I started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with the head instructor, Alex, three years ago. I've been training at The Grappling Club for a little over one year. I've never before trained in any similar art. As one might imagine, I started with some trepidation. Alex, the owner and head instructor, made that fear go away fast. The atmosphere here is open. I drill with higher belts. I roll with higher belts. I am encouraged by my training partners and the trainers in both scenarios. I'm encouraged to ask questions and I receive answers that make sense. I train in the mornings, which tend to be a more relaxed atmosphere. We work hard, but there are fewer who tend to train at 7am, so we ask more questions. I've had the opportunity to have a handful of private training sessions with Alex. He has tailored each session to my particular needs. I've noticed that Alex has shown me techniques that cater to not just my skill, but my physical stature and addresses various questions I've asked during regular classes. The first class is free. I love this place! I first dropped in on a class back in December of 2016 and after that initial meeting with Alex and class I knew this was going to be my school. Fast forward to 2017, I've been training at the Grappling Club and I've learn so much under Alex's high level of instruction. The Club is so welcoming to everyone and there is a diverse schedule of classes (Sambo, wrestling, Jiu Jitsu, and submission grappling) that many academies do not offer. The schedule is flexible enough that you can train every day (morning, midday and evening). Not only does the Grappling Club offer high level of instruction but the facility is amazing, definitely the cleanest facility I have ever trained in. There are both male and female changing rooms and showers. I recommend anyone to come in for a class or if visiting New York and looking to train drop in. Been training here for a few months now , starting with no experience at 30 , the school is a good place for new or experienced grapplers . Alex ( head coach ) is very personable and laid back but serious about his jiu jitsu . They also have Greg , Kevin , and Kyril ( sambo) teaching and they're all talented passionate coaches . The gym doesn't look/feel like the typical martial arts gym , it's all very clean and modern looking, and actually aesthetically a good looking / well designed space . I've been training at The Grappling Club since March of 2016. It's an absolutely amazing place to learn jiu-jitsu without having to deal with the egos and paternalism that come along with some other BJJ gyms. The Grappling Club is laid back and Alex Bednenko, the head instructor, is knowledgeable beyond his years. Training is individualized and focuses on technique versus brute force. Best jiu-jitsu school in Brooklyn - hands down! What makes Grappling Club so special is the awesome instruction and just how different it is from other jiu jitsu schools.
