    Breakfast on the sun porch

I cannot say enough great things about The Hand Hotel. This was my second time staying and I cannot wait to come back again. The owner, Kat, is the sweetest, friendliest soul and wonderful conversation. We greatly enjoyed playing scrabble in front of the fireplace, walking down to the frozen over river, and enjoying a delicious breakfast in the sun room with the mascot of the Hand Hotel, a golden retriever named Hazel. The rooms are gorgeous and clean, and feel like you've taken a Time Machine to the old west. I have stayed in the School Marm room and the Silverheels room and both are beautiful and very comfortable. We'll be back soon!

We had a very nice evening at the Hand Hotel. It's relaxed, comfortable, friendly staff, good coffee and breakfast, fireplace, dogs, a wonderful patio on off the second floor. Close to numerous places with good food, live music, gift shops, and South Park City historic park. I will go back again.

Alright, so we stayed here recently and there is a mix of good and bad. We'll start with the good. The owner of the hotel Kat is probably one of the nicest people I've met in a long time. The common area of the hotel is actually used by guests and people talk to each other in front of a real deal wood fireplace. We didn't realize it was a purported haunted hotel until after we arrived in FairPlay. I'm not a big believer in ghosts since I need to see things to believe them. However, during our night there, I was laying in bed going to sleep when my headphones in on ear while watching YouTube. No headphone in on the side of my face against the pillow since it's uncomfortable. All of a sudden I felt an ice cold touch beneath my ear that had the headphone in. It was cold enough to send a shiver down my spine and caused me to sit up to look around. I couldn't feel anything press against my skin, just a super cold spot instantly. I could see around me just fine since my phone's screen was on. I thought I was getting pissed on like Butters. Nothing was there and I couldn't feel anything wet on my face. Others in our group thought they heard the door knob rattling in the night, but I didn't hear that one. Just your usual old building creaks, groans and rattling windows. So yeah, that was definitely weird. The bad: Housekeeping could probably do a little better of a job. While checking under the bed for grizzled toe sucking clowns, I found a woman's bra, a can of Skoal, and a baby's sock. Random, I know! You can imagine the fights that bra could have caused if someone's wife or girlfriend had found the bra. No matter how you try to deny having any knowledge about it, you're going to look guilty. Officer Barbrady will be coming to the Hand for a domestic in this week's episode of South Park... ...Or, in an alternate universe, imagine the guy scoops the bra up from under the edge of the bed and throws it into the dirty clothes bag in your suitcase assuming it's his wife or girlfriends. Most guys don't know shit about bras to do a forensic analysis on who it belongs to. The bra then makes it home and into the wash and finally into the put away pile. Good luck with your funeral when she pulls out some other bitches bra! Picture attached for proof! The rooms are a bit musty too. So if you're a bitch like me and have dust allergies, it can cause problems. Rooms can get hot or cold and you don't have control over the rooms temp since this is an old building without AC and there is some sort of central heating. Staff will adjust the temps but there isn't anyone there overnight. So ask for extra blankets if it's cold. I tried opening a window to let some must out, but it looked jammed shut. The beds feel like old spring mattresses. Over all, it's a cool place. Hopefully they fix it up a little more to increase the draw. I've been to a bunch of supposed haunted hotels and this is the first that anything substantial happened to me that I couldn't explain away.

My 10 year old son Dylan, and I went to the Hand to Ghost hunt! We actually got some activity and orb footage, but even more importantly the Hotel itself was just great! Pamela, made our trip AMAZING! She was hospitable and informative, and spent a lot of time with me and my son, talking paranormal activity, and the rich history of the Hotel, the Hand family, and Fairplay. One of the best Hotel stays we can remember. My wife is not into ghosts but we are all coming back in the Spring/Summer to stay for a family weekend and do South Park City Museum, (my son and I will still play ghost hunters, shhhh!)... Dylan and I thank the Hand Hotel, and Pamela for such a memorable stay! See you soon...

Great location for a good price. After coming off the Colorado Trail, my shuttle driver recommended the Hand Hotel as historic. It truly was that. The accommodations were rustic and nice. The bathroom and shower were awesome with great amenities. You have to expect that this place is historic, aka old. So the floors are creaky (they claim it is haunted :) ), the walls are thin, and it is a bit musty and dusty. I woke up the next morning with a stopped up nose and congestion. But the location was too good to pass up. The best is the breakfast. I sat next to the chef and kitchen worker. They make an amazing breakfast that is super well thought out. You look over the Blue River with bald eagles in view. That made it un-regrettable.

I don't know what the people are complaining about! This is a quaint B&B, built in the 1920's (couldn't find an exact date) with beautiful views, cute rooms (each with its own bathroom which is virtually unheard of for B&B's!!) and a wonderful breakfast. The rooms are smaller than a regular hotel, the walls are thin, and the building creaks- DUH! The building is 100 years old... I'm not that old and parts of me creak and groan these days. Mike is super friendly, shared info on gold panning and a rhubarb cake recipe from the 1800's with us. They are pet friendly, the room and bathroom was clean, and the other guests ranged from almost invisible to as colorful as a crazy quilt. If you are adventurous, enjoy the unique and historic, and love good food- especially rhubarb- the Hand Hotel is perfect. If you want a McHotel, don't waste your money or their time... Oh, and check out is 10:00 but the website says 11:00...

I found fireside online and it was by far the most affordable option in Breckenridge for a single night so I went for it in a two person dorm, and luckily I happened to be the only one in that room that night! The room was definitely snug but it was cozy and very comfortable and I slept very well. Finding the place was also very easy, they provide very clear instructions and there is plenty of parking at the church across the street (just mind their specific parking instructions and you won't have any trouble). Re: the interior: it's actually a very large place with two full baths and one half bath. I never even saw/heard another guest when I came but again it was late. The vibe was that it was a very comfy, chill place - they have soothing music playing over by the office door where the coffee/tea machines are, and there is a small kitchen and living room area. They had a real fire going in the living room area and there were games and books and lots of "things to do" brochures around, so truly it felt like being in a cozy cabin. I genuinely really loved that vibe. Not to mention it's quite close to the main road - you could easily walk but because it was raining heavily the night I came, I did drive all of 3 minutes to avoid walking 15 in the rain to the bar on Main Street I wanted to go to. They also sent me a text when i came in case i had questions, so they are available to help you. Overall - if you're coming and staying here for just a night or two and all you need is a bed/shower/safe space, this place is GREAT. Admittedly the rooms aren't big (at least mine wasn't), but again as a solo traveler it was fine. Would def rec to friends :)

Sturdy, grated outside steps lead to this suite, for safe access and for privacy. The location is unbeatable, just a 3-block walk to town and to all of the shops and restaurants. The "Free Ride" city bus stops in front of the Fireside Inn, and can take you to the Gondola and Breck Station, if you don't feel like making the 7-minute walk. [Tip: Epic Mountain Express shuttle vans from the airport can drop you directly at the Fireside Inn!] Our host Madi communicated beautifully before and during our visit. She and her family have put a lot of love and thought into making this a warm refuge from the cold and excitement that is Breckenridge.

When we…read morearranged for the rental we told Paul B., the owner/manager, that we would be arriving very late, around midnight. We were sent directions and instructions for getting into the cabin. That all worked great. However, when we entered the cabin, it was VERY cold, about 42 degrees F. We spent almost an hour trying to get the heat on. The instruction book said to turn the dial on the individual electric heaters to the right, clockwise. They were already turned up and the heaters were barely warm to the touch. We tried turning the dial to the left and the heaters went cold. So, we turned the dials back to the right and tried to start a fire (at 1AM, after a long day of travel). The only way to get a fire to stay lit was to leave the door of the wood stove open, which is not safe to do. Every time we closed the door the fire went out, despite how open or closed the air vent was on the stove. We finally gave up and found extra blankets and put on long underwear and fleece and tried to sleep. After about 5 hours of shivering in bed, we got up (the temperature in the cabin was up to a balmy 52) and made arrangements to stay at the Delaware Hotel in Leadville for the next 2 nights. We called Paul and told him of the heat problem and that we were checking out that morning. We later received an email from Paul apologizing for the problem with the heat and that a full refund would be made. He asked that we provide our CC number so he could process the refund. I called Paul several days later (when we returned home from the trip) to give him our CC information. Paul was very agitated and said he did not have a paper and pen to write it down and that I would have to call him later. The next time I called Paul, he did not answer, so I left a voice mail with my number; Paul never returned my call. The next day, my wife called Paul and he told her that same thing he told me, that he did not have a paper and pen to write with and she would have to call back another time. Paul did call her back later that day and left a message to call with the CC information so he could process the refund. I returned Paul's call about a half hour later and this is where it got interesting. Paul started the conversation by telling me there was nothing wrong with the heat and he couldn't help it if we did not know how to turn on an electric heater. He then told me it was not the policy to issue refunds. (This is after several times offering to refund and about 2 weeks time). Paul became very agitated and argumentative, telling me I was a "d*ck" (slang word for part of the male anatomy) because I didn't know how to turn on the heater in the cabin. After that, every time I tried to say something, Paul would interrupt me and start rambling. After being interrupted 5-6 times, I asked Paul if he was going to allow me to finish a sentence, he responded by asking if I would let him finish a sentence. (I felt like I was arguing with a 10-year-old). He then called me a "d*ck" a second time. Eventually, Paul took our CC information and said he would process a refund. So far, the refund has not happened so we initiated a dispute with our CC company with the email and voice mail we have from Paul claiming he would give us a refund.

I didn't really partake in the social atmosphere as I was very tired, and the people there seemed older. It is certainly not a young person party hostel. However, my friend I came with previously came a year ago and made good friends. The main issue that my friend and I felt made our stay uncomfortable was the restrooms. They don't have stall doors for the toilets. They just have a flimsy curtain that you can't secure in place, which was super awkward and made me feel on edge every time I was in there. Their showers also don't have doors, but that is more acceptable. We stayed in an 8-bed mixed dorm, and it was comfortable. I really liked how they have full-size vertical lockers with keys that you can use for storage. When we checked in, they said one of us had to be on the bottom bunk and one on the top. It worked out for us, but if there are other beds available it doesn't seem fair if both people have a preference for a bottom bunk just because you are friends. People in hostels are usually solo travelers anyways and need to share a bunk bed combo with a stranger.

It has a big kitchen, big living room, big lawn, and big den downstairs with TV/couches and a ping pong table. It's clean-ish, pretty much your standard hostel. The showers were a pleasant surprise - quite clean actually on the ladies' side so that was a huge relief! The beds were simple bunks in the room I was in, and I was top bunk. Low ceiling so I couldn't sit all the way up but I could most way; i was also right by a water pipe so I could hear water running every time someone showered etc, but I stilled crashed from exhaustion/Im a heavy-ish sleeper. The room was a bit warm; with the window open it was way too cold so it was a wee bit stuffy but again nothing too bad. I slept fine overall, it was pretty decent as far as a hostel experience goes. Overall - if you're coming in late and leaving early for like 1 night (which I was), this hostel will serve your needs fine! But it is restrictive in how much you can move around/put your stuff in shared rooms so bear that in mind. Parking also interesting -- you can park along the south-west fences surrounding the place but when I came at 9p on a sat, there were no spots. I briefly parking across the street on Alder (to the west), but the folks who own the home came out and informed me i couldn't stay but COULD park by the stop sign across the street on 7th (to the south). The hostel said it was fine too, and I parked there overnight and nothing bad happened (ie towing). Overall: this place is fine for a short stay as far as I'm concerned! But you get what you pay for.
