Over the past few years, I have been looking for ways to make my home more efficient as well as more customized to my needs. Accordingly, in my mission to achieve both of these things, I thought an addition of a solar tube would not only brighten my home but save money. Initially when I asked for a quote for solar tubing, I was only seeking this upgrade for my secondary windowless bathroom. We live in Killeen and were looking for a Solatube installer; The Guild Collective is the only local authorized installer in our area. We had a consult June 17th with Rory to discuss Solatubes. It went well because we were already familiar with the product, having had them in our Colorado Springs house. For some of our questions, Rory directed us to his project manager, Ron. Ron was very responsive in the beginning; answered our questions, and provided proof of their insurance. The COK requires a contractor to be registered to do work in the city, plus a skylight/Solatube install requires a permit. I verified this myself with the permit office. I notified Ron of this info, because he wasn't aware of it, and wanted to verify it himself. At this point, we were told by Ron that he couldn't reach the person at the permit office to vetify with, several times. After that we didn't hear back from Ron and we became stuck in the "he said-she said" game between Ron and the COK. I was able to reach the COK chief building inspector, who verified he left a message for Ron but hadn't heard back. It is now July 23rd and still "crickets" from Ron. We've done a lot of calling back and forth, and feel like we've now been left in the dust. Since The Guild is the only authorized local installer, we have no one else to try. We are dissappointed. While contractors are responsible for obtaining proper permit(s)/city registration when applicable, it ultimately falls on the homeowner. We've done our due diligence. read more

Our newer home is long and narrow, and the homes on either side are fairly close so the builder didn't put windows where privacy might be compromised. So we have a windowless 2nd bathroom and several areas of the home that are dark regardless of time of day. My husband knew there was a good solution for this,found SolarTex and made an appointment. Rory from SolarTex visited with us to discuss where we might want to place the light tubes. Our open floor plan meant many possibilities for placement. We decided on a 14" tube in the dining/living area, which was perpetually dark, another 14" tube in the sunroom/kitchen area (which was dark in the morning), and a 10" tube in our 2nd bathroom. Installation took place about a month later. It was professionally done, with tarps laid before work was started, so there was no mess. What a difference these tubes make! On a sunny day, an area 15-20 ft in diameter is well lit around the 14" tubes. The 11' ceilings in our home mean the light is spread farther out. Our bathroom, with its 10" tube, looks like somebody keeps leaving the light on during the day. The area outside of the bathroom is also lit up now when the door is open. We opted for different diffusers (the visible plastic part in the ceiling) in the living areas vs. the bathroom. The prismatic ones make interesting patterns and have a more modern appearance than the plain diffuser we have in the bathroom. During the day, the diffusers look like a bright cool-toned LED ceiling light. The company also installs solar attic ventilation fans, so we had one of those installed at the same time to keep our attic cooler. There's a discount for multiple installations done the same day. Hardware and installation come with good warranties. We are very pleased with our choice, and highly recommend Rory and company. read more

We had 2 Solar Tubes and an attic fan installed a year ago and have been very happy with the entire process! This year we had roofing work done and the roofers caused some damage to one of the tube lights -we were able to request our original technician ( Jake ) to come take a look and he was fantastic at getting to the issue and repairing it. While installing a new roof on the house, the roofers knocked out the whole solatube. Called SolarTex just for advice about how the roofers should put it back, and SolarTex sent out someone to take care that it was done right -- no charge. Also will add that I had sprung for the optional solar-powered nightlight in this tube, so when the power was out for 2.5 days during the big freeze, my windowless kitchen supplied the best light in the house, day and night. Every morning when I get ready in my bathroom, I'm so happy I called SolarTex. It seems weird to be obsessed with a bathroom, but the natural light is so beautiful that I love showing it to everyone that visits. SolarTex was one of the first contractors I worked with after I purchased my house. I've been overjoyed with their customer service and work - I wish all contractors were this easy! The estimate was spot on. Daniel was such a friendly installer and it took exactly as long as he said it would. I had two 14" Solatubes put into both of my bathrooms. Neither had a window so they were depressingly dark. Now I am often transfixed from the beautiful, natural light coming from my ceiling. During thunderstorms the refraction makes cool flashes too! We were able to take out the old, noisy vent fans and replace it with the much quieter Solatube vent kits. If the old vent noise is a 7 out of 10 for loudness, the new vent kit is easily 3 or 4. Sometimes I can't even tell it's on. I'm trying to think of more places to install Solatubes. If/when I do, I will definitely be calling SolarTex again. Thanks for the great work! read more

My husband and I heard about SolarTex from a friend, who raved about his solar tube on Memorial Day. Two weeks later, we had installed our own solar tubes and are raving as well! We had a very dark living room with windows that didn't quite cut the gloom. We called SolarTex about a consultation and Ron came by that day to check it out. We chose the 14" diameter tubes that would spread light all along the floor and walls, and two of them to maximize the spread of light. Daniel did our installation the following week. Two hours later, we had two beautiful lenses in our ceiling, and light was everywhere! I can read in my living room without lamps during daylight hours. It's great! We had been considering a renovation project of removing our fireplace to install more windows, but that's expensive and we need to save up for it. This was a nice bridge project that was fast (2 hour installation) and not too expensive ($800 per tube, but with a federal rebate it will shake out to about $550/tube), and it has made such a huge difference! Ron and Daniel were so incredibly nice, friendly, helpful, and professional. I highly recommend this company and love our solar tubes!! read more

We've been waiting since last summer for our SolaTubes, and we got the first installed today, in my blacker-than-a-raven's-wing kitchen. All I can say is, why did I wait this long? It's amazing! It's not as bright as having the recessed lights on, but there's just this... visibility that we didn't have before. I was able to make lunch and do the dishes this afternoon without turning on the lights! I was worried it might be too bright, but it's perfect. I CAN SEE, FINALLY. It's like a whole new room. Like I said, we waited to install this after getting the estimate last summer. I called yesterday, scheduled it for next week, and a few hours later, they had a cancellation and were able to fit it in today! The tube was installed in just over an hour, with no mess. Jake was my installer and he did a better than super job! He was courteous, professional, and took care to be neat and tidy as well. I loved his attention to detail in the install. I'm writing this the same day as the install as I'm so thrilled with how well the extra light works in my vaulted ceiling living room. My neighbor down the street turned me on to this company and this concept of a "solar tube." He said he's had zero leaks in the years he's had one. I loved how it looked in his home, so I decided to install one. My entire house is like a cave. I'm waiting to see how well it holds up and behaves - as it has only been an hour since the install! - but if all goes well, I might consider installing another. I'm beside myself with how much of a positive change it is to the feel of my home! I love, love, LOVE it! What is interesting is that the salesman didn't go into my attic when I first requested an estimate. When Jake looked around with his camera (they make a small hole in the ceiling), he said there were too many wires and therefore was about to leave without installing anything as, credit to him, he didn't want to force the issue and have something happen during install. I implored him to look in the attic, and wha-la - he was able to make room through the wires by angling the tube (to my surprise the tubes don't have to go straight up but have a joint that can angle). It worked out perfectly and I'm so happy! But it was tense there for a while when he thought he wouldn't be able to install at all. I highly recommend, if you have an installer who uses a camera only to have them go into your attic to double check there's room. read more

SolarTex just installed our second tube of the year, and man is it exciting to see and experience the "after." Our formerly dark halls and guest bath are now flooded with natural light, which I love. I'm confident that if we ever sell our home, this will increase our resale appeal. Our installer, Rory, is super fast and does super clean work. Being able to trust him makes the whole process so much easier! He also gave me information on how to apply for a federal tax credit to help subsidize the cost, and advised me on placement. These guys gave me the best customer service I have had in my life. Long story short they came out and ended up fixing a problem which ANOTHER COMPANY CAUSED, and did not charge me for it. I said "But I at least owe you for the service call!" but the guy wouldn't charge me. I was quite surprised. They actually made very little noise and they cleaned up when they were through. It took about 5 1/2 hours to complete 5 solar light installations. The light in our house is amazing!! We lived in a cave like home and now we have bright, diffused, ultraviolet filtering light throughout the house and garage work area. Two of our lights provide lighting all night long. Solartex installed a solar tube light and vent in my upstairs bathroom. I absolutely love it!!! It completely changed the small dark bathroom for the better. Now with the natural sunlight flooding in I can see so well and feel good about using the space. At night the nightlight casts a very light glow similar to the moon, which is also kinda cool cause it feels so natural. It's also completely solar powered so I'm not wasting electricity. I opted for the "rainbow filter" (not sure of the real name) but it casts rainbows on my walls when there is direct sunlight which is SO COOL! Don't get me wrong, they're not crazy rainbows or anything, just a result of the fractals in solar light lens; very similar to what hanging crystals do in a doorway or car dashboard. The experience itself was very pleasant. The folks at Solartex were very good about scheduling and following up. They were on time, communicated well, and very polite. The price was decent and the service was reliable. I feel very good about my purchase. If I ever need another solar light I will use Solartex! :) read more

So here's the story: When I bought my house about 5 years ago, the previous owners had installed a solar tube in the master bath. Genius. It provides daylight in a room with no windows and requires that we only turn on the lights in there when it's night time or cloudy. For some time now, I've been wanting to install something similar in our laundry room, which is roughly half the size of the master bath. So, last Thursday, I called Solar Tex to see if I could get someone to come to our house and give us an estimate. But they did me one better: They a) gave me a quote over the phone and b) scheduled someone to come out and do the install THE NEXT DAY. Whoot! The Solar Tex dude arrived about 10 minutes early for his 1pm appointment (when was the last time a service person showed up early?!) and bada-boom, bada-bing, he was done in about two hours. And OH MY GOSH, it makes the BIGGEST difference in that little room. It is flooded with bright, natural light, and we had him install a light kit with the tube so that it doubles as a light fixture. That way, he was able to install the tube in the spot where the light fixture for that room had been and we were able to get rid of the ugly, builder-grade fixture that was in there. WIN! The tube is guaranteed for 10 yrs. and there is still a (small) tax incentive for the 2011 tax year. read more

The team here is outstanding. They did an incredible job of installing 4 solar tubes for me a few years ago. Recently we had some heavy rain and water was leaking inside the solar tube. Jacob came out with in a couple of hours of me calling it in. He showed my pictures of some lose flashing and a stray nail in a shingle on the roof. He had it fixed in no time. Long story short: An extra hole was cut into our roof unnecessarily and what was supposed to be a 1 day install turned into a problem that took much longer to fix. I am enjoying my solartubes, but the installers are not the sharpest tools in the shed. That, or they intentionally walked along the ridge of my roof causing quite a bit of damage by dislodging the decking underneath the shingles. I find it hard to believe that this company would employ someone so stupid, but I do believe they would hire a passive-aggressive loser that would pull this sort of shit. Good luck in dealing with these chumps. The holes left in ceilings, the damage left unrepaired, the rushed/botched jobs, and the intentional damage they cause are all a sign of the true nature of this business. Your best bet is to buy the tubes yourself and hire a contractor that's not an idiot to install them. You can even install them yourself. It doesn't require much skill as evidenced by the quality of installer this company employs. read more

Rory and team were great from the very start. They came out and helped us to identify the best locations for the Solatubes and gave us a quote right on the spot with no pressure at all. Once they came back to install, there were some unforeseen challenges with our roof but again Rory came to the rescue and helped us to identify the best alternative locations. The work was quick and he left the house cleaner than it was before. Even with one of our solar lights not not working after the first night, Rory was right back out the next day to replace it in about 5 minutes! If I could give more stars I would!
