I've been here twice and it's pretty good. The restaurant is super cute and spacious. Lots of sunlight beaming in. First time I visited The great commoner it was for lunch and I wasn't too impressed. I had the uncommon BLT and the Asian slaw salad. Loved the salad, didn't really care for the BLT. Second visit we came in for breakfast! Been dying to try that Labne platter and it did not disappoint! The CHOCOLATE PRALINE FRENCH TOAST was also AHHHMAZING! Unfortunately, the SHAKSHUKA was disappointing. SHAKSHUKA is all about the sauce base, that's what usually steals the show and sadly this tomato sauce lacked flavor. All and all, I think I'd go again! This place is great. I'm not sure why the ratings are so low, but don't believe them lol. I don't think this place is meant to be a lunch spot. If you want a lunch spot then go to a restaurant across the street. This is a solid cafe with great coffee, tea, and pastries. If you've ever been to Canelle, this is like a baby Canelle. I believe they're partners or maybe the owner of Canelle owns this too because they have Canelle's pastries. Both times that I've been here I've had a wonderful experience. It's extremely clean, the drinks are great, pastries are pretty good. I really like how quiet it is, I'm actually able to study here. The workers are all super friendly and helpful. I also heard management interacting with a new worker and they were extremely nice and understanding. If I lived closer, I'd come here everyday to study. Definitely recommend. read more

FINALLLLLY! A brunch spot in Dearborn that lives up to my standards. This place is incredible. Open seating and with incredible decor that makes you feel like you aren't in a cafeteria or a diner. Each seating is different where you can hold a conversation with your company. I had the steak & eggs and it really was on point. The steak was cooked and seasoned to perfection. I ordered my eggs over easy. I prefer it to be a tad more runnier but it was still delicious. Oh! The chimichurri spread on the side was incredible. Absolutely loved dipping everything into it. I had the Sesame Crusted Salmon with Black Lentil & Snap Pea Salad, Aleppo Vinaigrette, Tahini. The combined flavors in this dish were delicious. The salmon was cooked perfectly; crispy on the edges and tender inside. The lentils were slightly chewy; perfectly done with small roasted onions. The tahini complemented the salmon and lentils. The hostess and server were attentive and pleasant. I had expressed interest in several dishes, and after consulting with the chef, the server explained to me how each dish could be made gluten free for me. (The salmon was GF without changes.) I love this spot! The food and coffee is on pointe! The decor is both old and new, which creates a charm not frequently seen in older buildings these days. The service was average, but warm. Prices are reasonable. I had the pistachio crusted french toast. My tastebuds were sent straight to heaven while enjoying a fresh cappuccino during the meal. I couldn't have asked for better. The Great Commoner is one of my new favorite brunch spots in the Detroit area! They offer a halal menu with many vegetarian options. There is also a very large selection of delicious coffee, tea, and mocktails! I decided to go with the B.B. Egg Croissant Sandwich and enjoyed this very much! There were really great toppings and the "fancy sauce" they used was really delicious and not overpowering. My only complaint was that the croissant got a little greasy but still very yummy! I also got a side of the common potatoes, and thought these were cooked great! They were slightly crunchy, perfectly spiced, and served with sauteed peppers. I also got the Brown Butter Pancakes and thought these were delicious! They were served with a topping of blueberry compote which really balanced the sweetness of the pancakes and butter. I wish they were able to give a little more of the compote topping though! The ambiance and decor of the restaurant is one of my favorites! So many interesting light fixtures, wallpaper, and artwork throughout! I also love that they have a separate coffee and pastry bar that you can visit if you're not interested in sitting down for a full meal! Service is also very friendly! This caught me by surprise. My wife turned me towards this place across from Mint 29 which appears to be a new patisserie/cafe in downtown West Dearborn. Beautiful and spacious inside I must say. It's divided into different sections, some more private or casual than others. As far as variety is concerned they didn't have a lot of desserts, but I think that had to do with the fact they sold out of a few things by the end of day. We were greeted by smiling and friendly staff all around. Across from the bakery there is an aisle for prepackaged food and then next to that a barista. They seem to have all their bases covered here. I won't lie though $14 for a raspberry tart and an eclair is kinda hard to justify for me, but you pay for the quality of the ingredients and the work they put into it I suppose. The former was outstanding, but the latter was not very unique nor did it taste like it was worth the expense. Regardless I do look forward to coming back and trying other items. read more

My coworkers and I stumbled upon The Great Commoner for breakfast and loved the vibe and food. We were pleasantly surprised at the giant pastry case featuring Matt Knio/Canelle desserts. We enjoyed it so much that we ended up planning a little baby-sprinkle lunch for our team at work, and they handled our large group SO smoothly as we called ahead and reserved a private room. I ordered steak and eggs and my order was over cooked and extremely heavy on spice, to the point it was inedible. My date had the same problem with her food. The beef bacon was gross, like eating a slim Jim for breakfast. This place could be amazing if they had the right chef and a diverse menu. Finally got to give this place a try after months of waiting a new brunch spot in West Dearborn. I stopped in one evening for pastries and coffee and did not leave disappointed, so came back from brunch the following weekend. I was mostly satisfied but there were a few things that stopped me from truly loving the place. First was the side potatoes: they were definitely old and reheated. Did not taste fresh at all and were really disappointing. My husband ordered the Turkey bacon and it was slightly undercooked. However, the avocado toast was excellent (they flavor it really well that makes it a nice change for a pretty basic/standard dish) and once again their coffee was top notch. I ordered the pistachio latte which was delicious and not overly sweet. You won't be disappointed with their coffee at all, it's just that their food could use some tweaks. read more

Was excited to try a halal brunch spot in Dearborn. As we walked in the ambiance was impressive. A super clean place with a boutique feel to it. As soon as the waitress came, the whole experience was kinda ruined. I asked about the coffee menu and she said I can go up to coffee bar and see the menu there. I was able to find the menu online at my table. I ordered the three egg scramble and asked for goat cheese which she said they cannot do. Never heard of not being able to add goat cheese to eggs!!! Then it took half an hour for coffee to come that even the manager had to apologize saying he doesn't have enough staff. The iced latte finally came and it was super bitter! I had to add some stevia and half/half to give it some flavor. After about an hour our food came. Hubby ordered the steak and eggs which was super tasty! It comes with chimichurri sauce and an excellent addition to the meal! I ordered the three egg scramble with turkey bacon, which was good. Love the place, service was good, I went during a weekday and and place was full, but without a reservation I waited like 5-10 mins. Was seated in a nice corner, food and tea was brought in on time, I asked for a well done steak but got a medium well. The flavor is there for the steak and eggs, wish it was served with some sort of bread or fruits, which it didn't. I didn't like the coffee, it was cold and tasted bitter old. The ambiance is there for a downtown vibe, but floors were dirty, and for a place that's like a little over a month old, I don't like the fact place is already looking like its been open for few years. I've been here twice now- throughly enjoy the steak and eggs flavor wise. The presentation wasn't consistent between the first and second time though- The first time around my steak was cut nicely and placed on my plate, the second time, it look like they just slapped a piece of steak on my plate which was difficult to cut while eating. The iced coffee's are kind of bitter so recommend getting extra syrup if you want a bit of a sweeter taste. So far I've only had the mille-feuille from the pastry section, which was delicious but when I went on Monday they seem like they were low on stock. Definitely recommend making a reservation because this place is very busy! Love the food though and people seem to be really nice so far! I also love that I can scan the check right from my phone and don't have to get up or wait for someone to bring me my card back after paying the bill. read more

I've been wanting to try this spot for a few weeks now so I was excited to finally get in with a reservation. The decor was well done. Beautiful lighting fixture above the bar makes it the focal point of the restaurant. The food was pretty good. As with any new restaurant there will be hiccups that come with it. Our food took a little while to come out and they also forgot something's but it wasn't a big deal, I'm sure everyone is just getting used to working together. Me and a few friends stopped by this place which looked really nice from the Inside and had a pretty average menu. The waitress staff were so sweet and did inform us that it was halal which made us really happy. I got the scrambled eggs with turkey bacon and potatoes and my friend opted for a chicken sandwich. I have actually tried to stop in twice but did not have a reservation and this is definitely a hot spot for breakfast and lunch. Our food was delicious, but the service is what made our visit outstanding. The partners in this business obviously have a heart for hospitality and walk the talk with the training of their staff.
