saturday and weren't seated until 1:40pm! And, you're not able to make reservations... but you do get a buzzer when you check in, and you can wander quite a ways with it. We actually walked up to another apple farm for about an hour to pass the time. That said - the food is some of the best you can get in Oak Glen. There's a sausage and apple appetizer that's incredibly tasty, and was basically the reason we were willing to wait. Our server took a long time to get to us, but that was actually the management's fault, as two tables were seated in his section while he was on a break. He was very apologetic and quick once he returned. They were out of ice when we first sat down, and our food took a while, but the ambiance is cute and kitschy, and there's fun music while you wait. It's worth a visit, but I can't recommend enough going on a weekday, or really early on a weekend. They're also closed on Sundays, which is slightly annoying in a SUPER touristy town. read more

We came to Riley's Farm because we heard it was a pretty unique place where employees don period clothing and even try to emulate their ancestors' speech. It's a throw back to a simpler time and place, where strawberries are ripe for the picking and you can indulge on fresh baked pies and apple cider. We expected all that, but what we didn't expect was to have the awesomenest breakfast in recent history. There's nothing outrageous about their offerings; it's more about the quality and wholesomeness of the food than the creativity that goes into it. It all started with a freakin' amazing cup of joe, which David, our server, just kept coming. He was very in tune and I think he sensed my desperate need for wakefulness. Now, I'm picky about my coffee: I like my dark roast ground, pressed and served a special way. These folks didn't quite go that far, but whatever they did was pretty darn wow for me to keep asking for more. Along with my coffee, I had an order of thick and sinful French Toast and the most crispy and delicious bacon I've had in a very long time. The butter is whipped, of course. The syrup, maple goodness, what else? My mother had eggs benedict (yum) accompanied by hash brown perfection. I know. I traded her a piece of my French Toast for one of her eggs and some potato. I'm no dummy. In terms of David, I can't say enough good things about him. He's the epitome of the server you want to encounter every time you eat out. Can I clone you? Well, we may need to upgrade your wardrobe... Hawks Head Tavern is well worth a trip to the mountains for fresh air and a great breakfast. I know I want to do this again. Come here every year in the fall during apple season. I always look forward to my meal here. Sometimes service can be really slow unfortunately, but the food has always been great. Get both appetizers! The stilton cheese is so good, but it's a very strong tasting cheese, like a blue cheese. The sausage and apples is really good too! I always get their chicken pot pie, and I'm not a fan of green beans, but the ones that come with the meal are delicious! They also give you a side of homemade applesauce, definately tastes like fresh apples. Usually they have live colonial music, and the staff are dressed up in colonial attire, makes you feel like you took a step back in time. While picking up an apple pie (delicious) at Riley's Farm, we decided to have a late lunch at the Hawk's Head restaurant. I'm giving 1 star for the decor, and 1 start for the live music playing in the corner of the restaurant. The decor is very nice, colonial period, and the servers all dress in period attire. Looked like a very fun restaurant. The menu is very limited. The prices are high, and the portion size is small. The chicken pot pie was alright, the Mac & Cheese needed serious help. The corn chowder soup was good. Overall the food was lacking in flavor, taste and quality. The server was nice, but inept. After he took our order we never saw him again until he brought our food, which took a very long time despite not be busy. Half of the items were wrong, and some were returned. He blamed the kitchen, but he should have checked to make sure it was correct when he brought it to us. An appetizer is served before the main meal, not at the same time. If you decided to eat here, don't expect much in service, quality, or taste. read more

This restaurant is truly a magical place! I love the colonial theme & how they decorated the place & the outfits they all wear. The food is all made fresh there & tasted yummy. I came with my whole family so we ordered a lot, but some things I would recommend are the corn chowder in a bread bowl & the smoked ham plate. All wood furniture, dark, waitress wear traditional clothing and the music playing matches the time era. Really cool theme they have going on. For the food, their menu is very simple. We arrived for breakfast and had from 6 items to choose from. My wife had the eggs benedict and I went with a French toast with applesauce, bacon and an o.j. The food was very good, the portion was perfect and the price was very affordable. Everything came out to about $26.50. We stumbled upon this place after reading all the reviews. We asked to sit outside because we had our precious little dog Sofia. We got seated within 20 minutes on a Saturday around 2pm. I am a restaurant owner and I was extremely pleased with our waitress Ericka. She was very pleasant, knowledgeable, and extremely attentive. She made our first time visit very memorable. My fiancé ordered the pot pie with green beans, my daughter ordered the hot dog with sweet potato fries and I ordered the forfar birdie. It was really good! Tasted like a shredded beef empanada! Highly recommend the Revolutionary Tavern Nights Dinner show. It was an immersive event, with staff wearing colonial period costumes, music, speech and they all stayed in character during the entire dinner. Yes, the dinner guests were throwing the Tomahawk and the winner won a 3lbs Apply Pie! From the ambiance, the set up, the music, the waitresses in costume, the tables have glass lanterns with actual candles, the era rifles on the wall, the chilled silver mugs your drinks come in, the silverware, the menus, the entire place does not skip a beat on their commitment to the cause. We didn't wait long at all for our food after ordering, and let me just tell you all, that this food was hands down the best damn food I've gotten anywhere in a really really good while. You get a basket of this most incredible bread I've never had anywhere and butter that tastes like it was freshly churned. I ordered the chicken pot pie which comes with fresh seasoned green beans and homemade fresh apple sauce. All I can say is OH MY LANTA! I ate every bite! It was absolute heaven! And let me also add that they don't skimp on portions mmk? Everything tasted so fresh, so wholesome, and so unlike anything I've ever eaten at any restaurant I've ever been to. After an absolutely delightful day that included a trip to apple country, Oak Glen, picking up some jugs of great apple cider, and doing the usual touristy stuff, our family made our way to this delightfully charming old English public house for an early dinner. We love Oak Glen. Riley's Farm, where Hawk's Head is located, is noted for their special historical presentations that span the calendar. For years we have subscribed to their emails and newsletters from Mr. Riley himself, inviting us to experience the frivolity, music, and good food the farm has to offer, especially around any holiday. They love reasons to celebrate, and have many, but we never came . Well, we finally made it on a non-tourist packed weekday. And I ask myself, why did I let this experience wait so long? If it weren't for my Yelp friend, Princess Peach N, and her recent delightful review and kind personal messages, I would probably still be stalling. Early December. No snow yet. Just crisp clean air, beautiful bucolic surroundings and hilly, winding roads. The charm of the old white farmhouse and barns, surrounded by large grassy areas (that play a role in their historical reinactments), ancient apple trees, a little brook and old fashioned pond, and old apple farm implements are just for starters. You step inside and find yourself transported to an 18th century Colonial pub, with old wooden planked floors and benched tables. Because everything is Christmasy, windows were cheerfully adorned with old fashioned strings of drying apple rings, popcorn and cranberry garlands, red ribbons and wreathes, draped cedar branches hanging on the exposed beams and windows. The old fashioned candle lanterns and pewter mugs were set on wooden tables, and the blackened brick fireplace that is big enough for a person to stand in, is cautiously enclosed by a heavy black iron door. Add to that the delightfully costumed servers and old English tongue spoken, and you have found a real treasure. During the late fall/winter season, they tend to close early, but still provide hearty meals that you can expect on a dinner menu. We came at 3 pm since they closed at 4. Our food choices: A hearty bowl of CORN CHOWDER. Wonderful, wonderful! Don't know what is in it, other than corn, cream, and potato, but it was uniquely seasoned and creamy. CIDER BAKED HAM. The absolute best. Smokey, tender chunks with a wonderfully not-too-sweet clove infused glaze. Generously plated with the most deliciously seasoned haricot verts and garlic mashed potatoes. I would order this ham in a heartbeat. CHICKEN POT PIE. You must order this one too. Think..."must share!" The most flakey buttery crust, with huge chunks of chicken, potato, peas and carrots in a beautifully herbed, creamy sauce. Also served with copious haricot verts. ROAST BEEF SANDWICH. This was the only fail, and unfortunately I do not remember the exact name. It was a sliced beef on white toasted bread, with cheese, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes. The beef was dry, and with the other food so wonderful, it paled in comparison. And the accompanying pasta salad was ordinary. A huge loaf of their Sally Lunn bread, and butter was placed on our table, as if we did not have enough food. Delicious. We had told our fine server, Hannah, who recently married into the Riley family, that this was our first meal here, and she offered us a piece of apple pie, compliments of the house. What she failed to mention was, this was a quarter of an entire pie, streusel topped, made sinfully better by topping it with three scoops of the best vanilla ice cream and homemade buttery caramel sauce. It was cinnamony and almost tart, the best of everything. We loved coming here. Regret it took so long. And will keep coming back now that we know. It's Christmas time right now and the surrounding Riley's farm sets a beautiful scene for this restaurant. Yellow leaves on the ground... Christmas trees for sale. Apple pressing to make your own cider is fun. The restaurant itself hosts a live folk duo. They play upbeat tunes. The tables have candle lanterns as centerpieces. If you're looking for a trip back in time to the 18th Century, you've come to the right place. Traditional American fare, traditional music, and everyone dressed in period costumes. It's like going to Williamsburg without the five hour flight to DC. To top it off they serve locally brewed Hangar 24 beer from Redlands, freshly pressed Riley's Farm apple cider, and a variety of unusual bottled sodas - all served in frosty metal mugs. I would highly recommend the Stilton Cheese appetizer - creamy, Stilton goodness served with sweet Sally Lunn bread. The chicken pot pie was quite good as well with a wonderful, buttery crust that wasn't too heavy. All five of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Huzzah! read more

tl;dr: Amusement park lines (90 min wait for two). Maeloc and Stilton were terrific, pot pie disappointing, chowder in bread bowl horrible. Service felt surprisingly xenophobic. Perhaps only decent pitstop for miles... The lure of having a decent sit down meal amidst a day of visiting apple orchards was too good to pass up, but I guess everyone else knows that too. Nestled within the confines of Riley's Farm (NOT Riley's Apple Farm -- confusing I know), people were drawn by the carriage load it seemed to this 18th century recreation of a tavern, complete with wenches and stewards in colonial garb... The menu offerings were lightweight in number but attractive nevertheless. We had plenty of time to contemplate what we wanted because of the long hour and a half wait, there was no apparent advantage in being a party of two. Once we were seated, everything on the menu started looking even better, but annoyingly they seemed to forget about us. The minutes seemed to go tic tock as we each had time to go to the loo and enjoy the live musicians playing in the background before someone finally took notice that we were sitting there with our menus and no settings... We got our settings and ordered a couple of Maeloc hard dry ciders that iced up thin when poured into the ice cold pewter mugs. The Stilton Cheese was served warmed with nice seasonal apple wedges and toasty English bread. Then it seems we were ignored once more... Other guests that were seated after us were getting much better attention and service, having their food brought to them and finishing their meals before another one of the lasses took notice of us at which time I had the opportunity to ask what had become of the rest of our meal. Shortly thereafter they brought out half of our remaining order the celebrated Chicken Pot Pie. Hesitating because they hadn't brought out our corn chowder yet, I thought to wait until it came out. It took another ten minutes but not before I had to flag down the steward to go check on the bread bowl. People we shared the dining room with were finished and starting to leave... After yet another server brought out the Corn Chowder in a Bread Bowl, I looked at the poor excuse of a chowder. It was mostly potatoes and corn with very little chowder, it was obvious to me that they scraped what was left in the pot and presented it to us in a shallow hollowed out loaf. Then I had my first bite of the pot pie. I had expected something wonderful but the flavors and textures seemed muddled. Peeling back the top crust revealed a disappointing commercial pie tin but I probably shouldn't be too surprised, the whole experience started to reek of an amusement park experience where the help didn't seem to want to serve us and barely seemed to care... I would give this place only one star but I have to admit we loved the cold cider and the stilton and fresh apples. Tons of wasted potential... read more

When you step inside you are transported to a different time and place! Great live music, beautiful inside, amazing service and views! We shared a bottle of the Summer Reserve wine and it was a perfect afternoon treat! I ordered the Mac n Cheese with bacon and it was delicious! We also got the open faced braised beef sandwich. It was a delicious slice of sourdough topped with very tender braised beef, mashed potatoes, and a side of homemade gravy to pour over the top! Wow! A MUST VISIT ! Wanna step back in time for a bit ? Or do you wanna just step away from being in California ...well this place is for you ! Ok first of all this is the perfect time to go .. there's apples and the weather is just right not too cold and not too hot ! You're surrounded by nature and colonial era, the workers are also dressed up and super friendly ! Ok enough about that ... THIS RESTAURANT is so delicious it takes you back in time and your surrounded with history decor (I'm sure it's not the real things) but it really sets the mood of just stepping back in time for a bit . There's a live band ! When we were there I honestly didn't notice they were playing live until they finished a song and people started to clap ( whoops ) but anyways the food ! The menu was straight forward which I loved , I ordered the corn chowder and the chicken pot pie with a side of green beens and apple sauce ..... the corn chowder was delicious ... BUT the POT PIE WAS ONE OF THE BEST IVE EVER HAD , I'm such a big fan of chicken pot pie and this one took my number one spot ! It came hot! As soon as I poked through that flaky buttery crust steam came out , I seriously appreciate hot food lol I took my time eating it and even with people surround me with the same dish I got they finished it completely! I don't blame them because I couldn't stop eating it ! My husband ordered (I forgot the name ) but it was like a beef meatloaf with a side of mash potatoes and gingered carrots .... his plate was even good too ! ( side note if you order this it did take a while to come out ) worth the wait for both plates though . The waitress also told us the meat is from their local farm ! OH another recommendation is the hot cider ! It's sooo good ! We ended ordering outside the restaurant at one of the stores a half gallon of it because it was that good ! Over all experience was great pls pls pls don't over look this place ! I'm definitely coming back maybe try breakfast and also a good thing is to know that they have family size pot pies for sale and pies to Choose from like a 5lb. Apple pie! ( buying it next time !) Ordered: Corn Chowder - best part of the meal! Chicken Pot Pie - rather just have saved it for Marie Callender's Mac & Cheese - rather have Kraft than hard cheddar cheese on top of pasta Apple Pie - good, wasn't amazing, but good. Probably should have ordered it a la mode! Note, I did visit on a quite busy day in 4th of July, so maybe they were just really busy and not everything was on point? This does not stop me from eating here though because I love everything that Riley's Farm represent and teaches! The restaurant is cute! The use candles to light up the room. This restaurant truly transports you back to American colonial times! It is a wonderful experience! The restaurant is located on the gorgeous Riley's Farm which is a large farm with several orchards, old timey colonial activities, several livestock areas and a cute mercantile store. It is a beautiful farm that is so picturesque you feel like you're in New England! The fall foliage was unbelievably beautiful when I visited in late November. But nothing prepares you for how charming their Hawk's Head Public House Restaurant is! It's a grand colonial house that's been converted into a restaurant. It's full of dark woods and is only lit by candlelight. It is absolutely charming! It is decorated in very rustic wall hangings and paintings and truly resembles life during that time. The staff is all dressed in historically accurate attire and are super friendly. The menu is hearty American fare full of delicious country classics. I couldn't believe how cheap it was! And the portions are huge! I believe they have live entertainment on certain nights. This place is magical and must be visited! read more
