There's generally 2 reasons I go into thrift stores - men's clothing and records. This store has a lot of clothing over two floors, but most of it is poor quality. I know that in a pinch I can get a pair of slacks or a dress shirt here for a job interview, but it's very unlikely you'll find vintage clothing of any quality. Two stars for clothing. The vinyl selection can be hit or miss, but once in awhile it's a goldmine. Sure, there's tons of Johnny Mathis, Anne Murray and whatever else the elderly bought en masse back in the 70's, and more Christmas albums and children's albums than you'll ever need, but amongst all the yard sale castoffs are the occasional gem. On my most recent trip I found a cache of early 70s rock (The Who, Rolling Stones, Kinks) all in pristine condition. Nice way to fill some holes in my collection as most record stores would price these at $7-$15 each. Here at Goodwill - a buck a pop. Four stars for records. read more

I've been to this Goodwill many times and always had a pleasant experience. Employees have always seemed in good spirits and the two floors of merchandise provide ample browsing opportunities. In the past this place was rather in need of cleaning and organization, but I'm happy to say they've made great strides in this department. So long as you don't mind the older building and obligatory Goodwill funk, skip the Central Square Goodwill and stick with this one instead. Read on for a comparison of the two, as I experienced them: Davis Square Goodwill: -Great selection of books, especially hardcover, with new ones showing up frequently -Wide selection of clothing for both men and women, including lots of items of surprisingly good quality -Decent collection of kids' stuff, including a good selection of children's books and VHS tapes -Decent collection of housewares, but key items are often missing -Generally friendly staff -Generally clean and well organized, with no obtrusive piles of random merchandise on the floor -Always people browsing but rarely feels crowded -Calendar of discounts is clearly posted at register. Prices are generally easy to spot and return policy is thoughtfully posted where it's most likely to be needed (at the electronics). -Two full floors of Goodwill goodness Central Square Goodwill: -Only a couple shelves of books; looked picked-over already -Good selection of women's clothing; decent collection for men -Decent set of kids' stuff, but mostly clothing and a few media items. I will say that I have not been brave and/or patient enough to brave the clothing section here, but the basement is absolutely wonderful. As a thrifting/consignment freak, I was worried about moving to the city and finding all the thrifting joints too picked over to find anything. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised at the homewares section at the Davis Goodwill. We found some hilarious and amazing decor for our apartment--- 70's framed layered glass art--- cross-stitchings-- and a really amazing birdhouse. Compared to the Central Square store this store here is a million times better. I couldn't believe at the center Square store they had ripped and torn clothes most of them were filthy and almost every jacket was $50 and above! I've never seen at the Davis Square store one item that wasn't in perfect condition. They also have great sales at the end of the season and they are very professional and treat that customers with a lot of courtesy. compared to the one in Central Square the employees at the Davis Square store obviously love their job while the ones at Central Square definitely need attitude adjustments. not to mention that none of the clothes are put in order an Central Square store by color and almost all of them are stuff that you would not sell to anyone or even give away to a homeless person they are rags! read more

I drop off stuff here all the time, but barely buy anything unless a daughter convinces me that she's found something (flip flops, book, etc.) that she can't live without. My wife did find an amazing cashmere sweater there once. The basement is enormous and I'm sure that I could find something if I had the patience. Drop offs are fairly easy considering that there isn't any parking. Someone is always accepting donations and ready to sign a receipt. They accept EVERYTHING and trust me I've pushed it. I have found some true treasures here, mixed among the detritus, and have resold quite a few items on Ebay to make a nice profit. The customers cover the broad spectrum of human society- Tufts students, teachers, moms, hobos and bohemians. Some assume all you will find at the Goodwill store is broken junk-not so- Many students moving out of their dorms simply donate their wares to this place- I have donated bags of clothing, brand new vcr, bike and tv to this place, as i didn't have room in my apt. If you have a sharp eye, you will find items that you might be able to resell on Ebay for a profit. Not for the pretentious crowd who will only buy unused items- but if you are frugal, and don't mind reading a book that has had previous owners, it's the place for you. This Goodwill used to be one of my go-to browsing spots but after a couple of recent visits, never again. They remodeled a few months ago so I'd been looking forward to the new store. It does look nicer and a bit more organized. Unfortunately, after they reopened they raised their prices. I hadn't paid too much attention to prices before they closed so not sure how much clothing went up but I was surprised that coats were now $30. I've bought a lot of housewares, office supplies, and other random stuff there over the years and prices could be pretty random but were always reasonable and sometimes a total steal. Not any more. I saw partially used skeins of yarn which were more than you'd pay at the local craft chains for a brand new skein (more than double the cost if you shop with coupons at those stores). They had some new stuff from IKEA that they seemed to be charging the same or almost the same price as IKEA. I saw plastic drawers that were cheaper than they would have been new but given the condition were a rip off. You could get something similar at a dollar store for far cheaper. Prices for dishes were way up and to me didn't seem worth it. The quality and condition of what they're selling hasn't changed at all (very rarely is stuff brand new, sometimes you'll find things in decent condition but they also sell stuff that is very dirty and damaged). Anyway, if you're a good shopper you can probably find some of the stuff they carry at retail stores for cheaper or close to the same price especially if you use coupons or keep an eye out for sales or shop at bargain stores. Their clothing is still cheaper overall than a lot of retail stores but not always. They carry a wide range of brands so there are some cheaper brands which could be cheaper or the same price on clearance at a regular retail or discount store. I wouldn't recommend Goodwill for bargains anymore nor will I support them with donations (which I'll split between Boomerangs and the MIT Student Furniture Exchange). Very disappointed. read more

Found two great items in the donation bins in the front of the shop today. I was not aware that I could not purchase anything from those bins. There was no noticeable sign and I don't understand why they don't place the bins elsewhere if the items in it are really that STRICTLY off limits. But I found an antique globe I really liked, and my friend who is an aerospace enthusiast found a wooden plane set he really wanted to purchase too. However, we were approached by a staff who told us the items in the bins were off limits and were to be "processed" first whatever that means. There are plenty of items downstairs that are unpriced so I don't exactly see nor understand what processing items in those bins even mean. I could've easily said I found it downstairs had they not seen me and the cashiers wouldn't even have known. Anyway, the owner who had just dropped the donations off was still in the shop and overheard us. And because he really appreciated how enthusiastic my friend was about airplanes, he wanted him to have it. It's nice to have someone who knows how to appreciate it. And so he tried to retrieve it from the bin, having just dropped it off two minutes ago, only to have the staff tell him no and that whatever is dropped in the bin cannot be retrieved. The staff insisted that he couldn't do anything about it. Good customer service would understand that keeping a customer happy and coming back means more than just a few bucks. My friend has never had this problem at the Goodwill in Allston before. And I don't believe there is no room for flexibility for a person who had JUST dropped off his donation 120 seconds ago. I mean given a general situation, what if it was an accident?? If someone's wedding ring had fallen in, is it suddenly a donation that cannot be retrieved?? You must be able to budge a little. After all that, he was only able to tell us was that we would have to wait a few days till it's processed. But by then more than likely someone would have already purchased it or a staff would have kept it! So thanks Goodwill in Davis Square. I also don't believe that owner will be donating anytime soon again as he left rather petrified. read more

the turnover at this goodwill is very high- lots of new stuff on a regular basis. an employee once told me that they fill more than a dozen bins with donated items everyday. the staff is friendly and helpful. the place is as neat and tidy as a goodwill can get. it is also easily accessible by the davis square redline mbta train stop. just like every other goodwill, they have a little bit of everything and it takes a time and perhaps a few repeat visits to find a gem. there is no minimum purchase to use your debit/credit card. there is a separate clothing section for plus size women. bonus: management is pretty strict. fewer crazy people hanging out in and around the store and the store does not smell like pee! hooray for living a sustainable lifestyle. happy thrifting! read more

This place can't be beat for used books/records/cds. They are $1 or $2 each. I have to be dragged away from this store because the book selection traps me in. I don't know why people would give away brand new books but I am not complaining! read more

This is a pretty good Goodwill! Sure, it could smell a bit more inviting and have more than two dressing rooms, but the employees are always ridiculously friendly (whether you're dropping stuff off or here to browse) and the selection is good. They seem to have about twice as many books as the BU Goodwill, which is a plus for me. The special costume section around Halloween was super cute and useful for any last minute bargain seekers. This place is awesome! Where else can you get a new looking juicy sweatshirt (retails around $130) for $5? That's right....$5! Everything is cheap, the sales people are nice, and for a Goodwill it is remarkably clean. Highly recommend coming here. read more

Weird green color, but really warm $20. Gray v-neck cashmere sweater Ann Taylor $5 Men's green lambswool cardigan from Brooks Brothers with the tags still on (misfiled with the women's clothing). $5. Boy's Brooks Brothers white dress shirt $2. What can I say, it's as if all of Somerville is shopping for me. One of the best things is that if I buy pants there, they've probably been pre-shrunk (which is probably why they ended up at good will). I also think there are a lot of clothes bought on-line that didn't fit or maybe didn't look right, but people were too busy to return. read more

I have enjoyed for years going into Goodwill in Somerville in till September 11 2020.I went in this day mainly to bring my reciet in because I was over charged from the week before by $5.00. I spent over a hour shopping first.Very excited about the things I was about to purchase.When I started to pay for my things I took out my reciet to show them the over charge.The cashier said while she was ringing my things up she would call the manager.Then life changed for the worst.The manager walked up to me.I showed her my reciet.Marissa informed me she would not refund the money.I said ok just wanted you to know this was happening also.She said she was the manager and she could make that decision.I said ok I shopped all the time in there and goodwill mission statement says the shopper was there first priority.She said I was out of the store and she was calling the police.The police came said she was within her rights to put me out of the store right or wrong for no reason at all.I could not buy my things that I really wanted that day.I came back after a few minutes to ask her how long I was out of store.Marrisa said for life unless I apologize .I said I would not apologize for what she did even thro I wanted to be able to shop there and buy my things that day.I felt that I did not disrespect anyone.I was the one that was disrespected.I no longer can shop in a store that I've shopped in for years because of one bad manager not going by Goodwills mission statement.People steel all the time in that store and never are held accountable.I pay and. someone can walk up to me and say your out for life for no reason.This is one of the meanest things someone could do to a 65 year old woman on 911 who just had mayor surgery that month..I shared this with her...Marissa didn't care. read more

I got a wok here for SEVEN DOLLARS. I also got a working printer for $4, a really cute dress for $2, a bunch of cups and silverware for $6, and a scanner for $4. A former roommate got a bed here for $20. But seriously, the wok pretty much made my life, especially since I'd just come from Bowl & Board across the street where I'd been checking out one for like a hundred bucks. Friendly staff and very neat and tidy (as compared to other Goodwill stores). If you are a plus-size woman, this is the best Goodwill as there is a separate plus-size women's section. This is extremely helpful as there's nothing worse than looking for a pair of pants and going through hundreds of pants sizes 00 to 30. Very close to the T as well. read more

At first I thought this was just one of those Goodwills that has just clothing and nothing else but then I go into the basement and that's when I realize it was worth the bike ride over. If you're not looking for clothes there's furniture, vinyls, books, movies, assorted appliances and much more awaiting you downstairs; in other words everything essential for a thrift shop. In addition I was most satisfied by the prices; I thought $5.00 for a VCR with cords wasn't shabby, and I even found a Panasonic flip clock radio in the appliance section. Just 3.99! That just wouldn't have happened at the thrift shop I went to in Albuquerque when I lived there, it just wouldn't have happened. So if you're in need of something important I highly recommend this Goodwill store because there's a good chance you'll find what you're looking for. read more

Customer experience is garbage: - When asked how much the unlabeled 12 year old trivial pursuit game costs, they say it's $17. You're out of your mind. - They insist that a fabric remnant with a ragged-cut edge and the original selvage on the other edge is actually a scarf, and should be priced as such. - When asked about return policies, they give you plenty of information that makes it sound like no problem. Then after you've paid for your items, they tell you as you're walking away you can only get store credit for the return. Go to the Salvation Army Store instead. read more

As far as Goodwills and thrift stores in general go, this one is alright. They do have a lot of women's clothes, there is also a decent selection of men's but it's not quite as extensive. The vinyl is well stocked and easy to browse - a major plus for me. There isn't much in the way of flatware besides coffee mugs and very sparse cookery items (although I did get a couple dinky pots there once.) They do have a pretty good section for used paperbacks - nothing beats getting some classics for 50 cents each. It can be a bit of a madhouse on occasion and the staff is a bit abrupt sometimes. read more

This Goodwill used to be a lot better; it's been sliding for a while. The biggest irritation for me is that 80% of the items are not priced. That's right, not priced. And most of those are the basement floor items, so you literally have to take the item and walk upstairs and wait in line to get a price. I was told today, "They're supposed to be marked, but a lot of times they aren't." Books, clothes, DVDs, CDs, VCRs are easier because the prices are based on category, so all hardcovers are 2.99 and all softcovers are 1.99. Furniture tends to be overpriced, as well. Which brings me to the 2nd irritation: their prices are also going up. $2.00 for a mass market paperback isn't a great price. It would be nice if they would at least create more accurate book categories and price accordingly; .50 to .99 for a MM paperback seems a lot fairer. Same is true for clothes. A stained cheap tshirt costs the same as higher quality dress blouse. Doesn't make sense. They get 3.5 stars for their clothes organization: by gender (not always accurately), category (shirts, pants, etc) and color. They get 1.5 stars for their book organization: adult or child. No separation of fiction from non-fiction even. They do have clothes sales based on tag color - I think their website tells more, and Tuesdays seniors get a 50% discount. read more

I really do like this place. If you have the time to search through all the racks you can find some good deals. Last time I was here I found a brand new rugby style shirt with the tags still on it for $5.99. I have to laugh when people complain of high prices at Goodwill. Are you kidding me? Have you never shopped at other thrift or consignment stores? Goodwill has the cheapest prices around. And it's a treasure trove. I find the most beautiful, fun and practical clothes and sometimes lamps, household items, etc for dirt cheap. The workers are usually pleasant, if sometimes a little short, but they're usually very busy, so I don't take issue with that. read more

The problem I have with this Goodwill is that it's a wannabe vintage store masquerading as a thrift, with none of the advantages of either. It's very hard to discover any "finds" when they mark up anything they think has style, no matter what the condition. I've noticed this at a lot of the Goodwills - suddenly, there is some hipster looking manager saying, "Oh, that's a very special Alfred Dunner shirt from 1992, let's price it at 10.99". The heart and soul of thrifting is to find something great at a reasonable price. It's hard to find that here. For the same money I'd rather go to a real vintage clothing store. But if you want stained t-shirts for 4.49 and that lovely eau de thrift, this is your place. read more

This Goodwill is a fun place to shop. It's filled with everything you could want, need or just plain nostalgic items. People complain that it's jam packed but that's the great thing about the place. They get so much merch everyday that you can get anything. People have mentioned in past reviews that they found dirty things. You will find that in any thrift stores. Plus, people have to keep in mind that the headquarters that ships out the clothes is employed by all types of people. Special Needs Persons included. So one mans thrash is another mans treasure. I used to love coming here and rummaging for hidden treasures but my recent experiences have been disappointing. I am especially disappointed w the staff. The avg wait time for checkout is 10-15mins which I think is too long for a wkday morning. Today was horrible; the two cashiers were chatting it up w their customers for 15 mins!! while the line grew and grew...I appreciate small tall sometimes but not at the expense of the 8 customers in line. Also, they have increased prices for children's clothes to $2.99 from $1.99. I know 3 bucks is still cheap but honestly I can get new clothing for a buck or two more at a clearance sale. All in all, I may go back occasionally but no longer love this store and have become really disappointed w it. read more

You can find some great gems here...I would say to go (if you can) early in the am during the week...Avoid prime time shopping hours, it can become a serious madhouse. Don't waste your time here. I am one of the oldest visitors at this location. You used to be able to find great stuff for bargain prices. However, prices have gone up so much now, even on non-name brand stuff. Most of the clothes are old and gross, often infested with moth holes or stains. Be careful of carpet bug larvae and bed bugs. I've definitely found some good stuff here over the years... some good records and shirts and the usual thrift store fare. But sometimes the folks at the registers are slow as the slowest molasses this side of the Mississippi. Granted, sometimes thats because they are dealing with ding-dongish customers, but not usually. To make matters worse, I've been there multiple times, suffering through an unnecessarily long line, and I'll see the woman that I suspect is a manager walk right by everyone without concern, or even worse yet, just sorta fart around behind the registers and help no one. Goodwill in general is overpriced, the clothing, shoes, and accessories look worn, zippers broken, dirty, and should be thrown out. Shoes are 20-30.00 for a "good name brand" or if they look brand new. Their return policy is odd, they will take back clothing but not shoes or purses. I bought a Coach bag in here and it had a strong odor to it. After almost two weeks of washing it and spraying it with Febreeze, nothing could get that cellar/musty odor out. When I tried to return it, the sales associates laughed at me. To prevent this from happening, they should put a poster like in some other thrifts I've been in that states their return policy. The bag was 20.00. I strongly believe they should rethink their return policy; how would I know that not even Febreeze could get the odor out? I have allergies and that bag was triggering them. How can they not even take back a bag if it affects someone'se health? It was a beautiful bag, but I sold it to another consignment store and got my full money back - in cash. Goodwill would have given me a store credit. The return policy says they will take back clothing within 14 days. To me, "clothing" means shoes and handbags; maybe to them shoes and handbags means something different. I think they should post this sign in the store warning customers this because they put stained handbags and broken shoes on the floor, sometimes knowing it is like this and they put it out because it is a brand name a lot of people want. If someone tries to fix or clean them and they can't, the customer should be able to pick out another handbag or pair of shoes if they can prove they bought the item in there - or better yet - don't put damaged, stinky merchandise out at all. Basically, you have to watch what you buy. I will not be a customer anymore in any Goodwill stores because of this incident. They should be ashamed of themselves for putting out the junk they do and charging people overinflated prices for it. They get the stuff for FREE, and their return policy is horrible because its USED already, and than they give A STORE CREDIT back. What if someone buys shoes and gets them home, finds out they are broken (it happened to a friend) or a CD someone bought doesn't work when they put it in the CD player? The chances of you spending more in the store with a store credit is higher because you have the credit and need to use it up, so you overbuy with the credit and spend more in there. read more

Good selection, very large store. Conveniently located. The women's clothing is upstairs. Downstairs (basement level) has kids clothes, men's clothes, household items, books, and records. They have a ton of glass vases along the wall downstairs (best selection I've seen at a goodwill store). I was disappointed with the skirt selection today (the couple items that interested me were too dull-looking). But it's a hit or miss place, so there will be other attempts in my future. read more

Like some of the other reviews say, Goodwill is Goodwill- the stores don't smell great, and you need to sift through tons of junk to find some good items. But if you do take that time, you will at least more often then not, find something you love. I've found a lot of Abercrombie items, Banana Republic, JCrew, etc. many in great condition. If you are looking to save cash and willing to take the time to sort through a lot of crap, then you should check out this goodwill and any other. the staff at this location is friendly and helpful as well. read more

I love this place! Almost as good as (successful) dumpster diving. Nothing feels better than rummaging through huge bins of clothes and bags and finding something cool for $4. On a recent trip, I found two name brand business skirts for $4 each! How awesome is that? Nice selection of used kitchen stuff in the basement--wish I had known about this place before going all the way to Ikea when I furnished my apartment. On the lower floor, also check out the used book selection. Less than a dollar each. I found a brand new Salman Rushdie hardcover as well as an out of print Chinese vegetarian cookbook that had some kick ass recipes! Very disorganized, but isn't diving into bins of books half the fun of getting bargains? The only reason why I can't give a 4 star review has to do with the annoying way this Goodwill organizes their clothes--by color. I still don't get the utility of that, but oh well. On weekends, expect to wait a good 30 min for the dressing rooms. And be prepared to enjoy the body odor that seems to pervade the whole place. read more

This place rots like all hell smells so bad that is crazy silly. I love the fact when i came in here a few times that the crew was kind and courteous. I dont like the fact that all the antiques or good items are put in the front window for a silent auction type of sale kinda silly if u ask me. you can never buy any big scores because the window has them all. Rent must be rediculous here, the place is always short staffed and there is always a line of 10 people ahead of me. Queit disturbing. read more

I feel kinda gross in this Goodwill - and that says a lot! I don't even bother looking through the clothes. Most times they're awful and the racks are too crowded to look through. My advice? Head straight downstairs to where all the odds and ends are. You'll find some hilarious things and useful things. It's all really cheap. And, again, be nice to the people that work there! read more
