Figuring literally anything would be better than the spaghetti (with no sauce- that key ingredient was left at home) that we packed "just in case it rains" we were blown away by this place. The food was delicious and our family of four all left happily stuffed- we had the salmon, Parmesan chicken, and the kids split a burger. The food alone was worth a five star review but there just is something special about this hidden gem of a mountain restaurant. While eating we enjoyed the mountain/lake views and were charmed by the hummingbirds that stopped by to eat along with us. If you are in need of gluten free options, this place has plenty! Well worth a stop. Highly recommend. Two thumbs up. We've never ditched camping for a restaurant before but glad we did tonight!

The self serve coffee had no place to put empty creamer containers. The potatoes were mediocre. The only staff we saw was at the front desk and could not have been less friendly. He never checked on us after bringing out our food. He was too busy looking at his phone to be bothered with patrons. We sat for 30 minutes after eating to visit (there was only a few others in the restaurant) and he walked right by our table and ignored us and our obviously finished plates. All this disappointment for $57.00. We will not be back and will be sure to tell all our friends between Leadville and Buena Vista. No wonder the place was empty on a Summer morning.

There is also a long counter area with a sink, microwave, and small refrigerator. The proprietors supplied the room with a portable burners, if you wish to cook. Since there weren't restaurants in the area, we stopped at Whole Foods in Denver and stocked up on food for the weekend. After a long day of hiking, this was a great place to relax and unwind. Oh yes, there was also wireless internet for those who must stay connected. Liz was a great host to us. She offered to loan us winter gear for our trek, and she had homemade peanut butter cookies waiting for us upon our return. We stayed two nights- early the morning of our attempt at Mt Elbert, she made a robust breakfast of eggs, bacon, and toast. The next morning was more relaxed, and she met us with pancakes and sausage. Delicious. The view was wonderful as well- on the patio, there are plenty of chairs to lounge around an outdoor fireplace, and there is a jacuzzi. All this overlooks Twin Lakes and the majestic mountains in the background. Next time, I hope to indulge in the outdoor amenities!

Liz has cooked great us many great breakfasts and we've shared awesome conversations about all things in life - kids, life, teaching and the Leadville 100 MTB race. Since they live along the Leadville MTB race route and usually have racers staying with them, for the race they go out to cheer on and support the racers. They have a beautiful home, which I wish I could actually buy since they're selling it to move on to their next chapter in life. However, until they sell it appears they will either rent the entire house or just the B&B portion. Don't hesitate to contact James or Liz to spend the night or even 10 days with them... You won't regret it! We really hope to can stay at A Wolf Den for the 2015 Leadville race. Not only have Liz & James been great inn keepers, they have become friends whom we'll keep in touch with for years to come.

I couldn't help myself. I was planning this trip to Leadville and was looking at bed and breakfasts…read morearound it. I fell in love with the pun, right off. I love anyone who's going to have enough of a sense of humor right there. The couple that runs the place instantly brings you in like you're family. I do not recommend this place for those who don't want a 'home' to stay in. You're going to be offered a hug, you're going to be asked questions, and expected to be somewhat integrated into the large breakfast in the morning. But, it goes easy. They're a second family, with just enough concern, advice, and stories to keep everyone entertained. During my stay here, we met quite a few interesting people (including a couple from Austin, strangely enough). And that's just the people. Across the small two lane road that is almost swallowed in the foreground by the gigantic scene of the twin lakes with what I believe to be Quail Mountain and Mount Hope providing the background to amazing sunsets. And the nearby scenic roads are immensely humbling and amazing. Driving through this valley between Mount Massive, Bald Eagle Mountain and Black Mountain, not to mention the countless other summits, you really get a feel for the mountains. And, at night, the place was so quiet you could hear the leaves knocking into each other in the breeze. And the chipmunks were .. plentiful. I have no hesitations about recommending this place to anyone. I mean, as long as you're looking for a great place to stay with a wonderful atmosphere, great food, and a warm welcome.

When we…read morearranged for the rental we told Paul B., the owner/manager, that we would be arriving very late, around midnight. We were sent directions and instructions for getting into the cabin. That all worked great. However, when we entered the cabin, it was VERY cold, about 42 degrees F. We spent almost an hour trying to get the heat on. The instruction book said to turn the dial on the individual electric heaters to the right, clockwise. They were already turned up and the heaters were barely warm to the touch. We tried turning the dial to the left and the heaters went cold. So, we turned the dials back to the right and tried to start a fire (at 1AM, after a long day of travel). The only way to get a fire to stay lit was to leave the door of the wood stove open, which is not safe to do. Every time we closed the door the fire went out, despite how open or closed the air vent was on the stove. We finally gave up and found extra blankets and put on long underwear and fleece and tried to sleep. After about 5 hours of shivering in bed, we got up (the temperature in the cabin was up to a balmy 52) and made arrangements to stay at the Delaware Hotel in Leadville for the next 2 nights. We called Paul and told him of the heat problem and that we were checking out that morning. We later received an email from Paul apologizing for the problem with the heat and that a full refund would be made. He asked that we provide our CC number so he could process the refund. I called Paul several days later (when we returned home from the trip) to give him our CC information. Paul was very agitated and said he did not have a paper and pen to write it down and that I would have to call him later. The next time I called Paul, he did not answer, so I left a voice mail with my number; Paul never returned my call. The next day, my wife called Paul and he told her that same thing he told me, that he did not have a paper and pen to write with and she would have to call back another time. Paul did call her back later that day and left a message to call with the CC information so he could process the refund. I returned Paul's call about a half hour later and this is where it got interesting. Paul started the conversation by telling me there was nothing wrong with the heat and he couldn't help it if we did not know how to turn on an electric heater. He then told me it was not the policy to issue refunds. (This is after several times offering to refund and about 2 weeks time). Paul became very agitated and argumentative, telling me I was a "d*ck" (slang word for part of the male anatomy) because I didn't know how to turn on the heater in the cabin. After that, every time I tried to say something, Paul would interrupt me and start rambling. After being interrupted 5-6 times, I asked Paul if he was going to allow me to finish a sentence, he responded by asking if I would let him finish a sentence. (I felt like I was arguing with a 10-year-old). He then called me a "d*ck" a second time. Eventually, Paul took our CC information and said he would process a refund. So far, the refund has not happened so we initiated a dispute with our CC company with the email and voice mail we have from Paul claiming he would give us a refund.
