I've lived down the street from this diner for 3 years and finally stopped in for breakfast--so glad I did! The food was great (eggs, bacon, toast, homefries--crispy and well-seasoned), and the blueberry waffles were super fluffy. I'm picky about homefries and hot sauce, and they nailed both--especially impressed they had Frank's. This place has been around for ages and you can most definitely tell why. Good old fashioned attentive service with classy music, cute decor, and good affordable food. Can't deny they they need some updates and upgrades, but overall it's a nice laid back diner that you and your families can come and enjoy. Whether you sit down with or without company it's enjoyable for everyone. There isn't many places I would feel comfortable sitting alone, but this isn't one of them. The service is a little laid back so if you like to be bothered or constantly checked on maybe this is not the place for you unless you don't mind giving a wave to your server who by the way is always visible. The grill was great! , unfortunately Johnnys Diner is not , we ordered the Cajun Pasta and the alleged Home made meatloaf , order came with soup , the soup had no broth it was literally noodles dried chicken and water , the cajun pasta with chicken and shrimp, the shrimp was hard as hell as if it was microwaves also absolutely had no flavor , the meatloaf was not meat loaf it was best described as school lunch Salisbury steak patties,, we didn't even finish our food , we paid the bill and left it on the table, we let the owner know when he came to the table he took the added shrimp off the bill, but when i respectfully and politely let him know how all out food came out he seemed very bothered and uninterested in keeping is as customers,, also the prices has sky rocketed, I used to love the Grill and living close by i would frequent eat there, But I would never eat here again and do not recommend you waste your money , RIP THE GRILL read more

I have been here on 3 separate occasions, the first time I ordered a western omelet, the second was a philly cheesesteak and the third Texas burger. The pros are that everyday you have a new list of specials for the day, that is why my meals were so varied. The western was good and they did a great job with it, great flavor and was ready quick. The staff is nice as well. The cons, the cheesesteak was made weird, all the cheese was on one side and the meat on another it was almost two different sandwiches and there was too much oil or grease on the bottom of the plate from sandwich. I just finished eating at this place and the customer service was so bad. I get it when you have a short staff but to treat your customers with no hello or good morning or a name in case we need you is just bad. The lady had glasses short a bit big, she never even asked if we were doing okay during our meal or offered a desert afterwards. Soooo disappointed. I've come in the past. Good food and service from the young waitress. Excited to bring my family and we're seated. The older waitress was not so kind. Then a large group of African Americans came in (seemed like from a group or funeral or something.) and that same waitress was SO NASTY TO THEM. I couldn't believe it. She just kept snapping at them, while the other young lady stayed so polite. Then after what seemed like 10 EXCRUCIATING MINUTES of her complaining OUT LOUD about them, they had enough and left. One of the worst diner experiences I have ever had. Waitress was friendly when taking our order but her tone changed when food was finally brought to our table. She had a nasty attitude when we asked for water and didn't even stop to offer coffee refills, even though she offered at all other tables around us. We had to signal another server to finally get our check after waiting 15+ minutes. When our waitress finally brought the check over, she slammed it on the table without a word and walked away. I believe the Florentine omelet was supposed to come with bread, as all omelets do, however the waiter didn't even ask me what type of bread I wanted. The omelet itself and the accompanying home fries were decent, nothing special. I wish the feta cheese in the omelet was cooked into it instead of sandwiched in between the folded omelet.The French toast didn't even come with powdered sugar .. the waiter had asked if I wanted powdered sugar and butter/syrup about 10 minutes after delivering the French toast to the table. Lastly, there was butter and a dirty napkin under the table, so when I stood up to pay the bill my foot slid on the butter and the butter got all over the bottom of my shoe! I went here to pickup breakfast food. I ordered a pork roll egg and cheese on a roll along with sausage egg and cheese on a bagel (which they ended up putting on a roll which isn't a big deal but that's why I didn't give it 5 stars) and also ordered a side of bacon which they gave a heaping amount of (in a good way) and a side of home style fries which were okay. I use to love this place as a kid but overtime i'm not sure what happened... I got a chicken noodle soup and they used mac and cheese noodles which was weird. That wasn't the horrible part though, the horrible part is that the "chicken" in my soup was so chewy i couldn't even break it down with my teeth like it's not real chicken. However my "large soup" to go order was a small container. I also got mozzarella sticks and it tasted like they deep fried shoprite processed cheese sticks... very expensive for such a bad meal. This place is terrible. Not only is the food subpar, the service is even worse. The waitress took our menus in a rather curt fashion. Then the waitress took our order without repeating it back to make sure that she got the order correct. She brings me out a plate with what looked like ham, eggs and grits. The ham was interesting looking especially because I did not order it. I ordered pancakes but she "heard" ham-steak. I have never heard of ham-steak and don't know why anyone would order it. Smh. Ok I have been going to this diner for years and the decline is showing more and more. I was hungry so I decided, against my better judgement. well I decided to order the pork chops. ( we were out of ) then I decided to order the chicken scampi. when I came in looked okay but, it was bland. the waiter came to ask me how my food was and I told in bland and it needed more garlic. he explained they ran out of garlic. I've always noticed this place while passing by on the train, so when I found myself in the neighborhood, I thought I'd give it a shot. Not bad, pretty much your typical NJ diner with the kind of food you'd expect. They apparently have a charcoal grill, hence the name. It's a little small compared to other diners (wait staff of three) and the interior is unusual. Lots of wood. I liked seeing the clientele of the place though. It's a working-class neighborhood, yet a very diverse mix of people. Can't say I'd go out of my way to visit again, though. If I'm in the area, it's a decent option. read more

I drive by this place everyday on my way home and the parking lot is always empty which probably should have been an indicator to keep going. Today I wanted breakfast and decided I would pick up an order for the family. Walking in a young lady probably late twenties greeted me with for here or to go. I said to go and asked for a menu she pushed one over and walked off. She took my order wrote nothing down which concerned but she walked a few feet down and with her back to me shouted only half the order to me. I ordered home fries a sausage omelet pancakes with chocolate syrup on the pancakes French toast eggs scrambled hard with cheese home fries and beef sausage grits with cheese The order didn't take long at all but while I waited her and another waitress talked about a customer who wanted a cup of warm water and somebody's relationship issues (I guess they broke up for five mins) is what I heard I opened each box before I left and no chocolate on the pancakes so I asked and before I could say a word she said it's in the bag which wasn't what I asked for but I didn't argue I left.. The food don't waste your time or money on the home fries extremely dry, the grits were gloopy and cold the cheese didn't melt but you could tell the cup was microwaved as it was stuck to the side of the cup how cheap microwaved cheese does and whatever was stamped on the cheese was still legible, I'm pretty sure my sausage was pork, French toast wasn't bad, pancakes weren't what I wanted Overall less than mediocre food and even worse customer service. Stopped in for breakfast with a co-worker on a Friday morning at 9:00 am and it was quiet. I ordered the banana pancakes with sausage and my co-worker ordered 2 eggs over easy with bacon and rye toast. None of my 3 pancakes had bananas in them. I wasn't going to send them back. It's pancakes! They were hot and tasty regardless. My 2 fat sausage links were tasty and cooked fresh. My co-worker was pleased with his meal. The coffee was good.
