The Goodwill Store - Used, Vintage & Consignment Near Me - Cambridge, Massachusetts

I've been going to this Goodwill store for over 30 years and it's really gone downhill. At one time it sold some furniture, had a GREAT housewares section, and a good selection of clothes. Now it sells mostly clothes. Staff people in the past were friendly and helpful, now they range from friendly/helpful to being outright surly, displaying no interpersonal skills at all. Some of the previous managers and staffers were really nice, no idea why they left. The store hours make no sense at all. The store originally opened for years at 9 am. That changed to 10 am for a period of several years, then to 11 am, which is nuts, as all other stores in the area open at 10 am or earlier. This morning I found a group of people from out of state waiting outside the store. They had arrived for a 10 am opening, the time that their local Goodwill opens. This happens all the time. Please go back to the 10 am opening and stop focusing so much on clothes, housewares used to fly off the shelves too! Oh - people also think this store opens at 10 am because IT STILL SAYS SO ON THE INTERNET! I tried to speak to someone at the Goodwill headquarters in Boston re: all of this and you CAN'T. You get a recorded message that says "press 1 for store locations", etc. but you can't speak with an actual manager or supervisor. All you can do is call the local store and speak with the manager who presides over all of the above mentioned problems that he obviously can't or won't address. Pretty pathetic. read more

This Goodwill smells awful. It kind of reminds me of urine but mixed with something else. I stayed for a grand total of two minutes before deciding I had to leave. The stuff inside seemed okay, somewhat organized. A lot of the stuff looked pretty worn though. Not my favorite Goodwill store. read more

I have been visting this for about 15 years. They last five of these the quality of the help, managers have been terrible. I am sorry I have to waste your time to ask what the color the day is. In the last six months there has been a wee wee smell near the corner where the dresses are. All the colthes are jammed packed on the racks (women's). You can not even pull the colthes out to look at them. The aisle in the womens section is to small. I have never seen a person in a wheel chair in the store. For a non profit that works with the disable It is pretty sad that they can not even shop there.....Shame on Goodwill for not making there stores accessible and jamming the colthes on the racks. read more

I was looking for a cookies jar but they don't have them. They used have a lot of nice things but the store hasn't been the same. The manager was staring at me I asked if there something wrong why would u do that . Did I do something for u to look at me like that it wasn't nice so I left. Pretty good goodwill in the center of Boston. This goodwill is quite popular and gets packed at popular times. There are many cashiers available so not a very long wait. I will say, the aisles are a bit cramped and it's not the most organized goodwill, but the do have a good selections of clothing items. read more

I definitely still enjoy getting a great deal here, but there are a few negatives I have come across lately. I usually try to shop here on weekdays, but recently I noticed that even on a crowded weekend they had only one person ringing up at the register. The other one was just chatting and this made for a very, very long line. Also, they've since taken one dressing room (out of 2) out of commission for storage. Ugh. Everything else is the same, you still have to sort through lots of Yuck to find a Yay but if you have the time it's usually worth it. I use to love this goodwill but after COVID I guess they changed management and staff. The store is great but the staff is the worst you can get. All I heard the staff talk about was how much clothes they were going to take and keep for themselves and how they put aside tons of items to take home. I don't think people donate items for the workers to keep them. They were all very ghetto and obnoxious. The checkout women was just as bad she had a long line and was on her phone while people were waiting she completely didn't care. I live in Central Square so this review is after dozens of visits. Some rambling thoughts about this place... 1) Probably one of the cleanest GW in Boston ... I am a thriftinista so I can say this with some authority. It's not just the smell (less than usual) but also the orderliness of this place. You can tell the employees put some effort into their jobs here. Also, it is now vastly improved after the remodeling a year or two ago. 2) The merchandise is pretty B-quality here. I don't think I've ever gotten any clothes here that I liked. The exception, however, is the houseware/electronics. I kid you not but I found a BRAND NEW, in the box, BB8 toy here (you know, that Star Wars toy that everyone went gaga for this past Xmas). I also got a mint condition Keurig here for $6. So yeah, check in here for the non-clothing items. 3) The staff here are GOLDEN. The nicest staff EVER and they have so much patience for the crazies that come in here. read more

I like a good mall shopping trip every now and then, but I must admit that perusing the Central Square Goodwill on a Sunday morning after brunch is one of my not-so-secret guilty pleasures. There's something relaxing about sifting through castaways looking for that diamond in the rough... and something thrilling about finally finding it! I will credit Harvard students with providing the steady stream of J. Crew and Banana Republic clothing that overwhelms this Goodwill's racks. But in addition to a great assortment of clothes, this store's housewares section is amazing. I've scored goodies from Crate & Barrel, Williams Sonoma and several brand-name cookware suppliers that have saved me big bucks. I've never been to the Goodwill in Davis Square so I can't provide a comparison. However, based on what others have said I will have to check it out soon! read more

Bargain-hunting is in my blood. But so is being environmentally-conscious so I donate my old clothes that are in good condition to thrift stores that benefit those less fortunate. I've taken the opportunity to clean out my closets a few times while I've lived here (dang Boston closets are tiiiiny!) and this store has been the beneficiary of my cleanings. I would love to eventually pare down my closet to a well-edited selection of clothes I love and would wear over and over for years so I guess the small closets are a good thing. Of course, I have to look around while I'm here. There's a small selection of old records at the front, interesting window displays to lure people in (me things the banana peel on the next-to-bottom shelf doesn't help), and as you go deeper back, a huge selection of clothes. Looked like flat prices e.g. all shirts are $x, all jeans are $x, etc. But there are also housewares and accessories. You have to be ready to dig and bring your hand sanitizer. Mostly mid-level/mall designers. The only thing that caught my eye was an apple green Hermes Birkin at the front of the store that was obviously in fair condition (smudges all over the leather, broken magnetic clasp) because why else would it be at Goodwill? read more

I'm a regular customer at the Goodwill store in Somerville's Davis Square, and thought I'd pop by its sister store in Central Square... Nowhere near as good as the Somerville store . The one in Cambridge is smaller, and not the same variety of bricabrac, and i didn't get the same 'neighborhood vibe'. Frankly, it's nowhere near as good as the Davis Square branch. The money goes to a good cause, so I recommend locals shop here, but as far as Goodwill shops go, it was not very impressive. Shop at the Davis Square branch instead.. read more

One of my favorite goodwill locations! I go on a regular basis. Great selection of women and men's clothes if you have time! They also are a great place to find fun decor things for the home! My latest find was a pair of brown leather boots that I researched to find that they retail for 150 bucks. They were barely worn and in great condition! read more

I agree with most of the reviewers: -majority of stuff is clothes -very little in housewares -mostly working-class poor are shopping there -dressing room is large and reasonably clean -prices are flat rate for everything: one price for tshirts, one price for skirts, one price for all hardcover books, and so forth. So the Armani stuff is just as cheap as the crappy stuff. -I've found some gems but I also see a lot of clothing w holes, rips, stains -- the Goodwill stores in San Francisco would just have thrown them away. -Found nice Armani X, Sigrid Olsen, Ann Taylor, Forth & Towne -Prepare to feel like a tool when you take these gems away from folks that deserve a break read more

I was really shocked to see used winter coats starting at $29.99 and up, for that much money you can go buy a new coat at Walmart, Marshall's, or tj maxx. I don't know if this is normal for a goodwill in a city, but back in the suburbs, you'd never see prices like that for a used coat. read more

Ah, Goodwill Cambridge. My go-to spot for cheap fall/winter knitwear. Being so near to MIT and Harvard, you're bound to get donations from a pretty well-to-do donor base. I really can't speak on the women's selection at this place, although it looks big. The men's section definitely has the occasional buried treasure items such as nearly pristine sweaters from J. Crew, Banana Republic, LL Bean, Lands End (you're in Cambridge so expect a lot of preppy labels here). I'd say the shoe section is near nonexistent, the shirts just meh, and pants not worth considering. This store is basically worthless for finding good clothes (if you care about style). I would give it zero points for clothes. BUUUUT, this place is my first stop when I need to stock up on bowls/plates/silverware/serving platters. I have gotten a full set of beautiful stemless wine glasses, large crystal punch bowls, nice white plates, and all of my silverware here for an incredible deal! If you are having a large get together **like Thanksgiving dinner** and suddenly realize you need more large serving platters, Goodwill is the way to go. read more

Since I am not a fan of buying things from some factory where there are children working in a third world country, I feel better about going to thrift stores such as this. Things are total bargains in here & the things you can find, unbelievable. I have snagged some great things here but it is hit or miss sometimes. Things could probably be cleaner in here & more organized but you can work w/ it. I have found some cute purses here & my greatest thing was a pair of Land's End snow shoes that were brand new for like $15, can't beat that. Just go & check out what you might be missing. read more

I have had some good finds here, and I hate to knock a charity, but this Goodwill is probably the worst in Boston. They have made some efforts to clean the place up a bit, but generally its pretty dirty and smelly. Now there is nothing wrong with dirty and smelly, as long as the prices match. Today I went in picked out a pair of shoes, and VHS cassette... $27.00.... I passed. Looked at some other shoes, they had an older pair with holes in the soles, and worn heals for $30. The Roxbury, and Southie, and Davis Goodwill's have lots of shoes priced between $7-$10 (even nice brands) ... without holes in the soles. I'm not sure what the deal is whit the Central Store. The electronics, etc. are haphazardly piled onto shelving, but also generally overpriced. Boomerangs across the street is cleaner, better merchandised and the prices are sooo much better, I scored a pair of vintage-y mens dress shoes in excellent condition for $6- The bottom line is disorganized, smelly and cheap is great. Every now and then you feel the need to rummage through racks of other peoples old underwear and mu mus covered in barebque sauce. That's cool, dude, I'm right there with you. I fucking love Goodwill and when you add the crack heads and baby's mamas of Central Square, it's like a thrifty paradise of profanity and funky stank. You know what I mean? It's a totally unique smell, like onions and oatmeal mixed together... Anyway, obviously it's cheap, but the selection is great too. I love the men's shirt section and if you're in to looking like a total lesbian, which I sometimes am, you'll go crazy for the flannel fiesta that is waiting for you behing these doors. Most of you have probably spent your lives mindlessly pawing at a key board with a monitor in front of you, but if you have the patience for typewriters, I highly recommend getting one at this place, because there is a large selection in the back for like ten dollars each. I hate that there is only one dressing room and I usually feel pretty filthy after I leave the place, but I still like it here and the staff are pretty friendly for a Goodwill. Clean, organized, lots of name brands. Not just the usual faded Target stuff. I don't get why people are saying it's smelly -- it's no more so than any other Goodwill, and significantly less so than some. I waited in line for 20 minutes to use one of the two dressing rooms, which wasn't fun, but the people who work there came by frequently and knocked on the doors to give the folks inside a five-minute warning. A couple who were obviously very, very high on meth were standing in line in front of me picking at each other's skin. Only one person working upfront. The last time I was there the woman charged me for an item I didn't buy and then was going to let the lady behind me in line only have to pay $20 for a whole carriage full of stuff until the woman got very rude and wanted to pay less! The place is very dirty and very disorganized! The women's clothes are not sorted by color and are filthy and many items were torn! All of their coats were way over priced $40 and up and not one decent one! People wouldn't even sell stuff at a yard sale! Go to Target and hit up their clearance rack! You will pay less and have better quality and new and clean items! The manager here needs to be let go big-time! Worst Goodwill I've ever been in! Very disappointed and disgusted! read more

I haven't written my last review of this Goodwill since back in 2013. Throwback right? Since then I've made some pretty rad findings at this location such as some nice records and a 1987 GE digital clock radio in fully functioning condition! Hurray! Plus I even found an avocado green GE hand clock radio from 1970! Rarely are radios over 40 years old found in Goodwill. (Don't ask me about the clothes lol) But I'm even happier to say that the renovations that unfortunately left the store closed for a while, were totally worth the waiting. Instead of the filthy homily carpet that the store previously lined its floors with there's now a pleasant wood floor to walk on. The electronic section's still a little hard to navigate but I've found some real treasure on its cluttered shelves that I mentioned earlier which makes it worth the effort. For the service it has always been friendly. The lines however have been a nightmare a couple times. Let's not forget the Great Goodwill Line Stall of February 2nd, 2014. My god it sends shivers down my spine recalling that eternity's wait. But accidents happen so it's nothing to hold a useless grudge over. Instead it honestly adds to the handful of memorable experiences I have to tell of my uncountable journeys to the thrift shop on Central since '13. I think I'd give this place a 3.5 really because it's not that big, but I've gotten some AWESOME stuff here. Yesterday I got a ginormous glass platter for $3!!!! It will make my turkey look the size of a pea. Oh, and I got a dish strainer, a fancy wire one that folds out into that X-design for $2. And some crate and barrel plates for $1.10. Wow, what a steal. In the past, I've gotten a pie plate, a huge glass bowl that had it's own wrought-iron like stand, and a silver platter, and some wine glasses. You certainly have to look through things and figure out what's not broken/scratched, but it will yield some good finds. read more

This place is full of mysteries!! We came here to drop off donations, and the process was very fast and easy. We perused the shoe rack and found a pair of barely used Cole Haan Nude Wedges for $10. It was such a steal. They're super comfortable and did not have any scratches or noticeable wear. read more

I've been to this Goodwill once now, and after being spoiled at the Porter Square location, I won't be coming back. It's simply too crowded with too little good merchandise to make the hassle worthwhile, in my assessment--and I love browsing through old junk. Here's how this location stacked up to Davis, in my assessment: Central Square Goodwill: -Only a couple shelves of books; looked picked-over already -Good selection of women's clothing; decent collection for men -Decent set of kids' stuff, but mostly clothing and a few media items. I didn't see any toys -Good collection of housewares -Only went once, but staff seemed stressed and were curt bordering on rude -Though generally clean, expect to encounter some piles of merchandise strewn so haphazardly that it's difficult to pass by other shoppers. While I was there a man actually tripped on stuff. -Narrow isles and generally a crowded feel -One long floor with a small wing in the back-left -Few policies posted, and prices can be hard to find. Davis Square Goodwill: -Great selection of books, especially hardcover, with new ones showing up frequently -Wide selection of clothing for both men and women, including lots of items of surprisingly good quality -Decent collection of kids' stuff, including a good selection of children's books and VHS tapes -Decent collection of housewares, but key items are often missing -Generally friendly staff -Generally clean and well organized, with no obtrusive piles of random merchandise on the floor -Always people browsing but rarely feels crowded -Two full floors of Goodwill goodness -Calendar of discounts is clearly posted at register. Prices are generally easy to spot and return policy is thoughtfully posted where it's most likely to be needed (at the electronics). read more

This place is a gem! Way bigger than it looks from the outside. You have to do a bit more digging and the layout isn't quite as intuitive as the Davis sq and Allston locations but there are some amazing pieces here.
