We found the Green Dragon earlier this year. It is OK and has great potential to be a very good place to eat, however, there are many mistakes and niggles that prevent it from being good.
In January the wine list was good. It has slowly deteriorated and it is difficult to find a good wine, there were some good reds and a pretty decent rose, but they have gone now and not been replaced with anything comparable.
As for the food, it is very hit and miss. Spinach with sand in, pesto on everything whether it works or not, cinnamon in most of the deserts, chef has been watching too many bad cookery programmes on TV, or too much Jamie Oliver.
Home cooked chips are actually partly peeled potatoes cut into chips, so if you don't like tough skins on your chips don't order them. If you order a steak, cooked medium, you will most likely get it well done. Salad comes already dressed. Tomato and olive salsa is in fact a pile of raw chopped onions with a squashed black olive in it, and the cod is not cooked right through.
It is not bad enough to avoid going back but we are looking for somewhere else we can visit regularly, and not knowing the area we keep ending up back at the Green Dragon.
We finally managed to get there for the steak night, a lovely sunny evening, and got a table outside, overlooking the countryside. After a few minutes of waiting to find out about how the steak night worked, whether there was a special menu or not, and no service we were being deafened by the music blasting out much too loud for a nice country setting. Have no idea if the steak night was good or not, as we couldn't stand the noise and left. It could have been a lovely evening in a peaceful garden with a pretty view but it was more like an outdoor TGI Fridays, a great shame.
It seems to have the feel of a place that is not quite ready to open for service, not quite organised, and in need of finishing touches and perhaps a cookery course for the chef. There is potential and I hope it improves before the place has to close down. read more
