I thought I saw a new sign on this building, and then I saw a crowd the other day, so I stopped in as soon as I could. It's a little place in a small strip mall. Carryout, mainly, though there is a small counter where you could eat a quick lunch. Several kinds of fried fish, fried chicken, pork chops, etc. There was a meatloaf special the day I went. Choose your meat and get two sides- but you'll have trouble narrowing it down to two, so you might want to get some extras! It all smelled and looked great. I got the fried perch, with mac and cheese and greens; and smothered pork chops, with cabbage and sweet potato casserole. They also had mashed potatoes, broccoli casserole, and a few other sides. The perch was perfect: hot, tender and flaky, light breading. The pork chops were very good: meaty, fried up nicely, with a good gravy. The mac and cheese was very good home-made style (though it has to compete with Sweetie's mom's pinnacle of excellence, and it is close but not up there.) The greens were excellent- vinegary, tender, flavorful. The cabbage was perfect: not overcooked, and a few other veggies thrown in for color. The sweet potatoes were so good I had to slow myself down. Service was friendly and fast. Prices are very reasonable- we got all that for under $20, and it was plenty. We'll be back. Even though Sweetie is averse to "shacks" (I told her it's in a strip mall, not a shack; she was unimpressed.)

Bought the 3 piece fried perch with 2 sides and added sides and shared with my hubby on Juneteenth! LET ME TELL YOU it was a plate full of divine yum!!!!! YOU will not be disappointed!!! The fried perch was crispy and delicious, the cabbage had a flavorful kick, the green beans were perfectly spiced, the macaroni and cheese melted in my mouth so buttery tasty and the sweet yams were a sweet delicacy!! The service was welcoming and the food was fresh and piping hot. Do come and taste for yourself!!! Will return definitely!! Already recommended to friends!!!!

This is a small, unassuming place on the same side as the old dairy queen on Sunbury Rd that you'd probably miss if you weren't looking for it. There is a small table for sitting but it's basically carryout only as the inside is pretty small. First of all, the staff were very welcoming and friendly from the moment I walked in the door. Soul food is my JAM so I was super geeked to try this place and it did not disappoint. Fried fish, mac and cheese, and yams, amen. The yams were some of the best I've tasted, it almost tasted like there was some vanilla in them, the mac and cheese was cheesy and just right, and the fried fish was crunchy and seasoned to perfection. I also had a dessert and I'm honestly not sure what it was, it had a pudding cake texture and was the perfect end to my meal. Good Kitchen 614 goes on my list of soul food restaurants to recommend.

Service was great the whole time. There's a lot on the menu I wanted to try, but I saw smothered pork chops. I've liked them since I first had them, so whenever I see them on the menu, I usually get them. You can get them as a bowl, but I got the dinner. Two bone-in chops, tender and juicy and breaded with a little seasoning. Covered with a gravy/sauce that adds more flavor. And over top of tender short grain rice. I got baked beans as one of my sides, and they were soupy, but savory, and very tasty. I also got fried okra, which was a large portion of perfectly fried chunks. Also nicely seasoned. They do give you ketchup and vinegar, and hot sauce, and I tried those on the okra. But it was plenty good on its own. I came in hungry and left stuffed. They offered dessert, but I didn't even look at the menu because I knew I had no room. Parking is absolutely awful. Not their fault, of course. There are a couple of spots in the alley, but they are 30 minute only zones. Enough for pickup, but I didn't think it would be enough for dine in, and it wasn't, though my food did come up pretty quickly. Other parking is nearby but some of it is time limited or somewhat expensive. Limited street spots and a parking garage or two. You are right downtown, so you're going to pay. Definitely worth coming back to though. The price was reasonable, the food was excellent. The atmosphere was great. The music was great.

Tiny, carryout only, though there are a couple of tables to sit while you wait or maybe to eat a quick lunch. Super friendly staff. Fairly short menu; all the good stuff. I wasn't famished and didn't want to wait for chicken or fish, so I got an assortment of sides thinking that would be quicker. They fried up the okra right then, though, and had a steady stream of pickup orders coming through the door, so it still took 10-15 minutes. It was okay, though, smelling the amazing scents coming from the kitchen, talking to the staff and customers. I hadn't noticed they have ribs (just a picture, not on the menu) so I might've ordered those. Oh well. $20 I think, or they do combos with sides or fish and sides. Anyway. I got fried okra, and it was a big portion and absolutely amazing. No need for any sauces, tasty on its own. Perfectly crisp. Baked beans: my style, sauce so thick you can eat them with a fork. Slightly sweet, mostly savory, very good. Greens (collards) with turkey: outstanding. Tender but not floppy, nicely seasoned. Cornbread: soft, sweet, crumbly, topped with butter. Yum. Geechee rice: seasoned, bacon and sausage, very good. And black-eyed pea salad. I like black-eyed peas but had never had them in a salad. These were great: plump, with bits of tomato and cucumber and onion, in a vinegary dressing. Again, yum. Enough food for two meals. They gave me the side plate special, three sides and cornbread, which helped with the price. I was headed home and not thirsty so I didn't get a drink, but based on conversations with other customers I missed out on the lemonade and sweet tea. I'll be back for those and maybe a rib-fish combo. And to try the mac. Get here if you can!

I looked at the steam table, and not sure what to get because I tire of spending my money and being disappointed. I ordered something that I thought would be a safe-bet...I ordered 4 fried wings, Mac and cheese, and candied yams. I started tasting my food when I got in the car. The wings were perfectly cooked -- juicy and tender. The Mac and cheese had a decent amount of cheese, not like some places that cover their Mac and cheese with some type of Velveeta sauce. I would have eaten all of my wings in the car, but I needed some hot sauce, which surprisingly the restaurant did not have. I finished my meal when I got home. The yams were delicious...not overly sweet. I will say that the wings and Mac and cheese could have used a little more seasoning, but that was okay...there are many times where I went to a soul food restaurant and had to toss food because it was way too salty. I would rather my food to be under seasoned than over seasoned. You can always add, but you can't take it away. LOVED the food at Kay's, a food stall located inside the Saraga market on S. Hamilton Rd. Ms. Kay,…read morethe owner, is friendly and goes above and beyond to provide excellent service. I have to admit that ever since moving to Columbus 6 years ago, I've felt that great soul food is hard to come by here, but hers is definitely the exception! Came on a Sunday afternoon and tried the stuffed salmon combo. You are allowed to pick how many sides you want, and the price increases accordingly. I opted for mac n cheese and collard greens, and the greens were some of the best I've ever tried at a restaurant. Also was given a huge portion well worth the price. She was kind enough to let me sample her turkey and dressing which were delicious too. I'll definitely be back!

After a really rough day on the lanes, we were hongry (yes, I spelled that correctly) and wanted soul food. The soul food place we'd visited the last time we were in Columbus closes at 6pm. It's a little after 7. So trusting my fellow Yelpers, I searched out soul food and Kays was very near our hotel. They, the Yelpers, as usual, got it right. Those of you who know us, know that we go in hard. Especially when the place has good customer service reviews. Our fellow Yelpers did not lie. The place is a kitchen staff by Kay herself and a young lady whom I'm assuming is her daughter? Nonetheless, her booming personality and jovial demeanor made us not care about what was cooking in her kitchen! We wanted it. The hand written flipboard menu was nothing less than charming. Made me feel like I was at grandma's where she put a note on the refrigerator saying this is what's for dinner. Don't spoil your appetite before then. Not an expansive daily special menu, which was cool, because when you haven't eaten since breakfast, you tend to go hog wild at the mere thought of food, and typically can't settle on anything. Pimp had pork chops, rice and gravy, and greens. I had the catfish and macaroni and cheese. When I say the silence was palpable when Pimp started chomping that chop ... He completely left the building. Him, pork chops, rice and gravy were in a different ethosphere. He did wish there was more gravy though. Greens were tender and well seasoned. My catfish was rolled with hands that had done family reunion fish frys for a long time. Well seasoned, coated and fried to perfection. The macaroni and cheese had the creamy, stringiness that you like to play with before you fly it into your mouth. It definitely had personality. But the coup de grace was indeed the service. I am completely angry, because we need to eat in this woman's kitchen at least once a month, and Columbus is 3 1/2 hours away from Detroit! The Saraga International Market is interesting in and of itself, but I'll post a different review on that. Kudos Ms. Kay. We're looking forward to them oxtails on our way home tomorrow and to many visits in the future.

Turn in at the light, and be careful about which driveway you pick- I think it's the second driveway, near a daycare, and it winds around back to the restaurant. You can see the place from James. Pretty busy at lunchtime, a few dine in and some carryout. Served cafeteria style, so you can see what you want, and drool over it. Well, there's a clear shield, but you know what I mean. I got smothered pork chops, since I hadn't had them forever. Meaty, tender, covered in gravy and onions. So so good, especially as comfort food on a cold day. You can also get them fried. Plenty of other things on the menu looked good. And all of the sides sounded good. I ended up getting one that was a mix of cabbage and greens, instead of getting the two separately, so that gave me space for another side. I went with mac & cheese. Sweetie's mom's mac is the best in the world. I'm not kidding. This is not quite that good, but is a very good homemade version, loaded with cheese, and baked in a big pan. Service was excellent. Prices are a bit steep, but good for the quantity and quality. Canned pop. Cheap plasticware. I was leery, but the pork chops were so tender that even a plastic knife pulled them apart easily. Hardly needed it. The place is not fancy inside. Old, but clean, a few booths and tables. You're there for the food, not the decor. Or, come in and pick it up and take it home. And have better silverware... I will definitely be back. I loved what I got, and was enticed by some of the other things.
