Price is great, service is abysmal (poor communication, very rude, refused to install the product I wanted). Rodney is the only certified Velux installer in Austin, so if you want Velux skylights, he can get them at a much cheaper than a roofer, since they won't get the dealer discount. Two roofers quoted me $1200 each to install two 2x4 skylights, Rodney was just $600 each. He put them in and that was fine. Then later when I tried to get him to put in a tubular skylight, things went south quickly. I texted and asked if he could put in a tubular skylight for me which is level on top. (The level ones bring in light more consistently throughout the day, vs. the angled ones that follow the slope of the roof. My roof faces west, and I wanted the level version so I could catch more morning light.) So I texted and asked if he'd put in a level light, but he said the angled version would "work better for you". I asked why, but he sidestepped the question. I asked again, and he said, "There is a pitch adapter inside each unit that will allow us to keep the tube straight it will perform exactly the same." Since that still didn't answer my question and I could see we were getting nowhere by text, I asked him to call me on my landline, and gave him the number. Instead he called my cell. (ugh) Again I asked why he thought the angled version would be better, but he repeatedly sidestepped the question, instead telling me that they'd both produce the same amount of light (which isn't true, but even if it were, that doesn't tell me why the angled version would be BETTER). Finally he said that he's been doing this for years and I ought to just listen to him, and if I wouldn't then I should find another installer because it's a hassle to work with customers like me. THEN he said that the level version is harder to install and more prone to leaking. He might have just said that one of the first several times I asked him. But in any event, I was skeptical that what he said was true, so I said I'd check it out and call back. I called the manufacturer and they said that the level version is NOT harder to install or more prone to leaking (which makes perfect sense, since the only difference is the angle of the dome). About his claim that both level and pitched models deliver the same amount of light: First, the manufacturer says otherwise: their brochure says the level version "provides optimum angle for gathering light from all roof directions". Second, I called them, and they said the same thing. They also sent me a spreadsheet showing lumens at different angles. And finally, it makes sense that you'll get less light if the dome is pointing *away* from the sun for most of the day, as it does with the angled version on a west-facing roof. So I texted him back, told him I'd talked to Velux, and asked if he'd install the level version for me. He refused. I asked if he'd install the angled version for me. He never replied. By the way, before the 2x4 install, I asked about the U-factor of the product he was installing, and he said 0.27, which is great. After the install I looked it up and found that he actually gave me the SHGC; the real U-factor is much higher, 0.48. I texted him to let him know, in case any other customer asked, but he didn't reply, much less apologize for giving me the wrong information. The silver lining is that his refusal to work for me saved me some money. While looking for another installer, I realized that there's no real advantage to a tubular skylight over a simple LED light fixture. (The energy savings from free light will never pay for the cost of the install + the cost of extra heating/cooling with a hole in the ceiling.) read more

This was a bit of a splurge for me. I used SolarTex for a skylight and a solar attic fan. I wandered in there on a Saturday and the installer guy, Ron, happened to be working the showroom that day. He's a cool guy and a blues piano player. The solar tube is awesome and makes a huge difference. It's perfect. The attic fan is making a big difference, too. I am thrilled with the quality and appearance, but this stuff isn't exactly cheap. I would give them 6 stars on service, quality, professionalism and for making it easy, but I'm only giving 4 because it is a little pricey. I'm still glad I did it. read more

I have used Solartex twice this year with two pretty different experiences. The first skylight was PERFECT, the installer was really clean, fast, and offered helpful aesthetic input. The second tube went in just a few months later, but we had a different installer. I waited a couple months before I wrote this review because I wanted to make sure I was not being hot-headed in my review, but I'm still kinda pissed. I mean, it's not like they can come FIX the tube they put in the wrong place, right? The second installer was NICE, very, but the install went all kinds of wrong. It is not in line with the other one like we discussed, so the area I hoped to light is not benefiting from the tube at all. My husband came home and said, "I see no difference in light whatsoever, is it installed correctly?" It also just looks weird with two next to each other being a few inches "off" it almost makes the ceiling look crooked or something. Lastly, they left two greasy hand prints on my ceiling, which I cannot remove without a 12 foot ladder, which I do not own. Now my feelings are mixed. I really still want light in my dining room and if I could GUARANTEE the first installer, I might actually forget that I wasted $600+ dollars on the second light and re-hire them. Which SUCKS, but I really do need light where I wanted it to begin with. read more

He was professional, meticulous, and genuinely nice. He continually kept me updated about the progress of his work, and he even skipped lunch to finish the installation. Not the least expensive. However since I was traversing 17 vertical feet I wanted the product that lost the least amount of light in that distance, hence Solatube. Jake from Solartex did the install. He was on time, courteous, efficient, informative, thorough, neat, and meticulous. Haven't had the product in long enough to evaluate it in all lighting conditions, but thus far (cloudy days) am pleased. High marks to Solartex for a quick estimate over the phone. I just had 3 solatubes put in. One in each upstairs bathroom and one in my laundry room. I LOVE them! It makes an enormous difference! Each of the rooms are without a window so in the middle of the day they are still dark. Now, the tubes light up the room so I don't have to use the light switch at all during the day. They even add additional light into the connecting hallways. We went with the LED light kit in the laundry room so we have plenty of light at night as well (much more than the little light fixture that was there previously). The installer was on time, polite, efficient, and cleaned up any mess created by the installation. They followed up with a phone call to make sure I was completely satisfied with everything. I would definitely recommend this company! They are very professional and I couldn't be happier. read more

We live out of state and had to replace a couple of skylights in our house. Rodney was extremely responsive, both on the phone and over email, and guided us through the process. He recommended products that ended up helping us save money (the skylights we chose give you a tax rebate), installed them quickly and professionally, and was very patient dealing with us while we scheduled a time with our tenants. We found the Perfect Solution! for a dark home. We now have seven tubes in our house-- just recently had the last five placed. What a difference! Our plants are happier and lights don't go on now until nighttime! Our installers (Ron and Dustin) were courteous, professional and efficient. Ron had come to the house a few weeks earlier to help us determine the optimal places for more sunlight, and his help and suggestions were invaluable. I place the highest trust in him, and the company he represents. During installation of the two Solatubes in the office I had left that room for awhile. When I returned, the first thing I did was to turn off the two lamps on my desk -- I didn't need them any longer! They also installed an overhead lamp kit in the guest room, which you can't even see, as it's actually inside the Solatube itself. The light looks natural and soft in all the rooms. I think the kitchen benefits most of all- I never have to turn a light on in there now except after nightfall. Great company, terrific employees. I love my solar tubes so much! They were worth every penny. Our 80s house with low ceilings is much brighter and more cheerful with them (now I want one in every room). SolarTex has awesome service and their techs (especially Jake, who installed ours) really know their stuff and are willing to explain everything in detail. The free estimate was also very helpful in wrapping my mind around the cost as well as planning where the tubes would be most beneficial. I think it's worth the extra cost to have these guys do your install versus DIY or a contractor with less experience. Today Solartex Installation Consultant (Rory) came to my home to install two attic fans. First I would like to say that he was prompt, he said 9:00 am and he meant it. He introduced himself, evaluated what had to be done and did it. Once he completed installation of the fans he went over the product again, advised me on how they worked and reviewed the product and service warranty. The Customer Service with Solartex from the initial call, consultation (price quote) and installation has been nothing but exceptional. My neighbor recommended Solartex to me and I am pleased I took her advice and called. My attic is smoking hot and I am hoping that the fans will cut down on the accumulation of heat and save me a few dollars on the electricity bill (will let you know later). This is an exceptional company, with terrific customer service. They just replaced, under full 100% warranty, a failed solar attic fan that the previous owner of my home in Sun City Georgetown had installed by Solartex in early 2014. The previous owners left me no records of this installation, but Solartex looked up the "work order" from 2014 and told me they would replace it for free - - even though I wasn't the "original owner." They followed up twice on the scheduled replacement which took place this afternoon, and the technician they sent was extremely knowledgeable, pleasant, and professional. Encountered them at a Home Show. Scheduled for a solar tube--they were prompt, did the job. Had something odd about the installation, called them with the very slight concern, and they promptly scheduled appt. for f/u. It needed an additional screw; they put it in and were gone w/in one business day from the original call. Good service! Light looks great, tho a bit institutional for a living room. I'd do this again in a minute in a hall or kitchen, but a bit disappointed in the feel of the lighting where I put it in my living room--my responsibility, not theirs. We had two solar tubes installed about 15 years ago in our last home and they were great. The kitchen in our new home had no windows and was very dark even with fluorescent lights burning all day. All that changed when I asked for a quote from Ron and after Daniel installed the solar tube. What a difference, and an added bonus is that no lights are needed now, saving energy! Ron even gave me a repeat customer discount. Daniel is a true professional. He was very pleasant throughout the installation of the solar tube and two solar attic fans and the temperature was close to a hundred degrees or over in the attic that day. Don't know how he did it! Solartex brought my kitchen & bathroom from caves into bright sun-lit rooms. It's incredible how much it has changed the atmosphere.. I just had Rory come again on Monday to put in my third solar tube. The 2 in the kitchen are superb - they're 14" natural lenses.The other is above my shower with a 14" "Crystal/Prismatic" lens which is gorgeous!! Including the LED nightlights you get a tax rebate which sold me! I can't give enough compliments on the products as well as the service. Rory was a perfectionist, left my rooms without any debris. SolarTex installed four solar tubes for us in 2007. We've always loved the light they provide. We needed a new roof in Dec. 2015, and arranged for SolarTex to coordinate with the roofers to re-install flashing and generally check our solar tubes, to insure a good seal with the new roof. Jake did a great job. He cleaned and resealed three tubes, and replaced one that couldn't be salvaged. Jake was cheerful, professional, courteous and didn't leave until we were satisfied. My husband fell for a company marketing solar tubes at Lowe's and their quote was more than twice what SolarTex quoted! I had an estimate done to install two solar tubes. Dustin called to ask if he could arrive early to give me an estimate freeing up the rest of the day for me. He quickly looked around and gave me a reasonable estimate. He answered all of my questions so that I could make an informed decision. I decided to install both of the tubes. Dustin received a cancellation before my scheduled appointment, so he called to see if he could arrive before the scheduled time. He worked quickly and cleaned up all messes. Sadly, one of the tubes was not installed due to the off-center location. I greatly appreciated Dustin talking the matter over with me. I think the tube would have looked bad if it had been installed. I am thrilled with the tube that was installed and am trying to figure out a way to have the second tube installed so that it is aesthetically pleasing.
