I am very glad I followed the review that suggested older reviews were based on older experiences and the place has improved. The restaurant is hidden in plain sight in an older house on the corner of St Stephen's Green. The indoor area is decorated in an elegant, Victorian-inspired theme, while the outdoor area features trendy contemporary restaurant décor and plenty of sunlight during a dry day. Both areas have their respective bars, and they have a good selection of Irish whiskies. Booked in advance for a table at 11am on a Sunday morning.
For main course, I had the egg benedict Royale with hollandaise sauce, smoked salmon, and avocado, and side of baked cut potatoes. The dish was solid. Eggs were boiled to such perfection that once cut the egg yolk just flowed out and melted seamlessly with the hollandaise sauce to form a thick and sweet-sour mixture, and the egg white tasted like buttery milk. Call me unorthodox maybe, I usually loved a a bit less of those hollandaise sauce, which was more on the citrusy side, but in this dish, the egg-sauce mixture was a wonderful companion for those nicely baked potato chunks with crispy skin and warm melting texture. Smoked salmon tasted savory, packed with smokiness and the fattiness of the salmon, but not overly spicy and salty. Muffin was slightly on the crispier side, but it worked well with the smoked salmon and the egg-sauce mixture. I have disliked avocado a bit, but it worked in this dish overall, though I still would wish they would have substituted it with something else.
An issue is the speed of service. Waitresses were quick to bring my drinks and my entrée, but the fruit plate took about 10-15 minutes after the entrée, and the attention to my bill took another 10 minutes or so. Probably it was because there was a large group of 20 today occupying the main outdoor dining table and the waitresses had to prioritize them.
Overall: for food alone, I would rate 4-4.5 stars. Service was on the slower side so 4 star total. read more
