This is a great looking pub, a real proper pub with decent beer. Lots of dark wood, busy wallpaper, nick nacks everywhere you look and a cosy local feel. It makes a refreshing change from the souless carbon copy pubs found everywhere these days. So far so good so why only 3 stars I hear you cry? Well the problem for me came in the form of the terrible attitude and customer service from the landlady. The Lord Nelson partakes in the Tastecard offer, this particular one being 2 for 1 meals. However when I produced my card I was faced with eyeball rolling, snorts of derision and a grumbled well I suppose thats just £7.50 then. The way she treated us made us feel belittled for daring to take her up on the scheme she had freely joined. The plates of food that then arrived had clearly been adjusted to compensate for us daring to use a Tastecard. The portion sizes were a joke, 1 tiny cabbage leaf, 2 tiny carrots, 6 beans and 3 potatoes. Compared to the tables around us this was a clearly a drastic reduction of the norm and a cynical and unpleasant thing to do. The idea of the tastecard is great but if you dont want to take part then dont, this behaviour is unnecessary and wholly unpleasant. This is a local pub for local people and sadly they can keep it, I wont be going back. read more
