Tried this place after a 5 year hiatus. Nothing seems to have changed. Service was Terrible (not really the waiter's fault. He was alone on a Friday night waiting tables And running out the carry-out orders). Waited 15 minutes for a Luke warm bowl of soup And another 15 minutes for the egg rolls. They weren't hot either.they were supposed to To have shrimp and pork but seemed to be just cabbage. My cashew chicken was not good. The chicken was cut up as small as some mystery vegetable and I only had 3 pea pods. My husband's Kung pao beef was okay, but not very hot(spicy or temperature). Never again read more

My favorite Chinese in town. They have a huge menu, so whatever palate you have, you can find something here. The inside is rustic and the ambience transports you away from Rockford and into a little slice of Asia. The owner is friendly and so is the staff, and there are also video slots available if that's your thing. We love coming here to dine in and carry out! read more

I'm pretty sure this business has been there 50 years. One of the waitresses has been there 30 years!! My wife and I go there for date night. The food came quickly and was hot. Well seasoned and the portion size was appropriate. The staff is friendly, as always. The only thing I can say to the negative would be that the interior needs paint and the brass work needs polishing. That won't keep us away though. We'll be back. read more

My wife had a taste for Chinese food, and found this place in Rockford that we wanted to try. It's on State Street, and is on the north site, with parking in front. We dropped in after church, and the place was COVID quiet. There were several tables occupied, and it was easy to maintain social distancing. My wife ordered the Rainbow Peking Noodle dish, and I went with the General Gan Pong Chicken. Both came with large portions, and tasted just fine. The tables were large and comfortable. The service was good. The price was good. No complaints. read more

I wish I could give 0 stars! We came for the Sunday brunch, as my husband remembers it to be great. Boy was he wrong! Or maybe it has changed that much in the time he has been away? When you first walk in, you can't help to notice how dark the place is (a little like a dungeon as someone else commented). Even my 5 year old asked why they turned off all the lights. With only 5 tables seated, it took 15 min to get drinks and never saw the waiter again. When we would ask other employees for things like ketchup or napkins, they would literally roll their eyes and run off like they were soo busy doing nothing! The buffet was small but had a bunch of options. I was disappointed the egg rolls all had shrimp, as a family with fish allergies that doesn't work for us. Most of the other food was cold or extremely hard from sitting out. I believe the buffet was only going on for an hour and a half by the time we got there. Overall, we will not be coming back even though I usually give places second chances..... It would need a remodel and maybe some new management for me to come back. read more

I hadn't been here in a long time, and I knew that the owners were different, but I wanted to try it again. We were seated and had water, drinks and orders taken right away, early Friday evening. We had twice cooked pork, which had always been a favorite in the past, and hunan beef. The pork wasn't as good as I remembered it. It had some heat, but mainly from the peppers, not the sauce. The beef was large chunks of grilled beef rather than sliced beef, but I liked it, and they brought steak knives out when serving it. My only objection there was that it had more sweetness than heat. Over all, I enjoyed the meal. It was good, not great. read more

I had seen some good reviews for this place so we decided to check it out for takeout. Worst decision we could have made. Portions are very small. The meat all tastes old. The teriyaki chicken just tasted like they soaked it in Soy sauce before cooking. The pan fried lo mien noodles were soggy and looked and tasted like overcooked fettuccine noodles. The rice was dry. And I could name even more. For spending $90 to feed my family takeout, I was very disappointed. We will not be trying them again ever. read more

Rockford doesn't have a whole lot of variety and quality when it comes to ethnic food, and as I've lived here my whole life... my own experience is limited as well. But given that, I would have to say that this is the best place in Rockford to get chinese food. The restaurant is under new ownership, by the people who used to run Yen Ching, but they still have the same great food that was served at both restaurants. Their food is delicious, and the prices are very reasonable as well. I hadn't been there in a long time, till I just went for my birthday in March 2010. They have many different types of stir fry mostly, and dinner packages for two or more that give you a great deal. My dad and I got one of the dinners for two, which came with soup, an appetizer platter with about 6 different items for each person, plus our entrees. The entrees themselves are large enough for 2 good meals, with a large plate of stir fry and a bowl of rice on the side. All that, plus our drinks, a big bowl of their amazing hot and sour soup to take home to my dad's gf, plus tip... came to about $40. And on a final note, their oolong tea is also yummy. ^_^ read more

A bright spot to the start of my year! I have recently started going to The Great wall and have been very pleasantly Surprised. I can honestly say, I have never felt more welcome at a Chinese restaurant. I have only ever visited during lunch hours, they have 1 hostess and 1 server and it functions perfectly. Regardless of how busy they are. They have a decent Vegetarian selection which is greatly appreciated. The food is always very fast, customizable, and delicious! I did not give them a 5 star as I think they could certainly have more vegetarian options and they also do not offer a vegetarian soup. I am always so pleased with my visits. I want to thank their staff for always making me feel so welcomed. I will happily frequent this place and recommend you try it as well. read more

After several years we decided to give this place another try. BIG mistake! The General Tso chicken tasted so bad that we couldn't eat it. IT tasted old and funky and the outer crust was soggy and basically fell off the chicken. I was honestly afraid to even give it to my dog. I've been eating here for a while and this place is THE BEST Chinese restaurant in Rockford. The establishment has been around for long time, I knew the owners before and they've sold it to another family who used to own Yen Chen restaurant. I'm glad they still kept the menu the same and the food still taste as it used to be. If you want to try this place out I suggest you ordering the mongolian beef or chicken... if you want something mild/Spicy go with the black bean chicken. It is delicious. read more

We took my mother here for Mother's Day, this is one of her favorite restaurants. It's been around for a long time, but I never remember it when we talk about going out. That will change now. When we were there the service was fantastic. The waiter was very friendly and helpful. We never waited long for anything and he checked on us a reasonable amount of times. We couldn't have been happier with the service. The food was pretty good too, depending on what you ordered. We all had the egg drop soup and we thought it was okay. We were also given complimentary crab ragoons for the table. They were pretty good. My Father had the Sweet and Sour pork that he loved. My mother had the Sweet and Sour Shrimp, which she loved, it's her favorite. My son had the chicken fried rice which was okay, nothing great, not bad. Just your standard fried rice. I had the Princess Chicken (Kung Pao Chicken) and I thought it was bland. I've had much better at other restaurants. This is not a slam on The Great Wall, not all places make all of their dishes the same and I prefer it elsewhere. It didn't taste bad, but wasn't what I was expecting. My wife ordered the Mongolian Beef and she had a mouth-gasm. Many years ago I introduced her to Mongolian Beef at Yen Cheng's. She loved it and we would order it for take-out monthly. They went out of business and she never found another place that made it like they did. After years of lamenting the loss of her favorite dish, she found one that was almost exactly the same here. It was the best unintentional mother's day gift ever! The restaurant itself was clean. It had that cheesy Americanized Chinese atmosphere with the cliché decorations and drinks. If you've been into one Chinese restaurant, you've been in this one. I will say that it seemed larger on the inside that what it appeared. They are located right on State Street. This can make getting in and out difficult if the traffic is heavy. If you've ever driven on State Street most evenings and weekends, you know what I mean. Trying to take a left out of the parking lot can be just about impossible. We went back just last weekend and again everything was fantastic. My wife is very happy that she can get her Mongolian Beef again. read more

Lighting inside was very dingy and dark. Had a hard time seeing. Food came out cold. It was not a good experience for me.

STRONGLY AVOID. First, after my husband and I ate the appetizer we ordered we were stuffed so we only had a couple of bites of the 2 entrees that were heaping full on the plates. We politely asked the server for to-go boxes and he took our plates into the kitchen to box them up. The next day when we opened up our boxes to re-heat the food we found that the small Chinese boxes were HALF FULL OR LESS. The plates no kidding were HEAPING full when they went back into the kitchen. That only leaves two alternatives for what happened to our food once they went into the kitchen, each of which are equally disturbing: 1. Half of our entrees were served to the kitchen staff for dinner or 2. The restaurant is reusing the food by only boxing up half of the customers entree and reusing the other half for the next person that orders that entree. Second, my husband and I ordered the dinner for 2. We saw on the bill that they charged us $24. We both were convinced that the dinner for 2 was less than that on the menu but we didn't want to be confrontational so we didn't say anything. I picked up a to-go menu on the way out the door and read it on the way home and sure enough the dinner for 2 is $22 so they overcharged us and do not charge the prices that are listed on the menu. This is my husband's favorite Chinese restaurant. He loves the orange chicken (spicy) and crab ragoons. I absolutely love the egg rolls! They are my favorite and the best I have had. The egg rolls have multiple meats in them and a great balance of all ingredients with no one over powering the other. I can (and usually do) make a meal out of the egg rolls. But when I do order a meal I lean to Hunan chicken (no mushrooms) or Mongolian beef. The meals are pretty standard and not too different than other places but good. The staff is really friendly and it is clear they have a strong following of regulars. We have called in advanced and taken out which also works well. They give large portions so plenty of food and great leftovers. If I rated on the egg rolls alone I would give five stars! read more

My wife and I went there for the first time on a Saturday night at 5:30. The interior was one big room with Chinese decorations on the walls. No reservations were needed as there were only about 8 other people seated with a couple more seated in the bar area. The menu is pretty extensive and we found a few things we wanted to try. We started with eggs rolls which were good sized and packed with vegetables which comes with 3 sauces. The spicy mustard was really hot and a little went a long way. The sweet and sour was ok as was the soy sauce. My wife ordered a shrimp dish and I ordered a chicken dish. The portions were good sized and we brought some home. We also ordered some fried rice which was good sized but a little disappointing in flavor compared to our other dishes. My wife really enjoyed having a pot of green tea brought out to the table with our appetizers. The waitress was friendly and our food was brought out at an nice relaxed pace. All in all an enjoyable experience and we will be back to sample other dishes. read more

The man that I talked with was nice and apologetic. We came in for Christmas Eve as a party of 8. Made a reservation, all was well. As we were waiting for our table (we arrived a bit early) the lady in the front mentioned how the wait time for carry out orders was about an hour. We were seated, the waiter took appetizer and entree orders. We ordered two orders of Crab Rangoon and potstickers. Appetizers took about 20 minutes to arrive and were lukewarm. Tasted okay but nothing special. After 45 minutes and asking a staff member where our food was we finally ate our main dish. They came out very very staggered, about a 10 minute gap before everyone was finally served. We had people who were finished eating at the same time others had just been served. Some food was borderline cold while other dishes were steaming. The explanation for the delay in food was that the kitchen was overwhelmed with carry out orders. We have normally had good food when we order, however the last 2 times have been disappointing. Tonight our food tasted like they packaged up the buffet that was served at lunch time. The crab rangoon tasted like it was heated up in a microwave (was dark brown like it at been sitting under heat lamps during their buffet) and the chicken in my fried rice and my husbands general tso tasted super dry. So completely annoyed about my entire experience with this place. After they delivered our food, we soon realized there was a bug in our food.
