I love this Goodwill location. I have scored SO many awesome finds! I visit often because I live in the area, and walk out with something amazing at least once a week. I always see customers with cool furniture and knick-knacks, but I never have much luck. I've also found the clothing section to be really hit or miss. However, I've had the most success with accessories and books- I'm a purse hound and a book collector. :) The staff is always friendly and relatively laid-back, which is no small feat, considering the number of customers in the store and all the crazies they must deal with. This place has been such a goldmine for me that I almost don't want to tell you all about it. Definitely worth frequent visits. read more

I'm a frequent browser here. The store is consistently clean, the staff often do "deals" with customers for items lacking price tags or with damage, and the stock turnover is very fast. See something, snag something or else have a tissue in hand to dry your tears of remorse. There are a good number of UnderArmour, NB, Nike and other sportswear. I've discovered lovely Danskin and other high quality yoga togs. As others have said, it's fairly easy to find natural fabrics such as cashmere, alpaca, fine merino, linen, silk and flax. I'm not telling you which label I covet and consistently find because there aren't that many, but overall, seek by color and ye shall find. And the combined basement archeological/anthropological exploration is simply better than any computer game. read more

i could spend hours here, & admit, yes, i have!! I love that the store is basically organized by colors. I start w/ Shoes......then dresses, shirts, skirts, jeans....I do think the recent hike in jean prices is ridiculous. I am So less inclined to even browse the jeans now. Last time i did purchase a pair of jeans i made the mistake of not checking inner thigh wear, i paid about 8 bucks for a pair of skinny jeans i got to wear twice. yeah, i guess....i could patch them. The staff is AWESOME. I only complain that the music played is under par. I ve been visiting for years. The fellow who used to manage opened Studio 54? in Allston. he played awesome music! Never thought I'd like second-hand clothes because I feel a little icky about the idea.. but I gotta say, this Goodwill Store has some pretty nice stuff that are in really good condition and awesome prices. I'm actually a big fan. -I found my dad a nice toiletry bag from LL Bean, Very Good condition. -Got myself a big Pregnancy Bible book. After spending a lot of money for books on this subject on Kindle, I was amazed that this book has everything I need and I paid $3 for it! :) -Got myself a long flowy summer skirt that I love for $5. -Got another long career skirt for $5, great quality fabric. I was just Googling about this store to find out the time it closes so I can go shop after work today.. that's when I found the times listed Yelp. I figure since I'm here, I'd give it a good review because I really can't wait to go back! :-) Check this place out if you're in the neighborhood. Not only that, they have an eclectic selection of jewlery: bangles, earrings, necklaces, etc. I wouldn't exactly call this place your trend-setting joint a la French Connection. Goodwill...you let me down.... I have been an avid fan of Goodwill and Salvation Army stores for quite some time, so I was thrilled when I moved into Davis Square and found out there was one right up the street from me!! But no....everything in the housewares section just looked old, broken and dirty....and I know it is all used stuff, but this Goodwill just didn't make the cut for me my first visit here....It didn't seem to have much organization and there was no furniture at all...and that is the one thing I love Goodwill for. I guess they have a lot of dishes, so if you need that then you might love this place. But if not, you will probably leave, sad, empty handed and alone like I did....wait...i wasn't alone i was with my boyfriend, but we felt alone since we went in wanting to buy the store out! read more

This is my favorite thrift store! I immediately head downstairs to the housewares section. While Goodwill has tons of clothes, my favorite is the housewares -- dishes, picture frames, table settings, lamps, linens etc. I always find something unique These finds are a great way to spruce up your apartment for just a few dollars or buy everything you'd need to get started with a first apartment. I also love the board games section for a game night. Usually they're only $5 or less! I love easily supporting second hand shopping. read more

Unfortunately, the manager wrote to me offline... a quick sorry, a claim not to recall the specific problem-- oh, and a complaint about my review. (sigh) What started out as a possibly nice gesture underscores the problems I see in this store. People are shopping there and need to be treated like people and not as an obstacle to the store's staff. It's a Goodwill. A Goodwill that happens to be located in Davis Square, where a whole bunch of artsy hippies and hipsters and other trend-setting youth live nearby, just waiting to clean out their closets and their kitchens and release their used treasures into the world of thrift... So there's some good stuff. I donate my clothes here when Poor Little Rich Girl won't give me money for them. Since I bring some pretty nice stuff here regularly, I can only assume others do the same. The digging can be tough, and I always feel that Goodwills all have a smell all their own... not a good one. It's the old person/ mothballs/ clothing-that's-been-in-the-attic-for-50-years smell that repels me from buying anything but the most fabulous of thrift finds. This is certainly one of the nicest Goodwills I've ever been in. For one, it's fantastically large and for whatever reason, there are a lot of fashionable and vintage kicks to be had here. The section intended for male presenting folks is huge (relative to what other similar stores offer) and the prices are ridiculously low. There are even some nice business-casual options too! The clothes are also arranged by both color and size making browsing very easy, unlike many other similar stores where you might have to rummage for a while before stumbling on your size. The housewares/electronic section even appears to have mostly functional items. That's nearly unheard of in the thrift world! I whole heartedly approve. read more

This is not a place you should go if you are looking for something in particular to purchase. Of course, if you are seeking out something specific, your thrift shop game may be off in general. Just a tip. Any thrift shop's inventory is a direct result of the surrounding community, and this Goodwill's proximity to apparently brand-name-loving West Somerville and Cambridge means its stock is pretty on-point. Or, at least good enough to brave the faint smell of stale cigarettes that permeates the place. Today I picked up a green leather Coach purse and Woolrich bag, new with tags, for a little more than $20. Retail value for the duo would probably be in the $300 range. I'm into it! A tip for purse/bag seekers: they keep the nicest ones behind the counter. Don't be afraid to ask to check them out, as they're still pretty affordable. Aforementioned Coach bag was stowed behind the counter, hiding its cool $15.00 price tag. I've seen Dooney here, too. Other highlights: dresses (along the right wall) and books (in the basement). And belts! I really don't know why people drop loads of money on leather belts when I've been able to snag so many good ones dirt-cheap from secondhand stores. Cons? I personally find the sort-by-color way of organizing shirts so overwhelming that I haven't bought many tops here. The pants section is also so huge that it's hard to know where to begin. read more

I have ONE awesome shoe from this Goodwill! A few months back I was dropping some stuff at PLRG and whatever they would not take, I dropped off at Goodwill. OF COURSE since I just emptied my closet, I needed to spend at least 20 minutes trying to find something new to fill it ;) Well, there is SO MUCH packed in this store, even in comparison to your typical thrift store that I was impressed. Then I got SUPER excited when I saw their huge shoe selection. I started digging through and in typical fashion found lots of cute shoes way too small for my wide 8.5/9 feet! Shoe shopping always makes me jealous of all of you lucky girls size 5/6 that get all the awesome vintage shoes! But I digress, after a bunch of searching in these huge fabric bins on wheels (the kind they carry towels around in, in hotels) I found the MOST amazing vintage black patent leather heel with gold trim. It was in perfect condition, but I only had one! You see, the shoes are not really "organized" sometimes a pair of shoes is rubber banded together , but usually it comes undone and so there are just piles and piles of shoes you are sorting through. Well, after about an hour, I felt as though I might give up. I was starting to get hungry and tired and lose faith that I might ever find my matching sole mate! In a rash decision I decided to simply buy the ONE shoe -- thinking I would return, possibly when there were less shoes and find its mate! Well, I actually did remember to come back about two weeks later, but after an additional 20 minutes, STILL no perfect match :( So even though this place probably gets 4 stars for having so much stuff, it loses a star and major love for being so unorganized that I could only find one shoe! P.S. If anyone out there is as CRAZY as I am and bought that other shoe, let me know! We can work something out! read more

I didn't have a very good experience at this Goodwill Store and I'm quite bummed. Mainly because of the pretty quick about face as it's stench was making me a little sick to my stomach. Let me tell you, I've smelled worse - but for your visual this worse was a tannery where the hides were just fresh on arrival in 100 degree heat on a Hot summer China day. The smells in this store were a close second. And that makes me sad. There were varying degress of all kinds of smells. Kitty/Fishy/Wet Rug/Dog/BO/Mold/Must/Wet Sock and so on. I must clarify I don't think it was the clientelle or the staff, but rather, I think it was the store and the items. If that's the case then I'm ashamed to see that the well off donate stinky clothes. That's so wrong. Which then leads me to get on my pedestal and ask people to consider what they are donating I mean really at least clean it! And yes, incase you are wondering, I do donate to Goodwill and proudly so. Too many people in the US are running off to support all the other countries in the world (which is a good thing) but at the same time our own people are being neglected. Please donate gently used, clean clothes as opposed to items sitting in a moldy basement. (Note I am not assuming any Yelpers do this because well you guys ROCK AND HAVE WAY MORE CLASS.) But someone, somewhere is donating dirty and well I was kind of grossed out and that adversely affects this store. Maybe I'm just a narrow minded smell snob, but hey even the poor deserve better than this. At the end of the day I think it serves it's purpose, well which truley isn't me. It's for the less fortunate that deserve to be clothed well without paying inflated prices. There are two kinds of clothing shoppers, those who want marketers and designers, and trendy employees to decide what you will wear and limit your choices and have selected outfits on mannequins, and then those who love digging through racks of embarrassing threads for that one shirt you must have. I've always enjoyed the thrill of the hunt of thrift and vintage shopping. Thrift shopping tends to have more to dig through, where as vintage, the owner already did the hard work finding all the good stuff, hence the much higher price tag. This Good Will location is the only one I've been to, so I am comparing it to my years of shopping at Salvation Army, Savers, Amvets, and Saint Vincents. Depending on what you want it can be hit or miss. Their selection is completely based on what people donate, so its not their fault if they don't have things you like/want. With recent renovations the place is brighter, cleaner, and easier to navigate the seas of clothing. If you just need a dress shirt or suit jacket for a job interview and the only fickleness in you is color then you will find what you want easily. If you are like me and only want Western Shirts and Cardigan Sweaters, then it will take many trips to enlarge your wardrobe. This location is great for finding vinyl records and books. I recently picked up a bunch of great kids books for my son to be at a dollar each, and a copy of Melville's Short Stories in hardcover for two bucks! All the money goes to good use helping out the community and giving people jobs whom otherwise may have trouble landing one. So support your city and shop at Good Will. read more

I've been going to this Goodwill location for three years now. Overall, the selection is really good at this store. I regularly donate items and then walk back out of the store with more great stuff. That said, the pricing is starting to get out of control. I am not referring to the regular price of shirts, pants. etc. I just have noticed that more and more items are getting special, higher prices. This year, holiday sweaters are kept behind the register and cost $15 each. Really. While I know that Goodwills around the country are starting to charge a little more for these since they know people are looking for them, $15 is absolutely insane. Sure, a $15 sweater seems like a bargain compared to $25 for a new one, but I'm not comparing Goodwill prices to store prices. If Goodwill is charging that much for a used sweater, I'm going to another thrift store or buying a cheap one on eBay. I also saw a lot of dresses priced higher than the regular price. They also had a bunch of wedding dresses, one of which was about $500. I'm sure that someone will want to pay that price after all of your customers have pawed over that dress in the regular racks. Coats all seemed to get special prices, whether they were gently used or not, or a label or not. I think this Goodwill location would be wise to remember that although people with money buy clothes there, so do a lot of people who don't have much money at all. read more

This place is always FULL of hidden treasures, and if you avoid PDA with the staff, you're sure to find some satisfying deals. OMFG! NO! NO! NO! I swear, this must be what smell-o-vision is like. Each step I walked a new smell entered my nose. First, smoke, then B.O., then Pee.....then I hightailed it out of there. I used to love to thrift when I was younger, but as I get older, I feel guilty from taking from those who really need to shop here. I also can't stomach much of what I used to be able to, like when I was always in an altered state of mind. Hohum. I feel there are more people that can benefit from buying things there than myself. I feel rude to take from them. Plus, after going to the one in Davis, I may be completely turned off forever. I have been shopping at Goodwill's for almost 20 years and this one is by far one of the worst. I don't care who shops there or about their "clientèle" ...NO ONE should have to shop in a place that smells so horrific. Please goodwill.....keep it clean. That's 5 stars, for as good as Goodwill gets - Goodwill stores have their own separate scale. Giant selection, bigger than almost any other Goodwill I've seen, and I've seen a lot of them, having been raised on thrift stores and garage sales. That's coupled with blanket low prices - $4 for a long-sleeve shirt, $7 for a suit jacket (for the Yelp Red Carpet event coming up!). Was disappointed in one shirt I was interested in having a stain, but so it goes. I especially like their effort to arrange clothes by color, but it would have been nice to have them arranged by size as well. So much better than the Goodwill in Central Square! read more

As a self-proclaimed Goodwill guru, this is the best Goodwill in the Boston area, and that's the reason it gets 5 stars. The customer service is just as mediocre as any other local thrift store, but the selection is so incredible it's overwhelming! Some of my best finds at this location include: - leather designer Chloe ballet flats for $5 - a leather designer Coach purse for $5 - a black knit sweater with sequins all over it - a real brown fur coat for $20 - a long sleeve white tee with a screen print of a giant black and white cat with yellow eyes on the front The list goes on! Forget the Comm. Ave location that has been picked through by college hipsters, or the Central square location that is the size of a shoebox - this location is big, the selection is ever-changing, and it's right next door to Buffalo Exchange! read more

Brands I saw today - le sportsac, burberry, gucci, prada, etienne, and more. Those are all the ones I remember. There were lots. The kids section is pretty dumpy, but I was able to find Hanna here and Gymboree there. There was zero organization in the kids section, so don't expect to find a brand you want, especially in the size you need. Kids shoes are all over the Goodwill (like upstairs in womens) so if you actually find a fairly new set of striderite shoes in your child's size, its meant to be purchased. read more

I love this Goodwill. I have come across so many fabulous finds here, but you have to have patience to pick through everything and look. If you can commit to 45 minutes in this store, you will find treasures. They are not very well stocked with vintage items ( for this check The Garment District or the higher-end Poor Little Rich Girl across the street) but you can get some great modern items here. Last week I found new Citizens of Humanity jeans for $6 and a Banana Republic 100% cashmere sweater for $3. They also have a wicked good selection of used books that you can dig through for @ $1 apiece. It's worth your while to fight off some of the loonier types who shop here and seize your bargain! read more

I have been looking for men's style boat shoes for some time, so this morning when I came upon a couple of Polo lace-ups, I didn't bother trying them on. After realizing each shoe was a different size, I wished I had tried them on before buying them. When I went back into the store to explain the predicament to my cashier, she looked at me like I was an idiot. This is where I bought the enormous hardcover version of "I Am Charlotte Simmons" by Tom Wolfe. I probably got it for $3.00. It felt like a brand new copy. There is something frustrating about going through all those appliances/computer parts and finding NOTHING of value. Cashiers are generally friendly/accomodating, despite all the crazy shit they have to deal with. Despite coming here numerous times, I have yet to see the inside of the fitting rooms. They're a nightmare. Don't even bother. There are only two despite how popular the store is. And some of the people in line were very vocal, shall we say, about other customers taking too long in there--I had the pleasure of watching some guy knocking on both doors every fifteen seconds and yelling at people to get out because he needed to try on a shirt. And then he started pretending to be the manager. It was fun to watch. I found a small corner with a full length mirror tucked away near the men's suit jackets, had my boyfriend stand in the adjacent aisle, and voila I had my own dressing room. I suggest you do the same if you're like me and don't care about trying dresses on over your clothes in the middle of the store. As others have said, this place requires digging, but I've always had that experience at thrift stores. I got a black skirt, fall Beatlesesque boots, a vintage purse, a gap shirt, and a dress for $30. The downstairs is a great adventure, especially the tacky glassware. I've found: a mug with 'super lover' on it, multicolored margarita glasses, a martini glass with a porcelain rooster in lieu of a stem, thin glasses with 'Irish coffee' written on them, eight thousand port glasses, and a personalized engraved mug that Scott got as a present for being somebody's Best Man in August of 1989. The cashiers are fun too. Mine told me my shoes were $10 as she was ringing them up and asked if that was okay with me. She also kept telling me she left her water bottle outside and asked a random customer to go see if it was still there. Lastly, I guess I've never noticed the smell. I used to like this goodwill, but now every time I come in, the downstairs area with the books smells like a toilet. I mean, it smells like literal feces. I don't know if there's something rotting down there or if someone pooped on a bookshelf or if they just have a particularly smelly customer who comes in at the same time as I do, but it smells like ass and garbage, discouraging me from coming in, which is really inconvenient since I used to go here specifically to pick up books to read, and there's nowhere else to buy a book in Davis square. I give it 5 stars for their used book selection. I always walk away with 3 or 4 books - lots of high-brow mixed in with low-brow, everything from theater to literary theory to science to pulp fiction. Takes some serious digging through the many shelves, but I always find gems, my last was a Philip Roth book. Occasionally I find some odd household thing I just so need. Like a hot pink bean bag chair, just had a tiny rip. The staff is usally pretty helpful. I browse twice a week. read more

Say you're walking around Davis square, and you think to yourself -- hey, I could really use a new old pair of slightly-worn going-out-of-fashion jeans. Then, maybe you should stop in to the Goodwill Store. But, if what you really secretly want to do is watch hipsters and legitimately poor people congregate in almost equal proportion to peruse used clothing and slightly-chipped housewares, then Davis Goodwill is the absolute perfect place to be. The only place that really even rivals it is Boston Common after-hours, and here you don't have to watch drunk 20-somethings taunt homeless people. Score! The best game to play is "spot the irony" -- a game of perceptive skill, where you decide whose hideous fashion choices were ironic gambits to show they buck social norms, and which are because of the economic downturn. Everybody loses when you realize that since you're not poor, you're definitely a hipster: disqualified from making fun of one group, and a dick for making fun of the other. When the entertainment value of the customers wears thin, though, Goodwill still has some things going for it. It's not the cheapest thrift shop I've been to, but because its prices are leveled by category, nicer things actually become pretty solid deals. $8 suit jacket, anyone? And the hipster/poor person dichotomy gives the inventory an interesting mix, especially in their not-to-be-scoffed-at book collection. There are the expected James Pattersons, but I've also found barely-worn chapbooks from contemporary poets. Housewares are also a shining point, full of "Mandy's 50th Birthday" commemorative mugs, and the like, but also factory seconds, at generally deeper discounts than the clothes. Come for the show, but stay for the merch. There are certainly better Goodwill or Salvation Army stores out there, but none quite so convenient. The ease of popping in on your way home from work outweighs the dollar-or-two price bump you'll be paying. read more

They have cleaned this place up and gotten much more organized, plus their Halloween costume selection is outstanding during October. Nice job, Goodwill. Davis Square is clearly a bargain shopper's paradise, with these guys playing a major role. The place is packed with shoppers of all kinds (sometime the lines get to be inordinately long) but the staff is really nice and very efficient. I have gotten three really nice jackets here that I always get compliments on but I check the labels and the condition carefully plus haul them into the dry cleaners before they cross my threshold. I've worn one of those stylish jackets to two weddings and got continuous compliments both times. They have a lot of household articles, LPs, electrical appliances and books down below street level, but you will also find the annoying book dealers here with their scanners who recklessly plunge through books to see how much they can get for them by scanning the ISBN number, dumping their rejects anywhere they please. They are mainly here on Saturday. Can someone just unplug these people and tell them to go away? This place is in a great location for people who enjoy popping into a thrift shop. It's always teeming with people of all sorts, including many very colorful characters. read more

I agree with a previous post that many things are too expensive here. Target and Christmas Tree used items for same price as new. And they have a lot of inventory that is too expensive for used low end clothing and goods. They should cut their prices in half and move more merchandise. I get the feeling a lot of stuff just doesn't sell. They would do everyone a favor with lower prices so they could recycle more things and help customers who don't have much to spend. After the redo of the store a couple of years ago it was nice for a while, but now it's getting grubby again. Really needs regular cleaning of the floors, etc. read more

This Goodwill is actually fairly clean relative to other Goodwills, although its still a mess. Not as many crazies here on a Thursday afternoon compared to the Central Square location and a much better range of decent garments after a quick search. After poking around in the men's section downstairs for 10 minutes I dug up 3 vintage blazers that fit like a glove, save for the arm length. My guess is they were all donated by the same stubby armed person. I had never heard of the makers (each was different), but when I brought them to my tailor for alterations, he was blown away that I got them for $7.99 each and said that if I had purchased them new back in the day, they ranged from $250-$500 each. notbad.jpg. To Goodwill Somerville: Im hooked on you....you're my boyfriend's only competition!!!!XOXOXOX You probalby already know...but just in case...they pick a color, say yellow tags each day and those items are 50% off... I often go more than once a week...I buy just about every time I am there...I am dedicated to second-hand shopping and should YELP! a list of it...but... I got fake uggs there for 7.49...and cool glasses for about 1$ each...oh my! yesterday, I got a shirt and 2 other glasses....love it!!!! i donate here too. I've found a lot of good items for a really cheap price here: JCrew sweaters ($4), new Parish Denim Jeans ($13, originally $159), a leotard (for a theme party). But it's not as organized and pleasant to be in than a lot of the trendy thrift stores. Hey, at the end of the day, no matter what the ambiance, you totally get what you don't pay for at thrifts stors. And if you've got the patience to sift, you can pretty much find anything. read more

Really, really great Goodwill! Tons of stuff, excellent clothes (generally), good prices. I will say that they are somewhat lacking on homegoods and furniture, as compared to the stores I'm used to in California, but I think its because no one here has a car to drive their old junk out to Goodwill! One note to the employees - PLEASE PLEASE do a better job of organizing the jeans and pants! You have a great selection, but probably 20-30% of the jeans in the womens section are actually mens, and they are shoved in there so tight that you can hardly sift through the clothing....time for a sale, eh??? ;) read more

Compared to the Central Square store this store here is a million times better. I couldn't believe at the center Square store they had ripped and torn clothes most of them were filthy and almost every jacket was $50 and above! I've never seen at the Davis Square store one item that wasn't in perfect condition. They also have great sales at the end of the season and they are very professional and treat that customers with a lot of courtesy. compared to the one in Central Square the employees at the Davis Square store obviously love their job while the ones at Central Square definitely need attitude adjustments. not to mention that none of the clothes are put in order an Central Square store by color and almost all of them are stuff that you would not sell to anyone or even give away to a homeless person they are rags! read more
